s we dive into this special Spring Issue of Cheryl Magazine, we celebrate the powerful voices of Black women through our "Women and Words" edition, with a spotlight on the remarkable work of Storehouse Voices. Led by the visionary Tamira Chapman, Storehouse Voices is creating a vital platform where Black stories are not only told but valued. In a world where too many forces try to erase or silence our voices, this imprint is a space where we can finally be heard, seen, and celebrated.

This issue showcases stories curated by Black women, for Black women, because we deserve to see our truths reflected in the pages of history and literature.

The importance of this focus cannot be overstated. We are living in a time when narratives about Black women are being distorted or even eliminated in mainstream discourse. It is more crucial than ever to ensure that we are the ones telling our own stories. As editor-in-chief of Cheryl Magazine, I am committed to making sure that our voices are never silenced. This magazine will always be a place where we not only find our stories, but also where we empower each other through them. Every word, every story shared in this issue is a declaration: we are here, we are powerful, and we will not be erased.

he magnitude of what you can create when you simply believe—that’s Tamira Chapman, indubitably. If you’re not acquainted, let me introduce you to a true maestro of words and voices. When you think about how the world is connected through stories, how one person’s truth can reverberate across continents and through generations, you think of Tamira.

Every career move, every pivot, every leap she’s taken has been rooted in a singular, unwavering mission: to amplify, empower, and uplift voices, particularly those that have too often gone unheard.

And now, in what may be her most audacious and God-led venture yet, Tamira is launching Storehouse Voices—a collaboration between the Crown Publishing Group and

Tamira, designed to combine tradition with innovation. Storehouse Voices provides authors with both editorial development and integrated promotional platforms to share their unique perspectives. Rooted in the success of the Women & Words program, which empowered thousands of aspiring Black women authors, the new imprint is designed to foster community and inclusivity while offering a dynamic range of fiction and nonfiction titles. "The Bible tells us that we are to go out into the world and bring all of the resources back into the storehouse for God’s good," Tamira shares. "And so we are voices that will be used for God's good in the community." This isn’t just publishing—it’s purpose-driven legacy building.

Tamira’s journey to this moment has been anything but ordinary. Growing up, she was surrounded by women who didn’t just P. 1 1 Cheryl MAGAZINE

survive adversity—they transcended it. Her grandmother, the first in the family to learn to read and own a home, laid the foundation of resilience that Tamira would carry with her. "The women in my family punched above their weight," she reflects. "They faced each obstacle with faith and resilience." That kind of audacity, that drive to stand tall regardless of the odds, became Tamira’s compass.

wasn’t complete. "If you’re working towards something that’s so big and so revolutionary on behalf of others, on days when you would rather give up and quit, you don’t," she says.

"Because you realize who you’re working for." That realization sparked her decision to step away from corporate life and pour herself into work that could serve a higher purpose—work that could serve the community and be led by faith.

Her entrepreneurial spirit ignited early.

In college, without prior experience, she started a web design company, landing her first job through sheer determination and a gift for interviewing. Success followed her into law school and a subsequent career in intellectual property law, where she worked at a top firm before joining Ford Motor Company. There, she didn’t just practice law—she pioneered global e-commerce strategies and crafted legal frameworks for acquisitions and compliance.

That work has culminated in the birth of Storehouse Voices. The platform is committed to amplifying authentic, untold stories—particularly those from women whose voices have long been marginalized.

"We are dealing with authentic and untold stories," Tamira explains. "And then we're leveraging the audience that Storehouse Voices is building to ensure their success."

The response to her vision has been overwhelming. Through the Women & Words initiative, a foundational part of this new venture, over 10,000 women signed up in just 30 days, with more than 400

manuscripts submitted. These numbers aren’t just statistics—they’re a testament to a deep hunger in the community for spaces where women’s stories are heard, valued, and celebrated. "We hope that it messages to the community: If you have something meaningful and powerful to say, we see you too," Tamira emphasizes.

But Tamira’s vision for Storehouse Voices extends beyond publishing books. It’s about building platforms, creating movements, and fostering legacies. "Own your story, own your power," she advises. "It’s not just a product—it’s really your brand, it’s a movement, and it’s a

platform for future things that authors want to do." She wants authors to recognize the longterm value of their work—not just as a book on a shelf, but as an asset that can impact generations. "Creating the right book becomes a generational asset for families that can ultimately pay dividends or royalties for a really long time," she says. "And that's something that we're typically not thinking about."

The name Storehouse Voices is no accident.

It’s a reflection of Tamira’s faith and her desire to steward stories for the greater good. This is about collecting wisdom, truth, and experience and returning them to

the community as a resource—a blessing.

"We really want to give this gift back to the community," she says. "One is readers. Two is authors. But they can't be it if they don't see it."

Her journey to this point—fueled by audacity, resilience, and a relentless commitment to purpose—serves as a reminder that dreams are not just about personal achievement but about the impact we leave on others. "As long as you wake up every day and you agree to put points on the board for your really big dream, you'll always make it. You'll always make it," Tamira says with conviction.

Tamira Chapman is not just launching a publishing company—she’s igniting a movement. Storehouse Voices is an invitation, a call to anyone with a story to tell: Your voice matters. Your story matters. And now, thanks to Tamira’s vision and faith-driven leadership, there’s a place where those stories will be uplifted, honored, and used for God’s good.

CONTENDING FOR WISDOM

oose lips can sink ships. Conversely, using our words to build others up rather than tear them down is a better approach. Our words have a dynamic impact on our relationships, whether they lead to a deeper realm of togetherness and understanding or create uncomfortable wedges that ultimately create distance. Here are a few words worth remembering: "Our words are powerful."

Have you been guilty of saying something and immediately regretting the words that came out of your mouth? Most of us have, understanding that once the bullet is out of the chamber, you can't call it back. Damage control usually follows, bringing with it an uncomfortable apology tinged with the regret that self-control did not manifest itself in a timely manner. Protect yourself from those unpleasant moments by thinking before you speak.

The power of our words demands accountability for their use. Our words can produce death and life, and character assassination falls into the category of words that produce death. Words of encouragement and exhortation impart life. Let's make more loving choices when it comes to the way we use our arsenal of words.

So many of my mother's sayings are deeply ingrained in me. One such saying (when it comes to the use of my words) is "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Therein lies the key to why I have remained silent on so many occasions; I recognize that my words are my responsibility.

A practical exercise for responsible use of our words is applying the golden rule. Think before you speak—a single word can have an incredible impact. I am by no means advocating silence when something needs to be communicated, but here's the thing: Are the words kind? Are you using your words in a way you would like those same words to be addressed to you? Will your words promote good will, or will they cause division?

Our words reflect unique perspectives shaped by our experiences, offering insights into resilience, empathy, and survival. These narratives—whether in memoirs, novels, or oral storytelling—bridge divides, cultivate understanding, and validate shared struggles. Our words carry creativity, innovation, and wisdom that push boundaries and

redefine what’s possible. Choose your words wisely.

Women who use their words to empower and uplift the next generation are the true architects, creating spaces of connection and solidarity to bridge the gaps. To engage in a practice that is guaranteed to make your words more profitable, speak the following affirmations:

I will use my words to build trust and credibility.

Words have the power to shape perceptions and relationships. Thoughtful communication fosters trust, builds credibility, and reflects emotional intelligence. Whether in personal or professional settings, choosing the right words ensures clarity and prevents misunderstandings.

I will use my words to influence and inspire others.

Words can motivate, uplift, and inspire action.

Positive and constructive language encourages collaboration and creativity, while harsh or careless words can demoralize and hinder progress.

Knowing the impact of words allows individuals to inspire confidence and bring about positive change.

I will use my words to promote respect.

Careless or harmful words can cause emotional distress, escalate conflicts, and damage relationships. Using words wisely promotes mutual respect, fosters empathy, and cultivates an environment where people feel valued and understood.

Advancing Black Women in Publishing

by Kimberly Sweet Did you know that Black women with college degrees are the largest percentage of book readers? Yes, we appreciate a good story because we have so many good stories to tell.

However, the transition from reading to writing hasn’t been easy. Porscha Burke is committed to helping more women cross that threshold.

As the Associate Publisher of Storehouse Voices, an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group at Penguin Random House, she is making space for Black stories and preserving our collective legacy.

After a non-traditional path to publishing, Burke embraces using her God-given gifts to serve those who have something important to share with the world. “If your gift is to encourage, then encourage. If your gift is to prophesy, then prophesy. My gift is to get this punctuation right, then edit. And that’s where I am.”

That place is an outgrowth of the incredibly successful Women and Words program, a collaboration between Storehouse in a Box Founder and CEO Tamira Chapman and Penguin Random House. In the experimental effort to educate women about the path to publication, Women and Words drew 10,000

registrants and yielded 350 completed manuscripts. Storehouse Voices aims to keep the words flowing and Burke knows just how to help.

The Queens, New York native has spent her life at the feet of matriarchs who were readers at home, work and in between. “We are working women and so we have an hour and a half commute on a bus and on a subway every day.

What are we doing in that time? We’re reading books.”

Reading and editing are second nature for Burke. As a third grader, she made notes in the margins of Rolling Along, her classroom reader.

“I edited that textbook. And to me, I didn’t know it was editing. I thought it was grading. I was doing to the textbook what my teachers did to me.”

She also read beyond her grade level with early exposure to Phyllis Wheatley, Sojourner Truth, Mary McLeod Bethune, Toni Morrison and Langston Hughes. As a child of the 80s, Burke is not only reading classic black literature, she is also surrounded by Hip Hop culture. In the blocks surrounding her home you could find Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest, LL Cool J, and Run DMC. “I am immersed in a landscape of Black poets,” she explains. “I’m not a rapper, far from it, but I am influenced by the power of Black storytelling. That’s very much who I am.”

In pursuit of “the prize” of a college education, Burke made her own choices and was responsible for handling all the details. She first attended Manhattan Country School on the Upper East Side with “snooty people, pseudo intellectuals.” Then found a home at an all-girls boarding school just outside of the city. The school gave Burke everything she needed—a strong college prep curriculum, a music building, computer lab and large library. More importantly, she found her tribe.

“Sisterhood and solidarity was real,” she said.

She enrolled at the University of Virginia joining many Black New York City private school alums. While for many college is the gateway to the future, Burke felt college itself was the “prize.” She had arrived. “I wasn’t there to think about how this was setting me up for my future because I wasn’t there to meet the husband. I was there.” She just planned to finish her four years, have a good time and head back home to a magazine or publishing job.

Graduation did not provide Burke a red-carpet rollout from the publishing world. Instead, she landed a job at a Wall Street temp agency as an administrative assistant. From there, Burke transitioned into the music business, accepting a position working directly for the president of a small boutique record label. At the age of 22, Burke had a blast her first year. three, that turns. “When the protection of your boss runs out,” she says, “things are going to go left for you. Things went left for me and I had to leave.”

The experience turned Burke inward and searching. The result was a much deeper relationship with God. “Just the reality of the presence of a living God was just so powerful to me at a certain point in my life. And so, then it was clear. I need to find a new job. How do I do that? How do I pray for that?”

Her answer was to apply for a job at Random House. She did not apply for just one. She applied for every job she felt capable of doing as often as every day. After four months, she was hired to be the executive assistant to the president and publisher of the company. Burke found that all of

her previous experiences made her more than qualified. “I was hired because it was an exact one-to-one skills transfer when I went into interview.”

She started at Random House in 2004. As executive assistant to the Gina Centrello, Burke became “the gatekeeper to one of the most important and powerful and beautiful gatekeepers of this business.”

Through her position, she got to know the majority of the people at the company. The more she learned, the more her ultimate goal of becoming an editor became clear.

“Editors might only be 7%, 10% of a publishing company’s staff, but the other 90% only get to work on what the editor has acquired for the company. It’s a lot of power.”

Burke was given the opportunity to develop her skills with editors and learn the business from the inside. At that time, race, identity and representation weren’t discussed in the office.

“You’re watching things that don’t seem fair in the setup. But who am I to judge this? I’m not here to judge it. I’ve wanted to work here (at Random House) forever.”

“So, I’m just going to serve. I can use my gift, my God-given gift of words to help serve storytellers.”

In her years learning the craft and growing as an editor, Burke showed range and depth. She worked on several projects within the company and earned an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College. Skills, experience and education elevated her to the upper echelons of her profession. She brought works to life from several authors ranging from presidential biographer Jon Meacham to beloved literary icon Dr. Maya Angelou. Far more than just a copy editor or grammarian, she developed strong relationships with those she worked with and always looked to bring others along.

“I can guarantee you that the people I work with, the way we have just edited our own missions together, I served in this business.”

Burke is excited about exponentially increasing the number of authors she can serve and help get their work on the shelves and into the hands of readers through Storehouse Voices. All of her skills and experiences are coming together for the benefit of this new venture with Tamira Chapman, bridging her business experience with the publishing world.

“Instead of me learning all of the things about a publishing business while serving a publisher, now I get to inform and prepare a publisher to hold space where she’s been a dynamic business person. I get to be her publishing encyclopedia and help her understand this landscape so that we can serve in new ways together.”

Burke will also rely upon life lessons, like one from Dr. Maya Angelou. When Burke insisted upon being addressed casually, Dr. Angelou told her, “Your ancestors had to suffer the indignity of calling others by their article and last name and just being called whatever first name, whatever name they felt like. I’m conferring dignity upon you by calling you Ms. Burke.”

That moment is one Burke pays forward in service, conferring dignity and access to women writers eager to share their work.

Her goals for women writers engaged in this process are clear.

“I want her to have three things as a result.

One, that she believes that her words matter.

That her words are special, that her words are beautiful, that the things she has to say are worthwhile, that they have value. She is able to share those words and be heard by the people who will value them. And then she sees the lasting potential of that power and how the people who receive her beautiful words and who value them are able to confer value on other people.”

While Burke says she is not a writer, she is getting words on the page, books on the shelf and creating a new community of readers. Her effort gives us value today and for generations to come.

H ealing Through Words

veryone has a story, a unique narrative shaped by struggle, fear, depression, or trauma. But these stories are far from being downers; they have the power to bring forth a new day, sunshine, and success. Think of all the proficiencies we have accumulated over the years. Our stories are not just personal experiences but potential sources of inspiration and empowerment for others.

On the outside looking in, a picture is worth a thousand words. However, the story leading to the picture is probably worth a novel. Many look at photos of rich and famous moguls and gurus or even at simple posts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and think, I would be happy if I had that. These pictures of perceived happiness are only as good as the story behind them.

The struggle or trauma behind a story should create an automatic response to seek help.

However, in some cultures, the scarcity mindset often emphasizes competition over community support, and the need to be perfect or accepted can outweigh the fear of shame around reaching out for help. As we age, it is important to share the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and the powerful stories we hold with generations, young and old, who can benefit from our perspectives. By sharing our stories, we illuminate our experiences and preserve traditions, helping to maintain our family history.

Not only will sharing our stories, wisdom, and knowledge help those who reach out to us.

Let’s not forget about the silent sufferers.

“Just Write!” This is the philosophy I use when coaching my therapeutic writing clients.

We all have a story; write it down and share it. Whether journaling, creating a memoir or manuscript, write down your thoughts, dreams, responses to life, and affirmations.

You can make your writing accessible in shared writing spaces such as online platforms, blogs, vlogs, and published works.

Here are a few tips to inspire us to extend our reach, share our stories, and effectively provide support for others.  Everyone faces challenges we may not be aware of and deals with them differently.

Remember, silence is a response.  Refrain from responding to an emotional outcry with comments or judgment. Judgment creates more pain and stigmatizes physical, emotional, or spiritual needs.  Change your mindset. Resources, counseling, or therapists are no longer taboo.

Some needs stretch beyond what we can address on our own. Encourage those in need to seek the appropriate help.  Share your memoir with future generations. We cannot rely solely on schools or books to teach our history.  Use family gatherings to establish new customs, share stories, connect with loved ones by reflecting on the past, and restore traditions.

In closing, just write!

Building Bridges in Publishing: Elevating Black Storytelling with Jenn Baker

ennifer Baker, or Jenn, is a true bibliophile. It’s clear from the overflowing bookshelves that fill the wall behind her in our Zoom interview to her artfully exuberant way of speaking.

“My aunt, one aunt, taught me how to write and read before I went to kindergarten, and then I was just doing the writing thing. They would always support it—here's some books, here's some this, here's some notebooks, here's some crayons, here's some that… They just always nurtured and supported literacy,” Baker reflected.

It’s what makes her new title as Editorial Director of Storehouse Voices the perfect fit for the self-proclaimed lifelong student of the written word.

“It does feel like this is the beginning of a moment that can really do something to bring more people in, especially people of the Black and African Diaspora. So I'm very, very excited about that,” Baker remarked.

Storehouse Voices is Crown Publishing group’s new imprint, aiming to elevate Black voices through excellence in fiction and nonfiction alike. The imprint is partnering with Storehouse In A Box, LLC, a global merchandising company, recognized in 2022 as the eighth-fastest-growing woman-led enterprise worldwide.

“I think we’re going to have a really big presence in Black spaces, and we’re going to develop strong partnerships. We’re thinking about the ways that we can partner and be present for these spaces—for the bookstores, for the literary communities that are building that with families across the nation,” Baker said.

Baker, a native New Yorker and an accomplished editor, author, and podcast creator/host, joins a team of powerhouse Black women in publishing. The team includes award-winning entrepreneur Tamira Chapman, with whom she has partnered to develop Storehouse Voices.

“Tamira Chapman, like many of us on the Storehouse Voices team, is about community-building and communitymaking. We’re about sharing stories, building bonds, creating resources, and supporting dreams,” Baker shared.

Storehouse Voices aims to create publishing opportunities for authors of various backgrounds and areas of expertise, sparking a new era of great writers. It will also foster a pipeline of opportunities, from building relationships with independent bookstores to sowing seeds of interest in the next generation of readers.

“I’m enthusiastic about (a) building grassroots spaces to consider how we engage readers at all ages, (b) sharing more and more Black stories, and (c) empowering people to be creatives, if they so choose, but also to know that their voices matter in whatever medium or mode fits,” says Baker.

In our hour-long conversation, we discussed everything from our favorite childhood reads (she loved The Babysitter’s Club and Fear Street) to her preference for audio books over eBooks. (Print books, however, are still her go-to.)

It's easy to see why Baker excels at all her creative endeavors, whether it’s her podcast, Minorities in Publishing, or her latest YA novel, Forgive Me Not. “I feel like people forget that I'm an author and that I've spent most of my life investing in my craft as an author. And so that feeds me as an editor, that feeds me as a teacher, that feeds me to be able to engage with people in a different way,” Baker observed.

Baker attended John Bowne High School in Queens for creative writing, but she quickly noticed certain things were missing from the curriculum.

“Outside of Black Boy, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Their Eyes Are Watching God, I didn't read a lot of books by people of color in high school, and that would follow through to college,” Baker says.

It was during her time at City College of New York, where she earned her bachelor’s in English and creative writing, as well as her MFA in creative fiction writing, that Baker really began to understand the importance of reading diverse literature, even though the likes of James Baldwin, Dorothy West, and Lucille Clifton were often missing from the syllabus.

“It was interesting, and I don't necessarily find fault with the educators on that point, because they were great educators, but I do find fault with the lack of representation,” Baker remarked.

Now, leading Storehouse Voices’ editorial strategy, Baker has the opportunity to expand upon the presence of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) representation in the world of literature.

“We are building literary spaces, ways for our children to get what they need that they are not getting in schools. Those are the things I've always wanted to really focus on in publishing. We are building readers and getting access, not just giving books away.

We are building readership and building that love of reading and what books can do,” Baker observed.

Because, as the great Toni Morrison once said, “If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.”

That’s exactly what the dynamic team at Storehouse Voices intends to do—empower writers with the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences with readers who are starving for cultural nourishment.

DADDY ISSUES with Tess Alexandria

Choosing Me. I was talking to one of my cousins the other day, and we happened to start chatting about the state of our current family dynamic, which led to sharing our experiences with our parents when we were growing up. Neither of us grew up in a two-parent household, and although we both wish certain things could’ve gone differently, we now understand as adults the power of giving grace to our parents.

I told her that during the holidays, I was able to hear stories from my nana about some of the things my dad had struggled with. I discovered that not only was he having a hard time showing up for me, but he also had challenges showing up as a son, brother, and significant other.

My cousin said one thing she always appreciated was the fact that my mom never spoke poorly of my dad to me. Natalie had lived with my mother and me briefly during my childhood, and she remembered the moment I started to recognize that I didn’t have access to my dad in the way I desired.

She recounted a fathers’ event at my elementary school when I was five. My dad didn’t show, and I apparently told my mom something to the effect of, “Dad never calls me or comes to see me.”

As the day went on, I continued to think about that memory Natalie shared with me and my feelings around my father. I became curious—was five the age when I started feeling like I wasn’t enough? Interestingly, I have no recollection of that school event or saying that to my mother.

As I continued reflecting on my childhood memories, I was reminded of a therapy session from earlier last year, in which I shared that I’ve always wanted to be chosen. Could it be that the sense of not being chosen was imprinted on me at the age of five? And from there, I started overcompensating, little by little, in my relationships to get people to choose me back?

During that session, the therapist asked me to reflect on what being chosen looks like to me: What does it affirm, discount, or cancel out? It wasn’t the easiest set of questions to answer at the time, but now I can say it affirmed my worth. It made being loving and caring towards others worth it. I felt like I mattered.

When I stopped assuming people wouldn’t choose me and stopped hiding myself, that’s when my relationships deepened, and new connections flourished."

Being chosen looked like me being someone’s everything. On the flip side, not being chosen felt detrimental. It caused me to question my worth and value. It created negative internal dialogue and did a number on my self-esteem. It seems the idea of not feeling chosen had been eating away at my confidence since childhood based on my conversation with Natalie.

Presently, I am not as concerned about feeling chosen as I used to be, which I noticed even before my conversation with Natalie. What changed?

Ultimately, I started choosing myself, but I took it a step further by allowing all of me to show up in every space I was in.

I stopped worrying about what others thought. Since I can’t control whether people support or are drawn to me, I focused on becoming and nurturing the version of myself I wanted to share with the world. To my surprise, once I adopted this thought process, I started connecting with people on a much deeper level. When I stopped hiding, and assuming I would not be chosen, my current friendships and relationships deepened, and new connections flourished.

Choosing yourself will look different for everyone, and there will be different versions of what this looks like in each season of life, but it is truly rewarding. Not feeling chosen by a parent can leave a scar, but my shared examples of how I’ve chosen myself are proof that it does not have to define you for the rest of your life.

Thank you for joining me again for Daddy Issues. Why the name? I aim to reverse the feeling women get every time we hear that phrase. There is a stigma attached to it. It’s often used as a weapon, with the intent to make us feel like we are the problem. Dispelling the misnomer includes providing new information on something that was named before its true nature was known. I’ll attempt to do that in each Cheryl Magazine issue as I address behaviors and characteristics that developed from our father’s lack of skill and ability to bond with, encourage, teach, or support us. To all the young girls and grown women, it was never your fault.

Rewriting the Narrative: Inside Chelcee Johns' Vision for Literature and Change

I had an amazing sit-down with Chelcee Johns, senior editor and now executive editor with Penguin Random House, in charge of acquiring, editing, brainstorming about the launch, getting books out onto the market, and caring for authors. It’s a job with many hats, to say the least, but she has found a way to balance it all gracefully. With an undergrad degree in broadcast journalism and a master's in print and digital media from NYU, Chelcee has been able to work alongside and be mentored by senior editors from InStyle and Oprah Magazine.

Her passion, credibility, and trustworthiness are evident to the authors she works with; they tell her repeatedly that they love working with her. Chelcee has led an exciting life in many aspects, notably living as an expat in Indonesia and also being a writer herself. So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

Tess: Hi, Chelcee, it’s great to meet you! I’ve had the chance to learn a bit about you, but for our readers who may not be familiar with your work, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Chelcee: I've worked in publishing for seventeen years now in one capacity or another. I'm an acquisitions editor, and I’m in love with the written word in all its facets and forms. I come from Detroit, but I’ve been in New York for about fourteen years, and it is, of course, one of the literary hubs. I truly believe in writing as a safe space to keep stories that we need to have for decades to come and in the power of language to transform lives, so that’s kind of me in a nutshell.

Tess: That’s awesome, and I really love how you referred to writing as a safe space. As a child, you were really into reading, and you mentioned on your website that you used to go into salons and were always very curious to see what others were reading. Clearly, your love for reading and writing started at a very young age.

Chelcee: Yeah, I’d say so. I loved books and was an only child. There's only so much you can do by yourself, and reading is certainly one of those things. But you know, I think there were moments, maybe in high school—the first time I read If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin and the first time I read Toni Morrison and the likes of Audre Lorde, just dynamic storytellers and testimonykeepers—when I fell in love with what language could do.

I also was a big reader in college. I worked at the writing center; I was always an editor in some way, but those kinds of books I just mentioned were early spaces for me to see myself, see my community, and see the power of

safekeeping stories. I also think the Black church played a role in my understanding of the power of words, whether written or spoken, to organize, to safe keep, to find peace and joy. As a young person, I was intrigued by how pastors told stories and looked for language and storytelling in other places.

Tess: You mentioned activism. What movements were you a part of?

Chelcee: In my early days, I believe around the time affirmative action was being challenged when I was in college, I did a lot of movement work. It was primarily focused on making sure that colleges kept diversity and everything that's being challenged right now in this current administration. That often meant going to different colleges and organizing protests or having meetings with boards. Our voices were heard, and some changes resulted—not in every school, of course, but most certainly in some. And then, in the last five to seven years, maybe the last decade, my work has really centered on police brutality and the number of lives being taken.

Tess: Wow, important movements to say the least. And to have hit the ground running in college shows you’re not new to this.

Chelcee: I will not age myself, [laughing] but I’ve seen a big trajectory in my work in activism. Whereas the first part of my activism was really on the ground, I think today, while it’s still on the ground in certain ways, it’s also about bringing the right voices to the forefront in every space because those voices are needed. That is also a part of social justice work and equity work, so I think it has evolved into my work, being part of my activism.

Tess: Are social justice and equity the defining principles for all the books you work with?

Chelcee: While I wouldn't say that every book involves social justice, I have three words I use to define my list: agency, intellect, and heart. Agency is books that are able to make change. Intellect is books that leave you with wisdom, and heart is books that are emotionally engrossing. To me, a book should be able to do all three of those things. It needs to get me excited and make me want to stay in it.

Tess: Lately, I’ve been selecting books that offer escapism, but when I think about it, books that I consider all-time favorites have elements of agency, intellect, and heart.

Chelcee: I have an author who describes it as “putting medicine in candy.” So, you’re reading a book because it’s entertaining, and the plot is pacy, and the momentum is great. The voices are witty and characters are sexy, but at the heart of the book, there’s also a story about gentrification. So how does an author do that in a way that the audience is excited about the read, but also still hitting on issues we should be talking about?

Tess: Not an easy feat at all. This makes me think of something else on your website. You said you knew early on the power of words to create community and honor stories often forgotten. Can you take us back to the moment you first realized that and how you came to that understanding?

Chelcee: A lot of that is tied to my younger years, but I remember re-reading Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison my freshman year of college, around the time of hurricane Katrina. And I just remember the juxtaposition—a moment of seeing the hurricane happening on TV and reading Song of Solomon and recognizing the ties between our everyday lives and the stories that are created, along with the wisdom they can offer. That moment was powerful for me, allowing me to see what language can do and the conversations a book can spark. I recognized the power authors have. Great authors are also citizens of the world and society, and they use their voices to effect change.

But my days as an activist also played a part in that understanding. I saw how literature could organize and how language could move people to organize and get things done.

Tess: Isn’t it amazing the lasting imprint a book can have on you? I’ll never forget how reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor changed my life as a child.

Chelcee: Certainly, a great storyteller can leave such an impression.

Tess: You’ve published both fiction and nonfiction, from the more serious, hard-hitting works to upmarket commercial fiction titles, from the forthcoming book by attorney and civil rights leader Damario Solomon-Simmons to When the Music Hits by Amber Oliver and the NAACP Image Awardwinning Rootless by Krystle Zara Appiah. There is a lot of range between these titles, some vastly different stories.

How involved are you in the selection process?

Chelcee: There are times when you inherit an author through an agency or because an editor has left, so you’re assigned a book. But normally, every book editor is in charge of the books they acquire. So, a literary agent pitches a project to you, or you find an author you love and go after them. But you, the editor, have to love it first and foremost. From there, the book goes to the team, and you

explain what you read, why you loved it, and why it should be published. I'm very involved. I'm the first reader who says we should talk to the author or try to buy it. I look for things like great voice, plot, and intention to reach new readers, speaking about the world in the way that we will need to continue to speak about it for years to come. This is typically the case for every editor. It’s a personal taste process for sure, and you have to have an eye for great writing and great storytelling.

Tess: Based on the wonderful things authors have said about you, I can imagine the majority of what you pitch is well received.

Chelcee: Certainly. There are times, of course, when I love a thing, but it’s maybe not the right time for it or the right place. So, you learn as you grow through the industry that you’re not buying only for your taste.

Tess: Although you’re not buying solely for your taste, are there topics you’re particularly passionate about that influence your decisions?

Chelcee: This is a hard one because the answer is yes and no. Sometimes I won’t know I'm looking for something until I get it in my inbox. However, I love great prose, crossover fiction, and great voice. Sometimes I look for great style as well as a compelling topic. I want books with impact and emotional and cultural resonance that make me think about the world and our place in it.

Tess: Speaking of authors, without giving away too much of your magic sauce, of course, how are you able to connect with authors such as Zakiya Dalila Harris (The Other Black Girl), Krystle Zara Appiah (Rootless), and therapist Dr. Joy Harden Bradford (Therapy for Black Girls), as well as activists like Rachel Cargle? You have also worked with the likes of Alice Walker and Ntozake Shange.

Chelcee: I do think that meeting with the author early on is important to align the visions for the project. That author meeting gives me an opportunity to share more about what I do and what the book imprint does. It’s also a moment to actually connect with the author and share that I understand how we publish their book and what we need to do editorially, and it gives us a chance to see if we have the same vision for it. It’s such a vulnerable place to have your work edited and critiqued, so knowing how to do that in the right way is essential. We need to convey, “We all want to make the book the best it can be.” And I go into every author relationship like that. It’s really a relationship, building space where authors learn to trust you. But it’s a great experience and I’ve had several authors share that they feel I’ve helped them become better writers.

Tess: What a feeling to bring an author! I must ask, what was it like working with Alice Walker and Ntozake Shange?

Chelcee: It was such a privilege, and Alice Walker was just a learning experience, whether it was how she organized her poetry or what the work should do, whether it was love or activism or relationships. At one of the events for her collected journals, someone asked, “Why did you keep all this?” It was probably sixty to seventy years’ worth of journals, and she replied, “I knew the people coming behind me would need a map.” I just thought that was brilliant. I was giddy. It was an amazing experience to work with her.

With Ntozake Shange, God bless her and all the work she’s contributed. When I was working with her, she wanted the business part done, but there was also a connection in the sisterhood that she easily has and exhibits. It was an astounding and beautiful experience. Great wisdom from both women and transformational.

Tess: Truly amazing experiences. It’s clear that your working relationship with writers includes author advocacy. What does that mean to you, and why is it so important?

Chelcee: Really, it means holding their vision in their book and heralding it through the publishing landscape.

It’s being able to take their vision and translate it for the company and how we want to publish it and who we're trying to reach. Author advocacy is also about finding new authors. It might entail going to colleges and universities to speak about how to become an author and gain access to the publishing industry, because it can feel like a gated community if you’re not in it.

Tess: There’s a lot of talk about gatekeeping in several industries and how hard it is for up-and-coming artists, writers, actors, etc. to make headway, so it speaks volumes that you’re intentional about sharing what the process is like within your industry.

Chelcee: Thank you!

me to grow in various ways. The Bolognese culture slowed me down in a way that America does not. But one thing I can say that has been at the core of all my work—from returning to corporate America when I first got back from abroad to more recent years—is not being easily stirred.

Crises will happen, but being able to gauge how much of a crisis something is or is not and to respond accordingly is a practice of mine. Maintaining a certain level of inner peace is so important, and I think I learned that when I was living abroad. There is something about traveling solo and being in a new place that allows you to see yourself differently and find a different level of peace.

Tess: I agree. Everything here is so fast-paced, and I often wish there were more opportunities to slow down. It’s great you were able to know yourself in a new way. Before we wrap up, is there anything our readers should be expecting from you this year?

Chelcee: I do a lot of speaking at different colleges and universities, but I’d also like to highlight the Black-owned Kweli Journal’s International Literary Festival in NYC; I will be speaking there. But in terms of things to look forward to, I have a robust list of books I’ve been working on for release this year such as The Grand Paloma Resort by Cleyvis Natera and When the Music Hits by Amber Oliver. I think your readers would enjoy both for sure.

Tess: I’m sure they will! This has been awesome, Chelcee.

Tess: I read that you lived abroad. Can you describe life as an expat? What led you to do so, and what was the experience like?

Chelcee: The company I was working for was shifting to remote work, and I thought it was a great time to go abroad since I didn’t have to be anywhere for work. We don't get a lot of time when we can just see ourselves with no distractions. When you remove yourself from the things you normally rely on, you ask who you are in those spaces.

riting has always been a powerful source of healing and transformation in my life. From childhood journaling to adult writing, I’ve seen firsthand how words can shape lives and communities. I have the honor of contributing to Cheryl Magazine by writing about health and healthcare issues. I delve into the topic of how certain conditions uniquely impact Black women, with a focus on empowerment through knowledge and storytelling. My goal is to empower readers with knowledge about certain issues to spark awareness and conversation. Each articles presents an opportunity to inspire change and expand the conversation on health equity.

Maya Angelou once said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” This rings true not only for dreams and ideas that evolve into literary works, but also for personal narratives that bring voice to everyday experiences. In times like these, we cannot afford to remain silent about the challenges we face—especially as Black women navigating healthcare systems that often fail to serve us equitably. Our stories have power, and through them, we reclaim agency and demand change.

Our ancestors from the continent of Africa used storytelling to pass along the wisdom and lore of their tribes and cultures. Elders carried the responsibility of passing down stories that preserved history, tradition, and practical knowledge. These tales often included lessons about nature, medicine, and healing, ensuring the wisdom of the ancestors endured through the ages. The power of our voices has always been there, deeply rooted in our heritage.

Growing up, my grandparents and parents rarely shared personal insights about growing old—how it impacts you mentally, physically, and emotionally. Past generations stopped speaking, not because they didn’t realize their power, but because they knew those in power feared it. So over time, we lost our voice. Silence became a means of survival, but that silence also created a void, leaving younger generations without the wisdom of their ancestors’ experiences. By sharing our stories, we bridge that gap, ensuring our legacy is one of dialogue, resilience, and empowerment for those who come after us.

Just as our ancestors used storytelling to preserve wisdom and tradition, we too must harness the power of our voices to reclaim agency and demand justice.

Visionaries like Harriet A. Washington, who documents

the harrowing history of medical exploitation of African Americans in Medical Apartheid, and Dr. Camara P. Jones, whose framework, The Gardener's Tale, employs a poignant allegory to expose the layers of racism, have illuminated the deep-seated impact of systemic racism on the health and healthcare of African Americans for generations. Their groundbreaking work, along with that of many others, has brought health disparities to the forefront and driven the advancement of health equity.

Building on the legacies of those who have used their voices to illuminate systemic inequities, this year my nonprofit launched the Health Equity SOS series—an initiative dedicated to amplifying the stories of individuals navigating the US healthcare system. SOS stands for “Sharing Our Stories, Saving Ourselves,” and through this platform, we invite people from all walks of life to share their perspectives. These narratives not only shed light on how the system affects everyday lives but also underscore the urgency of collective action. Together, our voices have the power to drive meaningful change. We can no longer wait for someone else to save us; we must save ourselves.

As women, we often channel our power into helping others.

We nurture our children, support our families, and uplift our communities. We shape organizations and influence governments. Yet, too often, we neglect the person staring back at us in the mirror. It’s time to turn that collective power inward—not out of selfishness, but out of necessity.

By focusing on self-care and collective empowerment, we can break cycles of self-destruction and lift each other up. We deserve safe and equitable healthcare and a reasonable quality of life.

Our voices are not just tools for advocacy; they are instruments of transformation. Let us use them to demand equitable, trustworthy, and dignified healthcare—not only for ourselves but for the generations of women who will follow. Together, through storytelling and collective empowerment, we can build the lives and the world we envision and deserve.

A Great Day In Publishing

I couldn’t believe it when Milton sent the video. He’d scouted a location, at my request, for a photograph of today’s book publishing professionals, inspired by the work of the greats: Art Kane and Gordon Parks. Those two legends had photographed jazz icons and hip-hop masters (respectively), in front of a quintessential brownstone in Harlem, NY. But Milton hadn’t selected a brownstone.

The video he took showed the majestic front of the historic Riverside Church in the City of New York.

And there couldn’t be a better location.

I’d reached out to Milton Washington, the brilliant, Harlem-based photographer who, alongside novelist Connie Briscoe, brought the book Stepping Out to visual life. When I edited Stepping Out, our comparative title was Contact High, " an inside look at the work of hip-hop photographers told through their

most intimate diaries—their contact sheets.”

That book included shots of the famed Gordon Parks photograph, “A Great Day in Hip-Hop.” For years I sat with a printout of that photo at my desk. As a child of hip-hop culture—in every sense of the phrase—my ability to hold space in an iconic literary organization such as Penguin Random House was made possible because of that beautiful, powerful, original art form. Inspired by the poets and modern-day griots who soundtracked my life—Q-Tip and Phife, Posdnous and Trugoy the Dove—I accepted early on that being good at words was cool and felt uniquely purposed to help connect new generations of storytellers with the audiences that need their message. My medium would be pages more than stages, but the heart was the same—especially hailing from the streets of NYC.

And now, Milton was suggesting a venue for our re-creation that also held special meaning to me.

Riverside Church was where we memorialized Dr. Maya Angelou in 2014.

It was where I encountered the powerful psalms of Dr. James A. Forbes Jr. (its senior minister emeritus) and the beautiful messaging of Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, whose tenure at Riverside informed our work on her book, Beautiful and Terrible Things.

I could think of no more fitting location for this moment.

When Cheryl Magazine invited Tamira Chapman to be photographed for its cover, Tamira asked for our full imprint, Storehouse Voices to be included, stating that her innovation in publishing is more a collective achievement than an individual one. When she shared that idea with me, my mind flashed back to that Gordon Parks photo—thinking that the founding of our new

imprint is really a story of generations of publishing successes. Storehouse Voices is here because of the work of so many others— all the Black girls and men and beings who walked publishing house hallways without much representation, or who were welcomed in times when Blackness was in vogue, but not necessarily nurtured once sociopolitical climates changed.

Toni Morrison, an editor before she was a novelist. Marie Brown, an assistant before becoming an agent and mentor to icons.

These are just two of the icons whose work paved the path for our new venture. And in this photo, their legacies are elevated by those whose names often go unheralded—our foreign rights and contracts directors, our royalties managers and marketing assistants, our production editors and book designers.

What a blessing to see them all cheering, during this Black History Month where we all feel an acute need for community, for respect, for solidarity, for an image inspired by the art forms (both jazz and rap music)

that helped give a certain voice to the culture, helped us be heard far beyond the chambers of our local juke joints or pulpits. I could not be more grateful to have participated, to have helped curate, to have carried decades of inspiration with me and share in that light with our beautiful publishing colleagues. We were well-met by writers who also understand the power of that place and of music: Deesha Philyaw, Damon Young, Robert Jones Jr.—not to mention newcomers to the industry. There are so many others whose hard work and extraordinary efforts still don’t get the respect or the praise they have long deserved. But it was a great day in publishing. And it’s more important than ever that we persevere to ensure the great days to come for writers, readers, storytellers, and listeners worldwide.

Be Beautiful, and Extravagant, but most of All, Be Bold to Grab What's Yours in this World!

magine holding your dreams in the palm of your hand.

Suddenly, those dreams slip away because of fear. Fear can be a dream killer within each of us, but resilience can confront and overcome it. For many years, I let fear hold me back. I feared starting a business, writing, speaking in public, and being transparent about my life journey. These fears kept me from moving forward until I addressed their source.

My fear traces back to childhood when I was most impressionable. A teacher once told me I wasn't good enough and tried to place me in remedial classes twice. She threatened to fail me numerous times. I didn't know how to express my feelings; I grew up in an environment where children were seen but not heard, and questioning adults was not allowed. As an escape from reality, I immersed myself in novels, which became my saving grace. Those books allowed me to conquer challenges with characters that resembled me. Reading allowed me to become beautiful, extravagant, and bold in my world.

The negative connotations were still there. However, it did not permanently break me. There was a light within waiting to shine in corners of darkness that tried to cover me.

The negative words from that teacher haunted me for years, causing me to doubt myself. I constantly challenged my abilities without realizing my true potential. That spirit was dimmed when I was just 10 years old. The root of my fear rested in the labels others placed on me over the years. However, a significant change occurred in my 40s. I stopped caring about what people said or thought about me. I released the negative comments that had previously held me back in life. I recognized that I had more years behind me than ahead of me. This realization inspired me to empower women in their relationships and careers. I knew someone was waiting for me to transform into an unstoppable woman. I needed to be an example for women to level up in life. God provided me with a lifeline to withstand every obstacle placed in my path.

The walk toward realigning my thoughts was hard, lonely, and scary. It was necessary to teach others to remove fear and negative connotations from their life. Never allow someone's opinion of you to become tattooed in your spirit. It will stain your life until regaining, reconstructing, and reviving your self-worth. Those are the steps I took to let go of fear. Finally, I was free.

I took my power back to walk through doors that once were closed due to fear. The journey from a silenced child to an empowered adult wasn't about healing. It was about claiming my sovereignty.

I have consistently proven no one can label me every time I launch a new business venture, step on the stage, share my story, and express my truth. My experience has taught others to be beautiful, extravagant, and bold in claiming their dreams.

MY AUNTIES' RECIPES

by Antoinette Jarrett My Aunties’ Recipes is not just a cookbook but a love letter pieced together like the family photo album or an old quilt. The aunties, uncles, and others who brought comfort and nourishment —laid hands in prayer, wiped tears, bandaged knees — often demonstrated their love for you through food.

Most of what’s written in this love letter was passed down by oral tradition, studying the works of others, and by improvisation— each one making it their own. Part of this love letter pays respect to all the nameless, faceless, and forgotten masters in the kitchen who came before us. Honor them, while still making the meal your own. That’s the purpose behind this love letter written in food.

Unleashing Authority With Your Words

id you know that out of the heart, the mouth speaks? What if I told you that your mouth can be a direct reflection of your heart? If the heart breeds corruption and negativity, so will your words. It is important to be mindful of your words and guard them carefully. Many times we may wonder why we are having so many problems in our lives and ask, “Why me?” Truthfully, most of the outcomes in our lives are the result of what we have been speaking out of our own mouths. Is it possible that we have become products of our environment?

For example, if you grew up in a negative environment and all you heard or saw was negative behaviors, that environment could have an impact on your words.

Toxic environments can create counterproductive thoughts, which in turn, produces undesired outcomes. Pay attention to your thoughts, which become words, which become actions. You have the authority to change the trajectory of your life by speaking your desired outcome.

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those that love it shall eat its fruit.”

In other words, your words will produce a positive or negative outcome, and you will be subjected to the consequences of what you speak. There’s power in the tongue! You have the authority to change your circumstances by professing greatness over yourself.

It is time for you to live the life that God has designed for you. The time has come for you to UNLEASH AUTHORITY with your words.

The thought of unleashing authority sounds powerful, doesn’t it? There is no magic potion or mystery. The key component to unleashing authority starts with you and the words you speak daily. I challenge you to get a journal and take an assessment of yourself.

Every time a negative thought comes to mind, write it down. Remember, I stated earlier that your thoughts become your words. At the end of the day, take every negative thought you wrote down, turn it into a positive thought, and speak it out loud. If you are in a space where you can’t write it down, immediately arrest that negative thought and speak the opposite. The more you do this, the easier it will become to recognize the power of unleashing authority with your words.

You are taking back the power of your thoughts and planting seeds for a fruitful life of abundance. Try this for 21 days and watch what happens to your mindset.

While I saw myself as a positive person, interactions with people God placed in my life helped me realize I needed a mindset shift. After receiving feedback from several people highlighting areas they thought needed improvement, I did a self-assessment.

It’s easy to speak life into and over someone else, but imagine going through life speaking life to everyone except yourself. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t devaluing myself; however, I wasn’t using my words to produce a bountiful harvest. My words were not conducive to the abundant life I desired, and I knew I needed to take action. If you’re wondering what I did to shift my mindset, I’m about to tell you!

I started with gratitude, praying, and thanking God for the little things. That one simple daily change helped me start my day on a positive note. Speaking positive affirmations was another daily habit I established.

“I open my heart and allow wonderful things to flow through me.”

“I speak joy and happiness, for I know the good I do is not in vain.”

“I am enough.”

The more I continued my new daily practices, the more aware I became of my thoughts. Now, before I speak, I ask myself, “will these words build up or tear down?” There are times when I miss the mark by speaking first and thinking afterward. When that happens, I immediately feel a deep conviction. Those are the times I give myself grace, turn it around, and start again, realizing that it takes consistency, prayer, and strength.

Feeding your mind and spirit with positive words of affirmation builds an abundant thought life. As I continue to grow, I realize more and more of the authority that my words carry. My words have the power to heal, build up generations, remove obstacles, mend broken hearts, and change the lives of those around me. I have learned to unleash authority with my words!

Roni Talley sits down with Dr. Antoinette "Toni" Alvarado, founder of the annual Harmonize Your Life Retreat, and two impactful attendees, Melodie Boone and Yolanda Alexander, to discuss the vital importance of prioritizing self-care and the transformative experiences at the retreat.

Roni Talley: Dr. Toni, welcome!

Let’s start with you. Can you share your story and what motivated you to create the Harmonize Your Life Retreat?

Dr. Antoinette Alvarado: Thank you, Roni. My journey began in childhood as the oldest of four girls, which instilled in me a natural inclination to care for others. However, after years in ministry, balancing family and pastoral duties, I reached a breaking point. I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a stress-induced thyroid disorder, and realized I had neglected my own well-being. This wake-up call led me to focus on selfcare and share that journey with others through the retreat.

Roni Talley: It’s incredible how you transformed your struggles into a platform for helping others. Melodie, you were one of the original attendees. What compelled you to participate?

Melodie Boone: I’m an ordained pastor and a life coach, but I found myself overwhelmed after losing my daughter to cancer. I was exhausted from ministry responsibilities and not prioritizing my own health. Dr. Toni is my mentor, and attending the retreat became a vital step for me. I learned that to serve others

effectively, I had to first take care of myself.

Roni Talley: You mentioned the profound revelation you experienced at the retreat. Can you elaborate on that?

Melodie Boone: Absolutely. In Aruba, I felt liberated for the first time. Surrounded by supportive women, I realized I could say yes to myself and my dreams. The experience ignited my passion, leading me to write a book, launch a podcast, and empower others to discover their gifts.

Roni Talley: That’s powerful.

Yolanda, what was your experience like when you first attended the retreat?

Yolanda Alexander: Initially, I joined because of my in-laws' invitation. I didn’t know what to expect but was drawn in by the sense of sisterhood.

The retreat was a revelation.

When Dr. Toni asked us to write down three things we loved about ourselves, I couldn’t come up with any. That moment highlighted my struggle with self-esteem. Since then, I’ve embraced self-care practices that center my well-being and happiness.

It’s about creating time for yourself, setting boundaries, and understanding that self-love fuels the ability to love and support others. Each retreat has deepened my awareness, showing me that it’s okay to invest in my own growth.

Yolanda Alexander: I agree. It’s about being intentional and surrounding yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary for sustaining relationships and fulfilling our roles.

Roni Talley: Dr. Toni, what’s on the horizon for the next Harmonize Your Life Retreat, and how can readers participate?

Dr. Alvarado: We’re excited to host the next retreat from January 8th to 12th, 2026, in Los Cabos, Mexico. In Loving Memory of Bryan K. Kindred (1960–2025)

fter another failed relationship, Anna was ready to exhale, give up on men, and embrace her single life.

Her previous love had been interrupted by long-distance challenges, and her rebound relationship was based on all the wrong things. As a result, Anna decided to keep her future relationships casual and free. One night out with the girls, all of this changed when she met David. Initially thinking it would be just another adventure, she declined his advances.

Despite her rejection, he persisted in trying to engage her in conversation.

He was tall, dark, and handsome, exuding confidence. He’s just my type, she mused to herself. This time will be different. After a few drinks and some engaging conversation, she found him intriguing. He was unlike anyone else she had met before, but she wasn’t seeking love. When he asked if he could see her again, she hesitantly replied, “Sure.” They exchanged numbers and then parted ways.

Anna woke up thinking about what an interesting guy David was. Later that day, her phone rang. It was him. She answered in a sweet, low tone, “Hello?”

“This is David. We met last night. Is this a good time to talk?” he asked.

“Yes, now is fine,” she replied.

After ten minutes of small talk, they laughed and connected on many levels. Before she knew it, two hours had passed.

They agreed to meet up again the following evening. After about two weeks, Anna thought, Hmm, he hasn’t even tried to kiss me. He was the perfect gentleman—opening doors, pulling out chairs, and even asking permission to hold her hand. However, the lack of any physical advances left her confused. She wondered if he was gay, strange, or not attracted to her.

It was puzzling because he seemed eager to see her and talk on the phone daily. Anna decided that she would ask him the next time they spoke.

“Why haven’t you tried to kiss me?” she inquired.

His response was reassuring: “I like you and didn’t want you to think physical intimacy was all I wanted.”

He seemed perfect; he had the looks, intelligence, refinement, and a strong career drive—quite different from the men Anna had dated before. She and David were now an official couple.

As their relationship progressed, they soon became engaged and then married. Everything was going great until Anna noticed just how ambitious David was. Marriage had made him even more focused and motivated to climb the corporate ladder. The more he advanced in his career, the more he withdrew and emotionally disconnected from her. He thrived on work and structure, and this intensity spilled over into their home life. It felt like they lived by a rulebook, reminiscent of the Stepford Wives.

Daily routines looked like this: Get up, go to work, come home, eat, sleep, and repeat. Oh, and sex was on a schedule too. Everything had to be perfect, with him having the final say.

Whenever Anna bought something for the house, he would thoroughly examine it, and within days, he would replace it with a newer, larger, and more expensive version. This pattern continued with various items, from small appliances and clothing to food and gifts for others. She began to feel like her thoughts and feelings didn’t matter. Why do I feel this way? she wondered. After all, he is a great provider—though not much of a friend— and we appear to be the pictureperfect couple.

Anna discovered she was pregnant and convinced herself this would bring them closer together. (For the record, never think this way.) David was so career-focused that Anna threatened him to take time off to be with her during the delivery. About a year later, they decided to take a weekend trip for her birthday, leaving the baby with her mother. It seemed like a good idea; perhaps they could finally focus on each other.

However, the excitement of flying out for the weekend faded when David announced they would drive to their destination. Determined to lift her spirits, Anna decided the road trip would give them more alone time.

They arrived in New Orleans, went sightseeing, and enjoyed a delicious meal—a great first day.

She was excited about the next day’s adventure, but everything came to a screeching stop when David woke up, gathered his things, and said, “Well, we’ve done everything and seen the town; I don’t know why we need to stay another day.”

Without thinking, Anna said, “What the hell? It’s my birthday, the first time I’ve had to relax away from my mommy duties. Are you serious?!”

Time and time again, this behavior surfaced in every scenario. Anna finally realized David’s order of priority in their marriage: Work, structure, kids, rest, and then Anna.

By this time, Anna had enough. She prayed, cried, and cried some more.

Nothing changed. She yelled and argued, and for a brief moment, a small glimmer of hope appeared, but things slipped right back to the old habits. Anna was at her lowest point.

In tears, she cried out, “God, help me!

I am doing everything you said to be a good wife and mother. But I am so unhappy I want to leave.” She cried again, “Lord, why have you forgotten about me? Why won’t you answer me?”

At that moment, God said, “I hear you, I see your pain, I have never left you.

You have done everything. Now, see him as I see him. Look at yourself first, then see him through my lens, and then orchestrate a conversation.

Seek first to understand, then be understood.”

Anna dropped to her knees and prayed for strength, patience, and understanding.

After praying and talking with David, Anna began to understand: - He wasn’t trying to “one-up” her; he wanted the best for his wife.

- He wasn’t putting other things before her; he believed that the harder he worked, the more he could provide for their family.

- He wasn’t emotionally disconnected; his love language was gift-giving.

- The weekend drive included him renting a luxury Jaguar for her birthday (Anna’s dream car).

- He cut the weekend short to spend more time with her and the baby.

Anna was not trying to make excuses for David. He had his vices. But she realized there are two sides to every story, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. Without communication and taking the time to look through the lens of others, we can see from only our own perspective.

Understanding and looking through the lens of others can also reveal negative aspects. Discovering what is genuinely in the heart of others can help you navigate the path God meant for your journey.

Anna not only discovered another side of her husband, but she also discovered God’s grace.

A Hug in a Bowl You Never Knew You Needed

by Shannon Skipper Green Jarrett I love taking the time to bring beautifully curated meals to my family’s table. It brings me such joy to seek out organic ingredients—or grow them in our home garden—and stock them in our pantry. Cooking has always been a creative outlet for me, a way to show love and nurture those dearest to me.

The last year has been a difficult one for me, as it has been for so many of you. From family loss to moving back up north and overhauling my family home, finding ways to incorporate healthy meals hasn’t always been easy. If your 2025 has looked anything like mine, you may have had a cough, a sneeze, or simply felt the urge to shed a tear or two. In those moments, when my loved ones need a little pick-me-up, I always pull out the pot and make a big pot of soup. It’s the perfect cup of comfort to get us through any situation.

As Executive Curator, Cheryl gives me the honor of sharing this passion with our readers by gathering recipes for each issue. Over the years, I’ve often called on my dear friend Heidi Pearson (food photographer extraordinaire) to help bring these issues to life. From cocktails to cuisine, she’s just as excited as I am about the aroma of a beautiful mirepoix or the wafting scent of duck fat sautéing in a pan. For years, we’ve cooked and eaten together—sometimes in person, other times over the phone. It’s simply what we do.

This bok choy noodle recipe is light, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make with just a few ingredients! It’s packed with tender baby bok choy, seafood mushrooms, and rice noodles in a savory broth that comes together in 15 minutes. When you need a quick and cozy hug-of-a-meal, this recipe has you covered!

If you love simple, nourishing soups, this bok choy noodle recipe is a must-try!

Bok Choy Noodle Soup From the kitchen of Heidi Pearson Ingredients: 2 tablespoons avocado oil 1 shallot, thinly sliced 1 serrano pepper, thinly sliced (optional for heat) 3 cloves garlic, minced 6 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth) 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon maple syrup 1 tablespoon rice vinegar 8 ounces seafood mushrooms (or your favorite mushrooms) 8 ounces rice noodles (medium or wide) 4–5 baby bok choy, halved lengthwise Chili garlic sauce, sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, and chopped scallions (for garnish) Instructions: Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the avocado oil. Add the shallot and serrano pepper; sauté until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in the garlic for 30 seconds, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 2: Build the Broth Pour in the chicken broth, soy sauce, maple syrup, and rice vinegar. Stir to combine and bring the

mixture to a gentle simmer. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed—if it’s too sweet, add more soy sauce; if it’s too salty, add a bit more sweetener.

Step 3: Cook the Mushrooms and Noodles Add the seafood mushrooms and rice noodles to the simmering broth. Allow them to cook for 3–4 minutes, or until the noodles are tender and the mushrooms have softened.

Step 4: Add the Bok Choy Gently place the baby bok choy halves into the soup. Simmer for another 2–3 minutes, just until the bok choy is crisp-tender and still bright green.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve Ladle the soup into bowls and top with chili garlic sauce, sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, and chopped scallions if desired. Serve hot.

Heidi’s Tip Because this soup comes together so quickly, it’s important to layer the ingredients in the right order. Cooking the shallot, serrano pepper, and garlic in oil first builds a deep, aromatic base.

Allow the mushrooms and noodles to simmer in the broth so they can soak up the savory flavors, and add bok choy at the very end to keep it crisp and vibrant.

Roasted Tomato and Garlic Bisque with Rosemary Ingredients 2 pounds Roma or cherry tomatoes 1 whole head of fresh garlic, halved crosswise 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped (plus extra for garnish, if desired) ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper (or to taste) ½ teaspoon sea salt (or to taste) 3–4 cups vegetable or chicken stock (homemade stock elevates this dish, see recipe below) ½–1 cup heavy cream (or coconut milk for a dairy-free option) Instructions: Step 1: Prep and Chop Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the Roma tomatoes in half or into thick slices; if using cherry tomatoes, simply halve them. Halve the head of garlic crosswise.

Step 2: Roast Arrange the tomatoes and the halved garlic head (cut side up) on a large baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, then sprinkle with rosemary, salt, and cracked black pepper.

Roast for 20–25 minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft and starting to brown around the edges, and the garlic is tender and lightly caramelized.

Roasted Chicken Stock Makes approximately 6–8 cups Ingredients Bones from a roasted chicken (or one whole chicken) 1 onion, halved 2 celery stalks, cut into chunks 2 carrots, cut into chunks 1 handful fresh parsley 1 teaspoon black peppercorns 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste) ½ lemon 2 bay leaves 2 sprigs fresh thyme Optional: 1 small piece of fresh turmeric 8–10 cups water (enough to cover bones and veggies) Instructions: Step 1: Roast the Chicken Bones If you’re not using leftover roasted bones, place a whole chicken or raw bones on a baking sheet and roast at 400°F (200°C) for 30–45 minutes, or until golden brown. This step enhances the flavor of your stock.

Step 2: Combine Transfer the roasted bones (or roasted whole chicken) to a large pot or slow cooker. Add the onion, celery, carrots, parsley, black peppercorns, salt, lemon half, bay leaves, thyme, and optional turmeric. Pour in enough water to fully cover the bones and vegetables.

Step 3: Combine and Simmer Transfer the roasted tomatoes, garlic, and any pan juices to a large pot. Carefully squeeze the softened garlic cloves out of their skins directly into the pot. Add the stock and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Let it cook for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 3: Simmer or Slow Cook On the stovetop, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface. Let it simmer for 3–4 hours, partially covered. If using a slow cooker, set it to low and cook for 8 hours, or until the flavors are well developed.

Step 4: Blend with Crème Use an immersion blender to purée the soup until smooth, or transfer it to a regular blender in batches. For an ultrasmooth texture, strain the blended soup through a finemesh sieve. Stir in ½–1 cup of heavy cream (or coconut milk), adjusting for your preferred richness. Avoid bringing the soup to a rapid boil once the cream is added. Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or rosemary as needed. Serve hot, garnished with a sprinkle of fresh rosemary or a drizzle of olive oil if desired. Enjoy!

Step 4: Strain and Store Carefully strain the stock through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean pot or large bowl. Adjust seasoning with more salt if desired. Use the stock immediately, or let it cool and store.

Shannon’s Tip Save your scraps. Whenever you’re chopping veggies or have leftover chicken, don’t throw them out. Put them in a sealed zip-top bag and keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to make your stock. It’s an easy way to reduce waste and boost flavor.

It’s a problem that’s caused confusion, delays, and no shortage of stress at airports worldwide. Finally, in 2025, the travel industry is making a change that frequent flyers like me have been waiting for—a standardized carry-on size across airlines. This long-overdue solution promises to simplify packing, streamline the boarding process, and eliminate those dreaded last-minute surprises at the gate. It’s a game-changer for anyone who values smoother, more predictable travel experiences.

The decision to implement a universal carry-on size comes in response to years of traveler complaints about inconsistent policies. Airlines recognized that the variety of carry-on dimensions frustrated passengers and created inefficiencies during boarding and inflight storage. The new standard aims to simplify packing so that travelers no longer need to guess which suitcase will fit overhead bins. A single size applies across most airlines.
