Meet Your Locally-Owned Hometown Local Grocer: Cost Kutter Grocery
I love writing the Business Spotlight because I get to sit down and talk to local owners about their business and how they are doing what they are doing. Hometown local business is the backbone for any community. Let me introduce you to Jay Mitchell, Owner Operator of Cost Kutter Grocery located on Hamilton Rd, just off Manchester in Columbus. Here is the interview. Hope you like as much as I enjoy doing these.
Bill: Jay you and your partners bought the Cost Kutter Grocery Store here in Columbus about a year ago. You have a long history with this location and the store that it was before you made it a Cost Kutter Grocery store. I think our readers would love to know the connection.
Jay Mitchell: My partners and I bought the Cost Kutter location at 4217 Hamilton Road a year ago from Save a lot. Prior to Save a lot that location was a Lewis Jones Food Market. Lewis Jones was a Columbus based family owned chain of seven supermarkets that date back to 1933. They were well known for having the best quality meat and produce in town and for outstanding hometown customer service. I had the privilege of working in the Lewis Jones stores in 1997 and 1998 for the second generation owners Cary, Ned, and Jerry Jones. It was a great opportunity for me to learn and gave me a view into what the potential of the Columbus market really is. While we are operating Cost Kutter as a value format, we hope to bring some of that legacy of friendly neighborhood service, great meat and produce, and hometown pride back to our store.
Bill: You’re one of three owners of Cost Kutter Grocery. The ownership seems to cover all the bases for how run a good grocery store. Your fami-
By Bill Evans
ly background is grocery stores. You grew up in the business. What about your partners?
Jay: I am a third-generation family grocer. My grandfather started the grocery business in 1945, my father Jack spent 60 years working in the grocery business full time. My family owns Mitchell Grocery Corp, a wholesale grocery warehouse that provides the primary products and services to 185 family-owned supermarkets across 5 states. I started working in stores at 13 years of age and have worked in all departments of the store from sack boy to meat cutter, from produce man to district manager.
My partners in the Cost Kutter stores are Clay Kennamer and Jimmy Wright.
Jimmy is the owner of Wrights Market in Opelika, AL, he grew up in the grocery business starting in his father’s store at 12 years old. He has expanded his facility and his sales greatly in the time he has served the Opelika community. He is very involved in civic affairs in his community and is an advocate for bringing together independent grocers with underserved communities through the work he does in conjunction with the National Grocers Association. Jimmy was instrumental in the vision of developing a meat driven value format to serve both rural and urban markets across south Georgia. He is dedicated to serving both his customers and his team.
Clay comes to us from a farming and Beef Production background. He grew up on his family farm in North Alabama before attending Auburn University. He operates a sizeable cow/calf operation and backgrounding yard. He has been very active in farm organizations including a stint as President of Alabama Cattlemen’s association. He has been passionate in insuring our stores are clean, organized, friendly and inviting and has lent a discerning eye in making sure our meat offering is up to “Cattleman” standards.
One of my favorite things about being in the Cost Kutter ownership group is the passion of our owners and our team. I have known both of my partners for over 25 years. We have very similar ideas and values on how to approach business and how to serve. We can be quick and nimble in making decisions about a business opportunity whether that is a store location, a great buy on a truck load of product, or adjusting programs to better help our customers deal with a changing environment.
Bill: What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a local grocery store owner?
Jay: Our entrance into the Columbus market has been somewhat “under the radar”. We had been studying potential opportunities to acquire stores in Georgia for a couple of years and doing homework on possible markets. We got an opportunity to purchase 8 Save a lot stores, but in order to get them we had to take them over immediately and “build the plane as we were flying it” while converting over to Cost Kutter. We
encountered many challenges in getting our arms around a far flung group of stores while integrating computer systems, changing out signage, and standing up distribution in some new markets. We have tried to make sure things were operating as we wanted before making a big push on advertising. So we have depended on facebook and word of mouth for most of our exposure, with and occasional mailout to homes.
Bill: How many stores do you own outside of Columbus? (Let’s plug all of them)----you never know who might get a copy of this.
Jay: Now that we are a year in, we feel like we have a motivated and experienced store team, we are fully stocked and supplied, we have our meat and produce programs working correctly, we have our systems communicating correctly, we have 10 Cost Kutter stores serving markets across Georgia including LaFayette, Columbus, Americus, Cordelle, Dawson, Tifton, Cairo, Douglas, Valdosta, and Brunswick, and we are ready to grow. And I love sharing our story.
Bill: What opportunities do you see for growth ----any future expansion plans in the future?
Jay: We feel that the Cost Kutter offering is ideal for today’s economic climate. Our goal is to provide the customer with exceptional value. We do that in a number of ways, one is simplicity. We won’t rotate your tires, fill your prescription, do your dry cleaning, or pump your gas while you shop with us. We are a simple neighborhood grocery store. What we will offer you is full stores, fresh meat and produce. Quick and friendly service. We sell a curated assortment of the most popular national brands, a broad assortment of affordable private label items featuring our Food Club. Simply done, and That’s Smart Labels, and a changing assortment of opportunity buy or closeout items.
We stock around 2,500 items in the store compared to 30,000 items or more. That means less dollars tied up in inventory, less space needed to store, process, and display our product. Which means we spend less on rent, utilities, transportation, and extra staff than our superstore competitors and can pass the savings on to you. We price our products at our cost to buy, warehouse, transport and stock on the shelf, then we add a consistent 10% fee at the register to cover our operating expenses.
We work with a wide network of national manufacturers and local vendors and are constantly shopping the market to find the best deals for family shoppers. If changing the size we carry of a product or changing the brand we promote gives our shopper a better deal we can make that change quickly.
We cut our meats fresh in store daily with dedicated trained butchers. We endeavor to have the freshest meat and produce possible and our ad prices on fresh meat are garnering much attention for our stores.
In addition, our smaller store footprint means you can get in and out of our store quickly, without having to park a mile away and navigate a store the size of 3 football fields. We still staff our registers with real people, who live in your neighborhood, and will thank you for shopping with us.
Bill: Jay, I love your story and your connection to the community.
Jay: We also believe that giving back to the community is crucial. My dad always said “If you want to have good neighbors, be a good neighbor.” We are thankful to have been welcomed into your neighborhood. One way that we are giving back is participating in Dining for Charities. You can purchase a $20 value deal for only $10 and have a portion of your purchase go to local nonprofits.
Bill: We truly appreciate your participation in Dining for Charities and on behalf of all our nonprofits thank you for that. Any last thoughts?
Jay: We are working hard every day to cut your total grocery bill. All we ask is that you give us the chance to prove that we can.
Bill: Thank you for sharing your Cost Kutter Grocery story with our readers. I would add that everyone should stop by and shop local. As Jay told me at one point, “Before you go to the big box stores, shop Cost Kutter Grocery first.”

The discount program is available to customers on a variety of rate plans, and customers meeting at least one of the below criteria may qualify for the expanded discount program:

· Receive Social Security Disability Insurance
· Receive Supplemental Security Income
· Participate in the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program (HUD Section 8)
Program participants may receive a discount of $33.50 on their bill each month. Full program details are available on Georgia Power’s website.
“Georgia Power believes that everyone should have access to clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy, we understand that energy costs are an important part of every family’s budget, and we want to be there when our customers need us the most,” said Latanza Adjei, senior vice president of Customer Experience for Georgia Power. “The expanded Income-Qualified Discount is just one example of how we work with the Georgia PSC to develop programs to meet the needs of our customers. We’re committed to connecting customers – including senior citizens, those with one-time or ongoing special needs, and those with limited incomes – with the right programs and resources that can aid them in lowering and paying their bills.”
In addition to the Income-Qualified Discount, Georgia Power offers various other income-qualified programs such as Energy Assistance for Savings & Efficiency (EASE), and partners with community action agencies across Georgia that offer services such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), emergency assistance, home weatherization and more. Fox Theatre Institute Awards $50,000 Grant to Springer Opera House for Essential Repairs
Last month, the Fox Theatre Institute (FTI), the community partnerships division of Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, awarded the Springer Opera House a $50,000 grant to support crucial repairs to the roof and the replacement of the HVAC system in the Springer’s education building. FTI, based in Atlanta, provides programming, consulting, and grant funding to historic theaters and structures throughout Georgia and the Southeast. This recent grant cycle saw FTI commit over $500,000 across three funding categories.
The Fox Theatre Institute (FTI) is a dynamic outreach program offering historic preservation expertise, consultation, and education to performing arts venues in Georgia and the region.
Created by Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, an iconic attraction widely acclaimed for its positive community impact, FTI helps other cultural institutions renew, reinvigorate, and restore artistic vitality. FTI offers financial assistance, restoration support, and operations mentoring to leverage resources and stimulate local economies, ensuring the artistic pulse of beloved communities remains strong. Since its inception in 2008, FTI has committed over $3.3 million across four grant categories: Preservation, Historic Structure Studies, Technical Assistance, and Urgent/Emergency Grants, each offering up to $500,000 in support.
“With FTI’s grant of $50,000, we will be better equipped to serve our community’s families with more class offerings and higher capacity,” said Tate LeClair, Director of Development for the Springer. “This funding enables us to continue our mission of making theatre arts an instrument for education, community dialogue, entertainment, and growth through a variety of programming, training, artistic development, and outreach.”
The Fox Theatre, one of Atlanta’s premier live entertainment venues, hosts more than 250 performances annually in its 4,665-seat theatre. The historic venue attracts over 500,000 visitors each year for concerts, ballets, comedy, and movies, as well as over 100 private events like wedding receptions and corporate meetings. The Fox’s Marquee Club, presented by Lexus, is a luxurious three-story bar available to Club Level ticket holders or annual members. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization, the Fox Theatre is a protected landmark and nationally acclaimed theatre.
Leigh Burns, Director of the Fox Theatre Institute, shared, “Now in our 15th year, FTI has had a tremendous opportunity to increase not only the preservation of historic theatres but also to see positive results for the ongoing economic and cultural impact created in their surrounding downtowns. We have many exciting plans for the next 15 years and look forward to continuing investing and expanding the footprint of our programs.”
FTI also manages outreach initiatives such as “Fox in a Box,” a free educational program for Georgia’s elementary schools; Georgia Presenters, a statewide talent booking network; and Preservation Grants, which offer funding options for historic theatre preservation. For more information, visit www.foxtheatre.org.
The Springer Opera House, located in Columbus, Georgia, is a producing theatre company housed within a 152-year-old national historic landmark. As one of only seven producing theatres in the country with such a unique setting, the Springer Opera House has a rich history of cultural preservation and artistic excellence. Recognized as the State Theatre of Georgia during its 100th Anniversary Season in 1971, the Springer is dedicated to using the performing arts for education, participation, entertainment, and growth, while preserving its histor ic significance. The Springer Theatre Academy, one of America’s largest youth theatre training conservatories, enhances its mission by imparting valuable “Life Skills through Stage Skills” to students ages 5-18.

The Importance of a OneStop-Shop Approach in Family Medicine
In today’s fast-paced world, the convenience and efficiency of healthcare are more important than ever. As a board-certified family medicine physician, I, Dr. Shikha Shah, am dedicated to providing comprehensive care that meets the diverse needs of our patients. At Prestige Family Medicine, we have embraced a one-stop-shop approach to patient care, offering a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services under one roof. This approach not only enhances the patient experience but also ensures timely and accurate medical care.
One of the key benefits of our one-stop-shop approach is the ability to conduct essential diagnostic tests on-site. For instance, our practice offers Electrocardiograms (EKGs), Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) and vascular studies, sleep study machines, and ultrasound diagnostics. EKGs are crucial for monitoring heart health, while ABI and vascular studies help detect peripheral artery disease early. Our sleep study machines allow for the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders, and ultrasound diagnostics provide real-time imaging for various conditions. Having these services inhouse means that patients can receive immediate results and appropriate treatment plans without the need for multiple appointments at different locations. This is particularly beneficial in a small town like Columbus, GA, where accessibility and convenience are paramount.
Nurse Neeley of Prestige Family Medicine
In addition to diagnostic services, our practice also features in-house lab testing, further streamlining the patient care process. With on-site labs, we can quickly perform blood work, urine tests, and other laboratory analyses, providing patients with prompt and accurate results. This reduces the waiting time for diagnosis and treatment, leading to better health outcomes. Moreover, we have expanded our team to include Nurse Practitioner Kristen Neely, allowing us to accommodate same-day appointments in most cases. This expansion ensures that patients receive timely medical attention, which is especially important for acute illnesses or urgenthealth concerns.
At Prestige Family Medicine, we are committed to delivering comprehensive and convenient care to our patients. Our one-stop-shop approach not only simplifies the healthcare process but also fosters a more personalized and efficient patient experience. We invite you to experience the benefits of our integrated services firsthand. Visit our website at www. prestigefamilymedicine.org or call us to schedule your appointment today. Let us be your trusted partner in health, providing all the care you need in one convenient location.

Blood Donors Needed to Help Patients at St. Francis-Emory Healthcare
LifeSouth Community Blood Centers asks the Columbus community to donate blood to support St. Francis-Emory Healthcare and their patients. Blood donors help make sure blood is available before it is needed to help patients suffering from traumas, cancers and chronic illnesses.
“St. Francis-Emory Healthcare joins LifeSouth in a consistent focus on the health and wellness of those in the communities we both serve,” said Melody Trimble, CEO of St. Francis-Emory Healthcare. “Blood donation is a crucial component of our day-to-day operations and LifeSouth’s donors supply crucial blood components we rely on every day. As the need for blood products remains at a critical level, please remember to support blood donation with LifeSouth to ensure we have the blood needed to best care for those who depend on us.”
LifeSouth’s welcomes donors to their new donor center at 5550 Whittlesey Boulevard, Suite 820, next to Kirklands and TJ Maxx. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and encourages businesses and churches to host blood drives with LifeSouth.
“We are proud to serve St. Francis-Emory Healthcare as their sole blood provider. As a community blood center our focus is local donors helping local patients,” said LifeSouth District Director Sharon Carpenter. “Stop into our donor center, or when you see our big red, white and blue bloodmobiles at blood drives around town, please come aboard and donate.”
LifeSouth encourages residents to help in one or more of the following ways:
Make a blood donation. It is more important now than ever to make sure blood is available for patients. LifeSouth welcomes regular and first-time donors to visit one of its donor centers, or find one of its signature red, white and blue buses to donate at a mobile blood drive.
Host a blood drive. LifeSouth welcomes the support of businesses, organizations, churches, professional groups and neighborhoods looking for a meaningful way to give back to the community.
Encourage a first-time donor. With a low percentage of the population annually participating in the blood donation process, the best way to make a difference is to encourage someone to donate with you at one of LifeSouth’s donor centers or blood drives.
Now through, July 31, all donors will receive at $20 e-gift card and donors who donate at the donor center in Columbus will also receive a LifeSouth t-shirt. Donors who give platelets or double red cells will receive an additional $20 e-gift card. First time donors are encouraged to try blood donation, and LifeSouth asks regular donors to come to a blood drive or blood donor center and bring a friend. All donors also receive a mini-physical, including blood pressure, temperature, iron level and cholesterol screen.
Donors must be at least 17 or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is needed. LifeSouth’s donor center in Columbus is located at 5550 Whittlesey Blvd. and open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For additional information about donation or to find a blood drive near you, call LifeSouth toll-free at 888-795-2707 or visit www.lifesouth.org. Appointments can also be made online.
