PRESIDENT UPDATE | CEO Terri Kimble

How do I get involved with the Chandler Chamber?

We are more than halfway through the year and you may be wondering how to get involved with the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. Joining the Chandler Chamber of Commerce has long been a useful business strategy for small businesses. Being a part of the Chamber offers businesses a number of benefits and opportunities, keeping business owners on top of important issues and trends within the Chandler community. But to get the most out of your membership, it’s important to take the initiative and play an active role.

1. Attend Chamber Events

We know how time-consuming it can be to run a business but make it a priority to attend Chamber events when possible. This is your Chamber, and your participation contributes not only to the success of these events but also to the business community.

2. Communicate With Members

Don’t hesitate to bring your ideas, questions, and concerns to me and Chamber Team. Your input is appreciated! Not only does it make for a stronger organization, but we also communicate regularly with our government officials and can help your voice be heard in your community.

3

.Promote Members’ Businesses

Chamber members share contracts and opportunities by accessing and recommending each other’s business. The more you recommend other members, the more likely they are to do the same for you. This is a team effort!

4 Join A Chamber Committee

The Chandler Chamber has various boards and committees that allow you to work directly with community leaders, as well as be a leader yourself. These committees always welcome new members and are a great way to network. Service on Chamber committees and boards can help you build stature in your community.

The Chandler Chamber provides you many tools to help you make your business grow; all you have to do is dedicate a little time. Get involved in your Chamber and take ownership! To learn more about making the most of your membership, explore our website at www. chandlerchamber.com or follow us on Social Media.

BOARD CHAIR

Every fall the Chamber board begins its process of interviewing and appointing new board members.

Summer slows us all down a bit in Arizona, which means the Chamber and its Board of Directors can take a little time to prep for the future. Here are just a few things the Chamber Board is talking about this month.

The term begins in January with a swearing-in ceremony at the first meeting of the new year. We are looking for board members who are willing to be engaged and active. It’s a three-year commitment of attending a 2-hour monthly meeting in addition to a mandatory half-day retreat.

Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee is diligently planning its next event, which will focus on making disabilities inclusion a priority. We are excited to welcome Judy Heumann, an internationally recognized disabilities advocate and leader in the disability community. Judy has been featured in the award-winning documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution”, TED talks, was one of Time’s 100 Women of the Year, and is a published author. Mark your calendars for July 26th, this

Even more importantly, we need representation from ALL of our Chamber membership, whether they are small business owners or CEOs of our largest employers. The Chamber has long been a voice for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, which needs to be reflected in our board leadership. That includes a diversity of thought, so we need members who are open to sharing their ideas,

even when they seem to go against the majority.

is a speaker you will not want to miss! While it’s hard to believe we are at the halfway mark for 2021, we are already planning for the future and how committees and Chamber staff can work more efficiently to create great results for business. The Chandler Chamber continues to be an advocate for the business community and all members it represents.

We hope you’ll be inspired to apply HERE. If you aren’t quite ready yet, please consider joining or leading one of the many committees available at the Chamber. Those committees are a great entryway into board leadership, which in turn offers an experience as valuable to you, as your generous gift of time is to the Chamber.

Finally, we are planning for one of our Signature events – the Chandler 100! The Chandler 100 event has traditionally been one of our most well-attended programs as it honors Chandler’s largest employers. Keep an eye out for more information on this event to come.

On another note, the ASU Chandler Innovation Center is launching their co-working space and second part of the Embark Entrepreneurial Series on Wednesday, August 23rd at 9:30 AM. As the ASU Office of Government & Community Engagement Executive Director, I hope you will join us to celebrate the unveiling of this updated space.

Chandler Higher Education

By: Mayor Kevin

Students from kindergarten to college are back in class this year to continue their education journeys. Chandler is home to some of the best schools in the state, providing a place where residents have access to a variety of learning options. This is a tremendous benefit and key selling point when attracting new businesses.

Chandler also has a highly educated population that is already here, which is another key benefit to doing business in our city. As of 2021, 47% of Chandler residents hold a bachelor’s degree. That number is more than 15% higher than the statewide average and is a testament to the incredible talent in our own backyard.

Several higher education schools are investing in Chandler to continue to fuel the workforce with talented employees. The University of Arizona recently opened a new, 14,000 square foot facility, opening more doors to educate our residents. Grand Canyon University has expanded its footprint in Chandler as well, opening a facility that will teach the community’s next generation of nurses. And earlier this year, the City began a new partnership with Chandler-Gilbert Community College to provide paid internships to students to introduce them to city government opportunities. These partnerships, and our city’s educational successes, do not happen by accident. The City Council, City staff and I remain intently focused on attracting and nurturing these types of partnerships and educational opportunities. They feed our talented pool of residents, which ultimately leads to more new businesses and a higher quality of life for residents.

Meet the Chamber Team

Welcome Carly Wakefield to the Chandler Chamber team as the Vice President of Workforce Development and Government Relations. This new role is to further develop a workforce development program to identify the hiring, training, and workforce needs of the Chandler business community and align these needs with educational partners, employers, and employees.

Terri Kimble, President/CEO of the Chandler Chamber said, “We are very excited about Wakefield joining our team. With her expertise and experience, we are confident in her ability to advocate for policies and develop programs that continue to build a supportive business ecosystem.”

“This newly created position will further our mission of supporting the Chandler business community by advocating for government policy and providing workforce development programs”, expressed Warde Nichols, Chandler Chamber Board Chair and Executive Director of the Office of Government and Community Engagement at Arizona State University.

Carly Wakefield

Wakefield commented, “I’m eager to bring my unique experience and knowledge to the Chandler business community. As an East Valley native, I’m excited to serve my community and advocate for effective conversations and outcomes.”

Prior to joining the Chamber, Wakefield served as a Policy Advisor at the Arizona State Senate and the Director of State Relations at Dorn Policy Group, Inc. Wakefield served as a Policy Advisor at the Arizona State Senate for both the Education Committee and Commerce Committee. She received her Masters of Science in Political Science with a focus in International Relations from the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Is Threads Right for Your Business?

Meta does it again. We have yet another social media platform to consider. and it’s taking aim at Twitter.

Note: at the time of this writing, members of the EU cannot join because it is blocked currently owing to privacy questions.

What Is Threads?

Threads allows you to log in with your Instagram username. You have the option of importing from Instagram or creating a new bio from scratch. Just like Instagram, you can make your profile public or private. (For business, private isn’t going to do you much good.)

When you join, you’ll be asked if you want to follow the same accounts you follow on Instagram (even if these people haven’t signed up yet). It uses your Instagram information to personalize ads and other experiences across the two platforms. As you would expect, you must agree to the terms and privacy policy on your data/ data sharing, etc. Etc. One important thing to note in the Supplemental Privacy Policy, “You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”

The User Stats

At most recent counts, Instagram boasts 2 billion users while Twitter has only 250 million. If only a fraction of Instagram users sign up, Threads will quickly outpace Twitter. But it remains to be seen if the

same communities on Twitter will switch to Threads. Twitter is big in the sports recruiting arena as well as the publishing pitch world.

What’s New with Threads?

Like most new platforms, it looks vaguely familiar but with slightly different functionality. The format is a lot like Twitter, but it allows for longer posts. Most Twitter users have a 280-character limit, while Threads users can enjoy 500 characters and the ability to upload a five-minute video.

According to Meta, Threads was developed with features that “promote positive and productive discussions.” Users can manage who can mention or reply to them on the platform. Like Instagram, Thread users can utilize hidden word filters to exclude replies containing specific words from their threads. Managing profiles on Threads uses familiar activities such as unfollowing, blocking, restricting, or reporting through the three-dot menu. Additionally, any accounts blocked on Instagram will automatically be blocked on Threads as well.

Currently, Threads is accessible on both iOS and Android devices, and users can download the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Will you explore Threads for your business?

Chandler Residents Have Big Vocabulary

In the Webster’s Third New International Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, there are 470,000 words combined. However, only 170,000 words are frequently used. Americans speak between 7,000 to 20,000 words. 24/7 Tempo reviewed a report by LetterSolver and they analyzed geotagged tweets in English, divided all words into samples of 1,000, calculated the mean number of unique words per

city, then narrowed the list down to 35 U.S. Cities where residents have the widest array of vocabulary.

Chandler ranked #24 with a unique word count of 461.2 words for every 1,000 words spoken.

Marketing is the activity or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

Communication is usually defined as the transmission of information.

Public relations is the practice of managing and disseminating information from an individual or an organization to the public to influence their perception. Public relations and publicity differ in that PR is controlled internally, whereas publicity is not controlled and contributed by external parties.

While each category above has a different definition, all three play a vital role in telling the story and controlling the narrative of your business/organization. Additionally, it typically takes ten positive stories to negate every negative story. Positive press is invaluable.

Here are some quick tips to begin the process of telling your own story:

1. Create social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram are a great place to start) and post positive content regularly.

2. Digital advertising on Facebook is very cost effective and a suitable place to begin an advertisement campaign with a call to action (CTA).

3. Identify the audience you are trying to reach and determine what publications/outlets that audience consumes. Advertise there.

4. If you have a story that is visual and has a call to action that applies to a general audience, consider sending information to local news channels to cover. Every news outlet has an assignment desk that has a generic email for story ideas. Visit their website to find general contact information.

5. Stay on top of trends in your industry. If your company/organization is doing something in line with a local/national trend, it typically makes for a relevant story.

6. Collect testimonials from your customers and share them on social media, your website, and newsletter (if you have one).

7. Storytelling is a powerful communication tool. People connect to stories. By continuously sharing positive stories and information about your business/ organization, you can recruit and retain customers. Begin your storytelling journey today!

Seton Catholic Breaks Ground On Air Conditioning Project

Seton Catholic Prep has begun construction on a new air conditioning project for McMahon Gymnasium as part of their larger efforts to build a brand-new Event Center on campus. The Event Center will feature a new gymnasium/event center space for sports and extracurricular activities, added classrooms, and adequate space for celebrations and civic engagement.

This summer’s construction, which has already begun, will include the expansion of the mechanical yard, installation of an HVAC unit, the addition of chiller lines from the mechanical yard to the gym and the addition of other infrastructure that will be needed for the larger Event Center project. Expected completion is in early August.

Funding for the project has come from generous donations to the Founded in Faith – Building on Excellence capital campaign. Additionally, Seton Catholic is the recipient of a $132,500 Youth and Amateur Sports Grant from the Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority for the air conditioning unit.

“Part of the vision for Seton Catholic includes what our facilities and grounds will look like in 2027 when we celebrate 70 years. The community response has been great with over $5 million in grants and donations over the past three years to modernize our campus through various improvement projects. Adding air conditioning to McMahon Gym supports this vision and we are all excited to start the next school year with this becoming a reality by the first day of classes in August.” Victor Serna, principal, said.

AvAir Award

Jared Knights, director of quality assurance at AvAir, has received the prestigious Edward J. Glueckler award from the Aviation Suppliers Association (ASA). Each year, the Edward J. Glueckler Award is given to an individual in recognition of outstanding commitment, dedication and contribution to the Aviation Suppliers Association and to the aviation industry.

Congratulations Jared, on your achievement! Thank you for all you do at AvAir and for our community.

Aviation is a major part of Chandler’s history. In fact, Dr. A.J. Chandler envisioned the city having an airport when he founded our community. He would be impressed to know that his vision for an airport ended up as one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country.

SUGAR BAR

The Sugar Bar loves fun with beer & wine! Their mission was to take taproom experience & make it fun for everyone. And the owners, Zabdi and Kyle Hess, did just that. They have tried over 500 breweries and 5,000 beers throughout the years.

Surprisingly, candy pairs great with a lot of the beers they serve. They have served a Skittles sour, Sour Patch Kids sour, Blue Jolly Rancher Seltzer, Gummy Shark IPA & Pink Starburst seltzer. Other pairings we have done include Mango Cart Wheat Ale with Spicy mango gummies, Orange Creamsicle cream ale with an actual creamsicle pop, & a Peanut Butter Milk Stout paired with a chocolate & peanut butter candy rim & Reese’s on the side. If those options, aren’t your taste, they also offer candy flights for wine, seltzers, and ciders.

La Ristra New Mexican Kitchen Celebrates 10 Year!

La Ristra serves authentic New Mexican Cuisine cooked with recipes passed down from generation to generation. They are a family owned and operated business that started so families could come together and celebrate their ongoing legacies and connect with each other over hearty food and delicious drinks. Every Friday and Saturday evening, there is live music too.

Hatch chiles from Hatch Valley, New Mexico, are a staple in their dishes. Every fall, they travel back to New Mexico to purchase the finest green chiles and fiery reds. The name La Ristra comes from the Spanish word “Ristra”, which translates to “string” in English, and typically refers to an arrangement of drying chile pepper pods, garlic bulbs, or other vegetables for later consumption. Symbolically, ristras are a trademark of New Mexican decorative design.

La Ristra is located in the heart of Downtown Chandler.

The Chandler Chamber and the City of Chandler’s Economic Development Team recently met with Bestway Global CEO William Zhu and Bestway USA Chairman and CSO Pat Fumagalli to discuss the potential of future expansion of its operations in one of Arizona’s fastest growing cities.

The global recreational company moved its U.S. headquarters to Chandler in late 2021. Bestway (bestwayusa.com) is a leading design and manufacturing company of innovative indoor and outdoor recreational items such as inflatable outdoor mega water parks, stand-up paddleboards, kids’ bouncers, air mattresses, pools, floats and more.

Intel’s Ocotillo Campus Honored for Water Stewardship

The Arizona site earned Platinum certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship. Intel’s Ocotillo campus in Arizona earned Platinum level certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). Intel is the first semiconductor company in the United States to be AWS Certified and the second company in the country to earn the Platinum Certification, the highest level under this program. AWS is the only certification standard that focuses exclusively on water stewardship.

“Water is one of the most important ingredients in the semiconductor manufacturing process and a critical natural resource for the communities where we operate. That’s why Intel has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in innovative water conservation efforts, resulting in more than 3.3 billion gallons of water conserved in our Ocotillo operations in 2022. We are proud to have achieved one of the highest scored ever for AWS’ Platinum Level Certification across all regions and all industry sectors.” Keyvan Esfarjani, executive vice president, chief global operations officer and general manager of Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Operations at Intel Corporation

Intel has been manufacturing in Arizona for more than 40 years, and minimizing its environmental footprint is a longstanding priority. In addition to investing in water conservation in its operations, Intel also collaborates on water initiatives within the community. This has enabled the Arizona site to return and restore more than 100% of its Arizona freshwater use to the community and local watersheds, achieving net positive water in 2021 and 2022.

At the Ocotillo campus, Intel’s 12-acre on-site water reclamation facility can treat up to 9.1 million gallons of water each day. The facility enables Intel to reuse water within its on-site systems.
