THE FIRST LATINA TO BE ELECTED TO THE U.S. CONGRESS FROM ILLINOIS. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITY IN THE STATE AND ACROSS THE NATION. RAMIREZ'S VICTORY IS A TESTAMENT TO THE GROWING POLITICAL POWER AND INFLUENCE OF THE LATINO COMMUNITY IN AMERICAN POLITICS.
ongress rooted in a community of Latines and that have historically led the fight for food security; safe, affordable housing; migrants' rights; and the protection of our multicultural democracy. I come rooted in my own experience as the daughter of a working immigrant family who knows the struggles of everyday families too well. I come rooted in my values and faith to always unapologetically center and uplift the humanity of all people, regardless of their citizenship status or background. In Congress, my name may be in the door of my office, but I am always conscious that I am here because there is a community right by my side, believing in me, counting on me.”
Congresswoman Delia Ramirez has made history as the first Latina to represent Illinois in the United States Congress. Ramirez, who was born and raised in the Chicago area, has a long history of advocating for social justice and equal rights Prior to her election to Congress, Ramirez served as the Executive Director of the Center for Changing Lives, a non-profit organization that provides resources and support to marginalized communities.
As a Congresswoman, Ramirez has continued to prioritize issues related to social justice, including affordable housing, education, and healthcare. She has also been a vocal advocate for immigration reform and has worked to ensure that immigrant communities have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Ramirez's historic election is a testament to the growing diversity and representation in American politics, and her leadership is sure to inspire many more Latinas and other underrepresented groups to pursue careers in public service.
“As a minority in the minority party in Congress, I understand how challenging it can be to move legislation. But that can’t be an excuse not to rise up to the occasion and find the opportunities to advance legislation that brings us closer to genuinely providing affordable, safe housing, health care for all, accessible education, comprehensive immigration reform, reproductive rights and freedoms, environmental protections, and the protection of multicultural democracy. When I walk into the Homeland Security Committee as the Vice Ranking Member and into theHouse Committee on Veterans Affairs, I am clear on my duty and commitment to make these a reality for my constituents in IL-03. These are human rights, and we need to explore any and all ways available to create policies that reflect that.”
Ramirez's campaign focused on issues such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunity, which resonate with many voters, especially in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The fact that Ramirez is a woman and a member of a historically marginalized community also sends a powerful message about the importance of diversity and representation in our political system
Ramirez's historic win serves as an inspiration to young Latinas and other underrepresented groups who may have previously felt like their voices were not heard or valued. It shows that with hard work and dedication, anyone can make a meaningful impact and break barriers. Ramirez's election to Congress is a step forward in the fight for greater equality and representation in our government, and it is a moment to celebrate for all those who believe in a more inclusive and just society.
One area where Ramirez has been particularly active is in the field of education. She has been a strong advocate for policies that support students and teachers, and she has worked to ensure that all children have access to a high-quality education. Ramirez has also been a vocal proponent of policies that address the student debt crisis, and she has worked to make college more affordable for students from all backgrounds She has been active in a number of different areas, including education, healthcare, and immigration.
In addition to her work on education, Ramirez has also been a strong supporter of healthcare reform. She has worked to expand access to healthcare for all Americans, and she has been a vocal proponent of policies that protect individuals with pre-existing conditions Ramirez has also been a strong advocate for mental health care, and she has worked to increase funding for mental health services across the country.
Finally, Ramirez has been a vocal supporter of immigration reform. She believes that immigrants are an important part of the fabric of our society, and she has worked to protect the rights of immigrants and refugees. Ramirez has also been a strong advocate for policies that provide a pathway to citizenship for individuals who came to this country as children and have grown up here.

Vacation with Melissa unknowingly started when I was doing research for my own family vacation and began to feel overwhelmed with all of the options and stickershocked at the pricing for a family of five. I shared my experience with my husband and told him I wanted to get into the travel industry and learn about how I could help others avoid the tedious obstacles I faced and make vacation planning a breeze. My husband was onboard with the idea and extremely supportive throughout my journey.
I took my time to find an agency that would provide the support and menitorship that you need to be successful in the business, and with an abundance of hard work and determination, I learned so much very quickly
In 2020 one of my clients asked if I would be open to mentoring her and after giving it some thought I caved and we started training. After I shared the news, so many people began inquiring about doing travel with me and I wasn’t sure that I’d be ready
In 2022 we finally branched off and started Vacation With Melissa LLC. We are a thriving Latina-owned travel agency with 10 advisors on the team that I personally train and mentor. We specialize in destination events such as weddings, group trips, honeymoons, cruises, and of course family vacations
As for the future of Vacation With Melissa, we would like to continue to service our clients and better ourselves by gaining knowledge through trainings and traveling to different destinations. We would also like to provide opportunities for growth for others who are interested in the travel industry

Delia M. Saboya exemplifies the embodiment of the American Dream. Originally from Cuba, she immigrated to the United States with her family after losing everything due to Castro's regime. Arriving in the country with only the clothes on their backs, they settled in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, where Delia grew up surrounded by the vibrant blend of cultures and languages that make the Chicago area truly unique.
Delia attended local schools, including Wright Junior College, where she pursued her passion for photography and graphic arts. Graduating from college, she embarked on her career in the print industry, starting as a proofer. She is a proud Latina from the Northside of Chicago who is making a difference in the lives of women all around the country.
Jennifer is also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and domestic abuse. Some of her hardest years were in her 20s when she became a single mother at age 21 and had very little support in raising her daughter. Jennifer was broke, living paycheck to paycheck, with $25,000 in credit card debt and barely making ends meet. She became angry, and resentful, and was involved in many toxic relationships. Jennifer left her last abusive relationship in her early 30s and began seeing a counselor which changed her life for the better. Growing up, she always heard that "counselors just want money," or to "pray and you will be okay" and soon realized those were biases from generations ago. Jennifer began healing from past traumas and abuse and wanted to break down barriers that prevent people from getting help. "Counseling saved my life which is why we offer it for free. Money should never be the barrier to someone getting mental health help if they want it."
Jennifer continued to work hard juggling single motherhood, a full-time job, going to school, and also began investing in real estate on the side. By the time she was 35, she had three investment properties, put herself through college, and also started an Airbnb business. Jennifer became 100% debt free and began sharing her story so that other women can feel empowered to follow their dreams as well. In 2019, Jennifer held her first event in her living room and by the 3rd event, sold out 150 tickets.

Have you always wanted be a hair design/stylist and own a salon?
I NEVER wanted to be a salon owner. I can think back to 10 years ago when I got a glimpse of how much work and stress ownership came with. I said NO WAY. Through the years I realized the GOOD that it could bring and it lit a fire to create something different and innovative
What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment was becoming a mother. We often say " you'll never be ready to be a mom " and as true as that statement is it also made me realize if I can do this, I am able to do anything.
As a small business owner, what is one advice tip you would like to share?
Struggling is very normal and everyone experiences it in some way or another Don't let the bad days and let downs impact your vision that you want to bring to life Remember why you started and how far you ' ve come
What are your future goals as an entrepreneur?
I have an immense amount of seeds I want to plant and flourish but overall I want to normalize being a working latina mother and help fellow mothers push through and realize they can accomplish it all and create a balance that fits their lifestyle.
What are the positive impacts of being in your role?
There are an abundance of positive impacts my role has brought! I have built some of the most beautiful relationships with fellow beauty industry professionals and clients that have trusted me and shared their personal and professional growth over the years.
How do you balance life and work?
Balance is a funny topic because many people believe balance means equal In reality balance is what creates happiness in my everyday life Balance is a daily struggle and there are days when work demands more attention but I always make sure to set aside time to show up when I need to in my personal life It's never perfect but it provides happiness often
What are your biggest challenges, and how do you overcome them?
Letting my anxiety take the wheel is top 3 for sure. I struggle constantly with stress and anxiety and I have found a couple of ways that help replenish my energy while releasing stress and anxiety. Including working out, meditating, reading and journaling.
Who is your role model?
Anytime something negative or unexpected happens to me I instantly bring this quote to mind and remind myself that all situations are put in front of me to succeed.
Mi madre! She is a HUGE reason why I am who I am and how I approach hurdles in life. That woman has never doubted me, my potential or what I am capable of and has always made sure I stay grounded. Once I became a mother I treasured her even more! She continues to support and show up for me and constantly reassures me that everything will fall into place and ride through. (Love you mom)

She then had her 'lightbulb' moment and then &Rise was born. Since then, &Rise has served thousands of women, nationwide, through events, free counseling, free support groups, and educational workshops teaching women about healthy coping skills, healthy relationships, red flags, orders of protection, sound bath meditations, and art therapy events.
Jennifer is a huge advocate for women and for bringing more awareness to the black and brown communities around mental health and speaking out against abuse. Jennifer plans to break the stigmas and negative thought patterns behind mental health. "As Latinos, we are taught to be strong and that we can do it all on our own, but this has been detrimental to our people. Mental health is just as important as physical health. We see doctors when things get painful or intolerable but we do not do this when it comes to mental health. I want to spread the message that it is okay to talk about how you're feeling. It can be uncomfortable to be vulnerable and talk about painful things but that is how we heal and move forward."

Are you a first-time homebuyer feeling overwhelmed by the homebuying process? Don't worry, I've got some tips to help you navigate this exciting but often daunting journey.
By finding an agent that focuses on first-time homebuyers, you will ensure that you have an agent that will take their time to explain the intricacies of buying, along with the patience to help you find the home that is perfect for your circumstances
TIP 3
TIP 1
Get pre-approved for a mortgage before you start house hunting This will give you an idea of what you can afford and make the buying process smoother. Most first-time homebuyers fall in love with a house BEFORE they get pre-approved. This approach will inevitably lead to frustration and disappointment, as often most buyers don’t understand the guidelines that Underwriters use when pre-approving an application. Reach out to a mortgage lender first, to ensure that you have all your ducks are in a row, and that you set yourself up for success.
TIP 2
Work with a trusted real estate agent who has experience working with first-time homebuyers. They can help guide you through the process, answer your questions, and negotiate a competitive offer on your behalf Many realtors focus on listings, or niche markets like luxury, new construction, or renovation markets
Don't rush into a decision. Take the time to thoroughly research neighborhoods, schools, and other factors that are important to you. Find a neighborhood that you love and have realistic expectations about the home. Many times, first-time homebuyers make the mistake of wanting a “perfect home” that they see themselves growing old in. The reality is that most first-time homebuyers do not have a budget that will allow them such extravagant preferences Instead, focus on a starter home that will fit your needs for the next 3-5 years. By starting with a smaller home, especially one that is a fixer upper, you will find a home that will give you less sticker shock and will allow you to build sweat-equity while you prepare for the next home.
Get a professional home inspection before you close on the house This can uncover potential issues and save you from costly surprises down the road. In a competitive real estate market, buyers often make the mistake of waiving their home inspection in an effort to make their offer more appealing to sellers Even if you opt to buy a home “AS IS”, make sure to do your due diligence and get a proper inspection so that you know the true condition of a property. The last thing you want is to waive the inspection and have unpleasant repairs and expenses surprise as you embark on homeownership Getting a proper inspection will help you prepare and plan for future repairs and expenses
Get a home warranty One of the biggest causes of apprehension from prospective buyers is the threat of major appliances in the home breaking down, incurring large, unexpected expenses. For a low monthly payment (usually to the tune of about $50), you can buy a home warranty program that will cover the repair and replacement of all major appliances in a home.
Buying a home is a big investment, but with these tips, you can navigate the process with confidence. Reach out if you have questions and would like assistance setting up an individual plan for you, that will help you get all your concerns addressed Good luck, and happy house hunting!!
