Autism Awareness in Action: Jordan High Brings the Community Together
On Friday, April 18, 2025, the track at Jordan Vocational High School College and Career Academy became a hub of joy, community spirit, and, most importantly: understanding. The school proudly hosted an Autism Awareness Event that brought together students, families, and local partners in a celebration of inclusion and support. The event not only showcased the school’s deep commitment to fostering a welcoming environment, but also highlighted the power of collaboration throughout the community.
The event was a vibrant gathering involving students from Hannan Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Eagle Ridge Elementary, and Double Churches Middle School. These students, along with their families and the volunteers from Jordan, participated in a variety of activities ranging from fun games to opportunities to interact with public safety professionals, all aimed at raising awareness and promoting understanding of autism.
It was a day full of excitement and connection, but it also held a deeper meaning for everyone involved.
At the heart of the event was a shared goal: to raise awareness of autism while creating a space for individuals with autism and their families to come together, feel supported, and celebrate the uniqueness of each individual. The collaboration between Jordan, other local schools, and public safety partners was a testament to the
community’s commitment to making Columbus a welcoming place for all.
The day’s festivities included various games hosted by Jordan students, each designed to foster fun, teamwork, and an environment of acceptance. There were bean bag tosses, face painting booths, and even sweet treats served by Jordan’s Culinary Arts students. For many of these students, it was an opportunity to contribute to their community and show their younger peers the value of inclusion, kindness, and understanding.
Local public safety partners were also an integral part of the event. Officers from the Columbus Police Department, fire fighters from the Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services, and other community partners joined in the festivities. It was a wonderful chance for the students to connect with the first responders in a friendly, approachable setting.
Jordan is proud to be home to the only self-contained autism wing at a Muscogee County School District (MCSD) high school. The dedicated educators who work in this wing serve as a beacon of light and hope—not only to their students—but to the entire Jordan body as a whole. In fact, the leader teacher in that wing— Mr. Repass—was recently awarded the honor of being one of three finalists for the prestigious MCSD Teacher of the Year Award. Mr. Repass and his team are integral in not only providing quality education to the students in the Wing (as
it is called at Jordan), but to all Jordan students through exposure and opportunity.
As the day went on, it became clear that the Autism Awareness Event was more than just a gathering: it was a moment for the community to come together and show its support for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. It was about fostering a culture of understanding where every person, regardless of their abilities, is celebrated for who they are. The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion and celebrating what makes each of us unique.
It was clear by the end of the day that the true success of the day was not measured by the number of games played, the number of frozen treats served, or the number of students who attended. Success was found in the smiles, laughter, and connection between everyone involved. It was measured by the understanding and support that filled the campus grounds.
The Autism Awareness Event at Jordan Vocational High School College and Career Academy was more than just a good time for all. The event was a meaningful step forward in ensuring that every individual feels seen, supported, and celebrated. And it was a reminder that, in a world where differences often separate us, it is through compassion, understanding, and inclusion that we find our greatest joy.
Helping Kids Heal: Camp Hope Returns This June
Grief is hard at any age—but for children, it can feel especially overwhelming. They may not have the words to explain what they’re feeling or even realize that what they’re experiencing is grief. That’s why Camp Hope, hosted by Columbus Hospice, is such a vital resource for our community.
Camp Hope is a free, one-day camp created specifically for children ages 6 to 15 who have lost a loved one in the past year. Through a mix of structured activities, emotional support, and good old-fashioned fun, the camp helps kids navigate the complex emotions that come with loss— without making them feel like they have to “move on” or pretend they’re okay.
Kids spend the day laughing with new friends who understand what they’re going through. In between, trained counselors offer grief education and coping strategies in a safe, judgment-free environment. It’s about connection, healing, and reminding each child that they are not alone.
“One of the most powerful parts of Camp Hope is seeing children realize
they’re not the only ones feeling this way,” says the camp’s coordinator. “There’s comfort in that. We let them know it’s okay to feel all the things— sadness, anger, confusion—and we show them ways to handle those feelings in healthy, lasting ways.”
Camp Hope 2025 will take place on June 27, and space is limited. Interested parents or guardians should contact Columbus Hospice soon to begin the sign-up process. Each child will have a pre-camp meeting with the bereavement team to ensure they’re ready and comfortable.
To learn more or register your child, visit columbushospice.com or contact the bereavement department directly. The team is available to answer questions, provide guidance, and support families through the process.
Grief may be part of life—but no child should have to face it alone. Camp Hope offers a day of connection, care, and healing that can make all the difference.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:
THE MALLARD INSURANCE GROUP
I love conducting our Business Spotlight interview every month. This month, I sat down with Josh Whitehead of the Mallard Insurance Group. Josh’s passion for teaching and serving his customers was so refreshing, we invited him to contribute a monthly column to help us better understand the complexities of insurance. You’ll find his first article in this edition on page ______.
Bill: First off, congratulations on the new company, Mallard Insurance Group. For the past 11 years, you’ve been a very successful, top-performing Allstate Insurance Agency. Why the change?
Josh: Forming Mallard Insurance Group has given me access to a broader range of products. As a captive agent, I could only offer one company’s policies. That didn’t sit well with me. My heart is in educating clients and giving them both a voice and a choice. Now, as an independent agent, I can offer products from multiple carriers, providing more options and competitive pricing.
Bill: Having access to multiple insurance companies definitely seems like a big advantage. What does that mean for your customers? Josh: The advantage now belongs to my clients. With multiple carriers, I can retain families who have
grown with my agency. As rates fluctuate, I go to work to find coverage at the most competitive price without compromising protection. That means higher satisfaction and better long-term relationships.
Bill: I believe you’re the only RAMSEY TRUSTED PRO for insurance in the entire Chattahoochee Valley. That’s a big deal. What was the vetting process like?
Josh: Dave Ramsey has changed my life. I’ve followed his teachings for the last five years, and they led me to financial freedom. Becoming a Ramsey Trusted Pro wasn’t easy—it was a rigorous process because they take their values seriously. Being chosen gives us instant credibility, and I’m proud to display that shield.
Bill: Another change is your ability to now help businesses with commercial insurance. What does that mean for your business clients?
Josh: As a business owner and the child of two small business owners in Columbus, I have a unique perspective. You could say I’ve been preparing for this my whole life. I understand the demands of running a business, and I want to be the personal insurance department that business owners can rely on. My team is in the background making sure your coverage is right—year after year.
Bill: Your logo features the Mallard duck. You’re a lifelong Columbus resident, an avid hunter and golfer, and a former college baseball player. I’ve seen firsthand your passion for your family and this community. What does it mean to you to serve this area?
Josh: Columbus and the surrounding areas are full of great people. The best part of my job is making a real impact in their lives. I believe in “people helping people.” When locals support local businesses, it strengthens our entire community.
Bill: This is an exciting new chapter for you and your team. What’s the easiest way for people to connect with you, and what’s your biggest piece of advice for our readers?
Josh: Call me old school, but I love a good conversation. You can reach us at 706-780-6009. If you prefer online, visit mallardinsurancegroup.com. My biggest advice? I know insurance can be a love/ hate relationship. It’s frustrating when rates rise even if you haven’t filed a claim, but it’s a lifesaver when tragedy strikes. At Mallard Insurance Group, we find the balance. We offer diverse carriers so you can stay protected without overpaying. I’d love to meet you.
CERRONE’S PIZZERIA CAPTURES WORLD PIZZA CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
Leo DiCesaris, owner and head pizzaiolo at Cerrone’s Brick Oven Pizzeria, brought home a world title in March that has the entire Columbus community buzzing with pride. Competing in the prestigious World Pizza Championship during the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas on March 26–27, DiCesaris was crowned Best Pizza Maker in the World.
A familiar face at this annual global event, DiCesaris has been fine-tuning his craft at Cerrone’s for the past decade. This year, his artistry and innovation in pizza-making earned him not only the international title, but also solidified Cerrone’s reputation as “Best in the Southeast”—an honor the pizzeria has now claimed twice.
The competition was fierce and fair, featuring blind judging by a panel of elite culinary experts. Each contestant had 30 minutes to craft their pizza

masterpiece—on dough that had been prepared five days in advance using a natural fermentation process involving yeast extracted from grapes and apples.
So, what set Leo’s pizza apart from the rest? “The dough was very fruitful,” DiCesaris explained. “I used imported Italian flours, hickory and cherry smoked mozzarella, and a very special pig from Spain to hand-carve chorizo.” He topped it all with pistachioencrusted pears, a delicate wine glaze, and layers of Spanish cheese.
Was that everything?
With a smile typical of a seasoned champion, Leo added, “There was probably a little more.” But when asked what that “more” might be, he simply winked— and kept the secret ingredient under wraps.
The team at Chattahoochee Valley Living and
Dining for Charities extends heartfelt congratulations to Leo DiCesaris on this monumental achievement. Ever humble, Leo gives full credit to his faith: “The glory goes to God for blessing me with this gift.”
Beyond his culinary accolades, Leo and Cerrone’s remain deeply rooted in the Columbus community. Cerrone’s proudly participates in the Dining for Charities program, where each purchase helps support local nonprofits. Springer Opera House Awarded Prestigious National Grant for Historic Preservation
Jhai jameson
The Springer Opera House, the historic State Theatre of Georgia, announces the award of a prestigious grant from the Historic Preservation Fund allocation within the National Parks Service. This funding, secured in partnership with U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, will support the continued preservation and enhancement of the historic Springer Opera House, one of the oldest and most celebrated theatres in the United States.
The Historic Preservation Fund, a vital resource for protecting the nation’s heritage, allocates grants for projects that safeguard and revitalize historic structures and sites. Congress directed a portion of the funding to support projects like the Springer Opera House’s restoration efforts, recognizing the importance of preserving America’s cultural and architectural history. Senator Ossoff, who has advocated for the arts, economic development, and historic preservation in Georgia, played a pivotal role in securing this funding.
“Built in 1871, the Springer Opera House is one of Georgia’s most cherished historical landmarks. Bringing Republicans and Democrats together, I’m honored to help support local efforts to repair its roof and ventilation systems to preserve this community landmark for generations to come.” Sen. Ossoff said. “I thank Springer Opera House CEO and Executive Producer Danielle Patterson-Varner for bringing this proposal to my office and for her leadership in the community.”
CEO / Executive Producer Danielle PattersonVarner worked closely with Senator Ossoff and staff to secure the funding through the Historic Preservation Fund and expressed gratitude for the partnership.
“As a producing theatre and nonprofit entity housed within the majesty of a 154-year-old National Historic Landmark, we are constantly challenged to find the means to maintain its physical integrity. Due to the dedication and efforts of Senator Ossoff and his team, this crucial funding provides the fiscal power to restore this beautiful yet fragile theatre and ensure the Springer’s future for many generations. This grant helps to support the foundation on which we proudly serve our community and our great State of Georgia.”
“The Forever Springer Project” began as a vision from former Producing Artistic Director Paul Pierce and the Board of Directors seven years ago to invest $8 million in historic preservation over 10 years. After leading the Springer for 35 years, Pierce aimed to leave the building in impeccable condition before his
retirement in 2023. From HVAC system upgrades to addressing more urgent preservation needs, this project marks the Springer’s first major restoration in 25 years. Now led by Varner, the Springer has successfully concluded its fundraising efforts to secure long-term preservation funding. Pierce continues to play an integral advisory role in maintaining the building’s historical integrity.
Under Varner’s leadership, the staff has turned Pierce’s vision into reality, securing financial support from individuals, private foundations, and government programs like the Historic Preservation Fund. The funding will be directed towards crucial restoration projects, including the preservation of the opera house’s façade, the restoration of significant interior features, and updates to meet modern accessibility standards. These enhancements will preserve the building’s historic beauty and ensure its continued role as a vibrant cultural and performance hub for generations to come.
About the Historic Preservation Fund
The Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) is a key federal program that provides financial support for the
preservation of historic and cultural sites across the United States. Funded by Congress, the HPF offers grants to state and tribal preservation offices, as well as to local governments and nonprofit organizations, helping to preserve significant historic places, enhance communities, and promote heritage tourism. The HPF aims to safeguard the nation’s architectural, historical, and cultural resources while fostering economic growth, tourism, and job creation through preservation projects.
Founded in 1871, the Springer Opera House is Georgia’s State Theatre and one of the nation’s most historically significant and active theatres. Located in downtown Columbus, the Springer Opera House is a beacon of arts and culture, hosting many performances, including Broadway-style shows, concerts, and community events. The Springer is dedicated to preserving its historic legacy while offering diverse cultural programming that connects with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
About Springer Opera House
Tawanna Jamison was nominated for Pet Peace of Mind Volunteer of the Year by Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama. Tawanna is an amazing asset to the Pet Peace of Mind program and is a huge advocate for animals. The following story is just one example of Tawanna taking a dog into her home for an extended period of time until the patient or caregiver was able to take care of them again.
Columbus Hospice Volunteer Nominated for Award for Service
Columbus Hospice Volunteer Services received a call from a patient’s neighbor. She was looking after the patient’s dog, Pooch, while the patient was in their inpatient Hospice House the patient’s wife/ primary caregiver was going through a health crisis of her own and would be hospitalized for an indefinite period of time.
A Columbus Hospice staff member met the neighbor at the patient’s home and retrieved the dog, who was elderly and blind, but also gentle, friendly, and curious!
Pooch’s human dad had passed away in the
Hospice House, and his human mom was still hospitalized. Columbus Hospice staff remained in contact with the patient’s wife to offer support, and to assure her that Pooch was safe and cared for, awaiting a reunion with her when she was able to leave the hospital.
Tawanna offered to pick Pooch up and foster him in her home. Tawanna began to take Pooch to visit his mom. She cried, saying over and over, “God bless you. God bless you. Pooch is all I have left.”
Pooch received all the care he needed and continues to receive love and care every day. And, while Pooch’s mom is going through one the most difficult seasons of her life, she is still able to have her loyal companion of 14 years in her life, thanks to a selfless volunteer who simply said, “I just want to be a blessing.”
Thank you, Tawanna, for your heartfelt compassion. We appreciate all you do for patients and their furry family members!
The Gospel Defined
The word gospel means “good news.” Definitions are great, but only if we know how to use the words. So, if the Gospel is “good news,” we should ask the next logical question: Good news about what?
In the context of the Christian faith, the Gospel is the good news that what separated us from God has been fixed. That the reasons we may feel distant from God, and even from ourselves, has been resolved. The Gospel is the message that
Pastor Victor R. Scott
tells us those feelings of isolation and loneliness that sneak up on us don’t have to stay. We now have access to someone who knows us and even understands our circumstances.
The Gospel is good news even if we don’t accept it. It’s just not our good news. But when we realize how great our need for healing is, the Gospel becomes the best news in the world. Because it then becomes our news too!

Add This Superfruit to Your Menu for Heart-Healthy Meals
It’s no secret that adding greens to your menu
– morning, noon and night – can go a long way toward healthier eating habits. While most people think of lettuce, kale, spinach, cucumbers and Brussels sprouts, don’t forget avocados are a superfruit you can use to add good fats and great taste to recipes throughout the day. As a versatile fruit with naturally good fats and nearly 20 vitamins and minerals, avocados have become a household staple. Avocados From Mexico is a national supporter of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good Initiative – Eat Smart Program, encouraging people to incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables and other heart-healthy foods into their meals. By supporting this initiative, Avocados From Mexico is helping to raise awareness about the importance of making smart nutrition choices. The brand’s “Good Fats Meet Great Taste” campaign, featured at select Kroger locations, highlights the importance of balanced nutrition and fresh food choices as part of an overall heart-healthy lifestyle. Avocados provide a good source of naturally unsaturated fats, which can be part of a hearthealthy eating pattern when consumed in place of saturated fats. A well-balanced diet that includes nutrient-rich foods like avocados, whole grains, lean proteins and fiber-rich vegetables can support overall heart health. You always hear the quote, “Create the life you want!” but life mostly creates us. Ambers story is so close to so many women that I know. I related in so many ways to her struggles and triumphs. I hope her story inspires at least ONE person to create the life they want because if she can do it, so can we!
At 39, Amber Swift found herself where many women quietly land: exhausted, anxious, achy, bloated, and completely drained. Life looked like an endless loop of doing, for others, for her family, for her church, until her body said, “enough.” For 23 years, Amber had poured herself into motherhood, homeschooling five children while also serving wholeheartedly in the small church she and her husband helped plant. She said yes to everything and everyone, until the very body doing the saying finally ran dry.
Her breaking point came not just from stress, but from a well intended detox program she tried with her husband. Instead of relief, it triggered a cascade of setbacks: seven cavities, early onset menopause, and even more stress. “What benefits one person

might exacerbate another’s struggles,” Amber says. “One man’s food is another man’s poison.” It was the perfect storm: chronic stress combined with a health regimen that wasn’t right for her. She describes it as a “1-2-3 punch,” a cumulative crash that forced her to reevaluate everything. Her biggest takeaway? She had to put on her own oxygen mask first. And that’s exactly what she did. That realization became a launching pad. Amber became a Certified Integrative & Functional Nutrition Health Coach, and now leads other women back to health, not through fads or guesswork, but through small, sustainable changes. She focuses on energy restoration, hormone balance, anxiety reduction, and weight loss, all through personalized, faith-driven guidance.
“My why is to help busy women flourish in the life God has gifted them,” she shares. “To embrace each day with vitality and joy.” When asked what she would tell her younger self, her answer comes with the kind of wisdom you can only earn the hard way: “Embrace every aspect of your journey. The highs and the lows, this is where the beautiful growth and wisdom come
from.” Amber’s motivation is grounded in consistency, prayer, and purpose. “I stay motivated by going back to my why and asking the Lord for wisdom and open doors,” she says. “Consistency is where the gold is. Every day, I just try to move the needle a little more.” For fellow women entrepreneurs feeling defeated, Amber has this reminder: “Your mission is as unique and beautiful as you are. You have a story to tell and a people group to reach that no one else can. Keep going. Be flexible. Stay humble and teachable.” Today, through her business *Renewed Health*, Amber helps women heal from the inside out. Her work isn’t just about food or supplements, it’s about giving women permission to prioritize themselves, to heal, and to rise. In her journey from burnout to breakthrough, she’s not just telling a story….she’s changing lives.
So my fellow women entrepreneurs above all else take your health seriously, because you truly deserve to enjoy the life you are creating!

How to SAVE on Insurance
Josh Whitehead
Car insurance protects you financially when you are on the road!
It’s a love/hate relationship. We love it when we have a bad day and a tragedy outside of our control happens but we hate it when all is well and it’s time to pay those high premiums!
According to a study on Dave Ramsey’s website, the average driver in 2022 paid $1588 for car insurance!
There are a lot of reasons outside your control for expensive premiums but you can take these steps to lower your car insurance.
1. Ask what discounts are available.
Car insurance companies will offer discounts such as:
•Working certain jobs like a teacher, nurse or military.
•Good student discounts for good grades
•Defensive Driver course.
•Bundling home and auto
•Low annual miles
These are a few popular discounts I see often but always ask your independent agent what else may be available based on your qualifications!
2. Shop around.
You are not tied down to a 6 month or annual policy. You are the boss, if you are not satisfied, see what else is out there! Theis is where an independent agent, such as Mallard Insurance Group, can bring you value. We have access to multiple trusted carriers that we can shop for you. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
3. Increase your deductible and drop coverage you don’t need.
Beware of unnecessary add-ons that increase your rates but don’t offer
more value than a good liability, collision and comprehensive coverage already provides. An example would be incentive programs that pay you a portion of premium back only if you meet the guidelines every policy period. Most of the time you may be paying an 18% increase only to enjoy a 5% reward. But hey, it made you happy getting that $25 check in the mail, right? Wrong! Pay for what you need and save!
4. Pay your premium in FULL.
I understand we are on a tight budget and coming out of pocket $1500 sounds undoable with all the expenses we have! Quit making excuses, you probably eat out and buy overpriced coffee 5 times a week. Paying your policy in full can save you around 20% if not more! The average auto insurance policy is 6 months. Sacrifice starting today and put 50 to 100 dollars a month away. Build your insurance fund so you can pay your renewal in full and continue to keep that discount!!
It’s time to audit your policy! Get an independent agent that will be on your side and go to work for you. Call Mallard Insurance Group at 706-780-6009, we are excited to be a part of your family!

Gearing Up for Summer Break
A Podiatrist’s Guide to Common Pediatric Foot Concerns
Gearing Up for Summer Break: A Podiatrist’s Guide to Common Pediatric Foot Concerns
As summer break approaches, kids are getting ready to swap textbooks for flip-flops, and classrooms for playgrounds, camps, and outdoor adventures. But before they dive into all the fun, it’s important for parents to take a moment and ensure their children’s feet are healthy, pain-free, and ready for the season ahead.
From my perspective as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, summer is one of the busiest times for pediatric foot concerns. As kids grow more active, previously unnoticed foot issues can flare up quickly. Here are four common conditions I see this time of year, and what parents should know to keep their kids on the move.
1. Sever’s Disease: When Heel Pain Isn’t Just “Growing Pains”
One of the most common causes of heel pain in active children aged 8–14, especially those involved in sports, is Sever’s disease. This isn’t a disease in the traditional sense, but an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel caused by repetitive stress and impact—often made worse by cleats or unsupportive shoes.
What to watch for:
• Complaints of heel pain after activity
• Limping or walking on toes to avoid heel pressure
• Swelling or tenderness at the back of the heel
What you can do:
Supportive footwear, custom orthotics, stretching, and rest can help manage symptoms. If heel pain persists, see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your child’s activity level.
2. Ingrown Toenails: Small Problem, Big Pain
Summertime means bare feet and sandals—but also a higher risk for ingrown toenails. These occur when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to redness, swelling, and even infection.
What to watch for:
• Red, swollen skin along the edge of the nail
• Pain when wearing shoes or applying pressure
• Drainage or signs of infection
What you can do:
Avoid aggressive nail trimming or digging at the nail. Never “home surgery” an ingrown toenail—this often worsens the problem. A podiatrist can remove the painful portion safely, sometimes permanently, with a simple in-office procedure.
3. “Growing Pains” – Or Is It Something More?
Many kids complain of “growing pains,” especially in the feet, ankles, or legs. While some discomfort is normal during growth spurts, persistent or localized pain may indicate something more, like tight muscles, flat feet, or biomechani-
cal imbalances.
What to watch for:
• Complaints of aching feet or legs, especially at night or after activity
• Flat feet or awkward gait
• Reluctance to participate in physical activity
What you can do:
Don’t dismiss pain as “just growing pains” if it’s frequent or affects your child’s quality of life. A foot evaluation can identify underlying issues, and early intervention can prevent chronic problems later on.
4. Flat Feet: Building a Strong Foundation
Flexible flat feet are common in younger children and often improve as they grow. However, in some cases, flat feet can cause pain, fatigue, or difficulty keeping up with peers.
What to watch for:
• Lack of arch in the foot when standing
• Frequent tripping or clumsiness
• Complaints of foot, knee, or back pain
What you can do:
Not all flat feet require treatment, but supportive shoes, arch supports, or orthotics can improve comfort and function. A pediatric foot exam can help determine if intervention is necessary.
Final Thoughts: Step Into Summer with Confidence
Foot health is essential to keeping kids active, happy, and ready to enjoy everything summer has to offer. If your child is experiencing any of the issues above—or if you’re just not sure—don’t wait until a small problem becomes a bigger one.
As a podiatrist, I encourage parents to use this season as an opportunity to check in on their children’s foot health. With the right support and care, your child can step confidently into summer—and every adventure that comes with it!

Thinking About Buying a Car with Your Tax Refund?
Here’s How to Make It Count
Tax refund season is here, and for a lot of people, that extra cash feels like a green light to finally make some long-awaited purchases. In fact, this year’s refunds may be among the biggest in recent years, according to a report from Oxford Economics—which means more people might be ready to spend.
One of the top things people put that money toward? A vehicle. Especially a used one. The Oxford report shows that used cars are one of the most common tax refund purchases. With resale values still holding strong, this season is prime time for buyers looking to upgrade or replace their ride.
But before you jump into car shopping, it’s worth taking a beat. A few smart moves now can save you from a lot of regret (and bills) later.
Stick to Your Budget—Seriously
Used cars can be a great deal, especially when you consider that the average price tag is about half that of a new car, according to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive. That said, it’s still easy to get swept up in the excitement and overspend.
“One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is stretching their budget just to get a newer or flashier model,” says Laura D. Adams, a personal finance expert and host of the “Money Girl” podcast. “There’s a sweet spot—vehicles that are lightly used and well-maintained can offer great value without the sticker shock of something brand new.”
Shop with dealers or retailers that list transparent pricing so you know exactly what you’re getting into. A straightforward buying experience helps you stay on track financially—and avoid surprises later.
Down Payments: More Now, Less Later
If you’ve got a decent refund coming your way, putting more down upfront can pay off in the long run. A bigger down payment often means lower monthly payments and less interest over the life of the loan. That can make your budget feel a lot more manageable down the road.
“When setting a car budget, people tend to focus on the monthly payment,” Adams explains. “But putting a little more down at the start can make a noticeable difference over time in both payments and total cost.”
Online auto loan calculators can help you crunch the numbers and see how different down payments impact your loan.
Prioritize Reliability Over Bells and Whistles
Whether you’re buying from a dealership or a private seller, the most important factor is reliability. Do your homework. Read reviews. Check the vehicle history. And always take it for a test drive if you can.
“Maintenance issues can sneak up on you, especially with older vehicles,” Adams says. “Make sure you’re buying from a source you trust. The last thing you want is to end up pouring your refund into repairs.”
Some dealers offer certified used programs that include multi-point inspections, warranties, and return policies—bonus perks that can offer peace of mind.
Bottom Line: Make Your Refund Work for You
A solid used car can be more than just a purchase—it can be a smart investment in your day-to-day life. And with a little prep, your tax refund could be the perfect down payment to get you there.
Just take your time, do your research, and focus on what works for your budget and lifestyle. That’s how you turn a tax refund into something that keeps paying off long after spring has come and gone.
