Reflecting While Living Through Change Nothing about the past year has been easy. Each of us has been touched by the collective trauma we’ve endured since March 2020. From the COVID-19 pandemic that claimed the lives of millions of our loved ones, to the economic impact on those struggling to make ends meet, to the spotlight on racial injustice with the murders of Black women and men, the targeting of the Asian-American Pacific Islander community and a divisive election season, our lives have changed more than any of us could have ever imagined. One thing that has not changed is CHRIS 180’s commitment to doing everything we can to support those who need us most. This past year, our team went above the call of duty in their work with children, youth, adults and families to make sure their physical, emotional and mental health needs were met. From emergency food deliveries that have served more than one million meals and well-checks that connected seniors and those living in abusive home environments with critical assistance to mental health care, our team members have been essential to the health, wellbeing and safety of the communities we serve. The core of what we do is help people heal from trauma and build resiliency. In the past year, mental health awareness emerged at the forefront of discussions in our nation as people were isolated and suffered grief while being separated from their support systems. Using telehealth and limited in-person sessions, our therapists were able to provide close to 5,000 clients of all ages with essential trauma-informed counseling and support. Many even visited clients at their homes, in their yards and in their neighborhoods to make sure they had counseling, support and a lifeline. Just weeks before the pandemic hit, we opened the CHRIS Counseling Center-DeKalb, our seventh counseling center, expanding our ability to meet the needs of more communities. We had no idea how critical those services would be. At the beginning of 2020, CHRIS 180’s Institute for Spiritual Health and Wellness began and became a blessing for hundreds of people. Coming to this work from a range of faiths, denominations, cultures and backgrounds, students include ordained clergy, seminarians and counselors pursuing certification in providing spiritual care at local hospitals and in our community. As a result of our partnership with Mercy Care, COVID-19 testing and vaccinations were provided to staff, clients and the general community throughout 2020 in addition to services at the CHRIS 180 Integrated Health Clinic. As Metro Atlanta reeled from the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and others, CHRIS 180 launched the Cure Violence Atlanta program, which uses a public health framework to help communities and residents most impacted by gun violence. The program utilizes a variety of methods while hiring and training residents as violence interrupters and credible messengers to work with those who are at the highest risk of committing crimes. CHRIS 180’s wraparound approach continues to prove that embedding ourselves in the community is the key to building relationships and trust. Long after mask wearing ends in our nation, we know the need for our services will grow. There are tough times ahead as we work to restore our economy and heal the divides in our country. But, as we have done for the past 40 years, CHRIS 180 will stand in the gaps and help people build resilience, courage and strength to heal and recover. We need your investment and support. We cannot do it without you and we are incredibly grateful to call each of you valued partners in the work ahead.

Central to CHRIS 180’s work of building community are our place-based efforts in the City of Atlanta Police Zones 1, 3 & 6. One of the hallmarks of this effort is in Neighborhood Planning Unit-V (NPU-V) where we work alongside residents to build a resilient, compassionate community where children can thrive.

In 2020, CHRIS 180 launched Cure Violence Atlanta, with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, in Atlanta’s NPU-V community. The Cure Violence model sees violence as a public health issue. As racial unrest reached a tipping point both in Atlanta and across the nation, our team of violence interrupters and credible messengers stepped in to help residents reduce crime in their community, and in some cases, stop violence before it started, often with the very people who are at high risk of committing those crimes. The CHRIS 180 team is dedicated to building trust in neighborhoods, and we understand that trust must be earned. In its inaugural year, Cure Violence Atlanta helped close to 200 residents and built trusting relationships through healing circles, peace rallies, community events, food distributions and various support groups for all ages.

Meeting Essential Needs When the COVID-19 crisis hit, Westside resident Sheena Hill and her family were left in a difficult spot. The store where the wife and mother of four was working was forced to close. Then, days later, her husband’s repair business came to a standstill. The Hill’s realized quickly they were going to need help. Sheena Hill reached out to several food pantries, but all of them were closed during the early days of the pandemic. Just as she was fearing the worst, CHRIS 180 called. For several years, the Hill family has been involved with the Atlanta Police Foundation’s At Promise Youth & Community Center-Westside. Team members reached out to ask if they could deliver food to the family and Hill was stunned. “They had everything—water, toiletries, cleaning supplies, frozen meat, vegetables. The food was fresh, and it was more than enough for us.”
6 66
CHRIS 180’s food delivery, distribution and mental health well checks not only helped the Hills get through a rough time, but it also provided support to thousands of Atlantans in need in 2020. “Everything would be different,” said Sheena Hill. “There are so many things we wouldn’t have. I don’t know where we would be without CHRIS 180.”

School-Based Therapy Gives Students Hope Sean, an Metro Atlanta high school senior, had a childhood that was marked by trauma. He struggled to maintain relationships with others, battled with substance use and even considered suicide. He wanted help but couldn’t afford counseling due to lack of insurance. He felt stuck. A contract with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities meant that for the first time, there was a School-Based Therapist on campus in 2020. After a referral from his school counselor, Sean started weekly counseling sessions with a CHRIS 180 therapist. His therapist connected him with one of our psychiatrists to help manage his mood swings through medicine and our insurance advocate was able to help him get coverage for his visits. Within a few short months, his mood and outlook made a significant improvement, and gave him hope for his future. “Before CHRIS 180, I can’t remember the last time someone did anything nice for me or gave me something,” said Sean. “I really want to keep doing better and getting better.”

Foundation and Corporate Partners Meeting Spiritual Needs
Foundation, Corporate and Organization Donors, $500+
At the beginning of 2020, CHRIS 180’s CHRIS Training Institute became home to the Institute for Spiritual Health and Wellness, further expanding our commitment to helping clients heal from trauma. Chaplaincy residents and interns complement CHRIS 180’s therapeutic work by guiding and supporting people on their unique path of spiritual health and healing with respect for the beliefs of each individual.

Because hospitals were closed to interns, they sprang into action at CHRIS 180. During the pandemic, interns supported CHRIS 180’s work with youth experiencing homelessness at our DropIn Center, at the Westside Empowerment Center for adults facing physical and mental health challenges and at the Atlanta Police Foundation’s At-Promise Youth and Community Center-Westside. In the summer of 2020, with the stress of COVID-19 rising, calls for long overdue racial justice, and gun violence impacting the city, chaplain interns provided critical support. One of their many healing projects included organizing a vigil at the At-Promise Youth and Community Center-Westside, giving the community the opportunity to grieve together, to celebrate those who had been lost and to find peace during a troubling time. At the Westside Empowerment Center, the chaplain intern partnered with therapists to work in tandem to help clients move forward. “CHRIS 180 has always worked with people at the point of their need— physically and emotionally,” said Martha S. Wright, M.Div., Director of the Institute for Spiritual Health and Wellness at CHRIS 180. “Now we are meeting their spiritual needs as well.”

Donors Drop-In Center Ensures New Mom’s Safety When Kiarra was expecting to give birth in the Fall of 2020, she didn’t have the support she needed to care for her baby. So, she reached out to CHRIS 180, a place she knew could help. Our team knew Kiarra from her visits to our Drop-In Center for youth experiencing homelessness. When she gave birth, they called her every day at the hospital, delivered a bag full of baby and maternity supplies, provided guidance on parenting and found her temporary housing until our Outreach and Community Housing team could secure a long-term solution for her. Kiarra’s family was able to move into CHRIS 180 bridge housing and is anticipating finding a permanent home. She now has her Certified Nursing Assistant’s license and plans to become a radiologist. “I’m proud I was persistent and proud of where I am,” said Kiarra. “I am so grateful to the CHRIS 180 staff for taking time to listen to me and for never letting me feel alone. To me, they’re like family.
