he touring season is just around the corner and hopefully that corner wont involve any freezing rain, ice or snow. If it does we'll be careful and cautious. In the meantime there's a lot going on in the Chesapeake Region.

As you're reading this, most of you, around 210 members are viewing this from their laptop or some other electronic device because it was delivered to their digital mailbox. After having a hard copy to read and possibility save for as long as the Chesapeake Region has been around this will certainly be an adjustment period. But remember you can always print a copy for your files. Members without e-mail will still receive a hard copy in the mail. There's a couple of reasons for this change. It will save the Region a tremendous amount of money by not having to pay for printing, postage, flyers and envelopes. Not to mention that for as long as I can remember, 20 plus years, Akin Davis and Rod Rydlun have been tirelessly doing all the assembling, stuffing and mailing of the newsletter. It's time for them to relax and not have to worry about this very important task. Thanks a million Akin and Rod. Secondly, with the savings on printing and postage the plan is for the Region to subsidize some of the events we have. This benefit is for members only, meaning if you bring a guest they will still need to pay the going rate for the event they are attending. It should If you are a car guy or gal you need to have these doors pulls in your kitchen. Photo by Larry S. Glenn

be a win win for everyone. The first event that this is planned for is in early June. There's a flyer included with this newsletter with the details. Along with this newsletter, both e-mailed and mailed is an up to date 2018 member directory. I would like to thank our Membership chair, Reneé Cooke for her endless time and effort spent on making this a reality come true. Its been a few years since we have had a directory and if you find an error with your information please let Reneé know so it can be corrected. Now back to our regional events. By the time this newsletter is in your in box or mailbox we will have had three events this year. Next on our schedule on April 20-22 is the overnight planned at the Wayside Inn in Middletown, VA and a tech session and cookout/picnic at Walt Moyer's repair facility. There's a full schedule of events planned, check out the events on page 3. And lastly we are getting started on a new website design that will help us share more information with Chesapeake Region members. Just a note - All photographs including motor cars, members and guests are identified from left to right unless otherwise noted.

The Bentley Meets Bambi

W

ell it really wasn't the Bambi we grew up with, more like a third or fourth generation distant relative that along with the Bentley was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Here's what happened. On a sunny June morning in 2017, I was on my way to Pittsburgh to pick up my travelling companion, Bonnie, and also meet up with Bill Casey and his Phantom II for a casual and scenic drive to French Lick for the 2017 Annual RROC Meet. A 100 miles from home and a few miles into Pennsylvania a fairly large buck decided to have the chicken mentally and cross the road. With a guard rail and a steep hill on the right, I had no place to go and at about 60 MPH things happened pretty quickly. As my buddy would say I threw out the anchor but still hit the rear end of the deer. I was pretty sure the deer was no longer with us and I was unsure what happened to the Bentley. I stopped and saw that the Bentley had some damage. As you can see from the photos it could have been a whole lot worse. I drove a few more miles and decided that I should contact the PA State Police. They were extremely helpful and concerned, asking me if I was okay and B489CM just after hitting the deer. The fender and door was knocked out of alignment from the impact along with some of the paint flying off. The top photo doesn't look that bad but the ripple affect went all the way back to the rear fender. After some skilful body work, the fender and door were correctly reunited and aligned. - Photos by Larry S. Glenn The Chesapeake Lady

if the car was driveable. Saying yes to both questions, the police told me I was all set and they would have a record of me calling. At this point home was a lot closer than French Lick so I turned around and went back to get another car this time with air conditioning and started my trip over. The drive to and from French Lick was uneventful and when I got home it was time to figure out the next step for getting my car repaired and back on the road. After some phone calls and talking with the many friends I have in the club and in the business I narrowed down my search to two shops. Both of these shops were referred to me by friends that I respect their opinions and know they wouldn't steer me wrong. One was in Texas and the other one was near Pittsburgh, PA. Since I was on my own dime to get the car to my choice of shops and back home, I choose the shop in Pittsburgh. Not taking away anything from the Texas shop, but the guys in Pittsburgh were fantastic. Exoticars, the shop I chose for the repair, is located in Wexford, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Rick Jahn and Dave Ley, owners of Exoticars, came up with a plan to get my car back on the road. With Dave's unbelievable metal skills as a fender bender, in a good way, the S1 was on the road to recovery. Dave slowly returned the fender's form back to its original shape. Once he was pleased with that process a very thin coat of body filler was added to smooth and even out the repair. A two part primer-surfacer urethane was applied and block sanded to complete the process. Time for some paint. After a match for the original color was dialed-in and applied, a touch of flattener was added to the clear to replicate the original finish on the rest of the car. The results were stunning. Other than missing the Annual Meet with my car, this story truly has a happy ending. Many thanks to all of those folks that helped me along the way in getting the Bentley back on the road. Top - My biggest concern was the two small creases on the fender well. The car up on jack stands and ready for some of Dave's magic. The large dent taken out and back to its original form before any finishing was started. The body work completed and ready for some color. The hole for the running light post that's goes through the panel between the bumper and the fender also took a hit from the deer and made it out of round. Here it's seen repaired. Trial, error and plenty of expertise lead to a near perfect blend of old and new paint matching.

The almost finished product, just waiting for the bumper and the fog lamp to be replaced. The final color matching is seen completed here. The challenge was trying to blend and match 61 year old paint with fresh paint. As you can see it was quite successful. The Chesapeake Lady

he 2018 Icebreaker bloomed into a beautiful spring-like Saturday on January 27th with over a dozen gleaming machines lined up in a pretty row in front of the Stanford Grill, a new Tower Oaks location in Rockville, MD. Free ample indoor parking was also available. A sushi sampler finally attracted folks inside.

Eight tables in a private back room hosted 43 members and guests for a three course meal from five choices: their signature wood-fired chicken, beef BBQ, meatloaf, trout, or vegan; choice of a garden or Caesar salad to start; and choice of bread pudding or Key Lime Pie for desert.
