One of the many things we learned over the past two years is that the only true constant in our lives is change. During 2021, CHRIS 180 stepped up to meet the challenge of an ever-changing internal and external environment. The COVID-19 pandemic, racial unrest and continued political tensions created a backdrop of uncertainty that impacted the entire community. Throughout this uncertainly, CHRIS 180 maintained a steady focus on providing counseling and substance abuse services for the many who sought help. And we expanded to meet emerging needs, making organizational changes designed to help us have a greater impact. All of this unfolded as we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our mission to heal children, strengthen families and build community.
In 2021, trauma and mental health took center stage. People began to acknowledge the collective trauma each of us shared after months of isolation, restrictions, fear and the turmoil of racial injustice and political strife. CHRIS 180’s services were needed more than ever as adults returned to offices and wanted to be seen for counseling in-person, as children returned to school and needed counseling, and as individuals and families struggled to regain a sense of normalcy. As a result, CHRIS 180 increased our focus on ensuring the highest quality clinical services for the benefit of our clients and to support and develop our staff. CHRIS 180 re-organized and hired our first Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Anne Cornell, PhD, LPC. Dr. Cornell’s priority is implementing best practices in trauma-informed care across the organization to achieve greater clinical impact, create efficiencies and improve accountabilities.
CHRIS Counseling Centers in East Atlanta, Brookhaven and Lawrenceville served clients at their pandemic comfort levels, with inperson and telehealth sessions
Expanded School-Based Mental Health to 70 schools, brought traumainformed practices, training and clinical services to both students and staff alike
Partnered with CORE and Mercy Care to host more community vaccination events in areas where medical providers were not readily available
Wraparound services for teens and families involved in the Gwinnett County and Fulton County Juvenile Justice systems helped them learn new skills and prevented recidivism
Behavioral health offerings grew through opening of two new At-Promise Youth & Community Centers in South Atlanta & Southwest Atlanta in partnership with the Atlanta Police Foundation
A new teen violence prevention grant was received and will be housed
As the world experienced a continual racial reckoning, at CHRIS 180 we began deeper discussions around the injustices and violence committed against members of minority groups across the nation and here in Atlanta. To support employees, we used the tools we use in the community. We conducted healing circles for staff members as well as clients, and held listening sessions and groups where employees could share their feelings. We are better equipped to help others when we face our own traumas and take care of ourselves.
Famed writer James Baldwin wrote that “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Here at CHRIS 180, we believe in having the tough conversations, bringing all voices to the table to ensure that our staff are supported so that our clients and community receive the highest quality care to help them build resiliency. CHRIS 180 is only able to do this work thanks to your generosity and unwavering support of our mission, vision and values. It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes each of you to power CHRIS 180 into our next 40 years of service. Thank you!

Core to CHRIS 180’s mission is healing communities, both mentally and physically. In collaboration with our partners at Mercy Care and with funding from CORE Georgia, we were able to provide hundreds of residents across the Atlanta area with the first, second and booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. CHRIS 180 staff members joined community members in receiving vaccinations on-site at our clinics in East Atlanta, Southwest Atlanta and on the Westside. Many of the neighborhoods we were able to serve were in areas without free clinics or pharmacies, and our vaccination events were the only options they had to protect themselves from the virus.
Opened the Rainbow House, the first program in the Southeast to serve LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness.
CHRIS Homes rebranded as CHRIS Kids.
the first CHRIS Counseling Center in Atlanta to provide mental health and substance abuse treatment services to the community.
Opened Summit Trail Apartments, to provide supportive housing to youth ages 17 – 24, who are experiencing homelessness or aging out of foster care.
CHRIS 180’s Foster Care and Adoptions Program works to find loving homes for children and sibling groups in foster care. As many as 75% of siblings in foster care are placed apart from their brothers and sisters. This year, our team helped brothers Logan and Layne through our Gateway to Adoption program, which keeps siblings together in a safe, supportive home until they reunite with relatives or find an adoptive family. Their parents, Paula and Kristen, met Logan and Layne when they provided weekend relief for their foster parent. When presented with the opportunity to become the boys’ full-time foster and then adoptive parents, they said yes! Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, they utilized the wraparound support and training from the CHRIS 180 team to build a new family routine and settle in.
Their advice for parents considering adoption and especially for those adopting older children? “Be patient and realize that your first instinct may not always be right for that specific child. And, remember that it may take longer for older kids to open up, but it does happen—so don’t give up!”
Their story shows how community—and patience, flexibility and love— makes all the difference.
Began trauma-informed adoption services and established the state’s first foster home for sibling groups in foster care.

LEGACY
IMPACT & INNOVATION

had to prove myself a lot. But I know what I’m capable of.” Those are words shared by Miaja, a resident of CHRIS 180’s Summit Trail Apartments, our permanent supportive housing community for young adults experiencing homelessness or who have aged out of foster care. After fleeing an abusive relationship, Miaja came to CHRIS 180 without a place to live—but she was determined to build a better future. In just months she received her GED, secured her commercial driver’s license and started a career as a trucker to support her family. Now she is planning to start her own dispatch company and buy a home. With a helping hand, a safe place to live, and hard work, Miaja now has a bright future.
CHRIS 180 team at Summit Trail Apartments, which includes therapists and life coaches, works to guide every person we serve on the path to healing and self-sufficiency, while healing from life’s most difficult circumstances. No matter if the win is big or small, we are proud of all our clients, who continue to build resiliency in their lives.

Youth served through At-Promise Youth &
Centers
• 2,000+ hours of direct services were provided to youth
• 250+ hours of guided outdoor adventures provided to participants
• 48,000 meals distributed to participants and their families
• 52 youth at centers received ongoing therapy
From our foster homes to our permanent supportive housing program, CHRIS 180 has continued to provide safe homes for children and families in our community. When staff members at the Westside Empowerment Center met Deborah Glover, 72, she was living in a shed, without the necessities of life. Mrs. Glover initially asked the team for a bathroom addition to her shed, but once they visited the property, they knew she needed much more.
Thanks to generous donations from the Atlanta Women’s Health Group and others, CHRIS 180 began construction on a home for Mrs. Glover, on the same plot of land where her shed stood for decades. Mrs. Glover will live in the house permanently and two additional efficiency units were built in the home for mothers with young children who are experiencing homelessness. They will receive mentoring from Mrs. Glover and wraparound services including counseling, life skills training and more from CHRIS 180 as they work toward stability.

Opened Integrated Health Clinic in partnership with Mercy Care and Westside Empowerment Center to connect residents to therapy, health care and resources.
Provided well-checks and more than three million emergency meals to thousands of people across Atlanta during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Started the Institute for Spiritual Health and Wellness, opened the CHRIS Counseling Center – DeKalb office and launched the Cure Violence Atlanta program.
Just one year ago, CHRIS 180 established The H.E.R.O. Project (HElping Restore families impacted by Opioids) to provide wraparound services to help children and families build the skills they need to navigate the growing impact of the opioid epidemic. The program provides traumafocused, evidence-based support and counseling for children and youth exposed to or harmed by a caregiver’s substance use disorder. The CHRIS 180 team works with families to help them process their trauma, and then we connect them with support groups, food and nutrition assistance, housing, clothing, furniture and much more. One of our clients is a grandmother, caring for her granddaughter.
The H.E.R.O. project team connected the grandmother to a support group, along with an organization that provided a new home and furniture. Her six-yearold granddaughter now has the princess bedroom of her dreams (pictured below)—and the support she needs to heal. “This program has blessed my family and continues to work on helping us heal through the trauma and loss of our loved one!” she shared.

The COVID-19 pandemic was difficult for everyone, but school-aged children had another layer of challenges with virtual learning. Imagine navigating all of this while moving into a foster home, with other children. That’s the story of Connery, who arrived at one of our homes in 2020, unsure of what his future would hold.
Right away, the CHRIS 180 team provided him with the therapy services, stability and support he needed to gain confidence and move forward as he navigated high school.
“There’s been a lot of growth,” he shared. “I don’t even recognize the person who came into care at CHRIS 180. A different person walked in the door and an entirely different person is going to walk out.”
In 2021, Connery graduated high school with honors and received a scholarship to attend the University of Georgia. He aspires to be a filmmaker and even dreams of winning an Academy Award!
CHRIS 180 remains committed to standing alongside youth like Connery as they heal, grow and make ambitious plans for the rest of their lives.
