PARENTS DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Meet STEAM INVENTORS

I had the privilege to visit with STEAM INVENTORS something I wish was available to me when I was a young boy growing up. STEAM INVENTORS is anything but a daycare, but I bet when you check them out you will agree it might be the best place to put your kids.

Their mission is to create the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. STEAM INNOVATORS is uniquely designed to spark interests among children, learn new skills in a fun-filled environment which helps them to learn, play, connect and innovate with their peer groups. Their motto is LearnNGrow.

STEAM INNOVATORS was started by a group of passionate educators on a mission to create the next generation of leaders and innovators. And when visiting with them I didn’t get the feeling that these were just words or a slogan. I believe they are committed to their mission. The Afterschool program is for 4th to 8th grade students. I must warn you that there is limited space so don’t hesitate to reach out to them. And the cost is extremely reasonable. Let me share from their website.

In the last 10 years technology and science evolved at an exponential rate. Remember even in 2010 Facebook was a trend, but now, augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, drones are used in real life every day. Think you are cutting edge? The future is already here. It is hard to keep up.

Our mission is to provide immersive STEAM learning experiences to students by engaging, connecting, innovation, and playing. STEAM Inventors is an after-school STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Educational Service created for students from Pre-K to 12 to bridge that gap between current classroom and technology and science progression. 80% of the jobs in the next decade will require technology skills. Just in the USA alone there will be 1.2 million STEM jobs. Job openings in science, technology, doctors, software developers and engineers. Yet approximately only 16% of bachelor’s degrees specialize in STEM. 4 in 5 STEM college students decided to study STEM in high school or earlier and 1 in 5 STEM college students decided to study STEM in middle school or earlier.

Technology and science are progressing at a rapid pace, school curriculums for various reasons outside their control are struggling to not only get ahead of the next trends but simply to keep up with the current one. There is a huge gap between what children are learning at school now and what they need to learn in the future. Today the half-life of a job skill is roughly 5 years, for technical skills that is even shorter, lasting only two and half years. With 58% of the existing workforce already needing new skills to do their jobs, the speed of innovation is outpacing how quickly humans can learn the new technologies.

Our goal is to prepare the kids for the jobs of their future 21st century job skills require Expert Thinking – solving new problems for which there are no routine solutions – and Complex Communication – persuading, explaining, conveying a particular interpretation of information. Our goal is to provide an immersive, problem-based learning opportunity and environment for the students to be prepared for the future job market.

I can tell you that in a very short visit with the people at STEAM INNOVATORS I became a fan immediately. And I love their MISSION---Prepare children for jobs that do not exist yet. How cool is that?

And look at their curriculum. Robitocs, Coding, Arts---using 3D Printers, AI—introduction to the complex world of AI and Machine Learning, and PBL—project based learning to enhance learning to embrace controlled risk taking and learning from failures.

Like I said, where was this when I was growing up.

If you have kids and are looking for something challenging, different, and a learning, fun, environment I encourage you to check out STEAM INNOVATORS. Call them to set up an appointment to go see them at 706-600-1126. Visit their website at www.steaminventors. com.

Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama Achieves Top Recognition in Quality Connections Program

Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama has earned four rings in the 2024 Quality Connections program from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). Quality Connections is the only national program designed to support hospice and palliative care providers in delivering high-quality, person-centered care.

The Quality Connections program is structured around four fundamental pillars, represented by four rings: Education, Application, Measurement, and Innovation. Participants are required to meet milestones within specific timeframes through activities such as quarterly data reporting and benchmarking, educational courses, case studies, and engagement on emerging issues. These activities

promote high-quality care delivery and service excellence. Achievement in the program is determined by completing activities in each of the four foundational areas, culminating in the completion of all four rings.

By participating in the 2024 Quality Connections program, Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama has achieved the highest level of recognition by closing all four rings. This accomplishment not only enhances its quality improvement program but also ensures the organization is up-to-date on the latest practices in serious illness and end-of-life care.

“At Columbus Hospice, our commitment to quality care extends beyond the clinical experience; it encompasses empathy, integrity, and respect for each individual and family we serve. We are privileged to make a meaningful difference within our community and in the lives of our patients and families,” said Wanda Geter, RN, BSN, CHPN, Quality Coordinator at Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama.

Donna Morgan, President and CEO of Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama, added,

“Our organization has a long-standing reputation for exceeding regulatory requirements and providing person-centered, high-quality care. We continuously strive to improve and ensure our team members have the skills and resources needed to support patients in achieving their care goals. We are honored by this recognition and proud that our local community benefits from a nationally recognized non-profit hospice with 45 years of experience.”

Ben Marcantonio, NHPCO COO and interim CEO, remarked, “NHPCO is dedicated to helping hospice and palliative care providers deliver the best possible care to patients and their loved ones. Quality Connections was created to support the ongoing journey of excellence. The program continues to grow and expand its content and learning opportunities, including compliance, palliative care, equity, and inclusion, to better serve patients and communities across the continuum of serious illness and end-of-life care.”

Make School Mornings More Manageable

Getting a family up and out the door before the school bell rings is no small task. Sometimes it can even seem impossible, especially when you encounter unexpected events like a wardrobe mishap or overflowing toilet.

Make mornings run more smoothly this school year with these tips from the experts at American Standard, who know all about the best tools to operate a successful household.

Work ahead, starting your morning before bed. You can lay the foundation for a successful morning before the new day even arrives. Spend time planning for the day ahead before tucking little ones in for the night. Choose outfits, track down missing shoes and verify homework is done and in backpacks before they turn in for the night. Taking time to troubleshoot in the evening can save precious minutes in the morning.

Stick to a standard wake-up routine. Getting kids out of bed when the alarm rings is only half the battle; getting them in motion is the next step. Help your little ones build effective habits so they can start preparing for the day while they’re still shaking away the lingering sleepiness. Lay out a sequence of events they’ll do every morning, such as visiting the bathroom, brushing teeth and hair, getting dressed, making the bed and eating a balanced breakfast. Encouraging these habits builds independence and self-esteem while helping your mornings move faster.

Cut back on messy moments. It’s virtually impossible to supervise every moment of your child’s get-ready routine, but having a home outfitted with the right equipment can make those moments out of sight less concerning. For example, school-aged kids might expect privacy in the bathroom, but they’re not immune to a little mischief and keeping things tidy is rarely their top priority. Consider American Standard’s innovative Champion Toilet that provides the perfect solution to some possibly messy situations. With the industry’s largest trap-way, you can expect a cleaner, more effective flush, ensuring dependable performance every time. It’s virtually impossible to clog – in testing, it even handled flushing a bucket of golf balls – providing the confidence you need that it can withstand your child’s messiest moments. Plus, its power-wash rim cleans the bowl with every flush and the patented EverClean stain-fighting surface inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.

Plan time to talk. Often, if kids are dragging their feet in the morning, it’s because they’re dreading something about the day ahead. It could be a test or a conflict with a peer, or it might be something else entirely Look for signs of concerns and offer an open environment where kids can share their worries with you even when time is tight. Talking about concerns after school is a smart way to tackle worries when they’re fresh, but reinforcing those conversations in the morning can send kids out the door more confidently.

Embrace simplicity and provide nutrition. Trying to cram too much into the morning can set you up for struggles. Avoid piling on too many morning chores and aim for basic breakfasts that provide the necessary fuel to start the day without extra fuss. A well-rounded breakfast with grains, protein and some fresh fruit makes for a perfect way to start the day. That might be a protein-packed cereal and a banana or maybe a frozen breakfast burrito and cup of grapes.

Jordan Vocational High School Looks Ahead Building on a Year of Success for an Even Brighter 2024-25

The 2023-24 school year has closed and the 2024-25 school year is only a few breaths away. As we at Jordan Vocational High School College and Career Academy prepare for this new and exciting year, we’re reflecting on our past successes in order to pave the way for future achievements. Our past year saw our students earn nearly $400,000 in wages during the school year. Twenty (20) of our graduating seniors earned additional collegiate certifications in addition to their high school diploma. On top of that, we saw marked improvement on overall grades, attendance, and behavior. Yet, we’re not content to allow these wins to be the end. The 2024-25 school year is going to be better than ever before the Red Jackets are proudly on their way as we raise the bar and press on to new heights.

Women in Entrepreneurship

Niki

Journey from Challenges to Triumph

Okay, let’s get real for a moment. How many of you have a go-to comfort food when you’re feeling down? Does it change when you’re angry? I have a few favorites depending on my mood, and I even met the subject of this article on a day when I was a bit emotional.

Meet Niki Gedroic—an entrepreneur after my own heart. I think I’ve found my match in someone who truly understands, loves, and celebrates food just like I do.

Niki is the owner of Smoke Bourbon and BBQ in Uptown Columbus. When asked about her passion for food, her response warmed my heart: “I love food!! I love what it means. I love a hot bowl of chili on a cold night. I love the comfort in a bowl of chicken soup. I love the richness of a creamy sauce over perfectly cooked pasta. I want to share my passion and love for food. But I also love providing a space where people who share my passion for this industry can come together as a family and serve deliciousness to our guests... leaving them full, happy, satisfied, and well-served.” I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Each of us has a story, and Niki is no different. She has faced her share of struggles and triumphs. Time and again, she has demonstrated that she has the resilience to achieve her dreams. When asked what advice she would give to her younger self, she shared this: “I used to weigh 365 pounds. I wish I could go back to the 4th grader who turned to food for peace and tell her that she is loved by the only person that ultimately matters—me. I’d tell her that all those hurtful words about no one loving her and her never amounting to anything were lies. One day, she would become a badass entrepreneur with a successful restaurant. I’d tell her she would bring happiness to thousands of people who would one day dine in her restaurants. I’d tell her she would travel all over the world on a Fortune 500 company’s dime. I’d tell her she is going to lose the weight and, in 2024, marry a wonderful man who patiently waited 20 years for her.”

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Niki is so much more than her achievements. She has cultivated a vibrant culture in Columbus that’s impossible to overlook. I asked her how she stays motivated, and she responded, “I am motivated by hope. I am motivated by those who said I would fail. I am motivated by people who thought I couldn’t do it. I am motivated by the cheers of my inner circle.” Having that support system is crucial!

Being a woman in the food service industry is no easy feat. Yet, Niki shines brightly, creating a culture of love and understanding through her passion for food. I often wonder what people would say to their younger selves, so it’s a question I ask during these interviews. Niki’s answer was perfectly her: “Girl... you can only pull your big girl panties up so many times before the elastic breaks, and you show your ass. I’d say, girl, show your ass. Get up and show the world you are strong and filled with power. Every stumble is an opportunity, not a failure. We can’t learn to walk without stumbling, and we can’t learn to run until we learn to walk.”

Getting laid off from TSYS after 24 years marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of an exciting new one for Niki. At 50, she was unsure of her next step. “I am thankful for those who shared their knowledge and even those who hoped I’d fail (this was motivation). I look forward to what each day holds. I want to share what I’ve learned with others and hope that one day people see me as an inspiration, as I have been inspired by so many.”

Niki Gedroic, you are truly an inspiration! Thank you for everything you’ve gone through to get where you are. Keep shining your light and loving Columbus through your food. To my fellow entrepreneurs, remember you can use whatever fuels you to keep that motivation alive. And I’ll leave you with a quote from Virginia Woolf: “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one does not dine well!”

Golf Programs Offer Veterans New Life and Connection

Columbus, GA — In a town where our commitment to Veterans and active-duty military personnel runs deep, two local golf programs are creating ripples of positive change. The PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program and the GSGA ADAPTIVE GOLF program are not just about golf; they’re about rekindling hope, fostering friendships, and bringing joy to over 500 Veterans and service members right here in Columbus.

PGA HOPE, supported by the Georgia PGA and the PGA of America, is a heartfelt initiative designed to serve both current and former U.S. military personnel. Alongside it, the GSGA ADAPTIVE GOLF program, backed by the Georgia State Golf Association, empowers individuals with physical, cognitive, or sensory impairments to enjoy the game of golf. Together, these programs provide more than just a recreational activity—they offer a vital connection.

The need for such support is underscored by a heartbreaking statistic: approximately 22

Veterans commit suicide every day. Against this backdrop, these golf programs become a crucial resource, offering Veterans a chance to step out of their homes, engage with others who share their backgrounds, and rediscover a sense of purpose through golf.

Golf is a game that welcomes everyone, regardless of their skill level, and it allows participants to enjoy the outdoors. For many Veterans, the benefits go beyond just hitting the ball. One Veteran shared, “Before I joined these programs, I was angry and just existing. Now, playing golf gives me something to look forward to and makes me feel alive.”

The impact of these programs has been profound. Since their launch in 2020, over 500 Veterans have participated, with more than 300 currently active in Columbus. Remarkably, there is no cost to participate, ensuring that all Veterans can benefit without financial strain. The programs are held at Oxbow Creek and Bull Creek, where participants receive lessons from specially trained PGA Golf Professionals.

They also enjoy gifts and discounted rounds of golf, all within a supportive, family-like atmosphere.

Recently, a generous local company stepped up, donating $200,000 to support the PGA HOPE program, Godwin Creek Golf Course, and a Junior Golf grant for a deserving youth. This significant contribution will help sustain and expand these programs, ensuring they continue to make a difference for years to come.

These golf programs highlight the power of community and the difference that targeted support can make in the lives of our Veterans. As PGA HOPE and GSGA ADAPTIVE GOLF continue to flourish, they stand as a testament to the profound impact we can have when we come together to support those who have served our country.
