Nurturing a Legacy, Shaping the Future of Education and Workforce Development Coming down Howard Avenue in Columbus, Georgia—a quiet street in a quiet part of town—one may at first be surprised to see the art deco monolith that is Jordan High School standing as a proud sentry amidst a quaint and conventional neighborhood.

The school’s location and overall design harken back to a bygone era when public education was vastly different than it is today. Yet, despite its historic exterior and grounds, the students inside of the building are embarking on a scholastic journey utilizing the latest in modern equipment and technology.

Within its walls, Jordan’s students are working with state-of-theart simulators, fabrication equipment, and computers. The brickand-mortar exterior along with its newly renovated interior facilities creates a perfect marriage of Jordan’s deeply-rooted history and its bright future.

Jordan has the unique distinction of being the very first vocational/technical high school in America. Founded in Columbus in 1906 as Secondary Industrial School, the name Jordan Vocational High School was bestowed when the school moved to its current location on Howard Avenue in the late 1930s. The grounds itself was donated by the family of G. Gumby Jordan, former School Board Chairman, industrialist, and the educational champion responsible for the school’s inception.

Since it first opened its doors, Jordan has been the alma mater for countless Columbus-area businesspeople, political and civic leaders, championship sports teams, and even familial legacies that

have spanned generations. Anywhere you go, its alumni will express their pride in being a Red Jacket and will gladly boast of their time and ties to the school and community-at-large.

It’s upon this enduring legacy that Jordan is now forging ahead with a new phase of progressive education.

In 2019, Jordan Vocational High School became a designated College and Career Academy. As the only institution of its kind in Muscogee County, this designation has breathed new life into its academic and vocational (now known as CTAE—Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education) programs.

College and Career Academies (CCAs) are a unique educational mechanism spelled out by the Georgia Legislature over a decade ago. There are currently more than 50 CCAs across the state of Georgia, with additional Academies being added each year. These Academies are an innovative relationship that binds together the work of the local School Board, business community, and post-secondary institutions (read: Columbus State University and Columbus Technical College).

The purpose of a CCA is to streamline and bolster local workforce development efforts through public education. CCAs are given flexibility in their overall design and implementation, with the intent being to more rapidly and thoroughly introduce students to the workplace through a heightened emphasis on CTAE and greater involvement in Work-Based Learning (WBL) and Dual Enrollment (DE).

At Jordan in Fall of 2023, nearly forty (40) students were engaged in its Work-Based Learning activities at more than thirty (30) local businesses. These businesses range from locally-owned restaurants and construction contractors to doctor’s offices and grocery stores.

These students generated nearly $140,000 in one semester through their WBL efforts and are on-track to not only graduate, but to become vital members of the local workforce.

These students include such stand-outs at Haven Walter, a senior at Jordan. Mr. Walter works part-time at Uptown Pediatrics as he prepares to finish his final year then enroll at Mercer University and eventually become a pediatrician. This is in addition to his numerous duties at President of Jordan’s Journalism Club, involvement with its robotics team, and his regular schedule of volunteering throughout the community.

Other examples of Jordan’s success include students such as Jo’Haylee Davis, also a senior. Ms. Davis recently took on a role

working with C.W. Matthews Contracting Company, a prominent Georgia-based grading and transportation contractor. When she’s not studying or participating in school athletics, Ms. Davis can be found on the C.W. Matthews job site operating heavy equipment and helping to build Columbus’ infrastructure.

It is students such as these—and thousands of others—who have helped write Jordan’s history and who are paving the way for its future. Each day, their lives and achievements are penning a new chapter in that history as Jordan continues to produce the skilled young people the community needs to continue its upward trajectory.

Where that trajectory may go as our local economy evolves and grows is anyone’s guess. However, with nearly 120 years of success in building the skilled workers of tomorrow, it is safe to say Jordan is well-suited to lead the way in training the best and brightest our community has to offer.

It’s a post-show encore performance that puts the audience at the heart of the action as cast members perform show songs with a few extra classics from the American Songbook thrown in. Included with the cost of a ticket, it’s a bonus that brings the best of the stage back for one more take!

Springer Speaks Cast Talk Back: Unveiling Behind-the-Scenes Magic Opening weekend concludes with a Sunday afternoon talk-back event, where the spotlight shifts from the stage to the actors themselves. Audiences are invited to ask questions, gain insights into the production process, and learn more Actors Daniel Durston and Courtlyn Holt portrayed Elvis and girlfriend Dixie in Elvis A Musical Revolution about the characters and the story. It’s a great chance to connect with the performers and dive into the world of the play.

The Vital Role of Independent Non-Profit Hospice Care Provided by Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama Our independent non-profit hospice stands out in the Chattahoochee Valley as a beacon of compassion and support for people facing life-limiting illnesses. Our work is driven by mission rather than profit, and Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama fulfills a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families during the challenging end-of-life journey.

Columbus Hospice is the original hospice in the Chattahoochee Valley, formed 45 years ago in 1979, and we have continued our non-profit tradition since that time, providing care to terminally ill persons, regardless of their ability to pay. In fact, in 2023 Columbus Hospice provided almost $1.6 million in uncompensated care (to those without insurance, and those with insufficient insurance.) We meet these financial needs thanks to the support of compassionate and generous donors, for whom we are eternally grateful.

Licensed in Georgia and Alabama, we comply with the comprehensive regulations required by both states, as well as national regulations from the Federal government. Even more, Columbus Hospice is the only hospice in the area to be accredited by The Joint Commission, an organization that sets high performance standards. Only 22% of U.S. hospices

strive for and achieve The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.

Unlike traditional healthcare providers, independent non-profit hospice care is provided with a distinct focus on personalized, patient-centered care. Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama is dedicated to offering support, comfort, and dignity to those facing terminal illness. We have never been owned by another organization, and no other hospice was formed as a subsidiary of Columbus Hospice. We serve Georgia residents through our office in Columbus, and Alabama residents through the office in Phenix City, covering 16 counties between the two locations.

At the heart of the non-profit hospice care model is a commitment to providing comprehensive, interdisciplinary care that addresses not only the physical needs of patients but also their emotional and spiritual well-being. The team at Columbus Hospice is composed of skilled healthcare professionals, including nurses, social workers, chaplains, counselors, certified nursing assistants, physicians, nurse practitioners, and volunteers, all working collaboratively to create an environment of compassion and understanding.

say we are going to do. All hospices are not the same, and you have a choice in hospice care providers. A physician, hospital, or other person may refer you to another hospice, but you always have the right to request Columbus Hospice by name. When our admissions nurse meets with you, the care they describe to you is the care that you will receive, plus more. Living up to our promise – our promise to make a painful, difficult time so much better – is part of our core values.

The financial structure of our non-profit hospice sets us apart from our for-profit counterparts. We shift resources back into patient care, rather than maximizing shareholder returns. This allows us to focus on providing services beyond those of other hospices, such as comprehensive bereavement support, complementary therapies, community outreach programs, Pet Peace of Mind pet care, and a Patient Quality of Life fund.

Our RNs, Social Workers, Chaplains, and a Physician are on call, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and we come to you when you call for us.

Our employees are selected for their education and experience, then we provide an extensive orientation and continuing education to ensure that our team is the best. In return, our average team member has been with us for over 8 years, while many are celebrating work anniversaries of 20-30 years. Specialized hospice and palliative care certification is encouraged, and many team members have achieved that goal; this is important because that knowledge and experience is reflected in the care they provide.

In a landscape where healthcare can sometimes feel impersonal, Columbus Hospice offers solace, comfort, and dignity to those in our care.

We know how important it is that our care be exactly what is needed just when it is most needed. Sometimes that includes short-term inpatient hospice care, such asthat we provide in the area’s only hospice inpatient facility, the Columbus Hospice House. 25 private, upscale patient rooms allow patients to receive short-term aggressive symptom management, as well as short-term periods of respite (relief) care for the caregiver.

While hospice is usually thought of as care for older persons, the reality is that people of all ages receive care from Columbus Hospice, including infants and children. We also support children in this community through our free grief support camp, Camp Hope, through our Bereavement Counselors.

Host a Blood Drive with LifeSouth

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers asks the Columbus community to help support the local blood supply by hosting blood drives.

“Blood drives are vital to help make sure blood is there when our local hospitals need it,” said LifeSouth District Director Sharon Carpenter. “We look forward to working with businesses, organizations, schools and churches who would like to host blood drives and provide an amazing experience while saving lives.”

There is no fee to host a drive, and LifeSouth provides all the necessary equipment, donor recognition gifts and support to help make your drive a success. LifeSouth can facilitate blood drives using one of its signature red, white and blue bloodmobiles, or create a “pop-up” donor center indoors. Your local LifeSouth team will work with you to identify the best location for your blood drive.

LifeSouth is the blood provider for St. Francis-Emory Healthcare, and blood collected by LifeSouth helps their patients.

In addition, LifeSouth’s Youth Grant Program supports non-profit youth organizations in the community by providing reimbursement to those programs that host blood drives and recruit blood donors. The program helps educate youth about the importance of blood donation and provide lifesaving blood components to patients in the community.

Will Hudson, born on March 20, 1995, in Auburn, AL, emerged into a world where his extraordinary spirit would distinguish him from the very beginning. Even in his toddler years, Will displayed a remarkable intellect, immersing himself in books and astonishing those around him by effortlessly reciting the U.S. presidents both forwards and backwards. His early years were marked by participation in state spelling and geography bees, showcasing a competitive edge that would characterize his entire childhood.

A dedicated and disciplined swimmer with Auburn Aquatics, Will not only participated but excelled, advancing numerous times to Southeastern Swimming Regionals. His high school years at Auburn High School, where he graduated in 2013, served as a solid foundation for both academic and personal growth. During this period, Will contributed as a runner with Haygood, Cleveland, Pierce, Thompson & Short, LLP, an experience that fueled his aspirations to attend law school and reinforced his desire to serve others as a future attorney.

Upon graduating from Auburn High School, Will’s adventurous spirit led him to John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH, in the fall of 2013. His arrival at JCU was marked by the distinct Alabama license plate that set him apart from the beginning. Will wasted no time in making his college experience meaningful, joining Beta Theta Pi shortly after his freshman orientation and becoming actively involved with the Student Union as a Senator.

Will’s love for travel took him to 40 of the 50 states, and one of the most memorable experiences occurred during his immersion trip to El Salvador with JCU Campus Ministry. Despite his newfound joy in Cleveland, Will always found great pleasure in visiting Auburn, attending Auburn University football games, and proudly showcasing his hometown to college friends.

The turning point in Will’s life came after his sophomore year when he began experiencing pain in his left knee. A diagnosis at the Cleveland Clinic in July 2015 revealed osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that typically originates in the cells forming bones, often affecting children, teens, and young adults. At just 20 years old, Will, far from being a regular patient, actively engaged in his care.

His orthopedic surgeon recalls a moment of connection when Will, handed the surgeon his business card, immediately reciprocated with his own.

Will’s journey through treatment was strenuous, encompassing 15 weeks of chemotherapy, a tumor resection followed by a total knee replacement, and an additional 15 weeks of chemotherapy.

Remarkably, he managed to balance his treatment with academic pursuits and leadership roles at JCU, assuming the role of Student Union President mere weeks after an exhaustive 8-hour surgery.

In December 2016, a follow-up scan revealed a metastatic lesion on Will’s lung, marking a new phase in his battle. Over the next four years, he faced multiple metastases in his lungs, confronting aggressive relapses with an unwavering determination to live fully and with intention. During this time, Will fell in love, graduated from John Carroll University in 2018, and pursued law studies at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. In October 2019, during his second year of law school, Will proposed to his girlfriend Kate, marking a moment of joy amid his challenging journey. However, just weeks later, he received another devastating diagnosis—Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a blood disorder that can manifest following cancer treatments. This led to a series of medical interventions, including regular blood and platelet transfusions and a stem cell transplant in April 2020.

On August 18, 2020, Will’s unexpected passing left a void, but his story does not end here. The legacy of his resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit lives on, inspiring those who knew him and those who come to learn of his extraordinary journey.

Established with a simple yet profound mission, this organization is on a steadfast pursuit to support and enhance the lives of those affected by sarcoma and their loved ones.

The reality of a sarcoma diagnosis can be overwhelming, from the initial shock to the challenges of navigating medical appointments and finding a supportive community. The Power of Will recognizes that this journey is not meant to be traveled alone, and it exists to offer support in various impactful ways.

With inspiration drawn from Will’s journey, the organization advocates for improved treatment options. Meet Carla Bounds Written by Maria Hale

As an entrepreneur in general we more than second guess ourselves. Most of the entrepreneurs that I have spoken with over the years, saw a need within their community and wanted to fulfill it, kind of like a give back. Some entrepreneurs have the need to create self fulfillment. Some just have a dream and run with it. None of those options are wrong, they just have to be right for the person who is chasing their dream. I want to introduce you to the owner of BLUEBELLE Local Mercantile, Carla Bounds. Carla is an ARMY widow, who chose to follow a path that just seemed to be exactly where she was supposed to be.

Stationed in Fort Stewart with her husband and their two daughters, Carla was living the life she always dreamed. When she got the news about her husbands sacrifice, she of course was devastated. Being an ARMY wife is not for the weak. However, Carla had to overcome the heartache that the loss of her husband left, Looking into a new future that didn’t include her husband was a challenge that Carla faced head on. About a year after Brian had passed Carla moved to Columbus, two kids in tow and an old hobby of refinishing furniture.

“He was in the infantry, we were stationed at Fort Stewart back then. We moved here in 2016, one year after he passed. I decided it was time to get back to work and tapped into my old hobby of refinishing furniture. My now best friend worked at Bluebelle and convinced me to get a booth. I got a rather large one and was ready to make this my first step at running my own business. That quickly turned into getting a second large space. The opportunity to buy Bluebelle came up a few months after that in the summer of 2018.

Jumped in with both feet and made Bluebelle my thing!” Carla not only made BLUEBELLE her thing but s. When asked about why she chose to but she took it and ran. Bluebelle and what her purpose was for continuing she was real honest.

“My why has some layers because it started out as a way to not only give myself some fulfillment and purpose after my husband passed away, but to show my two daughters what I’m made of while also showing them the possibilities of hard work. Showing them that it’s okay to be scared to do something…. It’s the best time to be brave!” Carla is not only giving herself a purpose but also others in the community who may not have the funds for their own brick and mortar but can rent a space and showcase their own businesses. Carla is passionate about helping people grow in her community and also about encouraging other entrepreneurs to chase their dreams. “Owning a business is something I had never done before and this particular opportunity gave me a chance to incorporate several things that I felt passion for…. Retail, meeting people, helping people, growing, and supporting my community.

Once all that was realized “my why” was the joy that I get to experience from other local small business owners as they work on their business within our store, seeing them grow and thrive, watching them learn from mistakes and celebrate successes, supporting them as their business grows too big to be contained by Bluebelle, and starting the whole process over again every time someone comes to our store looking to join the Bluebelle family.”

We all have those things that we are afraid of. For me its always the fear of failure. Carla was asked what would you tell yourself if you could go back and say just one thing, what would that one thing be? “It’s okay to be scared, it’s human nature shows up to protect us…. But don’t force yourself out of an opportunity due to fear.” That really hit me hard when I read that little nugget of wisdom. Made me think of all of the opportunities I passed on due to the fear led decision. Just a little something to think about. Carla not only owns and operates the Bluebelle Local Mercantile but she

“There are a few things that keep me going. My two daughters are at the top of the list, the other is just my competitive spirit. I have always told those around me that there is always room for improvement, always do better than you did yesterday. I am in a constant state of competition with myself to strive to continue to learn, adapt, grow, and be a good role model for my daughters every day.” Carla takes each day with a “got to be better than yesterday mentality”, learning and growing and creating the best community she can with her passion and resilience. Carla has taken an opportunity and not only dove feet first into entrepreneurship but she has done it with such grace and integrity. She has created a community within her four walls with 125 filled spaces. Bluebelle has the option to create bigger or smaller spaces according to what each business need is. On top of creating an amazingly safe space for customers to come and shop all of the small businesses Carla hosts food truck days, she has vendor fairs and is always up for any other type of adventure that promotes other peoples businesses. The quote, “You can tell who the strong women are, they are always the ones building each other up instead of tearing others down” comes to mind when I think of Carla Bounds. Carla has another little nugget of wisdom about those times when you might be feeling slightly defeated in your entrepreneurship situation, “Embrace that feeling and LEARN FROM IT. Use that information to make your comeback. Take some time to understand what has made you feel that way and figure out a way to make it better. You didn’t come this far to only go this far.”
