Dear Readers, It’s that time of year again—the one where we somehow balance the chaos of shopping lists, school events, and holiday parties with the quiet magic of twinkling lights and the smell of cookies in the oven. December feels like a whirlwind, doesn’t it? But amidst the rush, there’s this pull to slow down, take a deep breath, and soak in what this season is really about: connection, gratitude, and love.

If I’m honest, the holidays have always been a mixed bag for me. They come with a lot of joy, yes, but also some bittersweet moments. Family dynamics can be tricky, the to-do list never seems to end, and sometimes it feels like I’m just barely keeping it all together. But over the years, I’ve learned that it’s the imperfect moments that mean the most—the times we laugh so hard we cry, the quiet mornings sipping coffee by the tree, and the unexpected kindness of a neighbor dropping off cookies “just because.”

This month, I’ve been reflecting on traditions—how they shape us, ground us, and remind us of where we’ve been. They don’t have to be big or fancy to matter.

Maybe it’s a movie you watch every year or a quirky family joke that gets repeated at the dinner table. Maybe it’s finding a way to give back, even when life feels overwhelming. These little rituals have a way of stitching us together, making the season feel like home.

As we wrap up this year and look ahead to the next, I hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate the good—big and small—in your life. Hug your people tight.

Laugh when the dog knocks over the tree. Let the cookies burn and call it a new tradition. Whatever this season looks like for you, I hope it’s full of moments that make your heart feel a little fuller.

Mister “Airborne All the Way” 96 Years Old and Still Jumping

C

ommand Sergeant Major (Retired) Les Kapelka recently celebrated his 96th birthday in the most extraordinary way—by completing his 489th parachute jump.

In honor of both his birthday and Veterans Day, Les traveled to Thomaston, Georgia, on Saturday, November 16, 2024, to make a tandem parachute jump with the Atlanta Skydive Club. Partnered with Mark Staffen of the Silver Wings Freefall Team from Fort Moore (Fort Benning), Les took to the skies with unwavering determination.

After meeting his freefall partner and securing his harness, Les boarded a 12-passenger aircraft and ascended to an altitude of 14,000 feet, where the temperature dropped to a brisk zero degrees. Attached to each other, Les and Mark exited the aircraft and free-fell approximately 10,500 feet before Mark deployed the parachute. The jump was a success, ending with a smooth landing and a warm welcome from family and friends who greeted Les with cheers in the hangar.

Les, who has meticulously kept a logbook of all his jumps, has now completed a total of 489 military and freefall parachute jumps.

A veteran of 27 years in the U.S. Army, Les served as a Jumpmaster Instructor for 25 years, teaching at Fort Moore (Fort Benning, GA), Fort

Campbell, Kentucky, and in the Republic of West Germany. He completed two combat tours in Vietnam, first with the renowned 173rd Airborne Brigade and later with the 199th Infantry Brigade. Les was combat wounded during his service and received the Purple Heart, along with numerous other awards.

Even in civilian life, Les has remained the epitome of an Airborne Soldier. Known for his engaging conversations and positive outlook, he continues to inspire those around him.

Les is also a Gold Legacy Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Eufaula, Alabama. He served as the Commander of Post 5850 for three years, contributing his leadership and dedication to the veteran community.

Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Les Kapelka’s unwavering commitment to service and his adventurous spirit are a testament to his extraordinary character. Thank you, Les, for your sacrifices and contributions to the safety and freedom of the United States.

Bo Bartlett Center to Showcase Two Compelling Art Exhibitions This January

Columbus State University’s Bo Bartlett Center is set to debut two thought-provoking exhibitions on January 18, offering audiences a chance to explore the profound intersections of literature, nature, and artistic expression.

The first exhibition, “Eye of the Blackbird,” curated by Craig Drennen, takes inspiration from Wallace Stevens’ 1917 poem “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.” With over 30 works by 10 artists, the exhibition delves into the intricate relationship between sight, thought, and creativity. Each artist brings a unique perspective to the theme, exploring how the act of observing shapes our understanding of the visual world. From Colleen Asper’s innovative fusion of painting and performance to Adam Winnie’s exploration of the unseen, the pieces collectively demonstrate how looking and thinking are inseparable elements of artistic expression.

Complementing this is the “Women of the Pacific Northwest” exhibition, which highlights the impactful contributions of women artists through 21 captivating works. This showcase

Featuring diverse mediums such as painting, sculpture, and installation, the exhibition emphasizes innovative approaches and the transformative power of nature in shaping visual storytelling.

“With ‘Eye of the Blackbird’ and ‘Women of the Pacific Northwest,’ we’re thrilled to present exhibitions that delve into the complexities of the visual world,” said Mike McFalls, director of The Bo Bartlett Center. “These shows highlight the diversity of artistic expression and the power of art to challenge, inspire, and provoke thought. From the abstract to the representational, these artists invite us to see the world in new and profound ways.”

Opening Events and Discussions The Bo Bartlett Center will host a public opening reception for both exhibitions on Wednesday, February 5, at 6:30 p.m. Ahead of the reception, visitors can attend an artist panel

discussion for “Women of the Pacific Northwest” at 5:30 p.m. An additional panel discussion for “Eye of the Blackbird” is scheduled for March 6 at 6 p.m.

Exhibition Details Both exhibitions will run through April 26, 2025, with viewing hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, excluding holidays.

Admission is free, making it accessible to all art enthusiasts.

Celebrate the Holidays at the Springer Opera House

The Springer Opera House, Georgia’s State Theatre, is bringing holiday cheer to audiences of all ages this season with two unique productions. From the nostalgic charm of A Christmas Story: The Musical to the hilariously irreverent Who’s Holiday, the Springer offers something for everyone looking to make the holidays brighter.

On the Woodruff Hall Mainstage, A Christmas Story: The Musical reimagines the classic 1983 holiday film with added charm, humor, and music. Directed by Artistic Director Keith McCoy, the show tells the heartwarming story of young Ralphie Parker and his quest for the ultimate Christmas gift—a Red Ryder BB gun. More Than a Sport

Late fall is a beloved time of year for sports fans. College and professional football are in full swing, the October Classic has come and gone, and basketball and hockey are keeping fans entertained with exciting competition.

But have we ever thought about other types of competition—ones a bit different from the usual athletic contests? Beyond the gridiron, rinks, and courts, other critical competitions are taking place in the local high school sphere.

In early November, hundreds of high school students gathered at the

Columbus Convention and Trade Center to participate in the annual Skills Competition hosted by the Association of General Contractors. These young people—who have been training diligently in various trades—tested their mettle in carpentry, masonry, welding, and more.

Rather than donning football pads, these competitors sported tool belts and steel-toed boots (with hard hats for safety, of course). They worked against the clock in timed events, completing tasks like framing walls, running electrical wires, and building cabinets.

Chattahoochee Valley Living

At the end of the event, winners advanced to the SkillsUSA state competition, set to take place in Atlanta in winter 2025. They also took home gold, silver, and bronze medals to celebrate their success.

What’s truly amazing is how many of these students are new to these trades. For many, this was their first competition, having only picked up their tools a few weeks before school started.

Take, for example, a freshman student from Jordan Vocational High School College and Career Academy who competed in the masonry category. She had never mixed mortar or built masonry walls until a few weeks prior but managed to place in the competition thanks to her dedicated teachers and the industry professionals who volunteered their time to provide hands-on training.

Her story, however, is not unique.

Competitions like these are taking place across the Chattahoochee Valley and throughout Georgia. In addition to SkillsUSA, students are participating in business and leadership events through Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), culinary arts competitions via Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and healthcare-focused contests hosted by Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).

These organizations, known as Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), are teacher-led and student-run programs that help high

school students hone occupational skills and learn valuable life lessons.

While you won’t see these events on ESPN or their champions on parade floats, something far more valuable is happening.

In the same way football teaches teamwork and cooperation, these competitions foster the same skills. Whether building a structure under tight deadlines or performing CPR and first aid with precision, these experiences shape students into productive citizens by refining their skills today.

The sense of accomplishment gained from these events is unmatched.

The look of satisfaction on a student’s face after winning a carpentry competition they spent weeks preparing for may not draw the same attention as winning the College Football Playoff—but it’s just as impactful, if not more so.

Most students won’t become professional athletes, but they will need to become professionals at something. Competitions like these give them the chance to perfect their craft while having fun along the way.

Opportunities like these are why public education in our community is thriving and why the hope for our economy continues to grow.

Though often unseen, dedicated individuals work tirelessly to ensure every student in our community has a chance to succeed—whether they’re carrying a football or a hammer.

COLUMBUS, GA, November 20, 2024 – Keep Columbus Beautiful (KCBC) has officially kicked off its 2024 Shoe Recycling Campaign with the return of its popular initiative, “Shoe Us the Love Again!” Building on the success of last year’s campaign, this year’s goal is to collect over 30,000 pairs of shoes by January 25, 2025.

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Lisa Thomas-Cutts, Executive Director of KCBC. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they can donate to us and help those less fortunate. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Why Your Soles Matter Each year, more than 350 million pairs of shoes end up in landfills.

KCBC’s Annual Shoe Recycling Campaign aims to reduce that number by diverting gently worn shoes away from waste and giving them a second life. Collected shoes are sent to developing countries, including Haiti, Central America, and Africa, where they are used as footwear or repurposed into new items. This initiative also creates job opportunities in these regions, providing economic support for those in need.

Additionally, funds raised through the campaign will support KCBC’s local projects and programs, ensuring a lasting impact both globally and within Columbus.

From Optician to Pacifier Pioneer:

For Lindsey DeOlivia, what started as a personal parenting challenge has grown into a mission to revolutionize baby safety. As a stay-at-home mom with a background as an optician, Lindsey faced a common yet frustrating dilemma: finding a pacifier that met her high safety standards.

Rather than settle for what the market had to offer, she decided to change the game entirely.

Through her brand, Soothe Beginnings, Lindsey has created a line of bottle nipples and pacifiers that prioritize safety, innovation, and quality—setting a new standard in the baby product industry. Her journey, rooted in a blend of personal experience and professional determination, is a testament to how one person’s vision can transform an industry.

A Mission Born From Necessity Lindsey’s decision to launch Soothe Beginnings wasn’t just about convenience; it was about trust and accountability. “I HAD to do something about it,” she explains. “My personal struggle revealed a bigger issue: inadequate safety standards in the U.S. pacifier market. I wanted to create a product that exceeded expectations, putting parents’ minds at ease. For me, this was about prioritizing well-being over profit.”

Her commitment to safety stems from her role as a mother. Lindsey’s daughter has been her driving force, motivating her to not only develop safer products but also advocate for higher standards across the industry.

“Every time I look at my daughter, I’m reminded why I started Soothe Beginnings. I wanted safer, better products for her, and I’m driven to ensure no other parent has to compromise on safety.”

From Optician to Entrepreneur Transitioning from a career as an optician to becoming an entrepreneur presented its own set of challenges. Lindsey entered the world of business without formal training in product development or marketing, but her determination and commitment fueled her success. She admits the journey wasn’t always easy, but her passion for making a difference kept her going.

“If I could give myself one piece of advice, it would be this: You truly can make a difference in an industry, create a product made in the USA, and be a dedicated mom all at once. Don’t underestimate the impact one person with a clear vision can have.”

Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Lindsey’s entrepreneurial journey is not only about product innovation but also about empowering other women to pursue their goals. She actively encourages women to embrace their potential, even in the face of obstacles.

“Research shows women-owned businesses often outperform others, despite facing greater adversities,” she shares. “You are powerful, and your work matters. Don’t stand alone—find your village. Together, we rise. And remember, people will judge you no matter what, so do what YOU feel called to do.”

How Lindsey DeOlivia is Redefining Baby Safety Making Waves on The Blox Lindsey’s entrepreneurial drive caught the attention of the business competition show The Blox, where she competed against other leaders to showcase her ideas and vision. Her time on the show was transformative, not only because she won but also because of the connections she made.

“The most memorable part of The Blox was the incredible connections I made,” she recalls. “I spent a week with people who didn’t need me to explain my ‘crazy’ because we’re all on this wild entrepreneurship path together. The friendships and network I gained are invaluable.”

Winning the competition opened unexpected doors. “It gave me a level of authority and credibility I didn’t have before,” Lindsey explains. “I walked away with an investor and collaborations I never dreamed possible. Companies I had admired for years started reaching out to me.”

Lessons for Success Lindsey’s experience on The Blox taught her valuable lessons about branding and strategy. “Branding is everything,” she says. “Stopping the scroll to grab people’s attention is crucial. You can have the best message in the world, but if no one sees it, it’s meaningless.”

Her advice to future competitors is practical and insightful: “Play the game well, but network HARD. The connections you make can open doors you never thought possible. Almost anything I might need in busi-

ness now, I know someone I can go to.”

The Future of Soothe Beginnings As Lindsey looks ahead, she’s focused on growing Soothe Beginnings while continuing to prioritize safety and innovation. “Our first book just launched this week, and the pacifier is almost ready to hit the market—which is beyond exciting!” she shares. “Right now, the focus is on driving home our product offerings and building cash flow to sustain and grow the business.”

Beyond product development, Lindsey hopes to inspire other entrepreneurs to take risks and follow their passions. “Take chances, make moves, and don’t be afraid to shake things up. Whatever you do, make it great. I believe in you!”
