This timeline has been challenging to observe, often leaving me feeling a sense of helplessness However, I eventually came to understand that ‘voter education’ is crucial for fostering inclusivity.

I encourage each of you to ensure you are registered to vote, get to know your elected officials, and engage actively beyond just protesting We must adopt innovative strategies. While protesting is a powerful way to voice your opinions, it’s equally important to take the initiative by:

Launching a support/prayer group Donating funds to families in need Partnering with local organizations to contribute to relief funds Supporting Latino businesses

Together, we can make a meaningful difference

As we turn the page to another chapter, let us remember that our strength lies in our unity and diversity Together, we can break down barriers and build bridges of understanding and acceptance Here's to more years of storytelling, empowerment, and growth!

Thank you for being a part of our journey Let’s keep working together to make a difference

With Gratitude,

Happy Birthday, Chicago Latina Magazine!

Mary Buitron, Real Estate Broker

The first time I was featured in this amazing magazine I was starting in my career, I appreciate the opportunity Linda and the magazine gave me, I knew challenges and obstacles were going to be there but my intention was never to give up. A couple years into my industry, real estate; I faced ups and downs but more than that very blessed from my own community who still trust me and come to me to help them achieve the American dream of owning a home.

As a person who had ITIN and then became a DACA Dreamer I know how hard it is, that’s my specialty to help and assist people with ITIN and those who had doors closed at banks because of their status or English barrier. I’m proud to say that most of my clients are Latinos, people that came here like my parents for a better future for us Some of them are not only first-time home owners, but they are investors who own more than one property and are building generational wealth for their children.

The situation in the country at the moment is very hard, it is affecting a lot of us in so many ways, our mental health has been affected, we are scared, we are intimidated, we are shy to speak up but something that characterizes Latinos is that we never give up That how we will keep doing it, either to invest in a property or achieve other goals we will succeed, because the word “fear” is not to stop our community to grow and reach goals and dreams.

Access to exclusive contracting opportunities across Illinois.

DR. STEVEN MENESES CHAMPION OF EDUCATIONAL EQUITY AND INNOVATION

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MANUFACTURING MATTERS AND MTEC - DALEY COLLEGE

Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Steven Meneses has come full circle, returning to his roots to serve as the Executive Director of Manufacturing Matters and MTEC at Daley College In this pivotal role, he spearheads the Manufacturing Workforce Initiative program with the State of Illinois, driving forward a mission of educational equity and industrial innovation With a rich tapestry of cultural influences his mother hailing from Ukraine and his father from Mexico City Meneses has woven a deep appreciation for family and community into his professional ethos, particularly valuing the growth and success of students

Growing up just two blocks from Daley College, Meneses's journey was deeply influenced by his environment. Despite his parents not having attended college, they understood the transformative power of education, moving the family to access better schools in Chicago. “We were the first Mexican-American family in the public school system in the neighborhood,” Meneses recalls, highlighting the determination of his parents to provide their children with opportunities

His parents' dedication extended to enrolling him in an all-boys Catholic high school, believing it would offer the best preparation Their sacrifices working double shifts to afford tuition instilled in Meneses a profound respect for education His path to higher education began at a community college, where he balanced academic pursuits with his passion for soccer. Eventually, his athletic and academic talents earned him a scholarship to a university in Washington, where he completed his degree.

Upon returning to Chicago with his degree, Meneses initially entered the finance sector, later launching his own business to help small enterprises secure loans His entrepreneurial spirit flourished, expanding operations nationwide However, the 2008 economic downturn prompted a reevaluation of his career path, steering him back toward education a field that had always resonated with him

Pursuing a master’s degree in servant leadership, Meneses embraced the mission of community colleges, places where anyone with the desire to learn could find a welcoming door This passion led him to the Doctor of Management in Community College Policy and Administration at the University of Maryland Global Campus, equipping him with the skills to make a substantial impact on students' lives

Today, as the Executive Director of Innovation in Manufacturing with City Colleges of Chicago, Meneses focuses on bridging educational gaps and aligning curricula with industry needs By forming advisory councils with local technology leaders, he ensures that programs at Daley College are tailored to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market This approach not only prepares students for future careers but also supports local businesses in need of a skilled workforce.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Dr. Meneses aspires to expand his influence by becoming the president of a community college system, where he can continue to champion education for first-generation college students His leadership style shaped by his entrepreneurial experiences and academic achievements focuses on fostering inclusive environments that empower underrepresented communities Dr Meneses’s work is deeply intertwined with his personal journey As a firstgeneration Mexican American college graduate, he understands the barriers many students face. His advocacy for equitable policies and practices is fueled b d i t f ilit t

I OFTEN FELT CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO WORLDS. AS A YOUNG GIRL, MY NAME, MY LOOK, EVEN MY ACCENT MADE ME FEEL DIFFERENT. BUT THAT TENSION BECAME MY FUEL. IT TAUGHT ME TO BE ADAPTABLE AND PROUD OF WHO I AM.

RAMIREZ'S STRATEGIC VISION FOR NBC 5 CHICAGO AND TELEMUNDO CHICAGO IS CENTERED ON BUILDING AND MAINTAINING TRUST WITH THE AUDIENCE AS WELL AS SECURING NBC 5 CHICAGO AND TELEMUNDO CHICAGO'S ROLE AS A TRUSTED NEWS PROVIDER FOR OUR COMMUNITY. THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE IS RAPIDLY CHANGING AND NONTRADITIONAL NEWS OUTLETS HAVE BECOME OUR MOST USED SOURCES FOR INFORMATION. UNDER RAMIREZ'S LEADERSHIP, NBC 5 CHICAGO AND TELEMUNDO CHICAGO ARE ALSO FOCUSING ON CREATING A SEAMLESS BILINGUAL MULTI PLATFORM EXPERIENCE THAT INTEGRATES BOTH STATIONS ACROSS TELEVISION, SOCIAL, DIGITAL AND MOBILE PLATFORMS. A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART NEWSROOM WILL COMPLEMENT RAMIREZ'S STRATEGIC VISION FOR HOW OUR COMMUNITY WILL RECEIVE THEIR NEWS. EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST NEWS GATHERING TECHNOLOGY, FROM ADVANCED LIVE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AND FULLY INTEGRATED DIGITAL WORKFLOWS TO ENHANCED REMOTE CAPABILITIES. THEY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO PRODUCE AND DISTRIBUTE CONTENT FASTER AND MORE DYNAMICALLY THAN EVER BY UTILIZING TV , SOCIAL, STREAMING PLATFORMS, WEBSITES/APPS AND OTHER INNOVATIVE TOOLS SUCH AS VIRTUAL WEATHER GRAPHICS AND AUGMENTED REALITY TO CREATE A MORE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE.

It was a historic day in May 2023 when Sally Ramirez joined NBC Chicago, Telemundo as its Senior Vice President of news “Sally is an exceptional leader with the strategic vision, experience and passion to guide our talented news teams and continue to innovate how we produce and deliver our extensive local journalism and storytelling in both languages,” Kevin Cross, President and General Manager of NBCUniversal Local Chicago stated to NBC 5 & Telemundo staffers after Sally first joined the team

When Sally Ramirez walked back into her hometown of Chicago in 2023, it wasn’t just a homecoming, it was a full-circle moment After more than three decades of shaping some of the most respected newsrooms across the country, Ramirez returned to lead and redefine two of Chicago’s most prestigious media powerhouses: NBC 5 Chicago (WMAQTV) and Telemundo Chicago (WSNS-TV).

For Ramirez, a first-generation Mexican-American who grew up in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, the journey has been anything but ordinary The daughter of hardworking parents who taught her the value of perseverance, she transformed those lessons into a career defined by innovation, courage, and purpose.

Before taking the reins in Chicago, Ramirez made waves on the national stage as Executive Producer for CNBC’s The News with Shepard Smith There, she led a groundbreaking newscast that became the first in NBCUniversal News Group history to seamlessly integrate content from every NBCUniversal property and platform

The result was a program that reimagined what a modern, connected newsroom could look like, and one that grew its audience in the process. One of the most challenging moments in her career occurred during her tenure as Executive News Director at KHOU-TV from 2016 to 2020 Ramirez was tested in unimaginable ways when Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston, even the station’s facilities were destroyed

Under her leadership, the team didn’t just survive, they reinvented themselves. She guided her newsroom through relocation, recovery, and ultimately rebirth, creating a State of the Art, multi-platform operation designed to meet audiences where they are “Sally didn’t just rebuild a station,” one colleague remarked, “She built a vision for the future of local news

Her impact extends far beyond one newsroom or one city. Ramirez’s career includes roles at WGN-TV in Chicago and KGW-TV in Portland, where she spent 17 years rising through the ranks and has been a masterclass in leadership She’s also a living reminder of the importance of representation in media and the power of Latina leadership, there is so much strength and value in our perspectives as leaders ”

As a bilingual Latina, Ramirez has spent her career bridging communities and expanding perspectives in an industry where diverse voices are more essential than ever Her list of honors is long, five Edward R Murrow Awards, four Emmy Awards, and the prestigious Alfred I duPont-Columbia University Award, but her true legacy lies in her ability to inspire others. A proud graduate of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School and DePaul University, where she recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Center for Journalism Integrity & Excellence, Ramirez embodies what it means to rise, give back, and lead with integrity

Sally and her team strongly believe the future of news is fast, flexible and multiplatform. Now, more than ever a news outlet that is fast, multiplatform, and bilingual as well is an incredible resource. WMAQ/WSNS is the only local news duopoly in Chicago who serves audiences in English and Spanish They understand trust is earned by genuinely representing voices and experiences from all 77 Chicago neighborhoods and our suburbs Covering issues that impact real lives education, public safety, housing, health, and local leadership Therefore these news outlets are not only a tool to stay up to date, but a life saving resource.

During this administration, mountains of anti-immigrant executive orders and ice enforcement operations have put our community in an unspeakable amount of danger NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago have covered recent immigration enforcement operations in our city, often as breaking news.

As a duopoly, meaning both news outlets have joint operations, they can cover more ground, mobilize more platforms, and broadcast more real time updates to our community Telemundo Chicago has reported in depth, interviewing families reporting on community impact and investigating overall how our community has been affected NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago have also partnered and worked closely with local advocacy groups to ensure accurate information is being reported and also to help our community understand their rights if the unthinkable should happen For NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago, speed is important but in their words “trust is paramount ”

At the heart of Sally Ramirez’s leadership is a deep commitment to community As the head of news for both NBC 5 Chicago and Telemundo Chicago, she sees journalism not just as a profession, but as a public service “At NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago, we don’t just deliver news, we listen,” she explains That philosophy has guided initiatives like Making A Difference and Marcando la Diferencia, sister programs that spotlight uplifting, solutiondriven stories and highlight everyday heroes from across the city

Through these efforts, Ramirez and her teams ensure that the communities they serve see themselves reflected not just in the stories being told, but in who’s telling them. A cornerstone of that mission is connection. Ramirez works closely NBCU Local Chicago Community Relations Director Carmen Vega on their Community Action Board, a group of more than 300 community members representing health, education, faith, entrepreneurship, and youth development to better understand the issues that matter most “When we listen to our viewers, we learn how to serve them better, not just with news, but with impact,” she says.

This intentional dialogue has built trust across neighborhoods and generations, proving that representation isn’t just about being visible on screen it’s about being present, accessible, and accountable off screen too

Ramirez’s approach to leadership is shaped by her own story as a first-generation Mexican-American woman. Growing up in a Spanish-speaking home on Chicago’s South Side, she learned early the power of perseverance and the importance of using her voice “I often felt caught between two worlds,” she admits “As a young girl, my name, my look, even my accent made me feel different. But that tension became my fuel. It taught me to be adaptable and proud of who I am. ” That same strength now fuels her mission to uplift others, especially young Latinas who are finding their way in spaces where they may feel unseen or underestimated Her leadership style blends heart and strategy, empathy and excellence Ramirez knows that being a Latina in a position of influence comes with a responsibility to lead authentically, to mentor generously, and to make space for others to rise.

“Our stories aren’t just valid, ” she says with conviction “They’re powerful ”

In

a vibrant neighborhood bustling with life, the streets began to hum with the rhythm of salsa and the aroma of freshly cooked tamales. It was the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich tapestryof cultures that span across Latin America and Spain.

Marisol, a young girl with a spirit as bright as her embroidered dress, eagerly joined her community's festivities Her abuela, with stories etched in every wrinkle, recounted tales of their ancestors’ journeys, their struggles, and their triumphs "We celebrate," she told Marisol, "to honor our past and inspire our future "

The plaza was alive with color and sound. Stalls showcased crafts from different regions, each piece a testament to the artistry and heritage passed down through generations. Musicians played traditional melodies, and dancers moved with passion, each step a tribute to their roots.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is essential because it acknowledges the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans in shaping society. It’s a moment to reflect on diversity and unity, to embrace the stories and traditions that enrich our world. As Marisol danced under the stars, she felt a deep connection to her heritage, knowing that her culture’s legacy was alive and thriving.

As a Latina woman with an accent, Roa faced numerous challenges The lack of a roadmap or safety net didn’t deter her; instead, it fueled her determination to prove that leadership is about purpose, not privilege Every doubt cast her way only made her rise taller, transforming closed doors into motivations to build her own pathways For Roa, construction transcended mere work; it became a powerful symbol of transformation, a testament to the idea that change is built, not awaited.

Navigating the construction industry as a Latina presented unique challenges There were times when Roa felt invisible, moments when the system suggested she wasn’t enough not educated, connected, or standard enough. Yet, these barriers became the canvas on which she painted her story of resilience. With grace and grit, she led with intelligence and strategy, refusing to let financial challenges or systemic barriers bend her spirit

Roa’s journey is a testament to her unwavering determination She chose evolution over quitting, driven by a vision larger than herself. Her leadership style, defined by clarity, connection, and value, has propelled L B Hall Enterprises Inc to exponential growth, completing hundreds of projects, both private and governmental

Estefanía’s motivation extends beyond personal achievements. Her drive is fueled by the desire to inspire young women to believe in their potential She wants her story to be a beacon of hope, showing that leadership and strength are possible, even in rooms where no one looks like you Her mission is to impact future generations by leaving behind a blueprint of courage and conviction, proving that success is about how fiercely you decide to rise, not where you start.

An advocate for equity and mentorship, Roa serves on the Board of Directors for Chicago Latinos in Construction (UNIDOS), championing opportunities for the next generation of Latino professionals Her journey embodies resilience, faith, and the belief that our greatest power lies in the legacy we build for those who follow.

We were born to build, to lift, and to lead. Our voices matter, our stories have power, and our legacy begins the moment we decide to rise ”

“We were not born to stay small. We were born to build, to lift, and to lead. Our voices matter, our stories have power, and our legacy begins the moment we decide to rise.”

Breaking Barriers: A First-Gen Latina Building Community

Sisterhood in Northwest Indiana

When I think about Hispanic Heritage Month, I think about resilience, culture, and the power of creating spaces where our stories matter My name is Illiana Melgoza, and as a proud first-generation Latina, I’ve made it my mission to empower women in Northwest Indiana through connection, personal development, and sisterhood

My journey hasn’t been a straight path There was a time when I battled depression and felt completely lost uncertain of my place in the world and disconnected from my own power. What pulled me forward was advocacy and nonprofit work. Serving women who had faced trauma and hardship gave me not only purpose, but healing In showing up for others, I began to rebuild myself

In 2024, I founded Big Sister Hour (BSH), a growing women ’ s networking and empowerment community. What started as a simple idea to create a safe, inclusive space where women could gather, learn, and uplift one another has blossomed into something much greater BSH is rooted in diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that every woman feels seen and valued Our workshops are designed to be financially accessible often free so that cost never becomes a barrier to growth. Whether it’s professional development, entrepreneurship, or mental health workshops that prioritize well-being, BSH offers women the resources and confidence to show up fully and authentically

Beyond our workshops, I’ve had the honor of speaking at Indiana University Northwest and Purdue University, connecting with younger women who are eager to break generational curses and rewrite their stories These moments remind me why representation matters why it’s so important for Latinas to see themselves reflected in leadership and empowered to claim their place

This work has not gone unnoticed. I was recently named a finalist for the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association awards, a recognition that reaffirms the impact of building spaces where women can grow, heal, and thrive together

BSH is about more than networking It’s about building a culture of sisterhood celebrating our stories, sharing our truths, and reminding each other that we don’t have to do this alone.

As a first-gen Latina, representation is everything I know how powerful it is to see someone who looks like you leading, thriving, and creating opportunities That’s why I’m committed to making waves not only in NWI but also in surrounding communities like Chicago, bridging gaps and expanding access for women of color who are ready to rise

My journey is still unfolding, but one thing is certain: I am here to open doors, to hold space, and to honor the generations before me while building a brighter future for those who will come after. This Hispanic Heritage Month, I celebrate the power of community, culture, and the unshakable strength of Latinas everywhere
