Warde Nicholas ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
FROM THE MAYOR
It doesn’t get any better than springtime in Chandler. Every year I’m excited to see our parks and recreation facilities come to life with new programs and activities. Our talented team pulls out all the stops to provide wonderful options for people of all interests, ages and abilities. Who knew you could master the art of ceramics in a City studio? Or take a guided hiking trip with other
outdoor enthusiasts? Or find the bullseye with an archery class? There are so many ways to stay active and healthy with City of Chandler programs.
I’m proud to say that I lead a City Council committed to preserving these outstanding programs well into the future.
In fact, last month the Council approved a construction contract to begin work on the Tumbleweed Park Diamond Field Complex, a 31-acre complex with four lighted fields, new restrooms, landscaping and more. These types of projects are crucial to preserving the high quality of life that we experience here in Chandler.
It’s projects like these that highlight why local control
is so important for cities and towns. Local government is the truest representation of the people’s desires. That’s why I’m so disheartened by recent attempts by state legislators to usurp local control with bills like HB 2061 and SB 1063, which would eliminate the Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) tax, forcing cities and towns to either find new revenue streams or cut city services. This isn’t a good path forward.
As the political debates continue well into spring, I hope you and your families will take some time to experience all that Chandler has to offer. Visit chandleraz.gov/recreation to see how our residents’ tax dollars are put to good use.

Maria’s family moved to the sunshine state of Arizona from the coast of California in 1989, however she considers herself an Arizona native. Maria
earned her Arizona real estate license in 2005 and has been helping families, friends, and investors achieve their goal of homeownership for almost two decades. She has resided in Chandler for the last 17 years and is married and has two children. Maria enjoys reading, is pursuing a degree in medicine, spends her free time traveling, eating well, and spending time with her four-legged friend Clyde (Scottish terrier).
Maria is excited to continue assisting her community through her work at Chandler Chamber of Commerce.

Ostrich Festival Creates $9 Million Direct Economic Impact for Chandler
The 2022 Annual Chandler Ostrich Festival, a signature event hosted by the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, pumped $9 million into the local economy over the course of its two-weekend run this year. Newly implemented RFID technology allowed the Chandler Chamber for the first time to document the behavior and spending patterns of vendors and visitors in order to quantify the financial benefit to community.
Highlights of the Economic Impact Study show a total event attendance of 158,390 with nearly 75 percent of visitors coming from outside of Chandler, while 19 percent attended multiple times. Notably, more than 8,000 visitors stayed overnight, spending $1.8 million commercially.
The longtime event has garnered attention across the nation and around the world as it honors Chandler’s Ostrich farming history with the gangly and awkward bird. But the festival is more than just a fun and quirky attraction - it’s proven itself to mean big business for the city of Chandler.
“Attending the Ostrich Festival is a longstanding tradition for Chandler families, and we’re very proud of that,” said Terri Kimble, CEO/Executive Director, Chandler Chamber of Commerce. “As the City’s leading business organization, we’re even more proud of the fact that we are driving dollars to the local economy and offering so many opportunities for business success in the community.”
The research was conducted in house through Steve Levine Entertainment (SLE) with oversight from external independent contractors in economic impact data collection and reporting. Researchers took a highly conservative approach, using data from the ‘at least’ position. Key
elements of the Direct Economic Impact include dollars spent by the event organizer and visitors. Visitors are divided into two groups; Attendees (talent, media, sponsors, staff, vendors, suppliers, and volunteers) and Spectators (total spectator admissions, repeat spectators, local residents, and
casual visitors).
For more information on the Ostrich Festival’s economic impact, visit https://ostrich.wpengine.com/
The 2023 Ostrich Festival runs Thursday, March 16 through Sunday, March 19. For tickets and festival information, visit ostrichfestival.com.

International Women’s Day
March 8th is International
Women’s Day. It is a day for celebrating women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements globally. The day is also a call to action to advance women’s equality. In honor of International Women’s Day, the Chamber DE&I Committee spotlighted Chamber President and CEO Terri Kimble and her experience as a woman in a high-visibility leadership role in a predominately male-dominated industry. Terri’s impressive career in the Chamber industry spans more than 30 years. Her remarkable journey led her to become President and CEO of Arizona’s third-largest Chamber of Commerce. Terri has served as the President and CEO of the Chandler Chamber for 12 years. She is recognized as a pillar in the business community, playing a vital role in supporting the growth, development, and sustainment of Chandler-based businesses.
Chamber DE&I Committee member, Dr. Cindy Banton, conducted the following interview with Terri.
Dr. Banton: What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
Terri: It’s a time to celebrate women! Celebrate where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going.

An Interview with Terri Kimble President & CEO of Chandler Chamber of Commerce
Dr. Cindy Banton DE&I Committee Member
Terri Kimble Chandler Chamber of Commerce
Dr. Banton: What qualities do you believe make a good female leader?
Terri: Honesty, integrity, compassion, vulnerability, and being a good collaborator. Collaboration is key. Being a good collaborator means ensuring you have a seat at the table and that you can keep things moving in a positive direction. It means not only ensuring your voice is heard, but the voices of others are heard as well.
Dr. Banton: What was your journey like to becoming President and CEO of the Chamber? What challenges did you face?
Terri: First and foremost, the journey entailed learning about and understanding the community. For the Chamber to be successful and for me to be successful in my role, I sat down with each key stakeholder in the City of Chandler and members of the business community, and I asked them what they believed the Chamber did well, what areas needed improvement, and what direction they would like to see the Chamber go in the future. The Chamber is a collaboration of people working together for the greater good of the business community and business professionals. I experienced many challenges over the years and made a few mistakes. When I began my career with the Chandler Chamber, there were few female mentors in leadership positions in the Chamber world. Through the advice and guidance of my mentors and Chamber board members, I overcame the challenges. Of the top three
Chambers in the state, I am currently the only female CEO. The most important lessons of my journey are to learn from my mistakes and always celebrate the wins.
Dr. Banton: Growing up, was there someone in your life that inspired you to become who you are today? Who was it, and why?
Terri: Yes! It was two people, my Mom and Aunt Barb. My Mom was a political
that both instilled in me was that as important as having your voice heard; it is equally important to listen.
Dr. Banton: Why is it important that more women are represented in leadership roles?
Terri: Women make great leaders. We bring unique, fresh perspectives to the table. We are highly diverse in our thought processes. We are creative problem solvers and great communicators. We’re empathic, nurturing, and we’re great at crisis management.
Dr. Banton: What advice would you give the next generation of women leaders?
Terri: Always be sincere, genuine, and authentic. Find your voice and use it. Remember, “no” doesn’t always mean “no.” It means “not now.” When you feel you’ve reached the top of your game in your career or educational journey, there’s always more to learn – Keep learning and growing, don’t get comfortable. Embrace your beauty and femineity; it’s an asset. Finally, one piece of advice my mentor shared with me that I would offer women who are currently in Chamber careers is to “support the businesses and always give them grace when necessary.”
and school board member. She taught me about the importance of service and giving back to the community. My Aunt Barb served in a leadership role at the phone company when women leaders in companies were extremely rare. She taught me that I deserve to be seen and heard and to use my voice. The most important quality
The Chamber DE&I Committee expresses its sincere thanks and gratitude to Terri for allowing us to spotlight her journey as a woman in leadership.
Please join us in celebrating International Women’s Month by attending our upcoming DE&I panel, “Cracking the Code on Gender Equality” on Tuesday, March 28th.

Golf Tournament to be Held
When the Arizona Make-A-Wish foundation asked Jaxon Landfair what wish he would like to be granted, he chose to give to the future. He wanted to develop a scholarship for student to pursue careers in Law Enforcement. His wish inspired the development of the Jaxon Foundation. In addition to financial support, all scholarship recipients will be connected with “Jaxon Mentors.” These mentors are Law Enforcement professionals in a variety of areas of specialization and will stay connected to the scholarship recipients throughout their academic tenure.
On May 6, The Jaxon Foundation will host their 3rd Annual Jaxon Foundation Golf Tournament at Ocotillo Golf Club. Visit JaxonFoundation.org/golf for sponsorship opportunities and to be a part of this amazing event.
