WITH CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE LEADERS

Closing the Gap

Karina Ayala-Bermejo

CHICAGO LATINA

WELLNESS

“La terapia es pa’ locos”; a common statement that gets thrown around in our Latine communities. But what is the history behind that statement? Who demonized talking about feelings and grief? Where did our gente hear the negative stigma that limits us as individuals from being human and asking for skillful help? If professional help is accessible, why do we struggle to accept it?

What if I told you that colonization stripped our communities of the therapeutic practices that our ancestors created? Therapy was practiced in our communities long before and was embraced as part of their lives. Our ancestors sought therapy from the town’s Curander@, who provided a safe, therapeutic, and sacred space to be heard, and to consult about their feelings. They ensured their patients would also leave with a wise consejo, ruda, and flores blancas for herbal baths, a remedy for aches, and an amulet para el mal de amores.

Even though our people are resilient and strong, creating and maintaining mental health awareness is crucial to our community because we deserve support and healing, whether at a collective or individual level.

My name is Andrea, your therapy girly! I am a psychotherapist and Founder of Therapy Vibes. I come from a lineage of healers, which made sense when I found the Psychology and Mental Health field fascinating and essential. Therapy Vibes aims to be a sacred space for our gente to find validation, and selfexploration and where you will embark on a journey to inner work, healing, selflove, and personal development.

La terapÃa es para todos! Celebremos la salud mental.

Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month and "Abuelita Medicine"

Feliz National Hispanic Heritage month! What began in 1968 as a weeklong event that highlighted mainly Mexican culture has become a month-long celebration of the history, cultures, and achievements of people in the United States whose heritages hail from many countries of Spanishspeaking America. There is so much to celebrate!

Learning to celebrate my heritage at an early age was very important to my grandmother, Doña Lupe. When the Mexican Independence Day Parade was held in downtown Chicago in the early 1970s, the school year had already begun, but grandma decided I had more important things to learn at the parade. For several years, she and I would dress en nuestros trajes de china poblana and head downtown. We joyfully joined the crowd, shouting, "Viva Mexico!"

Another important part of my cultural education, and perhaps the most important, was Mexican Catholicism. There was always an altar in a corner of our home with La Virgen de Guadalupe reigning over it. December 12th was a special day when we would wear ropa tradicional for morning mass and afterwards, join fellow parishioners to the church basement for tamales, champurrado, and atole.

As much a part of Mexican heritage as corn, beans, and calabazas, traditional healing practices are sometimes seen with suspicion and ridicule, sometimes even as something evil. Although people of many cultures around the world have similar practices in their histories and cultures, they are sometimes considered algo del otro mundo.

My aim is to help demystify some of these practices, provide information and encourage people to consider incorporating some of these practices into their lives to aid them in self-care and well-being.

Referred to today as Curanderismo, the use of plant medicine, candles, incense, massage, talk therapy, and prayer were well-established in the Americas when the Spanish arrived. Sixteenth Century Spanish priests, through the hands of Christianized indigenous scribes, documented practices, rituals, and botanical information in books called codices, that are studied to this day.

In my own childhood home, and probably in the childhood homes of many people with Latin American origins, using herbs to make teas and poultices, lighting candles, massage and prayers were the first line of defense against illness and injury of the body, mind, and spirit. Grandpa affectionately referred to it as "brujerias," his own mother was a practitioner.

When Doña Fidencia, known to me as "Buelita," left Guanajuato, Mexico eventually settling in the Chicago southland in the early 1920s, her skills as a partera, sobadora, and hierbera helped her and her growing family survive physically and economically. Treating men with work related injuries, women having babies, and children with colds and tummy troubles, people with skills like 'Buelitas came to be known in Chicago area boxcar camps, like the Blue Island camp where they lived. In 1923, University of Chicago researchers conducted interviews at several of these camps. One person interviewed explained that many of the residents preferred to see the traditional "healer" rather than visit the free local dispensary.

Practitioners can help people heal from a broad range of maladies of the body, mind, and spirit. While acquiring this knowledge can be a lifetime venture, there are many simple ways that anyone can incorporate "abuelita medicine" into our lives to help support wellness for ourselves and those we love.

Many abuelitas are experts in plant care and often have beautiful indoor and outdoor gardens. While there are many plants that have specific uses for wellness, having any plant (even a faux plant!) in your environment can liven any room and feel warm and welcoming . Another way to incorporate these practices is considering herbal remedies when symptoms of illness first appear. When the school year began this year, we didn't get past the first week of school without one of the kids catching a cold. A couple of Mexican cinnamon sticks simmered until brown, then flavored with honey (not for children under two!) y Salud! My house filled with the fragrance of canela, we all enjoyed a hot beverage, and that cold lasted just a few days. Cinnamon has many benefits to well-being.

However, the most essential tools of the "abuelita medicine" bag are not as easily acquired. Prayer and faith are a foundation for curanderismo, some would argue that without faith, nothing can work. Laura

DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE RUNNING IN CIRCLES ON A RUNNING IN CIRCLES ON A HAMSTER WHEEL? CONSTANTLY ON HAMSTER WHEEL? CONSTANTLY ON THE GO, STRUGGLING TO CATCH THE GO, STRUGGLING TO CATCH UP, AND FEELING LIKE A FAILURE IN UP, AND FEELING LIKE A FAILURE IN ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE? THESE ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE? THESE ARE COMMON CONCERNS I SEE IN ARE COMMON CONCERNS I SEE IN THE THERAPY ROOM WITH MY THE THERAPY ROOM WITH MY CLIENTS. AFTER ALL, WE ARE CLIENTS. AFTER ALL, WE ARE SUPPOSED TO “DO IT ALL AND DO IT SUPPOSED TO “DO IT ALL AND DO IT WELL”. IF WE ARE NOT ABLE TO KEEP WELL”. IF WE ARE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP, THIS IMPLIES THERE MUST BE UP, THIS IMPLIES THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH US. SOMETHING WRONG WITH US.

Unfortunately, with the shift in gender equality in the workforce came some inequality in the home, especially in our Latino households. Many women today are struggling to work full time jobs, climb the corporate ladder, run successful businesses while keeping up with the household duties and being able to live up to the task of being a “buena mujer”. A term has even been coined for this phenomenon, “mental load”. Mental load refers to the invisible labor of planning, organizing and remembering the countless tasks needed to run a household and care for a family.

Our Latino culture has engrained gender roles so much in us from such an early age that despite gender equality, women are still the ones tasked with the responsibility of completing household chores, caring for children, planning activities, scheduling and following up with doctor’s appointments, and the list goes on. Men are often praised for changing a diaper or feeding a child a bottle, as this is not seen as the norm. While women carry the burden of living up to the expectation of having a clean home, well behaved children and taking care of their husband, while also maintaining a job and contributing financially to the home.

This of course has led to significant consequences for women both physically and mentally. The constant demand to do all the things and do them well has led to chronic stress, anxiety, depression and burnout. Long-term stress also increases the risk of heart disease in women and potential strokes or heart attacks.

What you can do first and foremost is to be ok with the fact that we are not able to do it all. Next is seeking support, whether that is your partner, friends, fellow mamas, family, but build yourself a community that can provide help and support. There is no shame in needing help, we all do. Lastly, take care of yourself, if you are feeling good everything around you will feel more manageable. Find a hobby you enjoy, go out with friends, do absolutely nothing, take a long bath, take a nap, whatever brings your heart joy, do that.

Embracing Personal Growth and Mindset: THE POWER OF A LIFE COACH

In today’s fast-paced world, the importance of personal growth and a positive mindset cannot be overstated. As the founder of Mujer Audaz LLC, I have witnessed firsthand how transformative these elements can be. Personal growth is a lifelong journey of self-improvement, while mindset shapes how we perceive and respond to life’s challenges. Together, they form the foundation for a fulfilling and successful life.

The Importance of Personal Growth

Personal growth is about becoming the best version of yourself. It involves enhancing self-awareness, improving skills, and setting and achieving goals. Here are some key benefits:

Enhanced Self-Awareness: Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and motivations helps you make better decisions and build stronger relationships.

Improved Relationships: Personal growth fosters empathy and communication, leading to healthier and more meaningful connections with others.

Increased Productivity: By setting clear goals and working towards them, you can achieve more in both your personal and professional life.

Greater Resilience: Personal growth helps you develop the mental toughness needed to overcome setbacks and keep moving forward.

Fulfillment and Happiness: As you grow and achieve your goals, you experience a greater sense of satisfaction and joy in life. The Power of Mindset

Your mindset is the lens through which you view the world. A growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, is crucial for personal and professional success. People with a growth mindset believe that their abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This perspective fosters a love of learning and resilience essential for great accomplishments 1.

The Role of a Life Coach

A life coach can be a game-changer in your journey towards personal growth and a positive mindset. Here’s how everyone can benefit from having a life coach:

Clarity and Focus: A life coach helps you gain clarity about your goals and priorities, ensuring you stay focused on what truly matters.

Accountability: Regular check-ins with a life coach keep you accountable, helping you stay on track and motivated.

Overcoming Obstacles: Life coaches provide strategies and support to overcome challenges and setbacks.

Skill Development: They help you identify and develop the skills needed to achieve your goals.

Work-Life Balance: Life coaches assist in creating a balanced life, ensuring you have time for both personal and professional pursuits 2.

How a Life Coach Improves Clarity for Long and Short-Term Goals

Goal Setting: Helps you set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.

Prioritization: Assists in prioritizing tasks to focus on what’s most important.

Action Plans: Develops detailed action plans to achieve both short-term and long-term goals.

Progress Tracking: Monitors your progress and adjusts plans as needed.

Vision Alignment: Ensures your goals align with your overall vision and values.

Situations Where a Life Coach Can Be Beneficial

Career Transition: If you’re considering a career change or advancement, a life coach can provide guidance and support.

Starting a Business: Entrepreneurs, like those at Mujer Audaz LLC, can benefit from a life coach’s expertise in business planning and execution.

Work-Life Balance: Struggling to balance professional and personal life? A life coach can help create a more harmonious lifestyle.

Personal Development: If you’re looking to improve specific skills or habits, a life coach can provide tailored strategies. Overcoming Challenges: Whether it’s dealing with stress, anxiety, or other personal issues, a life coach offers tools and support to navigate these challenges 3. In conclusion, personal growth and a positive mindset are essential for a fulfilling life. A life coach can be a valuable partner in this journey, providing clarity, support, and strategies to help you achieve your goals. Embrace the power of personal growth and mindset, and consider how a life coach can help you unlock your full potential.

I am happy to help you reach your personal goals.

CELEBRATING LEADERS 2024

What I treasure most about life is the essence of life itself. As a cancer survivor, the challenging years I endured have gifted me with a profound appreciation for various aspects of life, deeply rooted in the rich experiences I've lived through. The flood of prayers and love that supported my family and me through surgeries, chemotherapy, and medication fills me with immense gratitude, as they have enabled me to be here today. Each day is a blessing—a precious gift. I now live more in the moment, savoring every second with my loved ones. Every moment has become more valuable, and the simple joys of life hold greater significance. I am dedicated to living with purpose, making intentional choices about how I spend my time, both professionally and personally, understanding that life is fragile yet worth embracing wholeheartedly. Motherhood intensifies my gratitude for the love and deep connection I share with my children. I cherish every moment with them, whether big or small, as I watch them grow, support their journeys, and encourage them to pursue their dreams. I also hold deep appreciation for the partnership and unwavering love and support of my spouse, Frankie. Facing difficult experiences like cancer puts the vows of “for better or worse, in sickness and in health” into action, deepening our friendship and love.

Purpose in Grace

Tiana Juarez’s inspiring story is a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. She attributes her successes and the strength to face life’s challenges to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Growing up in a culturally rich household—her father hailing from Michoacán, Mexico, and her mother a Southern belle from Birmingham, Alabama— immersed her in a legacy of hospitality and service. This mix of backgrounds taught her the importance of being kind and helpful. Her parents always went out of their way to assist their neighbors, whether it was fixing cars in the backyard or assisting with English translations before bilingual services were common, which deeply influenced her. These early lessons shaped Tiana into a servant leader, dedicated to continuing the values instilled in her from a young age Today, Tiana is a dynamic entrepreneur, a powerful public speaker, and a passionate advocate for minority communities. Her journey also includes triumphing over cancer with remarkable resilience and strength. Her fascination with business began when she witnessed her father’s courageous transition from a long-term employee to a business owner following a layoff. This experience ignited her passion for business and her drive to bridge gaps for others to succeed. Tiana’s extensive career journey has included important roles with groups like Instituto del Progreso Latino, the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC), and the Greater Southwest Development Corporation (GSDC) to name a few. Her leadership was further recognized through her presidency at the Northwest Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as the “Hero of the Community”. She helped launch a new business training center in Aurora, assisted over 1,000 businesses, and secured $3 million in funding. A proud alumna of DePaul University in Chicago, where she earned a degree in Business Leadership and Marketing, Tiana is known for her strategic insight and ability to design and drive impactful business programs.

In 2019, she founded MPresaria, LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to empowering businesses and nonprofits serving multicultural and underserved communities to achieve their goals through strategic programs, collaborations, and events. Tiana’s life took a dramatic turn in 2015 when she was diagnosed with cancer following an accident at a Chicago festival. The diagnosis, initially delivered as a grim prognosis, led her on a five-year journey of research, lifestyle changes, and unwavering perseverance. By February 2020, with the disease at stage 4 and facing a bleak outlook, Tiana found solace in Psalm 31:5, surrendering her struggles to God. This profound moment of faith brought her peace and a miraculous second chance at life, despite medical expectations. Tiana's experiences inspired her to launch the virtual "I AM Blessed Tour," a platform designed to share stories of miraculous survival and inspire hope. She also launched “Purpose in Grace,” a movement to help women strengthen their faith and confidently pursue their goals. Her “Blessed in Purpose” program helps women overcome obstacles, renew their mindsets and embrace their inner strength and God-given power. Additionally, Tiana’s Cancer Relief Project is a heartfelt initiative that connects cancer patients and their families with vital resources, offering support and easing their journey through the disease. With more than 15 years of working to uplift women and the Latino community, Tiana Juarez continues to inspire others. Her commitment to inspiring others and helping them realize their dreams reflects her deep faith and belief that with God, all things are possible. She couldn’t part without extending to YOU the chance to embrace the same faith, love, and guidance she has found through this prayer: Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, asking forgiveness of my sins. I believe that you died for my sins and rose on the third day. Today, I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Lord come into my life, heart, will, and soul. Adolfo Mondragon, Esq. Mondragon Law Group, LLC

Adolfo Mondragón is a seasoned litigator and appellate attorney with a general, solo practice that serves his community on the Southwest side of Chicago. He is the son of Mexican immigrants and was born and raised in the Back of the Yards, a working-class neighborhood and historic port of entry that was the setting of Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle.

From an early age, Adolfo’s Catholic faith called him to serve his community. Although he always knew that the priesthood was not a good fit for him, the social activism of his Parish’s priests, who protested the illegal immigration stops that were pervasive during his youth, inspired him to pursue a legal career in the public interest.

To that end, Adolfo excelled in school, graduating at the top of his class in both elementary and high school. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Yale and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago Law School where Barack Obama, a state senator at the time, was his professor and mentor.

Adolfo began his career as an assistant in the Office of the State Appellate Defender, where he honed his writing and oral advocacy skills. For the past 18 years, Adolfo has been in private practice taking on cases with individual and public impact. He has practiced before various administrative agencies, in every division of the circuit court, in the federal district court, and in the state and federal court of appeals. Adolfo is a member of the federal trial bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, of the bar of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and of the bar of the United States Supreme Court.

In 2022, Adolfo argued and won a campaign-finance case in which the Illinois Supreme Court held that the payment of legal fees from campaign funds to defend against an indictment alleging official corruption was not an ordinary and necessary expense of holding public office, effectively ending the practice.

Today, Adolfo continues to provide first-rate legal services at reasonable rates to ordinary members of the community and takes pride in the individualized attention he gives each case and in the professionalism he extends to all his clients.

LATINA POWER

As the manager of collaborative organizational partnerships at Dominican University in River Forest and Chicago, Aracelis SanchezGuerrero draws on her experiences as a firstgeneration Latina college student. “I realized I wanted to work at a university and ensure that I’m part of a structure that supports and serves students, especially Latine and students of color because I’m a Latina and firstgeneration,” she says.

Collaborative partnerships aid in this, Aracelis says. In her professional role, she works to connect the university to outside employers, organizations, community members and other universities that share common values and goals with Dominican. These partnerships provide students with experiential learning and career preparation, and also offer professional development to employees of partner companies.

“I’m always thinking how a partnership can help serve our students at Dominican,” Aracelis says. “At the end of the day, that’s all who matters: our students.”

Her current focus is on establishing new partnerships with Dominican’s Chicago campus, opening this fall in Pilsen. The campus will offer a cohort-based associate degree program, credit and non-credit workforce development certificates, adult degree completion programs and select graduate programs.

The associate degree program has concentrations in high-demand fields of cybersecurity, certified nursing assistant, legal studies, and translation and interpretation embedded in the curriculum. Each week, students will take advantage of the “city as a campus” concept for hands-on learning and professional networking outside the classroom. And this is where community partners come in. Lawndale Christian Health Center is one partner that will provide internships and job placements for students in the certified nursing assistant concentration, while additional partners like mHUB (an innovation center) and Pilsen Wellness Center, will host students weekly for immersive educational experiences. Additional partnerships are also being developed.

“I approach strategic partners with what I call a ‘partnership exploration conversation,” Aracelis explains. “I want us to learn about each other and find synergies through an organic conversation. Key points I leave our potential partners with are our mission, our commitment to collaboration and education, and a detailed overview of our Chicago campus initiative.”

Additionally, Aracelis works to establish enrollment-enhancing partnerships in graduate level programs and adult degree completion programs.

Partnerships with UScellular and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, for example, make it possible for employees to enhance their education by attending Dominican at a discounted tuition rate. A collaborative partnership with the National Organization of Victim Assistance allows for employee education and also taps into the expertise of the organization’s staff who can teach as adjunct professors in Dominican’s Trauma Informed Leadership Master’s Degree program, says Aracelis.

Still other partners may send expert speakers to campus or look to Dominican for advice or guidance, she notes.

A self-professed “overachiever,” Aracelis graduated from Dominican University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in international relations, sociology, and women and gender studies.

Like Aracelis, half of Dominican’s undergraduates are first generation, and the wraparound support offered to all students to help them better navigate college has been developed with this in mind. “I found a community and I found mentors at Dominican,” Aracelis says. “That helped the process become a little bit easier.” She is also an adjunct professor of sociology at Dominican, becoming a mentor herself. “Seeing someone who looks like them in the classroom makes students more open to engaging with me about a number of things, like school, relationship and family issues,” Aracelis says. “I think they see me and they think, ‘she got to this place in life, now how can I get there?’”

To inquire about partnership opportunities with Dominican University, contact Aracelis Sanchez-Guerrero at asanche2@dom.edu.
