The Beginning of a New Era at Jordan Vocational CCA

In the heart of Midtown Columbus, Jordan Vocational College and Career Academy has welcomed students back with many opportunities to learn and achieve success. During the first fourteen days of the new school year, students have been becoming accustomed to the new policies and initiatives that are in place to foster an environment conducive to learning—an environment where students are excited to come, where they can take their

core classes while learning a skill, or join a new club.

This year, Jordan is launching an innovative program called RISE with Terry Morgan, focused on experiential learning and real-world applications. Additionally, Jordan has introduced new or returning clubs like The Robotics Club, which provides students with the chance to build teamwork, problem-solving, and engineering skills. Clubs like these, along with their required core classes, will have students at Jordan ready for the next stage in life.

“We want our students to be prepared for the challenges of tomorrow, not just in terms of knowledge, but in their ability to think creatively and work collaboratively,” Principal Hutson said. “Our goal is to inspire them to be lifelong learners.”

JVCCA is also deeply committed to strengthening its ties with the local community. The school recently hosted its Open House, an event common in local schools at every level, which brings students, parents, and teachers together to form a collaborative

relationship. Activities included parents receiving Title I information and the opportunity to visit their child’s classrooms.

Every day, our students help write our history as we help form their futures. As the new school year progresses, Jordan remains focused on the future by encouraging students to be Present, Prepared, and Professional. For parents, students, and the community, our faculty and staff are helping us raise the bar here at Jordan!

A Man’s Guide to Hormone Replacement Therapy

As men age, it’s common to experience changes that can affect daily life. Reduced energy, diminished muscle mass, and shifts in mood are often accepted as just part of growing older. However, these symptoms could be linked to declining testosterone levels. At Prestige Family Medicine, we specialize in helping men regain their strength and vitality through safe and effective hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using bioidentical hormones.

Understanding the Role of Testosterone

Testosterone is crucial for maintaining several aspects of men’s health. It influences muscle strength, bone density, mental clarity, and sexual health. As testosterone levels decrease with age, men might notice symptoms that interfere with their quality of life, such as reduced energy, lower libido, mood fluctuations, and cognitive fog. These changes can impact your confidence, work performance, and personal relationships.

Are You a Candidate for Hormone Replacement Therapy?

To determine if hormone replacement therapy might be right for you, ask yourself the following questions:

Do you often feel fatigued, even after a full night’s sleep?

Have you noticed a decrease in your muscle mass or strength, despite regular exercise?

Are you experiencing a diminished sex drive or erectile dysfunction?

Do you find it harder to focus or experience frequent mental fog?

Have you been feeling irritable, anxious, or depressed without a clear reason?

Are you gaining weight, particularly around the midsection, despite maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it could be a sign that your testosterone levels are lower than they should be. Hormone replacement therapy with bioidentical hormones may help address these issues by restoring your testosterone levels to a healthy range.

The Advantages of Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy can significantly enhance your quality of life. By restoring your testosterone levels, you can experience:

Increased energy and stamina

Enhanced mental focus and clarity

Improved muscle mass and strength

A revitalized sex drive and better sexual performance

A more stable mood and reduced anxiety or depression

Better overall physical and emotional well-being

At Prestige Family Medicine, we offer a one-stop solution for your hormone health. Our board-certified physician, Dr. Shikha Shah, MD, is an expert in men’s health and employs the latest, most effective methods in hormone replacement therapy, includ-

ing pellet insertion and personalized prescriptions. This ensures that your treatment is tailored to your unique needs and closely monitored by a qualified medical professional.

Our comprehensive, on-site services mean you can have all your needs met in one place, making us the ideal choice for your hormone health. We also do all our labs on site so you don’t have to go multiple places to accomplish your medical needs.

Oh, What A Night! Jersey Boys Opens 2024-25 Season at the Springer

Story of Iconic Legends to Blend Sharp Suits and Smooth Harmonies in Broadway

Columbus, Ga. – The Springer Theatre kicks off its new season with one of Broadway’s hottest hits: the Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys. This high-energy production takes audiences on a journey through the true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the iconic group that rocked the 1960s with hits like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Walk Like a Man.” The curtain rises on the Woodruff Hall Mainstage on Thursday, September 19, at 7:30 PM.

The season opener at the Springer is more than a jukebox musical. The story transports audiences back to an era of sharp, stylish suits and smooth street-corner harmonies. Jersey Boys is a captivating, behind-thescenes look at the trials and triumphs of four blue-collar “fellas”—Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi—who became one of the biggest musical acts of all time. The unique storytelling method, with each member of the group narrating a different “season” of their career, provides a fresh and intriguing perspective on their journey.

The Springer’s production promises to be an entertaining event, with classic retro costumes that perfectly capture the mid-century modern style of the 1960s. The men will wear sleek, tailored suits with skinny ties, while the women will sparkle in period-appropriate dresses that embody the sophisticated fashion of the era. The show’s visual appeal is matched only by its powerful score, which is sure to have audiences tapping their feet and singing along.

Artistic Director Keith McCoy is thrilled to bring this story to life on the Springer stage. “This show is more than just a trip down memory lane,” says McCoy. “It’s a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. The music is timeless, but what really resonates is the story of these four men who, despite all the odds, made their mark on history.”

As the season opener, Jersey Boys sets the bar high for what promises to be an unforgettable year of performances at the Springer Theatre. “We’re starting the season with a production that will really excite our audience,” adds McCoy. “The cast has a chemistry that brings an incredible energy to this show that’s just impossible to resist. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the Four Seasons or just discovering their music for the first time, this production will inspire and entertain you.”

In addition to the on-stage performance, the Springer’s Live at Lunch series returns with Jersey Boys and is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a free preview of the show on Friday, August 20, at noon in the Players Saloon. Live at Lunch features cast performances, interviews with the production crew, and insight from the director. It’s a chance to get a sneak peek into the world of Jersey Boys and experience the magic behind the scenes before the official opening night.

Tickets for Jersey Boys are on sale now, starting at $28. Call, click, or come in to reserve seats. The box office can be reached by phone at (706) 327-3688, in person at 103 10th Street, Columbus, Georgia, 31901, or online at www. springeroperahouse.org.

Staying Strong This Season: Tips for Avoiding Colds

Cold season creeps up on us as the days grow shorter and the weather colder. While some people find comfort in cozy sweaters and warm drinks, nobody likes to deal with the sniffles and sore throats that can frequently occur during this season. Fortunately, there are ways to keep those seasonal bugs at bay and maintain your health as the temperatures drop.

As has been said, the basis of health is laid in self-care. Your body thrives on good nutrition, so be sure to have a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Vitamins and minerals in such foods boost the immune system so that it will have the power to ward off any germs that might come your way. Hydration is quite important because water flushes toxins out of the body and ensures smooth body functioning.

Another secret to staying free of colds is resting. A well-rested body will have a greater ability to fight off illnesses, so

do not skimp on sleep. Be sure to have a relaxing bedtime routine, since the habit will let your body know it’s time to rest. Even though it might be hard to resist those late nights, your health is worth it.

Exercise also forms an important part of maintaining health. Regular physical activity boosts the immune system, improves circulation, and reduces stress— factors supporting the body in fighting against colds. This could be in the form of a brisk walk, yoga, or hitting the gym for an intense workout.

Finally, do not forget your surroundings: regular hand washing and even such simple steps as staying away from a sick person are very effective ways of germs not being able to approach you. And most important of all: take time for you, de-stress, and stay positive. It will be possible to stay healthy by making small, continual efforts and enjoy all the best that the season has to offer without the annoyance of a pesky cold.

LifeSouth Seeks Sickle Cell Heroes for National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

About LifeSouth:

LifeSouth is a non-profit community blood bank serving more than 150 hospitals in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. LifeSouth is committed to meeting the blood supply needs of hospitals and their patients by providing the highest quality blood components and services. The LifeSouth team is dedicated to making sure the blood is there when a patient is in need. To learn more, visit LifeSouth.org. For more resources and information about blood donation, visit donatingblood.org.

“ You have to take care of the pain. It’s like a wild fire. It spreads.

“Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects the body’s red blood cells. Healthy people have disc-shaped red blood cells, but people who have sickle cell disease have red blood cells that tend to change to a crescent shape. These thin sickleshaped cells have difficulty passing through tiny blood vessels. Many sickle cell patients receive frequent blood transfusions. Multiple transfusions can cause complications. To reduce complications, finding donors whose blood types more precisely match these patients is crucial. Since matches are more likely to be found within a patient’s own ethnic group, African-American donors may be the best hope for patients with sickle cell disease. Diversity is the key to successfully matching blood donors to the patients who need them.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is seeking Sickle Cell Heroes to support local sickle cell disease (SCD) patients.

SCD is a genetic blood disorder named for the thin, crescent-shaped red blood cells that struggle to pass through blood vessels compared to healthy, disc-shaped red blood cells. Patients with SCD may experience symptoms such as chronic fatigue, recurrent episodes of extreme pain, breathlessness, and an increased risk of complications such as stroke, liver disease, and delayed growth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, SCD affects approximately 100,000 Americans. It is present in an estimated one in every 365 Black or African-American children born in the United States, and one out of 16,300 Hispanic-American children. LifeSouth’s 365 Movement focuses on raising awareness for the need for Black or African-American donors, and other donors with rare blood types, to help patients who need specially matched blood for transfusions 365 days a year.

“A safe and stable blood supply is essential to ensure patients living with chronic illnesses like sickle cell disease receive the best care,” said Sharon Carpenter, District Director of LifeSouth Community Blood Centers. “The need for Sickle Cell Heroes is great. All eligible donors are encouraged to visit a LifeSouth donor center to learn more about our 365 Movement.”

People living with SCD often need blood transfusions to increase the amount of healthy red blood cells in their bloodstream and lessen the effects of the sickle-shaped cells. LifeSouth works with hospitals to match SCD patients with Sickle Cell Heroes: donors whose red blood cells are precisely matched to reduce complications from blood transfusions. The best matches are likely to be found within a patient’s own ethnic group.

Support Sickle Cell Awareness Month in these ways:

Join the 365 Movement by scheduling regular blood drives to help individuals who could be a potential match for an SCD patient.

Visit a LifeSouth donor center or blood drive to donate blood. LifeSouth will test each donation to identify potential Sickle Cell Heroes.

Donate as often as you can if your identified blood antigen profile is a match. If you are identified as a Sickle Cell Hero, your donations will help a local patient living with SCD.

To learn more, visit LifeSouth.org/SickleCell. Donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health. A photo ID is also required. LifeSouth’s donor center in Columbus is located at 5550 Whittlesey Blvd. and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For additional information, including upcoming blood drives, call LifeSouth toll-free at 888-795-2707 or visit LifeSouth.org.

Sickle Cell Patient

“ He’ ll g o f ro m ze r o t o 10 0 in a ma tte r o f m inu tes.

Elijah Cook has sickle cell anemia, meaning instead of his blood cells being the normal, round shape, his are shaped like a crescent moon. So instead of his blood cells flowing through normally, they tend to get stuck in the small blood vessels, causing a lack of oxygen to various parts of Elijah’s body. This is called a sickle cell crisis and results in pain lasting anywhere from several hours to several weeks.

Elijah’s mom, Shareika, said he’s been in the hospital more than 20 times, and he’s only 5-years-old. The first time Elijah was admitted, he was 3-months-old and experiencing a sickle cell crisis. His hand swelled up to three times its normal size, and he was screaming in pain. His most recent visit to the hospital was from splenic sequestration, which is when a lot of sickled red blood cells become trapped in the spleen, causing it to enlarge and not work as it should. Elijah required multiple emergency blood transfusions to remove all the blood from his spleen.

Shareika explained that prior to transfusions, Elijah has no energy and appears weak, pale and fragile until after the transfusion is complete. “Once you get it, it’s life-changing.”

“When Eli receives his blood transfusions, he’ll go from zero to 100 in a matter of minutes,” Shareika said. “It’s a huge

Shareika was not a blood donor before Elijah was diagnosed with sickle cell, because she didn’t realize the importance of donating blood. Now, she is an avid blood donor and encourages everyone she knows to donate. She’s even organized two successful blood drives in Elijah’s honor.

“There are so many people, so many kids, who need blood to have a normal life, just so they can feel normal so they can enjoy their lives,” Shareika said.

Elijah’s grandfather, Kim Moten, has been a blood donor all his life. “One day you may need someone to give blood for you,” Kim said. “Remember, someone else was afraid one day, but when they saw you in a crisis, they gave. Now someone else is in a crisis. Give for them. Don’t be afraid.”

Kim attends the blood drives organized for Elijah and encourages people to “Just save a life.” “Remember, one day you may need that help, and that help will come for you,” he said. “So don’t be afraid. Give blood. It is the source of life.”

Women in Entrepreneurship Melissa Guthrie

I don’t know about you, but when I think of entrepreneurship, I think of getting down and dirty—in the trenches, so to speak. In a world where grit and determination often pave the way to success, Melissa Guthrie stands as a shining example of what it means to be in the trenches but still find a way to forge her own path. After years of being a stay-at-home mom, she decided to take a leap of faith and start her own house cleaning business. Fueled by her passion for making spaces shine and her desire for independence, Melissa turned her dream into a thriving enterprise, A Southern Clean. Her story is not just about cleaning houses; it’s about sweeping away doubts, building something truly her own, and taking other stay-at-home moms along with her.

Coming from humble beginnings, Melissa was born and raised in Columbus. She had two amazing parents who were always providing, loving, and doing life, but it seemed they always had to work two jobs. Seeing their example, Melissa dreamed about her own life and wanted more than what she had. That alone gave her the drive at an early age to succeed. Graduating from Jordan High School with a college prep plus degree, Melissa was accepted to Mercer University with plans to pursue law. However, with the lack of resources and seeing her parents already working so hard, Melissa ended up staying in Columbus, working two jobs, and attending Columbus Technical College. “I was never fully fulfilled in life with my career. Deep down, I wanted more and felt like my story was not finished in that department. I embraced being a stay-at-home mom for several years,” she shared—until she decided to take that leap of faith.

“After working in the corporate world, I found myself at home with four children and looking to make a little side money so that I didn’t have to ask my hubby for ‘nail money’ or ‘lunch with the girls’ money. I happened to be sitting at my mother’s house one day when she had a cleaning service over. After they left, I asked my mother about all the things that were left undone and why the girls didn’t clean those areas or items. She told me they would charge extra and that those were considered add-ons. This TOTALLY blew my mind—that she was paying for a ‘cleaning,’ but they didn’t wipe the coffee off the front of the kitchen cabinet or dust her blinds.”

Having this epiphany while talking with her mom, Melissa realized this might be something the community needed. “Right then and there, it hit me that there was a market for cleaning—true cleaning! That good, southern cleaning, every time!”lean on for support or call if you have a problem.”

When I asked her about her “Why,” the answer was so clear: “That became my ‘why’—to provide exceptional cleaning without charging for all the extras.” And that became her motto. Melissa also noticed something else: “I realized there were so many women out there who felt the same way as me. Women who had been at home for ten years with children and now had a hard time finding a job that would pay well. I also found women who wanted to be able to take their children to school and pick them up, still cook dinner, and take them to the baseball field at night, but also wanted their ‘own’ money.” Seeing this need, Melissa devised a plan: “This is when I decided to reach out to other stay-at-home mothers and Army wives near me and form this boss babe team!”

When talking about what she would say to the younger version of herself, her response was priceless: “Keep pushing! Don’t let the bad days define you, and don’t let the good days pass without giving thanks.” Isn’t that a simple reminder for all of us?

Being a mom, a wife, and an entrepreneur, how does she stay motivated? “I stay motivated by getting eight hours of sleep every night, working out every morning, getting proper nutrients, and staying hydrated. Keeping your body healthy keeps your mind healthy. I also keep a list of the tasks I need to complete each day and week.” I could seriously learn something from that statement. As an entrepreneur myself, I can vouch for every word. When talking with other women entrepreneurs who may be struggling and reaching out for her words of wisdom, what would she say? “This too shall pass. Truly! My mama always told me to pray about the problem, eat, and take a nap. You will feel better about whatever the problem is afterward.” This next part is so crucial for me: “Also, surround yourself with other boss babes that you can lean on for support or call if you have a problem.”

Melissa puts it simply: “If it was easy, everyone would do it!” As Melissa continues to grow her business, she serves as an inspiration to women everywhere, proving that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. Her journey reminds us all that the road to success is not without challenges, but each step forward is a testament to resilience and courage. To every woman out there daring to chase her dreams and build something of her own—keep shining. I believe in you.

So, my fellow women entrepreneurs, remember: Starting a business is a lot like cleaning a house—both require vision, hard work, and the willingness to tackle every mess head-on. In the end, it’s the attention to detail and the commitment to leaving things better than you found them that sets you apart as an entrepreneur. I believe in you!

Support Paws Humane Society Through Dining for Charities

This fall, Dining for Charities is proud to partner with Paws Humane Society as our featured charity. Paws Humane Society, a private 501(c)3 nonprofit, is dedicated to keeping pets out of the shelter system and in loving homes. Serving over 17,000 animals annually, Paws Humane offers a range of services, including adoptions, affordable veterinary care, and community outreach programs that work tirelessly to improve the lives of companion animals.

Through their adoption center and veterinary clinics, Paws Humane provides essential care and rehoming services for dogs, cats, and small animals in the Columbus area. Their innovative programs, such as the Community Cat Program, Pets for Life, and Spay it Forward, are key initiatives aimed at reducing the number of homeless pets and supporting pet owners in need. By fostering these animals or volunteering your time, you can be part of their mission to find loving homes for all pets.

As part of this partnership, a portion of the proceeds from select dining establishments will be donated to Paws Humane. This is an excellent opportunity for our community to come together, enjoy a good meal, and contribute to a worthy cause. Every meal purchased through Dining for Charities helps Paws Humane con-

tinue their lifesaving work, providing critical services that benefit both animals and the people who love them.

Whether you’re interested in adopting a new furry friend, volunteering, or simply enjoying a meal that gives back, we encourage everyone to get involved and support Paws Humane Society. Together, we can help Paws Humane Society realize its vision of becoming a no-kill community where every pet finds a loving home.

Visit Paws Humane Society at 4900 Milgen Rd, Columbus, GA, or call them at 706-565-0035 for more information on how you can help or scan the QR code below to give back while you’re eating out. Let’s make a difference—one meal, one pet, one community at a time.

Aaron “SgtQ” Quinonez to Speak at Chattahoochee Valley Military Golf Classic

The Chattahoochee Valley Military Golf Classic is proud to announce that this year’s event, taking place on October 28 at Green Island Hill Golf Course, will feature Aaron “SgtQ” Quinonez as our distinguished guest speaker. This annual tournament, deeply rooted in the tradition of honoring and supporting our military community, benefits Army Emergency Relief, an organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to soldiers and their families in times of need.

Aaron Quinonez, known widely as SgtQ, is a former Marine Corps special forces operator whose remarkable journey from the depths of homelessness to the heights of entrepreneurial success is nothing short of inspirational. After his service in the Marine Corps, SgtQ faced the harsh realities of life, including the struggles of mental health and homelessness. However, it was through these trials that he discovered his true calling: to become a beacon of hope and change for those grappling with similar challenges. His story of transformation from hardship to becoming a multimillionaire and a leader in mental health advocacy is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and faith.

SgtQ’s most notable achievement is the creation of the QActual app, a groundbreaking tool that has significantly reduced suicide-related emergency room visits, saving countless lives. This life-saving innovation has earned him the prestigious Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the betterment of society. Beyond his technological innovations, SgtQ serves as a chaplain for the Seattle Seahawks, where he provides spiritual and emotional support to the team, helping them navigate the pressures of professional sports with mental fortitude.

As a motivational speaker, SgtQ has captivated audiences across the nation, using his powerful narrative to inspire leaders to prioritize mental health within their teams. His mission is not just to motivate but to educate—he aims to empower one million leaders to reach 100 million people with the tools and knowledge to heal from trauma and become high performers by 2038.

During his appearance at the Chattahoochee Valley Military Golf Classic, SgtQ will deliver a compelling talk on the importance of building mentally resilient and high-performing teams. Drawing from his own experiences and the principles behind the QActual app, he will introduce attendees to the concept of mental health “camps.” SgtQ will guide teams through the process of identifying which mental health “camp” they currently reside in and provide them with the tools and insights needed to move toward “Camp Hope.” This journey of self-awareness and collective growth is crucial for developing trust, improving communication, and nurturing a service-oriented culture that supports resilience and drives performance. His talk will equip attendees with actionable steps to engage in meaningful conversations with their team members, foster a positive service culture, and implement cost-effective processes for enhancing both team well-being and business outcomes.

The Chattahoochee Valley Military Golf Classic promises to be more than just a day of golf; it will be a day of inspiration, learning, and community. Participants will not only have the chance to enjoy a round of golf on a beautiful course but also to gain invaluable insights from one of the most impactful voices in mental health and leadership today.

We encourage all interested participants to register their teams early and secure their spot at this important event. Additionally, there are opportunities for businesses and individuals to become sponsors, contributing to the success of the tournament and supporting Army Emergency Relief’s vital mission. To register your team or to learn more about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Mark Kirkland at mark. kirkland@wltz.com. Your participation and support will make a significant difference in the lives of soldiers and their families, while also allowing you to be part of a day filled with camaraderie, competition, and inspiration.

Join us on October 28 for the Chattahoochee Valley Military Golf Classic—a day where we honor our military heroes, come together as a community, and learn from the remarkable journey of Aaron “SgtQ” Quinonez. Let’s make this year’s event the most impactful one yet!
