THE borough’s MP Rosie Cooper has once again had to raise concerns with United Util ities, after residents reported a return of the dreaded ‘Parbold Pong’. People living in Parbold and the surround ing area have repeatedly had to deal with this unpleasant smell coming from the nearby Wigan Waste Water Treatment Works site.Inthe past, Ms Cooper has held many meetings, worked with residents and United Utilities to find ways that the water com pany can keep the smell to a minimum or warn nearby residents when an unavoidable smell is likely to occur. This month, however, residents reported a ‘significant odour ’ but received no prior notice from United Utilities. After they con tacted the company ’s chief executive, UU then issued an apology for not warning them of the routine cleaning works that caused the smell and ‘are now working to improve the situation’ Rosie Cooper MP commented: “No one wants to have their day ruined by a foul smell surrounding their home. Without an early warning system ‘Parbold Pong’ causes even more problems for residents.

Olly Byrne is to start this month at the highlyregarded Neosho Community College in Kansas. Olly, who trains with 7 Elite Academy in Liver pool, said: “Anthony Godfrey, who is the 7 Elite Academy technical director, pulled me and a few of the other lads into the office at college.

“We thought we were in trouble at first! But when he told us what we would be doing over the next six months, it was a real mix of emo tions. We were all made up of course, but also nervous about what was coming up.”

It was the start of a remarkable six months, that would include intense coaching, tourna ments and university visits. Olly said: “In total I did five trips that included multiple cities and states such as Salt Lake City, Florida, North Carolina, Las Vegas, St George, Richmond and Nevada. The other lads did a similar number.

Once back home Olly soon learned the good news that he had been offered a scholarship at Neosho.Ollynow lives in the town of Chanute, while studying over the next two years. If all the con ditions are met, he will have the option of playing and studying in the United States for a further two years.

WILDFOWL & Wetlands Trust Martin Mere Wetland Centre, the nature reserve in Burscough, has received the green light to allow visitors to hand feed birds again. It comes after almost a year of hand feeding being taken off the list of activ ities at the centre, following Government guidelines and to protect the captive collection from the spread of avian flu. RESIDENTS, volunteers and many organisa tions across the county have been thanked for their part in helping the people of Ukraine, as Lancashire welcomes its 1,000th arrival. Over the past six months, hundreds of indi vidual and families fleeing Ukraine following the invasion of Russia have begun a new life in Lancashire via the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Lancashire Refugee Integration Team and Lancashire Resilience Forum are coordinating the county-wide response, which also includes accessing healthcare, welfare and schools.Atotal of 541 sponsors in Lancashire have been matched with 1,342 people via the scheme and 1,002 people have arrived in the county so far. It comes as the people of Ukraine prepare to celebrate the Independence Day of Ukraine today (August 24) - six months to the day from Russia’s invasion. Could I through your paper ask the residents at three of the houses liv ing at the corner of Long Lane and Prescot Road in Aughton if they would cut back the bushes that are obscuring the traffic lights there. Some are only visible when you are almost at the junction and drivers really need all the help they can be given to approach the lights safely, especially as many cars approach the cross roads too fast.

After the recent news that Barclays Bank is set to shut its Ormskirk branch which is not long after they closed my local branch in Skelmersdale, I would urge every Barclays customer in our region to contact the bank them selves to complain about theWeclosures.willall need in branch services at some stage of our lives and we have a large pensioner population who rely on the branch who either can’t or don’t want to use on-line banking.

I was very concerned at the onesided article on the Arriva bus driversArrivastrike.aremaking loads of profits (which goes back to its German own ers by the way). The drivers have not had a pay rise for three years and it wasn’t long ago that we were applauding them, together with NHS staff, as key work ers keeping our country going during theThepandemic.Arrivastatement that unions were not allowing their members to vote on a renewed offer was not questioned, it was just printed as if it was a press release. The ‘renewed offer ’ was exactly the same as the original offer, which was rejected by union members. I sympathise with people who are suffering with the disruption of bus services.But,Arriva are making enough profits to afford to make a better offer to their drivers. I wouldn’t like to drive a bus, with no toilet facilities and the prospect of trouble making passengers. We should all stand in solidarity with the drivers and put the blame fairly with Arriva for this dispute.

She worked as a speech and language therapist in Pontville Special School and The Ormskirk Health Centre, a job that she loved. She married Frank Landers and together they had four children: Michael, Donal, Aideen and Sean, and eight grandchildren. She will be much missed. She brought joy (and often home-baked goodies) to the people in her life, and loved to dole out treats and kindnesses to her friends and relatives. She always put other people’s needs ahead of her own, and she saw the best in everyone. She left a strong impact on the people she met, and she will be sorely missed. Her strong Christian faith sustained her to the end.

A pre-invited cast of cars will be agged o at one-minute intervals from the Southport O shore Rescue Trust centre enroute to the area where the pier threads its way through the Ocean Plaza, and while it will be worth watching it won’t be competitive.

It’s e ectively a test bed for 2023’s followup event, and Aintree Circuit Club is already talking to the relevant people at Se on Council about how the seafront can be turned into a sprint course this time next year. at’d be really exciting to watch, and it has some historical precedent too; long before the Coastal Road was built, this stretch of road was used for exactly that purpose, so it’s a neat way of bringing some of the north west’s motoring heritage back to life. Of course, even without the seafront demonstration runs there’s plenty to make it worth jotting in your diary, including all of the elements that stood out from the event’s maiden voyage. So that means lots of cars and bikes going on show in Victoria Park, and the chance to see a copious cast of classics being put through their paces along the Promenade and Lord Street.
