Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety

In 2024, Children’s Home Society embraced transformation—of our campuses, our services, and, most importantly, the lives of the children and families we serve. That transformation continues today, fueled by something just as powerful: hope.

Hope is a science-backed strategy for resilience, healing, and change. It is the foundation of the work we do every day. For the first time in our agency’s history, all 380 of our employees have been trained in a single theory of care: the Science of Hope. We now carry with us the knowledge that hope is not an abstract concept—it is measurable, teachable and life-changing.

I am profoundly hopeful about Children’s Home Society. Our work is exceptional; our staff is second to none. Every day we work with children and families who need hope, safety and stability and we are absolutely blessed to witness their growth and success.

Hope is what drives each of us—staff, board members, volunteers and donors—to invest in the possibility of something better. You are part of this story. Your support, generosity and dedication make hope possible. Together, we are changing lives— and we are building a future in which hope leads the way.

HOPE IS HERE.

How can we best cope with change, conflict and uncertainty?

What helps us develop resilience?

Where do we get the strength and stamina to heal from trauma?

HOPE IS THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS AND MANY OTHERS.

In 2024, Children’s Home Society began a journey to understand and embrace the Science of Hope. Our entire community is included in this endeavor—leadership, staff, clients, board members, volunteers and professional partners.

The Science of Hope is a theory, a framework and a movement. More than 2,000 published research studies show that hope is one of the strongest predictors of well-being for children, adults and families.

Hope is the belief that your future will be better than today, and you have the power to make it so.

Hope defined

“Hope is the belief that your future will be better than today, and you have the power to make it so.”*

This is how hope is defined within the Science of Hope. It’s not just wishful thinking; it’s the future expectation that we can set and pursue desired goals.

Defined in this way, the basis of hope consists of three pillars.

1. Goals

2. Pathways, for pursuing goals and overcoming obstacles

3. Willpower, or agency – the ability to direct attention on pathways to desired goals

GOALS

The desired future outcome, the specific target one wants to achieve.

PATHWAYS

The different strategies and steps one can take to reach their goal, including the ability to identify alternative routes if obstacles arise. or strategies

WILLPOWER

The mental capacity and motivation to actively pursue the chosen pathways and overcome challenges to reach the goal. or agency

The Science of Hope is surprisingly simple. It’s an established protective factor, valuable for trauma survivors in particular. It complements our current models and modalities of care. And it can be benchmarked and measured.

What hope looks like

Hope-driven

solution at Loving School

Teacher Assistant and Hope Navigator Paige Knuth noticed in the Science of Hope training materials that lower glucose levels were linked to lower hope levels.

Paige came up with the idea of providing children at Loving School with a healthy, midmorning snack to boost glucose levels and hope. While children in residential care have breakfast, some of those in day school are food insecure and hungry.

Part of Paige’s plan is ensuring the midmorning snack period is a time when teachers engage with students to build their relationships and work on raising hope. Appropriately, she’s nicknamed the concept “Willpower Snacks.”

Hope at CHS

THE GOAL

The Science of Hope closely aligns with CHS’s mission to prevent, treat and heal trauma. Executive leadership decided to bring the Science of Hope to CHS.

THE PATHWAY

CHS staff received training on the Science of Hope from Chan Hellman, PhD, Professor and Founding Director of the Hope Research Center and Angela Pharris, PhD, Associate Professor, Director of the Child Welfare Impact Institute and Senior Researcher at the Hope Research Center, both at the University of Oklahoma.

Hope Ambassadors, designated to lead the charge at CHS, are:

• Director of Schools Mike Groher

• Shelter Assistant Program Director Darlene Hillmer

• Clinical Director Malia Holbeck

• IT Director Austin Winter

Giving clients hope ASAP

Seeking emergency shelter can be one of the most challenging moments in one’s life.

What if hope could be introduced to Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety clients—both adults and children—as soon as they arrive, and throughout their stay?

Assistant Program Supervisors and Hope Navigators, Gwen Betz and Emily Hall, have integrated the Science of Hope into the client’s Shelter experience.

Clients are exposed to concepts of hope, including goals, pathways and willpower, when they need it most. The Scale of Hope questions are asked at intake and repeated at departure, allowing staff to measure increases in Hope.

THE WILLPOWER

Hope Ambassadors, Hope Navigators and staff are motivated and have begun implementing projects.

These include:

• Creating a short monthly hope newsletter for staff

• Including hope language in brochures, HR policies, Code of Ethics and COA documents

• Using Scale of Hope metrics to examine the impact of particular programs

• Incorporating hope concepts into individual and group therapy

• Developing a Science of Hope philanthropy worksheet for the Foundation

• Implementing hope-focused one-pagers on CHS services

• Including information on hope in Children’s Home Society University (CHSU) and new employee orientation

An additional 15 staff members serve as Hope Navigators, implementing hope-focused projects at a grassroots level within CHS.

Hope-Centered Leadership

• Leadership seeks to infuse values, policies, practices and programs with the Science of Hope to create a culture of well-being.

• Hope provides a unifying language across multidisciplinary teams to promote a positive culture where well-being is the outcome.

Collective Hope

• Collective Hope is the belief that the organization can hold a shared vision of the future.

• Employees believe the team can identify and navigate pathways to achieve the vision and there is collective willpower (energy) to engage in those pathways.

Organizational Outcomes

Research shows that collective hope is associated with lower burnout, lower turnover, increased commitment, job satisfaction, engagement and well-being.

Dear Friends,

The world feels unsettled right now. At Children’s Home Society (CHS), we see firsthand how chaos and uncertainty impact people of all ages. It affects not only those we serve but also our staff, volunteers, board members, partners and other stakeholders. Anxiety is high, tensions are rising, and uncertainty swirls around us like tumbleweeds in the wind.

Yet, in the midst of this turbulence, CHS stands as a refuge— a place of stability, healing, and hope. Every day, we witness remarkable transformations. You’ll read about some of them in this Annual Report. A once nonverbal child now finds his voice. A mother, having escaped domestic violence, is building a new future for herself and her children. Through the patience, dedication, and compassion of our staff, lives are being rebuilt, and hope is taking root.

What’s the key to fostering hope? At CHS, we create a safe, nurturing environment where healing begins. We lead with kindness. We offer encouragement. We teach trust. We empower individuals to envision and create a better future. And most importantly, we equip them with the tools to carry that hope with them wherever life takes them. Because hope isn’t something we give—it’s something we help others discover within themselves.

I am deeply honored to be part of the CHS community, and I invite you to join us. Whether as a donor, volunteer, staff member, or someone seeking help, you are welcome here.

As the winds of uncertainty continue to blow, CHS remains steadfast— because our community needs hope now more than ever.

Dear Friends,

Hope is an essential component of a strong community. If you have children, or have even spent time around kids, you know that hope, enthusiasm and a sense of wonder seem to be part of their DNA.

Unfortunately, many children who have suffered trauma have lost hope. In these kids, enthusiasm can be dampened by repeated disappointments and that innate sense of wonder may be extinguished by fear. It’s heartbreaking to witness. But brain science tells us that trauma can be treated, and hope can be learned.

At Children’s Home Society (CHS), we are helping restore hope for the children, adults and families we serve. In this context, we define hope as a belief that the future can be better than today.

Since children are literally our future, nurturing hope is urgent and valuable work.

I joined the Children’s Home Foundation Board of Directors because, as a die-hard believer in stewardship, I know a strong nonprofit sector is one of the keys to the success and stability of our communities. Please join me in learning more about CHS and how we serve the people of South Dakota. We offer many opportunities for volunteers, friends and supporters.

CHS EVENTS IN 2025

HOPE IN THE HILLS: RAPID CITY CAMPUS TAKES SHAPE

Hope consists of a goal, a pathway leading to the goal, and the willpower to achieve the goal.

Our goal for the new Children’s Home Society (CHS) Rapid City Campus is to better serve children and families.

The pathway is the renovation of the former National American University building on Mount Rushmore Road and relocation of all our Black Hills services at this location. The willpower is our steadfast determination to make this transformation successful through planning, partnerships and fundraising.

Construction has begun on the new Rapid City Campus, transforming the 100,000-square-foot National American University (NAU) building into CHS’s new West River home.

“We have made a commitment—a promise— to care for children and families impacted by trauma,” said CHS President and CEO Michelle Lavallee.

“But change happens quickly and we must prepare for, and help create, the future of child welfare and family stability. By

increasing efficiencies and offering a true continuum of care at a single, convenient location, we are ready for whatever’s next,” she added.

All Black Hills programs and services will be located at the new campus, resulting in tremendous synergies and economies of scale. CHS will be more accessible for families, staff, visiting care providers, partners and multi-disciplinary team members.

In addition, the space is large and versatile enough to accommodate the inevitable changes that Michelle references.

“We’re now very well positioned in Rapid City to provide the services needed in the community today and tomorrow,” said Michelle.

> CONTINUES ON PAGES 10-11

Envisioning the new campus

When the campus is complete, children, families, professionals and partners will immediately feel welcome at the campus. Its natural setting, with green spaces, trees and vistas of the Black Hills, creates a calm and peaceful feeling.

In addition to the 12-acre NAU site, CHS purchased 17 adjacent acres to allow for future expansion and to preserve the inspirational, healing environment at the previous Rockerville location.

Sustainable and natural materials such as wood, stone and glass will transform the current facility into a warm and welcoming space of care, healing and renewal.

Hallmarks will include: IDENTITY

Renovating the facility will include expressing its identity, purpose and brand to the public.

WAYFINDING

Clear entry points and signage, along with intuitive layouts, will create a calm and welcoming experience for visitors.

FLEXIBILITY

Rooms, lighting, and furniture will be flexible, to allow for customizing spaces when needed. <

As design work progresses, features will be finalized; these are preliminary plans:

OUTDOORS:

• State-of-the-art security systems

• Walking paths

• Playgrounds

• Gardens

• Benches and terraces

• Meditation spaces

• Outdoor recreation facilities

• Ample parking and lighting

INDOORS:

• 32 beds for residential treatment

• 64 spots at Owen School reserved for day students from Rapid City and other area communities

• Library, art room and music rooms in the school

In the meantime

Many CHS services have relocated to the new building, including Outpatient Mental Health Services, Children’s Home Child Advocacy Center, Prevention, Training and Education, and Therapeutic Foster Care and Adoption Services. Foundation offices are also in the Mount Rushmore Road facility.

“Already we’re hearing from clients and staff how much they like our new location,” said Rapid City-based VP of Development Kara Flynn.

For several months before construction began, Kara gave tours of the new facility. “When walking through the building, even though it will be renovated, everyone could see the potential that the space offers,” she said.

“It’s inspiring to think about the possibilities,” said Kara. “And it does offer hope that we can help more children and families heal and achieve stability in a multitude of ways.”

Fundraising has begun on a limited basis. Construction is scheduled for completion in late 2026.

• Gym and recreational facilities

• Sensory rooms

• Conference and meeting rooms

• Full commercial kitchen and dining hall

• Artwork throughout the buildings

If you are interested in joining us on the pathway to achieve our goal, please contact Kara Flynn at 605.393.4277 or kara.flynn@chssd.org.

SOMETIMES HOPE IS “WHATEVER IT TAKES”

Director of Schools Mike Groher shared the story of Paxon, an Owen School student and Black Hills Children’s Home resident.

“He came to us in April of 2024,” he said. “He was five years old—and aggressive, nonverbal and not toilet trained. We weren’t sure if we would make a significant impact with Paxon at first.”

“But the school staff is committed to setting goals for each child and creating pathways to achieve them,” Mike added. “Our motto, ‘Whatever it takes,’ reflects this determination.”

Teacher Heather Hoeye reported on Paxon’s progress. “Within six months, he has made strides with basic language such as yes, no, please and thank you. He can count to seven and is starting to use names and pronouns without prompting.”

Paxon is using a special communication system where he links a picture to a need, such as a drink of water or a trip to the restroom. “That’s huge cognitive growth,” she said.

Heather added that Paxon is now beginning to form recognizable letters in sequence and associate them with certain sounds. “Today, he matched five pictures starting with ‘K’ to the letter K. A few weeks ago, he didn’t even recognize the letter.”

HOPE is here

Teacher Assistant Becky Jackson in the restroom with Paxon. Mike said, “Yes, she has her personal cell phone, which is something we try to avoid. But what she is doing is playing an audio book for Paxon while he uses the bathroom on his first dry day of school. It was kind of a monumental day, and we celebrated Becky and her ability to meet his needs—by doing whatever it takes.”

Rapid City School Update

Early in 2025, Children’s Home Society (CHS) began a collaboration with the Rapid City Area Schools to provide instruction in classrooms at the school district’s Lincoln Building in Rapid City.

“We have an agreement to provide two classrooms, each with up to 12 children,” said Mike. “One classroom will serve kindergarten and first-grade students, while the other will accommodate second and third graders.”

The school district provides the building, furnishings and students, while CHS provides teachers, curricula, technology and programming, including individual and family therapy.

“There’s a significant need to help kids in Rapid City,” Mike said. “By fostering a sense of hope and purpose, we can empower children to set and achieve meaningful academic and personal goals.”

CHS will screen children recommended for the program to ensure they are a good fit and that their families are committed to participating.

CONTINUUM OF CARE GIVES HOPE TO RAPID CITY FAMILY

This is the story of a family reckoning with a horrific truth, which shook their very foundation. It’s also the story of their healing journey, and how Children’s Home Society (CHS) has walked alongside each family member to help them move forward.

The oldest child in the family is Logan, 14. After a unit on sex in his school health class, he made a disclosure to his mother, Natalie. When Logan was seven, his stepfather had sexually abused him.

Natalie was devastated. But it got worse. The two younger children—12-year-old Zach and 10-year-old Brady, revealed they were abused, too, when they were five and four. Natalie called the police, who referred the family to Children’s Home Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in Rapid City.

CAC is a safe, child-focused environment, where children can tell their story once to a trained interviewer in a trauma-informed manner. Then, a multi-disciplinary team that includes medical providers, law enforcement, mental health, prosecution, child protection, victim advocacy and other professionals decides how to help the child. CAC offers referrals to therapy, medical exams, courtroom preparation, victim advocacy, case management and more.

Jessica Broullire, Melanie Coleman and Monica Eaton-Harris of CHS all worked with the family.

Let the healing begin

“We run every referral through our system to see if we have any history with the family,” said Education and Public Awareness Specialist/Community Navigator Jessica Broullire. “We found that we had history with the offender in a different jurisdiction, which we let the investigator know.”

According to Forensic Interviewer Monica Eaton-Harris, “When the subject was being investigated for the first incident, he moved on to the family that we are now discussing.” Therapist Melanie Coleman explained that when the offender was jailed for the first offense, Natalie put in place a No Contact Order. Unfortunately, the abuse of her children had already taken place.

At CAC, Monica gave the family a tour to help them feel more comfortable in the new environment. She interviewed Logan first. Zach wasn’t ready to be interviewed, so Brady went next. A month later, when Zach was ready, Natalie brought him back to CAC. “His disclosure increased the charges against the offender,” said Jessica.

Next, she referred the children for counseling with Melanie at the CHS Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, in the same building as CAC.

“Each of the children processed their feelings differently,” explained Melanie. “Logan carried a lot of anxiety. Zach held a lot of anger. The youngest, Brady, has had a lot of regression back to the age when the trauma occurred. In Brady, regression looked like baby talk and temper tantrums, which is part of the healing process.”

The children received subpoenas to testify at the grand jury indictment. While Logan and Brady were confident, Zach was anxious. He had several crisis sessions with Melanie to work through those emotions and develop coping skills.

“We used Senate Bill 70 which was enacted in 2023 [written and advocated for by former CHS staff member Tifanie Petro], which allows reasonable accommodations for any child under the age of 16 testifying,” said Melanie. “Zach testified in a separate room with Mom outside the door and was allowed to have a comfort item.”

More mental health resources

Despite counseling, Zach remained angry. “He’s just angry all the time about the abuse,” said Melanie. “I don’t blame him. He’s angry about the loss of the relationship with his father and what he did to him. He’s angry at the world.”

Zach attempted to run away several times and when Natalie tried to stop him, he fought physically—scratching, hitting and kicking. She had to call the police to de-escalate the situation on several occasions. “In school he would throw things at other kids and was just unable to regulate his anger, which does stem from that sexual abuse,” Melanie explained. “Natalie and I attended an IEP meeting with school staff, and they said they were not able to meet his needs.”

As a result, Zach was referred to residential care. Melanie and Natalie met with Residential Program Director Freddy Maseman to tour Black Hills Children’s Home. Natalie decided it was the right fit for Zach, and as we go to press he is beginning Residential Treatment.

Hope is here

“Hope is found by celebrating small wins, like just showing up for therapy each week,” said Melanie. She has used the Children’s Hope Scale provided through the Science of Hope training with all three of the kiddos in therapy.

“We’ve seen the measurable hope increasing slowly over time,” she said. “For instance, I have been measuring it about every 30 days with Logan. We’ve seen it improve by about a point or so each month and then he made a pretty big jump of about four points. He started off with no hope and we’re up to moderate hope, and that is significant. Right now, we’re working towards high hope.”

“I want every family to know that resources like this exist. You’re not just on your own because CHS can support you,” said Natalie.

PREVENTION BEHIND BARS

Why CHS?

The Pennington County Jail isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find hope.

But thanks to Education and Public Awareness Specialist Jessica Broullire of Children’s Home Society (CHS) and the Sheriff’s IGNITE program for incarcerated individuals, hope is taking root and beginning to grow.

IGNITE stands for Individual Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education. According to IGNITE Coordinator Jessica Afrank, the program includes education, post-incarceration work opportunities, job certificates, financial awareness instruction, substance use groups and more.

Jessica A. was familiar with CHS and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) trainings. “I knew the topic of ACEs would be important for the currently incarcerated when I started in my new position. I reached out to Jessica with CHS and she kindly agreed to get involved.”

The mission of CHS is to prevent, treat and heal trauma. And our Prevention, Training and Education staff works statewide with groups of youth, parents and professionals. Educating incarcerated individuals helps treat and heal trauma in participants and helps prevent trauma in the next generation.

A new teaching environment

Jessica B. teaches twice a month, every other month. “There’s no PowerPoint,” she said. “I have to send in handout materials ahead of time and have them approved.”

“And it’s just me and the participants in that room. The correctional officers are down the hallway,” Jessica B. continued. “It was nerve-wracking at first.” But she soon found that participants were eager to learn and ready to make changes in their lives.

She covers ACEs, along with the neurobiology that helps explain why childhood trauma impacts people mentally, physically, socially and financially throughout their lives.

Other topics include how to nurture resilience, the importance of experiencing social/emotional support and hope, receiving help from others and connecting with the community.

Classes make a difference

“Many participants have never heard of ACEs,” said Jessica A. “They have said they were unaware of how much impact adverse childhood experiences currently have on their lives.”

Jessica B. said that she sees participants make connections between the lessons and their own lives.

“They will talk about, ‘Wow, that’s probably why I made that choice—because my fight or flight response kicked in. That thoughtful part of my brain was offline.’”

“I’ve also seen recognition of intergenerational trauma. They’ve made comments like, ‘I realize that I have to break this cycle.’ And then we talk about, ‘OK, so how are you going to do that?’”

Jessica A. sees how the sessions benefit participants. “Learning about ACEs helps inmates identify toxic risks and reactions that can follow,” she said. “Being aware of factors that increase ACEs scores may encourage

individuals to recover from trauma while also helping them understand how their own decisions can have long-term impacts on their children. There are approaches that can be done to reduce ACEs such as strengthening their own families, finding help and providing support.”

“We talk about building those healthy neural networks and how children look to us to understand the world and making those connections starts at birth,” Jessica B. said. Most of the inmates will return to the community, so providing them with positive parenting skills is a good strategy for helping reduce ACEs in children.

For Jessica B., teaching incarcerated individuals is a fulfilling experience. “They are so grateful and say, ‘Thank you for taking the time for us to have this conversation.’ And I’ve told them, ‘You guys provide the most raw and vulnerable conversations for me. I do this training across the state and the conversations we have in here are the ones that sit with me the most. And I look forward to it every time.’”

“We greatly appreciate Jessica’s commitment and willingness to provide services to justice-impacted individuals currently housed at the Pennington County Jail,” Jessica A. said. “The participants and I are grateful for community members who are willing to provide programming and assist with personal growth to encourage positive re-entry. “

“ACEs are what happened to us. They do not need to define what happens next. You can have hope. You can feel better. And we can all take steps to prevent ACEs from being passed down to the next generation.”

HOPE FOR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

Children’s Home Society (CHS) Family Engagement Specialist Marty Krause spends a lot of time at the police station.

No, he’s not in trouble. Marty is embedded with the Rapid City Police Department (RCPD), providing case management services to people identified by police officers.

“Having Marty here gives us a layer of expertise that we don’t have on our team,” said Jamie Kirsch, RCPD Community Violence Interruption Program Manager. “Marty brings with him both the knowledge of casework and access to the tools and resources of Children’s Home Society.”

The goal of Jamie’s team is to reduce violence through prevention and intervention, which supports the police department’s goal of creating a safer community.

And it’s working. Jamie pointed out that in one neighborhood, which saw the city’s highest concentration of violent crime five years ago, their team has been able to reduce violent crime rates by more than 50% through intervention.

Why the police?

Because of the work they do, officers see first-hand which families need support. Using referrals from these officers, together with call-for-service and crime statistics, and other data, they can pinpoint specific individuals, families and neighborhoods that can benefit from outreach.

What does support look like? “It really depends on the family,” Marty said. “It can be as simple as getting to know them and providing links to different resources in the

community, so they can get the services they need. In other cases, it can be very intensive, for example, helping a family fill out a residential care application for substance abuse treatment or psychiatric care and actually transporting the person to a facility.”

“Residential placement is always the last option,” he clarified. “We always want to keep families together, if at all possible.”

Teamwork opens doors, changes lives

When the police show up at someone’s home, people generally open the door— whereas if a case worker shows up, people may not even answer. They simply don’t have the authority that the police do.

Yet, people may not trust the police. “That’s where Marty comes in, as someone who isn’t an officer and can lend a helping hand,” Jamie said. Together, Marty and the police make a great team.

“The innovative component to this partnership is really that we’ve got law enforcement officers who are actively on patrol responding to calls for service, identifying families,” said Jamie. “It can be frustrating for officers because they don’t always have the tools to connect families to support, especially when they see the families struggling.”

Marty regularly goes to the Juvenile Services Center to work with incarcerated youth to help them transition back to the community. He also visits an inpatient treatment facility for youth to give presentations to patients.

“We’re working with individuals and families one-on-one to stabilize them, to connect them to the right supports, to prevent an escalation into the criminal justice system, and to stop that cycle of violence from one generation to the next,” Jamie said.

Innovative program benefits community

Rapid City is one of a select handful of communities with law enforcement that can provide this type of support.

“As far as I know, we are among a very small group of law enforcement agencies nationwide using these types of strategies with dedicated teams providing co-response support,” Jamie says.

According to Jamie, the results of the program prove that the approach works. “We can see it tangibly in the numbers. For us, it means that entire neighborhoods are seeing a reduction in the amount of violence they’re exposed to on a daily basis,” she said.

“To go from what was once 60 violence-related calls for service in 2022 to just 30 violent calls for service in 2024 is a significant drop.”

Marty agreed. “We’re trying to make the community a better place for everybody to live in, and have healthier relationships, healthier families, healthier children, grandparents, the whole family unit, and a healthier community.”

ANSWERING A CALL FOR HELP

Marty is working with a family in which three children live with a grandparent. The oldest child, age 11, was drinking a fifth of vodka every night and smoking marijuana. “She had basically not attended any school in two years,” Marty said.

“We were able to go in and work with that family,” he explained, “We helped get that child into substance abuse treatment to make sure she is safe.”

“Now, we are working with the two other children, who have some difficult behavioral health challenges as well,” Marty added. “Due to the partnership between the RCPD and CHS, we can utilize the staff from both of those entities to make all that happen.”

Marty Krause of CHS and Jamie Kirsch work together within the Rapid City Police Department.

HELP. HOPE. HEALING.

At any given time, Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety clients include a handful of immigrants who are victims of domestic violence.

One of these was Nadia, who came to the U.S. from an Eastern European country with her husband 10 years ago. Now a U.S. citizen with three children, Nadia worked part-time at a big-box store; she and her husband worked separate shifts to save on childcare.

The cycle of abuse is insidious. After Nadia’s husband assaulted her, he served time in jail. When he was released, things improved—which is part of the cycle—only to escalate again later. He became angry and moody.

“One day he came home and said he no longer wanted her and the children and forced her to leave. She was afraid that if she tried to stay, he would become violent again, so she came to Shelter,” said Case Manager Shay Graves.

“I don’t have many friends here or any family,” said Nadia. “I am by myself here in America. It was a hard time for me.”

According to Nadia, Shay helped her with everything. “My life was broken. I had to start at zero to find day care, to find an apartment, to get help with documents, to change my work schedule and all the time with translators,” she said. “At Shelter, I didn’t have to pay rent or pay for food, so I was able to save money.”

After more than a month, Nadia moved into her own apartment with her children. She is grateful for Shelter and to Shay and other staff for their assistance. “I am better,” Nadia said. “They gave me help and they gave me hope.”

Nadia

A name of Slavic origin, Nadia means hope.

Residential Treatment and Schools Prevention Training and Education

Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety

Outpatient Mental Health

Black Hills Children’s Home (BHCH) and Sioux Falls Children’s Home (SFCH) are psychiatric residential treatment facilities and special education schools for children ages 4-14. We partner with parents and caregivers to serve children with social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Some may have experienced domestic violence, physical or sexual abuse, neglect, or have mental health needs that cannot be met in a home or school setting.

Budget: $19,624,056

Charitable Support: (7%) $1,381,356

Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety provides free services for adults and children who are victims of domestic violence, stalking, elder abuse, sexual assault and child abuse or neglect.

Budget: $5,507,508

United Way: (8.1%) $456,888

Other Charitable Support: (52.3%) $3,666,852

CHS provides hope-centered and trauma-informed mental health services for children and families in Rapid City. Our team of physicians, therapists, case managers and community health workers provides exceptional services as part of our continuum of care.

Family Engagement Services offers intensive case management, interventions and support to youth and families at imminent risk of system involvement.

Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) works to find adoptive families for children of all ages who are considered hard to place. Therapeutic Foster Care focuses on therapy, family support, case management and referrals.

Child Advocacy Center

The goal of CHS Prevention, Training and Education is to prevent child abuse in South Dakota. Statewide education, trainings and events focus on teaching the public and professionals how to recognize and respond to child abuse, properly handle child abuse disclosures, understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and implement trauma-informed care.

Budget: $210,968

Charitable Support: (71.9%) $151,686

The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) serves children who are alleged victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse or who have witnessed violence. CAC provides forensic interviews, support to families and coordinates specialized medical examinations. These services eliminate the need for repeated interviews and examinations by multiple investigating parties. Referrals come primarily through law enforcement and Child Protection Services.

Budget:

Budget: $546,928

Charitable Support: (47.5%) $259,882

$2,205,288

Charitable Support: (52.3%) $1,152,883

Bright Start

Bright Start, a nurse home visitation program, provides care for families with socio-economic risk factors during pregnancy and up until the child turns two. Nursing services include prenatal, maternal and infant/child health and development assessments and education; and parenting, health, safety and nutrition education.

Budget: $1,192,824

United Way: (21.6%) 258,000

United Way for Bright Start & Shelter for Family Safety

We serve ages 4–14 in residential treatment. We are the only provider in South Dakota caring for children ages 4-9 accredited by Council on Accreditation (COA).

We are the state’s largest children’s psychiatric residential treatment facility—38% of all beds in SD.

Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety is the largest domestic violence shelter in South Dakota, providing more than 3,000 individuals with services each year. We have a low staff-to-child ratio to ensure high quality care.

Children’s Home Foundation (CHF) was established in 1982 with a mission to ensure that CHS programs and services are fully funded. To that end, CHF raises financial and gift-in-kind resources for operating support and facility needs, and works to establish long-term sustainability through endowment funds and estate gifts.

Other Gifts

Since the early 1900s, caring friends have helped CHS during challenging economic times by providing bequests from their estates. Today, donors use a wide variety of gift vehicles, including:

• Bequests through wills and trusts

• Lead Trusts and Charitable Remainder Estates

• Making CHS the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan

Legacy gifts are used on an unrestricted basis to support CHS programs unless otherwise restricted by the donor. These restricted designations can be made to support a specific program or area of service at CHS as long as the specific designation is outlined by the donor.

WHERE HOPE SHINES BRIGHTLY

What’s the ultimate symbol of hope?

A newborn baby...

and do we ever have newborn babies in our Bright Start Nurse-Family Partnership service!

In January 2025, Bright Start had 16 babies born to families enrolled in the program! This ties our record set in January 2014 and far exceeds our average, which in 2024 was seven and in 2023 was six! We have a total of more than 168 clients working with seven nurses.

The support, compassion, and commitment the Bright Start nurses pour into the families make such a difference in the trajectory of these tiny little lives—and creates hope for the future of our communities.

The following list shows a few examples of how restricted gifts were used at CHS:

Electronic

smart boards for classrooms

New Beginnings baskets for families at Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety

Recreational outings and trips

Birthday and Christmas gifts

A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY

FOR THOSE 70½ YEARS OLD AND OLDER

You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $108,000 per person) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Children’s Home Society (CHS) without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value up to $108,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference at CHS. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD for short.

Why Consider This Gift?

• Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the impact of your giving immediately.

• You may be able to use your gift to satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), if applicable.

• You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

• Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

MEMORIAL GIFTS

Gifts Given January 1–December 31, 2O24

Memorial gifts are given in memory of family members or friends who have passed away. Memorial gift card packets are available by request.

Due to space limits, only gifts of $20+ are listed. Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety gifts are noted in bold type.

18TH ANNUAL JON CRANE CHS BENEFIT AUCTION

Arrowhead Country Club, Rapid City

Event Date:

Saturday, September 21, 2024

Event founders, Jon and Gail Crane, Denny McKay, and Richard and Rose DuBois, had a vision to showcase the region’s top artists, raise funds for Children’s Home Society and create opportunities for live-auction artists to mentor, encourage and teach art to children at Black Hills Children’s Home.

DESIGNATION: Children’s Home Society Rapid City Campus

Thanks for the memories— and all your generous support.

Thanks to Greg Blomberg and the Media One Advertising/Marketing team, Great Bear Ski Valley, partners, sponsors and participants, Funski raised more than $1 million in 35 years as a benefit for Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety!

Starting as a cross-country ski race and growing to a multi-event weekend, Media One Funski has supported CHS for many amazing years, but the time has come to forge ahead with new opportunities. Although Media One Funski as we know it will not be held in 2025, we hope you will continue supporting Shelter for Family Safety.

FOLD FORWARD!

In our 2024 Annual Report, we kicked off our Join the Fold campaign, which you can see at chssd.org/JointheFold. The origami swan is our symbol of transformation, hope and healing. At Children’s Home Society, art holds a special place in our hearts.

“Art is a voice for everyone, but especially victims of trauma who feel like their voices have been silenced,” said Black Hills Children’s Home Art Teacher Gillian Spiva.

Here’s an update on the progress of this community art project:

• Thousands of children and adults statewide have participated in folding paper swans and cranes. We provide the origami paper; folders can write notes to the people we serve before folding.

• As planned, nearly 3,000 origami birds were hung in the new Daugaard Dining Hall in September 2024. Group folds are continuing and new installations at all campuses are in the works!

• The Join the Fold campaign won an ADDY award from the American Advertising Federation – South Dakota.

At the Daugaard Dining Hall ribbon cutting, the first Join the Fold installation was unveiled.

HOPE is here

Mark Mordhorst is a Black-Hills-based artist and supporter of CHS. After learning about Join the Fold, he created and gifted to CHS a stunning, stained-glass origami bird!

• Senior Buyer/Category Manager at POET Kara Jones of Sioux Falls saw a notice about Join the Fold on a community website. As a child, Kara was an origami whiz kid, making not just birds, but entire menageries. Excited to start folding, she shared the information with co-workers, who wanted to participate as well. Next, Kara invited POET’s Communications Director, who in turn invited all Sioux Falls staff! “It just exploded over the span of 72 hours,” Kara said. In April and May, Kara will lead folds on Zoom for all company locations. In the meantime, Kara is using a 3-D printer to make origami birds.

HOPE ARRIVES IN A HELICOPTER

Hope begins with a belief.

And that means to have hope, you must first hold onto a belief that something positive can happen.

More than 20 years ago on a calm December morning, Sioux Falls Children’s Home staff were asked to gather outside with the kids. They were not told why. Before long, everyone heard the familiar whirring sound of blades as a helicopter appeared overhead and began its descent to the ball diamond!

The children, already excited about the helicopter’s unannounced arrival, watched in anticipation as it landed. Even more unexpected was the appearance of Santa Claus jumping from the seat with a bulging red bag full of gifts.

An eight-year-old girl spoke her one profound belief: “I knew he would find me!”

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.
