The Road to Resilience As we look back at 2022, we reflect on how much was accomplished! A new Strategic Planning process re-affirmed our goals: Employer of Choice, Provider of Choice and Financial Sustainability and updated strategies and tactics were created, including re-organization of our leadership structure, re-alignment of programs and selection of new systems for financial management and electronic health records for implementation in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Both systems will increase efficiency and enable more comprehensive analytics and data collection. To address workforce shortages and turnover while enhancing clinical care, we embarked on the process of addressing salary structure and invested in internal supervision and training to ensure a mission-driven, trauma-informed culture committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. Our leadership team was immersed in a series of workshops provided by Yardstick Management focused on recognizing and addressing bias, microaggressions, and building a culture of trust with all staff engaged in versions of these trainings. As we faced the continuing mental health crisis in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in social unrest, the increase in community violence, and the fact that one in five of Georgia children lost a caregiver during COVID-19, as well as changes in Georgia’s foster care and mental health systems, the need for CHRIS 180’s trauma informed counseling, substance use, Wraparound services and community violence prevention services came starkly to the forefront. CHRIS 180 continued the transition of residential foster care services from group homes to our rapidly growing therapeutic foster care program. We also won two awards to begin a violence reduction program for teens in schools and community and a City of Atlanta contract to expand Cure Violence Atlanta from Zone 3 into Zone 4. Working together, CHRIS 180’s Board of Directors and organizational leadership evaluated the opportunity to apply for a Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC). CHRIS 180 was the only private provider in Georgia to win this award. The CCBHC designation will provide CHRIS 180 with additional tools to better address the impact of the social determinants of health that have become so much more visible in recent years and will provide a more sustainable payment source. In addition, through a competitive bidding process at the end of our five year contract, the Fulton County Department of Behavioral Health awarded CHRIS 180 a 10-year renewable contract to provide behavioral health services to more children and young adults as a part of the Fulton County Behavioral Health Network, In addition, we began the process of consolidating our Wraparound services, increasing school-based mental health and expanding substance use services to include medication-assisted treatment. Thank you for your support of our critical work. Together, we can achieve our mission of healing children, strengthening families and building community.

THE ROAD TO HEALING: SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH CHRIS 180’s School-Based Mental Health program steps in to help youth dealing with challenges by providing therapy and support to students and teachers at more than 75 schools throughout Metro Atlanta—including Cynthia, a 13-year-old struggling with depression and post-traumatic stress. When Cynthia first connected with a CHRIS 180 therapist, she felt hopeless and had no plans for her future. After six months of counseling, her grades have improved and she is active, involved in sports and sleeps well at night. “I don’t feel sad like I used to before,” Cynthia shared. “I have more energy and feel really happy now.” Now, when asked about her hopes for the future, Cynthia shares that she plans to go to college and get a nursing degree so that she can help others. Cynthia is just one of the 1,857 students we were able to serve this year through our relationships with Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County, DeKalb County and Clayton County Public Schools.
THE ROAD TO REUNIFICATION: FOSTER CARE CHRIS 180’s Foster Care and Adoptions Program helps children in foster care find forever families and works to bring siblings who have been separated in foster care together. Children are helped in small, six-bed group homes and in foster homes where individual children can find a home and siblings in foster care can be united. Adoption is the goal for some children and re-unification is the goal for others. Dee is just one example. Before coming to CHRIS 180, Dee had been separated from his sibling for years. He struggled with significant behavioral challenges and had few coping skills. But over time, and with the help of our CHRIS 180 WRAParound team, Dee and his sibling were placed together, and his foster parents were able to help him feel safe and secure in the home and with his brother. Dee began to excel in the classroom and was even named Student of the Month at his school. At the end of the year, Dee and his brother were reunited with their mother. Despite the trauma they have faced, they are both thriving and doing well, which is our wish for each child in our care.

Katy was removed from her home and placed with her grandma due to her mom’s substance use disorder. Her mom, Susan, came to CHRIS 180 when she needed treatment, stability and hope—and a path to be reunited with Katy. Susan was immediately connected to our Substance Use program, where she was able to work on her recovery as well as her mental, emotional and physical health. Through CHRIS 180’s whole-family approach, Katy and Susan’s therapists and case workers formed a Care Team. They ensured the whole family, including Katy’s grandma, had the resources they needed to be successful and to work toward reuniting Katy with her mother. Katy’s grandma had access to support groups for caregivers of a child affected by substance use, and Katy participated in our School-Based Mental Health services. Through trauma-informed therapy and a stable and loving community, CHRIS 180 gives children like Katy the ability to grow into healthy adults. Within three years, Susan moved from struggling with addiction to gaining independence and successfully reuniting with her daughter. Susan shared, “Having her back has given me life again and a purpose to live.”
THE ROAD TO PEACE: CURE VIOLENCE, TEEN VIOLENCE REDUCTION & SCHOOL VIOLENCE PREVENTION Youth violence is a public health crisis. In 2022 alone, 71 children under the age of 18 were shot in Metro Atlanta; at least 37 died. In response to this growing problem, CHRIS 180 added two teen violence prevention programs in local schools and in the community on the Westside. These initiatives to reach teens, ages 12–17, before they are introduced to gang activity, become involved in violent crime, are incarcerated or killed complement CHRIS 180’s Cure Violence Atlanta program that supports 18–26-year-olds. We are committed to saving kids in our urban cores from violence and these programs are all about prevention and intervention, a critical piece of the puzzle. All three initiatives work closely together with community partners and with families to provide necessary supports, counseling, trauma response networks, healing circles and they foster community engagement in positive activities within the community. Through using community organizing techniques to engage in activities that will help change thinking and norms, violence will no longer be an acceptable or expected behavior for our youth.

THE ROAD TO STABILITY: WRAPAROUND CARE Children and youth are in crisis. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, statistics show increases in depressive symptoms, thoughts of suicide and an overall decrease in mental well-being in youth. In response, CHRIS 180 expanded its Wraparound program which provides intensive, community-based support for youth and their families with moderate to severe behavioral health needs. Working with families enables skills and techniques to be utilized, hopefully reducing the crisis and safety issues that might be impacting them. Many of the the children involved demonstrate a high level of need and in some cases, have been in a psychiatric facility for several months as well as multi-systemic involvement with the Department of Family and Children Services, juvenile court and in some cases, special education courses at their schools. Wraparound teams often include a licensed therapist, a care coordinator and a community behavior specialist who partner with families to create individualized plans. These plans are flexible and are provided at times and in locations such as homes and in the community to maximize success for the youth and caregiving system and create outcomes such as stabilization in school, improved grades, increased attendance, engagement in productive activities, reduction in hospitalizations, out of home placements, overall behavioral health symptoms and increased positive behaviors. Wraparound teams have had many successes over the past year and helped over 642 children and family members successfully remain together, including families with children under the age of eight and families who have been impacted by drug use. CHRIS 180 Wraparound teams use several evidence-based programs including HighFidelity Wraparound, Multi-Systemic Therapy, Child Parent Psychotherapy and Functional Family Therapy.

THE ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE: OUTREACH & COMMUNITY HOUSING SERVICES Makayla faced many challenges in her young life – including being homeless as a teenager. Even as a stellar athlete, obstacles threatened to take her off the path to success. One of Makayla’s basketball coaches took notice and helped connect her with CHRIS 180’s community support and youth development programs.
That support was vital to Makayla finding stable housing and obtaining employment, all while maintaining a 3.6 GPA. Makayla was the first in her family to graduate from high school and also recently graduated from the University of West Georgia.
With joy in her voice and a new sense of possibility, Makayla shared that she now feels she has the resources, confidence and support she needs to change the direction of her life.
Makayla’s story is an example of the culture of care that CHRIS 180 is dedicated to building in the communities we serve.
“The only sense of belonging I had was from my support system; my basketball coach, someone who became a mother figure in my life, and of course the amazing staff at CHRIS 180,” Makayla said. “CHRIS 180 has given me the utmost support and resources. They’ve easily become the family that I always want to make proud. They’ve constantly encouraged me to chase after whatever it is I desire.”
“I’ll always be a proud member of the CHRIS 180 family, and I’ll never forget what doors have been opened for me. I know that CHRIS 180 has me and that I belong. I feel unstoppable, and I know there’s nothing I can’t prevail over.”
