Donors will receive a limited-edition Breast Cancer Awareness Month long sleeve t-shirt, while supplies last. THE SPRINGER OPERA HOUSE SCORES BIG WITH JERSEY
Written by Bill Evans
I’ve mentioned it several times before: the challenge with writing a review for a monthly publication like Chattahoochee Valley Living is that by the time you read it, it’s often too late to catch the show. CEO Danielle Patterson-Varner and Artistic Director Keith McCoy continue to impress with the performances they’re bringing to this historic Columbus, Georgia theatre.
It’s hard to imagine you don’t already know the story of Jersey Boys, chronicling the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Adam Marino, making his Springer Opera House debut, takes on the role of Frankie Valli. Adam is no stranger to the part, having portrayed Valli seven times before. He’s also a former member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group The Diamonds. With his great voice and range, he’s perfectly suited for this demanding role.
Jersey Boys is more than just Frankie Valli’s story. It’s a tale of friendship, partnerships, and the struggles of climbing the Billboard charts, all while navigating a music scene forever altered by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Jersey Boys were different, and they endured. Just when it seemed like the Four Seasons were finished, Frankie Valli emerged as a successful solo artist.
The songs are timeless, and kudos to the entire cast, which includes Matthew Ruehlman, also making his Springer debut, along with Christian Becerra and Andy Brown, both returning to the Springer stage. Hats off to the production crew as well, who continue to dazzle with each Springer Opera House performance.
Don’t miss out on upcoming shows at the Springer Opera House. Supporting the arts in our community is essential, and there’s always something amazing coming next!

Major Medicare Changes Coming in 2025: What You Need to Know
Written by Mel Thornton, FLMI
Medicare and change go hand in hand, as anyone on Medicare can attest. What sets 2025 apart? Next year will bring the most significant updates to Medicare since 2005. These changes are outlined in a 1,400-plus-page report published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
While the report covers all upcoming modifications, I’ll focus on a few key changes that may directly affect Medicare beneficiaries. The biggest shift will occur in Medicare Part D, which covers prescription drugs.
For the first time, a maximum out-of-pocket limit of $2,000 will be introduced for prescription drug co-pays. Once someone on Medicare reaches $2,000 in prescription costs, they will no longer have to pay co-pays for the rest of the year. Additionally, the infamous “donut hole,” or coverage gap, will be permanently closed in 2025—a huge relief for those on high-cost medications.
Starting next year, beneficiaries on expensive prescriptions will also be able to spread their co-pays over 12 monthly payments. However, those on stand-alone Part D drug plans should expect increased monthly premiums.
For Medicare Advantage enrollees, a midyear notification will remind them of any unused supplemental benefits. Medicare Advantage plans will also need to review the impact of prior authorization policies on at-risk populations. Additionally, there will be improved access to mental health professionals.
Dual eligibles—those who have both Medicare and Medicaid—will lose the ability to switch plans every quarter, starting in 2025.
These are just some of the changes coming in 2025. Medicare beneficiaries should have received their Annual Notice of Change in September. Be sure to review it carefully to understand how your Medicare Advantage or stand-alone Part D plan will be affected.
If you have any questions or need help navigating Medicare changes during the Annual Enrollment Period, contact Mel Thornton, a local Medicare broker licensed in Georgia and Alabama, in partnership with The Miley Agency, a full-service insurance agency in Columbus. Springer Theatre Introduces New Ticket Discount Programs
Initiative Creates Access to Low-income and Underserved Audiences
(Columbus, GA) – The historic Springer Opera House Theatre is launching two new ticket discount programs designed to make theatre more accessible and affordable for everyone in the community. These initiatives, the Gateway Program and the Curtain Call Rush Ticket Program, are part of the Springer’s ongoing commitment to broadening community engagement and ensuring that the magic of live theatre is available to all.
Gateway Program: Expanding Access to Underserved Audiences
Recognizing that financial barriers often prevent community members from enjoying cultural experiences, the Springer has developed programs that welcome and encourage new audiences. The Gateway Program is designed for low-income and underserved audiences. It reflects the belief that theatre should be an inclusive art form, accessible to everyone re-
gardless of economic background. The program provides substantial discounts on tickets to Springer productions, making it easier for individuals and families who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience live theatre. The program will be limited to the first 40 households to enroll in the first year.
Springer Director of Marketing and Audience Development, Allie Kent, began researching potential discount programs before the outbreak of COVID-19. “Our community has one of the highest poverty rates in the state, which prevents people from participating in the arts,” Kent said. “Our goal with this specific program is to create a supportive environment where everyone who desires can enjoy live theatre without impacting their household budget.”
Patrons who meet specific eligibility requirements, as detailed on the theatre’s website, can purchase up to four tickets to see select shows for $7. Patrons must be 18 or older and enrolled in one or more federal assistance programs.
Curtain Call Rush Ticket Program: Affordable Last-Minute Tickets for All
In addition to the Gateway Program, the Springer is introducing the Curtain Call Rush Ticket Program, offering deeply discounted tickets for select performances. This program is essentially a ticket lottery that allows patrons to “win” an opportunity to purchase tickets for select performances at a discounted rate. Tickets through the Curtain Call Program are subject to availability. They will not be offered for Springer special events or as part of subscriber perks.
Springer CEO and Executive Producer Danielle Patterson-Varner anticipates that this program will be successful with younger audiences. “Curtain Call is perfect for those who love the spontaneity of last-minute plans or for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality theatre at an affordable price. We aim to make it easier for more people to enjoy our productions, even on a tight budget.”
“Curtain Call is almost tailor-made for a generation used to doing things on their phones and online,” Kent added. “The
entire process is completely done online except picking up tickets at the box office.”
There is no guarantee that these discounted tickets will be available for every Springer production. Ticket prices are set at $25 for Springer Main Stage productions and $20 for Studio II Series productions. Sign-up for Curtain Call begins Tuesday, September, 17 via the Springer website.
A Commitment to Inclusivity and Community Engagement
The Springer Opera House has a long-standing tradition of enriching the cultural landscape of Columbus and the surrounding region. Introducing these new discount programs is an important step that ensures our theatre remains a place where all community members can experience the joy and inspiration of live performance.
For more information about the Gateway Program and the Curtain Call Rush Ticket Program, including eligibility requirements and how to participate, please visit www.springeroperahouse.org/ticket-discounts or contact the box office at (706) 327-3688.
A Man’s Guide to Hormone Replacement Therapy
Written by Dr. Shikah Shah, MD
As men age, it’s common to experience changes that can affect daily life. Reduced energy, diminished muscle mass, and shifts in mood are often accepted as just part of growing older. However, these symptoms could be linked to declining testosterone levels. At Prestige Family Medicine, we specialize in helping men regain their strength and vitality through safe and effective hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using bioidentical hormones.
Understanding the Role of Testosterone
Testosterone is crucial for maintaining several aspects of men’s health. It influences muscle strength, bone density, mental clarity, and sexual health. As testosterone levels decrease with age, men might notice symptoms that interfere with their quality of life, such as reduced energy, lower libido, mood fluctuations, and cognitive fog. These changes can impact your confidence,
work performance, and personal relationships.
Are You a Candidate for Hormone Replacement Therapy?
To determine if hormone replacement therapy might be right for you, ask yourself the following questions:
Do you often feel fatigued, even after a full night’s sleep?
Have you noticed a decrease in your muscle mass or strength, despite regular exercise?
Are you experiencing a diminished sex drive or erectile dysfunction?
Do you find it harder to focus or experience frequent mental fog?
Have you been feeling irritable, anxious, or depressed without a clear reason?
Are you gaining weight, particularly around the midsection, despite maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it could be a sign that your testosterone levels are lower than they should be. Hormone replacement therapy with bioidentical hormones may help address these issues by restoring your testosterone levels to a healthy range.
The Advantages of Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone replacement therapy can significantly enhance your quality of life. By restoring your testosterone levels, you can experience:
Increased energy and stamina
Enhanced mental focus and clarity
Improved muscle mass and strength
A revitalized sex drive and better sexual performance
A more stable mood and reduced anxiety or depression
Better overall physical and emotional well-being
At Prestige Family Medicine, we offer a one-stop solution for your hormone health. Our board-certified physician, Dr. Shikha Shah, MD, is an expert in men’s health and employs the latest, most effective methods in hormone replacement therapy, including pellet insertion and personalized
prescriptions. This ensures that your treatment is tailored to your unique needs and closely monitored by a qualified medical professional.
Why Choose Prestige Family Medicine?
When considering hormone replacement therapy, safety and expertise are critical. The only way to ensure that you’re receiving the right treatment is to work with a board-certified physician who specializes in hormone health. At Prestige Family Medicine, we bring the latest technology and expertise to your care. Our comprehensive, on-site services mean you can have all your needs met in one place, making us the ideal choice for your hormone health. We also do all our labs on site so you don’t have to go multiple places to accomplish your medical needs.
Take the First Step Toward Better Health
Don’t let the effects of aging slow you down. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, it’s time to take control of your health. Hormone replacement therapy at Prestige Family Medicine could be the key to regaining your energy, confidence, and overall well-being.

From Homemaker to Entrepreneur: How Callie Built a Thriving Business from Her Kitchen
Written by Maria Hayes
In our “Women in Entrepreneurship” column, we love highlighting women who have transformed their passions into thriving businesses. Today, we’re excited to introduce Callie, a stay-at-home mom who turned her passion for holistic health into a flourishing business. Balancing the demands of homeschooling her five children and running a brand that now spans multiple storefronts, Callie embodies resilience and determination. Her journey is a testament to the incredible things that can happen when you follow your passion and take that bold step forward.
Callie’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2021 with a simple goal: to create a natural remedy for her family by making homemade elderberry syrup. What started as a personal project quickly blossomed as friends and neighbors began requesting her syrup. Today, her brand, “The Suburban Homesteader,” is featured in nine storefronts across Phenix City, Columbus, and Auburn. But Callie’s path to success hasn’t been without its challenges. From managing homeschooling to handling the logistics of running a growing business, she has learned to navigate the ups and downs with grace, proving that success often comes from embracing chaos and pressing on.
Callie credits much of her success to the supportive network of women around her. She quickly saw the value of building connections within the vibrant small business community in Columbus. One of her biggest lessons was not letting fear or hesitation hold her back—advice she now shares with other aspiring entrepreneurs. “If you’re thinking about starting a small business, don’t wait. Just do it,” she says. By taking the leap and embracing local markets and shops, Callie not only expanded her business but also found a sense of camaraderie with other mothers and entrepreneurs juggling similar challenges.
What makes Callie’s story especially inspiring is how she involves her family in the journey. Her children have watched her build “The Suburban Homesteader” from the ground up, witnessing firsthand the dedication and perseverance it takes to run a small business. This experience has ignited their own entrepreneurial sparks, with each of them exploring their interests and finding ways to earn money doing what they love. For Callie, success is more than the number of storefronts; it’s about setting an example for her children and showing them that with passion and determination, they too can achieve their dreams.
Callie’s journey is a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about taking the first step, learning along the way, and not being afraid to ask for help. Her story speaks to the strength and resilience of women who balance family, work, and their passions every day. As she continues to expand “The Suburban Homesteader,” Callie serves as a beacon of inspiration for other women dreaming of turning their passions into reality. Her message is clear: with courage, community, and a little faith, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. If she can do it, so can you. So, fellow entrepreneurs, keep your eyes on the prize. Keep your chin up, buttercup—I believe in you!

Daniel’s Triumph: A Journey of Resilience and Hope at Paws Humane
Daniel’s journey began as an urgent medical plea from the local animal control, where he was brought in after what appeared to be a traumatic accident. Likely hit by a car, Daniel arrived at Paws Humane Society in severe pain, suffering from significant injuries. His body was covered in bruises, and it was clear that this poor pup had been through an unimaginable ordeal. Despite the trauma, Daniel showed nothing but resilience and a gentle spirit—a testament to his will to survive.
From the moment Daniel arrived at the shelter, the team at Paws Humane sprang into action. He was provided with immediate life-saving care, including x-rays to assess the extent of his injuries and pain management to keep him comfortable. The x-rays revealed a devastating reality: Daniel had sustained multiple hip fractures, severely affecting key bones in his pelvis. Worse yet, the trauma had damaged his sciatic nerve, which meant he had lost sensation in his right back leg. This type of nerve damage is excruciating and makes movement difficult, rendering Daniel’s
leg function uncertain.
As if the broken bones and nerve damage weren’t enough, Daniel also suffered from a herniated bladder. His bladder had been pushed out of its normal position, causing significant pain and making it difficult for him to urinate properly. The trauma had weakened or torn the muscles that typically hold the bladder in place, likely as a result of the severe impact. It was heartbreaking to see such a sweet dog endure so much pain, yet throughout it all, Daniel remained calm, affectionate, and full of love for the people caring for him.
Due to the complexity of his injuries, Daniel needed a surgery specialist to handle the extensive procedures required to repair the damage. The veterinary team determined that Daniel would need three separate surgeries, all of which would be intricate and critical to his recovery. Although his road to healing was going to be long and uncertain, Paws Humane was committed to giving Daniel the best possible chance at a full recovery.
Daniel underwent his first surgery to address the hip fractures. It was a delicate procedure aimed at stabilizing the bones and giving him a foundation to begin healing. Despite the challenges, Daniel’s positive attitude shone through, and he showed signs of improvement. The second surgery focused on his bladder, repositioning it and repairing the damaged muscles to ensure he could urinate normally again. The third and final surgery was the most complex, aimed at repairing the damage to his sciatic nerve and addressing any lingering issues with his leg.
Thanks to the expertise of the surgery specialist and the dedication of the veterinary team, all three surgeries were successful. After weeks of intensive care and rehabilitation, Daniel was finally stable enough to leave the veterinary hospital and move into foster care. His foster family, experienced in handling complex medical cases, welcomed him into their home where he now receives round-the-clock care to aid in his recovery.
The road ahead for Daniel is still a long one. His recovery will require months of physical therapy, and his mobility remains a concern. At this stage, Daniel is unable to walk on his own, but
with the help of his foster family, he has started to use his legs for short periods. This is a promising sign, as it shows that the surgeries are working, and there is hope that he will eventually regain full use of his legs.
Perhaps the most encouraging news is that veterinarians are optimistic about his bladder function. This was one of the most critical aspects of his recovery, as bladder control issues can lead to a poor quality of life. With careful monitoring and continued treatment, Daniel is making progress, and the medical team is hopeful that he will regain full control.
Daniel’s story is one of incredible resilience. It is a testament to the power of love, care, and the unwavering dedication Paws Humane, with the support of the community, provides thousands of at-risk animals each year. From the moment he was brought to Paws Humane, to the surgeries that saved his life, and now through his recovery, Daniel has faced every challenge with a courageous heart. His journey may not be over, but every step forward brings him closer to a brighter future.
