A WHOLE NEW WONDERWORLD! AMBITIOUS proposals which will see the second floor of the Concourse Shopping Centre redeveloped to create a ten pin bowling alley, an indoor mini golf course and an amusements arcade with dodgems, have been validated by West Lancashire Borough Council.

News of the ‘WonderWorld’ scheme’s progression comes as West Lancs reopens again after lockdown and the Skelmersdale regeneration scheme forges ahead.

The plan for WonderWorld also includes an inflatable obstacle course with toddler play area; a bar, with recreational space and pub games; and an American style diner, in the coming weeks.

This complex would also include electronic darts, cocktail bar with performance stage, and a digital area with VR room and 4D cinema.

The proposals were first highlighted on the Champion’s Facebook page in February and came after it was announced that a two-screen cinema (Ultra Star Cinema) would be arriving at the shopping centre on the ground floor.

The council has said the WonderWorld scheme will “enhance the leisure offer” within Skelmersdale and the Borough as a whole and “go towards a key strategic aim of the Council” to “make Skelmersdale a leisure, recreational and retail centre of excellence within the North West.”

Diggers move in to herald start of regeneration work AS our pictures show, work has been pressing ahead on the new Skelmersdale town centre and its anchor stores Lidl and B&M Bargains.

Work got underway in the New Year and diggers have been clearing the way for building work to start.

The steel frames of the new retail units will begin to appear behind the wooden hoardings from late spring to early summer 2021.

At the end of last year, West Lancashire Borough Council stated the plan was that the development would be operational from Easter 2022.

The redevelopment scheme is a partnership between the Borough Council and developer St Modwen and has been supported by the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership.

Concourse is the ‘perfect space’ for our WonderWorld, says leisure boss Report by Henry James From page 1 The applicant has already “made arrangements with respective suppliers for the delivery of the proposed entertainment facilities” which include AMF Bowling, which has centres all over the country, and Airparx (inflatable obstacle course).

David Halliwell, director of Lancashire-based Moorgate Developments, said in February when the scheme was launched: “The key attractions we found provided us with the potential to develop the Concourse into a more diverse attraction that caters for people to have fun even when the weather is bad, and to meet the escapist needs of the entire family from toddlers to grandparents. It will be possible to spend all day in WonderWorld with friends and family and be entertained.”

The Ultra Star Cinema development is the town’s first cinema for 38 years. It is aimed to be an “affordable experience” with tickets averaging just £5. Each auditorium will contain 125 seats with comfortable, Italian high-back chairs and 1.5 metre spacing between rows. Asif Sahil, managing director of Ultra Star Cinema, has said: “This is our first cinema project and we want to get it right.

“We wanted to come to Skelmersdale because of the regeneration plans that are planned for the town and the Concourse Shopping Centre was the perfect space for what we envisaged.”

It is hoped the cinema will create up to 16 full-and part-time local jobs.

The Concourse’s second floor is mainly vacant and there was a single open space, once occupied by the market, which is now vacant. Many of the

remaining areas on the second floor were once used as storage areas for the units in the centre, but are also vacant. A number of retail units and community assets have closed at the centre over the last decade.

The WonderWorld application states that the proposed development is “unique” to the Skelmersdale area with the only similar facilities located in Wigan and Liverpool town/city centres.

This complex would be “the only one of its kind within the West Lancashire Borough” and would provide a boost to the local area in terms of community leisure facilities as well as financial investment and employment.

Alex Jaques, development director at St. Modwen, said: “All the partners have been working really hard on this project and we are very pleased that construction work is underway.”

The regeneration of Skelmersdale was given a further boost at the end of March after the council was awarded £285,000 of funding from the Lancashire Economic Recovery and Growth Fund.

AN actor from Skelmersdale is the star of a new BBC Three drama series.

The Break, which returned to BBC Three for its fifth successful series, is a collaboration between BBC Studios, BBC Writersroom and BBC Three.

This year the series features Niamh Longford (right) who earned the lead role of May in The Break, fresh from graduating top of her class at the University of Central Lancashire.

Niamh started her training at Skelmersdale’s own West Lancashire College where she regularly performed to rave reviews - and earned a multitude of accolades for herself and the college, including ‘National Operatic and Dramatic Association’ awards for her work in Shakespeare.

Now Niamh is very quickly garnering herself a great reputation as an actor in the television industry.

By Henry James RAPID coronavirus testing is now available, as the county heads out of lockdown and looks towards its recovery.

The rapid testing kits, for people with no symptoms, are available to everyone in England, with people encouraged to test themselves twice a week.

Alongside the rollout of the vaccine, regular testing is at the heart of plans to reopen society and the economy, helping to suppress and control the spread of any possible variants.

Up to now, rapid tests, which differ from laboratory tests delivered via the NHS, have not been made widely available.

The main purpose of rapid coronavirus tests is to find people with the Covid-19 infection but no symptoms, in order for them to self-isolate and prevent them spreading the virus.

This means people should only take a rapid test – which usually show a result within 30 minutes – if you do not have any symptoms.

If individuals test positive for Covid-19 using a rapid test, they must begin to self-isolate and book a confirmatory test via the NHS as soon as possible.

This will help ensure that people do not need to self-isolate unnecessarily and help avoid any delays to their self-isolation. If individuals do have symptoms, they must begin to self-isolate immediately and book a test through the NHS. The three most common symptoms are a high temperature; a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, although a variety of other symptoms have been reported.

As well as being able to order rapid tests directly to their homes, residents can also take a rapid Covid test at numerous community sites across Lancashire, as well as via workplaces and the NHS. This means it is easier than ever to utilise this crucial tool in the fight against Covid-19.

Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, Lancashire’s director of Public Health said: “Testing regularly will help us reclaim a more normal way of life in Lancashire.

“Since rapid testing was introduced, more than 120,000 positive cases across England that would not have been found otherwise have been identified.

“By making rapid tests available to everyone, the ability to identify and control variants will be greatly increased.

“This in turn will help break the chains of transmission and save lives by supporting people to selfisolate and to trace their contacts.

“As we begin to return to some form of normality, we must do so by continuing to follow all of the updo-date Covid guidance. Hand hygiene remains crucial and maintaining distance from others and wearing face masks where appropriate is also key.

“By doing all of these things and coming forward for your vaccine when it is your turn, you can play your part in helping Lancashire on its road to recovery.”

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy has 28 years of policing experience behind her. She joined Merseyside Police as an Assistant Chief Constable in 2017 and was promoted to Deputy Chief Constable in October 2018.

She explained: “I joined Merseyside Police four years ago and I am incredibly proud to have been given the opportunity to lead the force and build on the strong foundations laid by my predecessors.

“Merseyside Police is the best performing force in the country and I am determined that the people of Merseyside continue to have a police service that puts them at the heart of everything it does.

“When I joined the police more than 27 years ago I never thought that one day I would be a Deputy Chief Constable, let alone a Chief Constable and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and working with the fantastic officers and staff who provide a professional, effective and efficient service to the communities of Merseyside on a daily basis.

DETECTIVES investigating a “horrific assault” in Skelmersdale have released an image of the man attacked as they continue to appeal for information.

Police were called at about 7.30am on Sunday, April 4 following a report a man had been found with serious injuries near Ferndale, Birch Green. The male had been making his way to work before being targeted.

Enquiries suggest the incident took place near to Firbeck.

The man, aged 37, was taken to Aintree Hospital and is now recovering at home.

An investigation was launched and enquiries are continuing to identify the offenders.

Detectives have arrested two people on suspicion of attempted murder.

WEST Lancashire Borough Council has opened an electronic book of condolence for residents to pay their respects to Prince Philip.

The Queen’s husband, who had been a main figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, died on Friday, April 9 aged 99.

His ceremonial royal funeral will be held at St George's Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, at 3pm on Saturday, April 17.

Parbold Hill campaign group press for rethink on landfill decision CAMPAIGNERS claim they have forced Lancashire County Council to listen to residents and professional advice and ‘think again’ before allowing landfill to begin at Parbold Hill.

Stop Parbold Hill Landfill (SPHL) were able to secure the services of QC David Forsdick thanks to donations from local Parish Councils and residents.

The QC is critical of the county council’s decisions and has written a report on the matter.

A spokesperson for Stop Parbold Hill Landfill commented: “Had this not been the case then 120,000 tonnes would have been transported in 11,000 HGVs to be deposited on the hilltop and the panoramic views would have been lost forever.”

Lancashire County Council’s Development Control Committee was resolved to grant permission despite more than 1,000 objections from local residents, six Parish Councils and West Lancashire Borough Council.

David Forsdick QC considered the Council’s procedures in reaching the decision. His report concluded: “I consider that there are multiple inconsistencies, inaccuracies, misunderstandings and misconceptions underlying the resolution to grant – and a clear failure to test propositions of fact put forward by the Applicant but which appear to be unsustainable and/or misconceived.

“The Council thus has an opportunity now to reconsider on a correct, factual, legal and technical understanding. I have no hesitation in recommending that they should do so.”

QC Forsdick went on to criticise LCC planners’ acceptance, without evidence, of the need to import this huge quantity of waste which will “destroy the views from the hill and create the need for the disastrous new entrance”.

Concerned about the safety aspects of the proposed new access near the brow of the hill, the planning committee asked for consideration of traffic lights. Local businessman Mike Pickering who drives over the hill every day commented: “14,000 vehicles a day use the road over the Hill, ima-

The Planning Committee concluded that the proposed works should be allowed, in order to prevent pollution of the River Douglas and surrounding area. But the QC found that: “There is no evidence whatsoever (even after 30 years and despite regular monitoring) of any harm to surface water in particular the river.”

He noted: “It is difficult to understand how major works in the Green Belt are necessary to address potential pollution when after 30 years there is no evidence of such pollution – this basic point was not addressed by the Council.”

A spokesperson for Stop Parbold Hill Landfill said: “Lancashire County Council has now listened, stopped the current application and asked the applicant (Maybrook Developments) to work with the Environment Agency to minimise its most harmful and controversial aspects. We hope this will eventually lead to the Council’s reconsideration of a more acceptable, less destructive scheme for repair and maintenance at Parbold Hill.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “The county council has considered the advice that has been obtained by the action group. Whilst the county council does not accept many of the issues raised, it has nevertheless asked the applicant to progress a permit application with the Environment Agency.

“This is a step that has to take place anyway, and it will allow many of the questions raised by the action group to be further investigated, providing an opportunity for the scale and justification for the proposals to be further assessed by the agency.

“After the Environment Agency has determined the permit application, a further report on the planning application will be considered by the county council's Development Control Committee.”

Domestic cleaning firm hits 25 year anniversary ORMSKIRK business owner, Chris Wootton, celebrated a huge milestone when his domestic cleaning business ‘Poppies’ reached its 25-year anniversary.

Having launched on April 1, 1996, Chris has grown the business and his team of staff, who now deliver more than 2,500 hours of cleaning every month to homes across West Lancashire.

Borough MP Rosie Cooper joined Chris at the Poppies office in Burscough Street to mark the occasion, along with some special members of Poppies staff who have worked in the business for more than 20 years.

A CHARITY based in West Lancashire is inviting its supporters to take part in a national fundraising event to celebrate the achievements of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Following the outpouring of heartfelt messages since the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore on February 2, his family has pledged to celebrate his life with an event that everyone, in the UK and around the world, can be involved in.

That event is the Captain Tom 100 and the Natalie Kate Moss Trust, based in Parbold, is pleased to be involved.

The charity was set up in 2012 by the Moss family after Natalie’s death at the age of 26 following a sudden brain haemorrhage.

Focusing on turning this tragedy into something positive, the trust supports ground-breaking research into the prevention and treatment of brain haemorrhages to stop more tragedies occurring.

Like many other charities, it has been hugely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Captain Tom 100 offers Natalie Kate Moss Trust supporters, of all ages and abilities, the opportunity to raise crucial funds for the charity, while at the same time celebrating Captain Tom’s generosity of spirit, the hope and joy he brought to millions, and his sense of fun.

All participants need to do is dream up a Captain Tom 100 challenge based around the number 100 and do it at anytime and anywhere over Captain Tom’s birthday weekend – starting on Friday, April 30 through to Bank Holiday Monday, May 3.

The challenge could be walking 100 steps or running 100 metres, scoring 100 goals, baking 100 cakes, climbing 100 stairs, hopping 100 laps of the garden, building 100 sandcastles, writing a 100word poem, flipping 100 pancakes – anything at all, inside or out.

Once supporters have chosen their challenge, they can fundraise or donate to the Natalie Kate Moss Trust and share their 100 on social media, using #CaptainTom100.

Captain Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, said: “We are so grateful for the incredible support we have received since my father started his recordbreaking fundraising walk and that his message of hope was shared with the world.

behind the growing legacy of his Foundation.

Charity launches campaign tackling loneliness in Lancs LEAVE Loneliness Behind, is a new campaign that Age UK Lancashire have launched highlighting the link between loneliness and mental health issues and how this can have a drastic effect on a person’s wellbeing.

It is estimated that 4.2 million people in the UK are likely to be affected by a combination of depression and anxiety.

Loneliness can lead to anxiety and depression and right here on our doorstep in Lancashire there are estimated to be 35,000 lonely older people (aged 65+) who have little or no contact with anyone.

Age UK Lancashire are reaching out to local older people who are feeling lonely or are struggling with their mental health and providing support and solutions to help.

Teri Stephenson, chief executive at the charity said: “Being aware of our own mental health has really come to the forefront over the last 12 months, and we know the negative impact it can have on everyday life.

“For many of our older population, having no one to talk to is a very sad reality and we want to change that.”

The charity are striving to give everyone the opportunity to live their best later life and want to promote change by raising awareness of the impact loneliness has on mental health and trying to reach out to people who many feel they have no one to turn to for support.

Teri Stephenson added: “This campaign is really

important to us and we hope it can highlight some of the support we can provide, either through helping people with money matters and welfare benefits, providing opportunities to socialise, or reconnect with friends and family.

“We really are here to support older people from any background and be their safety net.”

The charity is calling on local people to get behind their latest campaign by raising funds or donating to help them to provide their services.

Teri Stephenson said: “We know it’s been a really challenging year for everyone, due to the pandemic, but we need to look to the future and how we can help more people and stop them from falling through the gaps. If you or anyone you know can make a donation or get involved with our fundraising events, then we would be so grateful.

The money goes directly to supporting our services and does make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Government to wheel out £18m for cycle training TRANSPORT Secretary Grant Shapps has announced £18m for cycle training across the country to ensure children and their families have the confidence to choose active travel, as the Government encourages people to walk or cycle where possible.

The funding, which is managed by The Bikeability Trust charity, will go toward delivering high-quality, practical, on-road cycle training as a modern day equivalent of the ‘Cycling Proficiency’ scheme many parents will themselves have undertaken during their school days.

Bikeability goes beyond the playground, teaching children to cycle safely on modern roads. At different levels, children learn to: l Develop early cycle handling and awareness skills (Bikeability Balance) l Master pedalling (Bikeability Learn to Ride) l Prepare for on-road cycling (Level 1) l Cycle on single-lane roads and simple junctions (Level 2) l Handle busier streets, complex junctions and roundabouts (Level 3) For families looking to improve their confidence cycling together, local authorities can offer bespoke Bikeability Family training sessions with an instructor, to help them feel confident in a range of scenarios, from a weekend ride to commuting and taking the children to school. This investment will help ensure children are road-ready on their bikes as schools and families prepare for the summer

term. Physical activity like walking and cycling is proven to have numerous benefits, both in terms of fitness, wellbeing and attentiveness in school, and research into Bikeability cycle training specifically also shows that, after taking part, parents were more likely to feel confident in allowing their child to cycle independently.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Cycling is a fun and healthy way for pupils to get to school, and we want as many as possible to make it their choice of transport. With social distancing still a necessity, the more people who walk or cycle, the more we can ease pressure on public transport as people return to normal life.

“But we know not all children, or parents, feel bike-confident. Today’s funding will kick-start our plans to provide Bikeability training to all children by 2025, giving the next generation of cyclists a life-skill and the confidence they need to choose a more active way to travel.”

Emily Cherry, executive director, Bikeability Trust said: “The commitment of Government to fund Bikeability in this next year is hugely welcomed as we seek to ensure that every child can access cycling as a life skill by 2025.

County moves into ‘recovery phase’ ... as multi-agency partnership takes a ‘‘significant step’

By Henry James AS the county moves into the recovery phase of the pandemic, the Lancashire Resilience Forum (LRF) – a multi-agency partnership leading the area’s response to Covid-19 – has taken a ‘significant’ step.

The LRF is made up of various representatives from local public services, including the emergency services, local authorities and the NHS. As lockdown restrictions ease across the county, the LRF is to formally move from its emergency response to a recovery phase.

As part of the change, Angie Ridgwell, chief executive of Lancashire County Council, will stand down as chair of the LRF, handing the reins to Denise Park, chief executive of Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Angie said: “The decision to stand down the emergency response to Covid and formally move to a recovery phase reflects the monumental efforts of all Lancashire residents, businesses and partners to suppress the virus by following the guidance, respecting the restrictions and getting vaccinated when called.

“It has been a huge privilege to chair the Lancashire Resilience Forum during this difficult time, which has truly brought out the best of people.

“I would like to thank all of our residents for playing their part, as well as our LRF partners for their support during these extraordinary times. I know Denise Park will continue this important work as Lancashire looks ahead to a post-pandemic future.”

As part of the move, the LRF's Strategic Coordinating Group will pass the mantle to the Recovery Coordination Group.

This new group will ensure partners continue to work together using common intelligence and respond to any issues that materialise in respect of the pandemic.

Denise Park said: “While there will undoubtedly be many challenges in the months ahead, there is much to be hopeful for as we look towards the future.

While we consider that it is the right time to move from response to recovery, the situation remains extremely serious.

“It’s therefore crucial that people continue to follow the rules, especially as restrictions start to ease across the county and help avoid another surge in cases.

“The positive partnership working that has gone on throughout the pandemic will continue in the new arrangements as the pandemic has shown ups that Lancashire is at its best when we all work together.”

DESPITE lockdown restrictions St Richard’s Primary School in Skelmersdale has received a LiveSimply award for its efforts to reduce waste, recycle and improve the environment both close to home and around the world.

Championed by overseas development charity CAFOD, the award was presented to pupils earlier this year.

St Richard’s Primary School implemented a number of exceptional projects that highlighted the importance of caring for creation and community, including making strong links with the local neighborhood, providing food hampers and delivering cards.

Justine Silcock, a LiveSimply Assessor from CAFOD, said. “Living simply made the school look at things a little differently. Pupils and staff planted flowers and seeds in their garden to attract the bees, and recycled milk containers into

TEAMS at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) are celebrating 20 years of running their Prince’s Trust Team programmes across multiple locations across the county.

The programmes were first launched on 1 April 2001 and have had more than 6,000 young people through their doors.

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a twelveweek course delivered by staff from LFRS in affiliation with The Prince’s Trust charity.

It is a free programme for any employed or unemployed young people aged between 16-25 aimed to improve confidence, motivation and help young

people learn new skills.

The programme includes work experience, careers advice, qualifications, challenging projects, community action projects and an action-packed team building week-long residential.

Alongside all of this, young people also gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Chief Fire Officer, Justin Johnston, said: “It is a fantastic accolade that Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have been able to deliver these programmes consistently for twenty years no doubt shaping and improving the lives of so many young people during that time.

“Peter Holland, who was Chief Fire Officer of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service back in 2001, made the right decision to

More council houses are to be built in Skelmersdale

building affordable new homes.

The Council is the only shareholder and any financial surplus made by Tawd Valley Developments will be returned to the authority to be reinvested in the local community.

When completed, the new Council homes will be available for rent and will be owned and managed by West Lancashire Borough Council.

Ross Litherland, Interim Managing Director at Tawd Valley Developments, said: “This is fabulous news as it helps support the development programme of Tawd Valley and in doing so will provide high quality new homes for rent in Skelmersdale.

The bid was made to Homes England, the Government's housing accelerator, and will support the development of 30 council homes across two sites in Skelmersdale through the council’s development company, Tawd Valley Developments.

Police recover stolen car in town SKELMERSDALE Police’s Immediate Response and Neighbourhood Task Force were busy after this vehicle (right) failed to stop.

The vehicle was initially seen by an eagle- eyed member of the public who contacted police to say they had seen it being driven dangerously in the Skelmersdale area recently.

PC Waite spotted the vehicle on Dig-

moor Road, and it was then pursued by the police’s Team 2 Immediate Response and Neighbourhood Task Force. The occupants abandoned the vehicle on Bearncroft and made off from the area on foot.

The vehicle was stolen from a burglary in the Greater Manchester area, and was being driven on cloned registration plates.

It has been forensically recovered and will be examined to try and establish any linked offenders.

A spokesman for Skelmersdale Police said: “If you see anything suspicious or something which doesn’t feel right, please contact us on 101 or 999 in an emergency. We are committed to tackling criminality and those involved in it.”

Bingo hall and casino in resort close down

MP hits out at Sefton Council for failing to respond to her letter

TIME has been called on Southport’s Mecca Bingo and Genting Casino, which have both fallen foul of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mecca Bingo bosses confirmed they have four venues closing due to lease expiries - with the future now uncertain for the former Garrick Theatre Grade II listed building off Lord Street.

John Dyson, operations director at Mecca Bingo, which has 77 clubs, said: “On behalf of everyone at Mecca Bingo in Southport, we are very sad to confirm that we will not be reopening our club in May and will be closing permanently.

“Mecca Southport has been a part of the local community for many years and we want to say a huge thank you to every single one of our incredible customers for their loyalty and support – we will miss you very much.

“Mecca plays a very special part in the community and has done for 60 years, bringing people together in our clubs and online. We wish all of our colleagues and customers well for the future.”

Meanwhile, the pandemic has forced Genting UK to close four of its casinos - including the one on the Waterfront Promenade in Southport - and reduce its workforce at its operations across the UK. A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close Genting Casino Southport as a result of the pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic to the business over the last year. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their loyalty and our staff for all their hard work. Customer memberships, points and benefits will still be valid at any of our other casinos across the UK.”

NEIGHBOURING Sefton Council has been criticised by West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper who has expressed frustration at the “unresponsiveness” of the authority to her correspondence.

In this case, she says, Sefton Council have not responded – despite numerous attempts to secure a response – to a letter of December 16, 2020.

The MP commented: “In my capacity as West Lancashire MP I very often have cause to contact neighbouring councils like Sefton on behalf of my constituents.

“In this case, in December last year I wrote to the Chief Executive of Sefton Council regarding the interment of ashes at Southport Crematorium, on behalf of a constituent who had lost her husband.

“I am very concerned that neither the Chief Executive of Sefton Council, nor any of his staff, have acknowledged or responded to my letter of December 16, or my follow-up letter of March 12.

“To ably serve my constituents, I must be able to reliably secure responses from the agencies they ask me to contact.

“I hope that this press release helps me to secure a response and that no such public measure is necessary in future instances.”

Sefton Council stated that during the pre-election period they can’t provide comments on political stories.

Admit it – you probably put on a few pounds during lockdown Toyota is replaing its GT86 with this new GR 86 model

GO ON, it’s okay to admit it – you probably put on a few pounds during lockdown.

With the gym being shut, the weather not being especially nice out and a seemingly infinite array of options for bingeing through your favourite TV shows a few button presses away, I can hardly blame you.

The same normally applies to cars too, even when there isn’t a pandemic on.

Pick almost any car you can think of and it’ll almost certainly be heavier, chunkier around the waistline and less able to pull off a nightclub visit without being accused of daddancing than it was a decade or so ago.

That’s largely our fault – we demand that our cars are safer, quieter and more secure than they used to, so inevitably they end up looking a bit middle-aged, to the point that watching them attempt the Macarena is beyond cringe-worthy.

But not if you’re an entry-level Toyota coupé. You can be forgiven for not noticing that the GT86 quietly disappeared from the Japanese carmaker’s UK showrooms back in February, as it’s been on sale since 2012 and barely changed in nine years, but it’s emerged from lockdown having spent six hours a day pounding the treadmill and lifting weights.

The new model is not only faster and more powerful than the two-door it replaces, but it’s actually lighter too.

It’s been renamed GR 86 so that it slots in

neatly alongside the excellent GR Yaris and GR Supra, but the big news is that its Subaruderived flat-four engine is now a 2.4-litre unit rather than the two-litre unit of the old car and for all the dieting the new arrival is 50 per cent stiffer than the old GT86, thanks largely to using aluminium rather than steel for the roof and much of the body panels.

All of which leaves me with a grin normally associated with Cheshire’s feline residents.

One of the best things about the GT86 was how immediate its steering and suspension felt, particularly as it wasn’t overendowed with fat tyres in a quest for grip that the car

didn’t really need, and I’m optimistic that the GR 86 should be even better. It is, in the industry ’s headlong rush for electric everything, a wonderfully old-school way to rip along the asphalt, but I think in a world that’s been confined by doom, gloom and lockdowns for more than a year, there are plenty of people who want a car that tickles their tastebuds rather than merely filling them up.

It’s a fleeting fancy for those who don’t mind living in the petrol age for a little longer, but while such cars are still allowed I’m glad that Toyota’s still prepared to make

one, and make it lighter, faster and better in the bends than the one that came before it.

In fact, the only real letdown is that Subaru’s version of the same car, the BRZ, is no longer coming to these shores.

That and the fact that really, to do the GR 86 justice, I too ought to be lighter and more agile than I was pre-lockdown when I get behind the wheel. Remind me, when are the gyms re-opening?

Thieves steal sea cadets’ minibus from their Sefton headquarters A minibus has been stolen from Sefton Sea Cadets, which they say will affect their support for local young people.

Sefton Sea Cadets is a youth charity based in Field Lane, Litherland.

They train, mentor and support more than 70 young people to enable them to access outdoor education, vocational qualifications, be part of a team and learn key life skills such as leadership, teamwork and citizenship.

With a large Unit, they rely heavily on their minibuses to enable the transportation of Cadets to activities, training and trips.

Sometime between 2pm on Sunday, March 7 and 10am on Monday, March 8, the Unit HQ in Field Lane was broken into, causing damage to the security gates. Once inside the com-

pound, thieves broke into the minibus, removed the ignition to start the engine and they then stole the vehicle.

A spokesperson said: “This bus was purchased through charitable donations and from the Cadets’ bag packing and fundraising.

“The theft of this bus will mean that a lot of our young people, who are looking forward to getting back to the Unit and seeing their friends, will not be able to take part in any training opportunities requiring travel.

“Sefton Sea Cadets, in L21, is a vital and vibrant part of the community and we would appeal to anyone who has information about the whereabouts of the bus, or would like to make a donation, to please engage with us on social media.”

They hope to raise £5,000 to replace the minibus.
