YOUNGSTERS from a local youth project have been praised for their efforts raising funds for Ukrainian refugees. The National Citizenship Service group is a four-week programme for 15-17 year olds allowing them to engage in personal development and their local community. They held a recent sponsored walk along Crosby beach to raise funds for the Ukrainian Refugee Donation Centre based at Blundellsands Methodist Church. Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson was invited to meet with the group. He said: “I was really impressed when I met the NCS group.“Itisfantastic to see young people in Crosby getting involved, making a differ ence and helping Ukrainian refugees in their hour of need. FIVE men from Maghull have been jailed for their role in a plot by an organised crime group to pro duceand supplydrugs acrossthecountry on“an industrial scale.” They were amongnine members of thegang who have been jailed for a total of over 187 years. The groupused aunit atan Aintreeindustrial site to store chemicals and equipment for amphetamine productionas partof aplotto supply£6million worth of Class A and B drugs betweenApril andJune 2020.Itwas uncoveredfollowinga jointinvestigation between Merseyside Police and North Wales Police. Twoof thegroup werealsopart ofa conspiracyto possess and supply prohibited firearms. The evidence was unearthedas part of an Encrochat enquiry, with evidence linking the group to premisesnear the North Walesborder near Chesterand evidenceof ClassA andB drugdealing around the Maghull area. TheNorth Walesinvestigation wasfocused upona drugs labused toproduce amphetamineon amultimillion-pound commercialscale andto produce other Class B drugs. It also emerged that the group were produ cing amphetamine for intravenous use making it a Class A controlled drug instead of its normal Class B classification. Loan sharks often use social media platforms to advertise illegal loans and target poten tialHowevervictims.,seemingly attract ive loans can quickly end in intimidation, threats and viol ence to enforce repayment and borrowers trapped in a spiral ofCllrdebt.Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “People across our bor ough are being faced with soaring costs. At times like this we tend to see an upsurge in the activities of loan sharks preying on the vulnerable. “They make it sound like they want to help but they do not have their victims’ best interests at heart. In fact, they are actively looking to trap struggling families into skyrocketing debts backed up with threats, intimidation and violence as they demand pay ment. One of Plus Dane’s Neighbourhoods Team, Steven Horton, is also a local historian. He researched the area’s historic maps and old newspapers to find out more about the area and now believes the well they foundwaslikelyfor theprivateuseofthe landowner, rather than St Michael’s Well which was communal.Workonthe new apartments is now underway. NEW maps showing ‘dog-friendly walking routes’ have been installed at Crosby Coastal Park. The signs also show the locations of poo bins, which is hoped to reduce the amount of dog fouling in the coastal area. A MUSICAL group in Crosby is on the lookout for newCrosbymembers.Gilbert & Sullivan Society has welcomed their new musical director Robin Stopford ahead of the start of rehearsals for their next production, The Mikado, in September. Robin has met members of the society and their acclaimed accompanist Ann Dickinson MBE. Ann originally joined as a performing member with Crosby in 1956, she left for a few years to do otherLuckilythings.for Crosby G&S, she eventually returned to become accompanist playing at rehearsals and concerts for the society. Ann also plays piano for several amateur musical and drama groups throughout Merseyside. The Mikado will be staged at The Little Theatre, Southport from April 19-22 next year. New members are particularly welcome to join for rehearsals starting in September. This is an opportunity to take part in a fully staged performance with a full orchestra. ‘Limited service’ for two days of rail strike action
RAIL operatorMerseyrail will run a ‘limited train service’ this Thursday (August 18) and this Saturday (August 20), dueto two planned 24hour strikesby Network Rail staffwho are members of the RMT union. The Liverpool City Region rail network is affected by theUK-wide national walkout, asNetwork Rail signallingandmaintenance employeeswillbetak ing industrial action from 7am on Thursday, August 18to 7amonFriday, August19,andfrom 7amon Saturday, August 20 to 7am on Sunday, August 21. Para-athlete dreams of Commonwealth Games
A YOUNG para-athlete has been inspired by the Commonwealth Games and said that “one day I want to be in their shoes.” Amy Thompson, 15, (shown, right) who studies at Holy Family High School in Thornton, won gold in shotput and the discus at the World Para Athletics Championships in Italy with Team GB this year. After being invited to watch a beach volleyball match at the Commonwealth Games last week in Birmingham, it has left her dreaming of tak ing part in the international event in the future. She said: “We were only in Birmingham for the day, but it was huge to have been invited to watch.“Itwas a great opportunity to experience what it is like at these sorts of competitions before you actually go to compete. “If I do make it to a Commonwealth Games now, it will feel far more normal.”
CAMPAIGNERS from Save Rim rose Valley are hitting the road to hold a demonstration out side the National Highways regional headquarters in Manchester.Acoachwill be setting off on Friday, August 26 to take more than 60 people down the M62 to take part on the protest. The group are trying to per suade National Highways to scrap its plan to build a new road through Rimrose Valley Country Park. When in Manchester, letters and materials produced by local school children will be handed out to try and raise awareness of the campaign.

Thankfully, a new one hasnow been provided by Thornton Parish Council. Councillor Bob McGill said: “We are delighted to seethedefibrillator replaced.It’s something that can beused byanyone inan emergencyto help restart theheart whensomeone suffersa cardiac arrest.“Whenthedefibrillator wentmissingafew months agoit was a realblow to thelocal com munity and we received manymessages from concernedresidents aboutwhat wouldhappen ina worst case scenario of a medical emergency without this life-saving equipment nearby. “Many couldn’tbelieve it was takenand never returned.Weknowthat localmedicalsupportis vital inthose first important fewminutes when early action canmake a huge differenceand that’s why it was so importantto the Parish Council to make sure we provided areplacement as quickly as possible.“Thedefibrillator istheretosave lives.Every minute aftercardiac arrestthat theperson goes without CPR and defibrillationtheir chance of sur vival reduces by 10% every minute, but by using the defibrillator,after calling999,thechances ofsur vival increasesignificantly. But not, to cut short a time-honoured tradition gracing newsagents for several decades, motoring magazines proclaiming it’s time to GO TOPLESS while parading bargain-priced convertibles across theirI’mcovers.nottalking MX-5s or Z4s or other two-seater sports cars; I’m on about cheap ‘n’ cheerful, family-friendly droptops based on decapitated versions of the nation’s big sellers. I suspect I know the reason why they aren’t doing the rounds in the motoring mags right now. Put simply, with a handful of exceptions, there aren’t any. Less than a decade ago I remember roadtesting Volkswagen’s Golf MkVI Cabriolet in e Champion’s pages, but nowadays there is no open-air spino of Europe’s bestseller – instead, the only droptop it’ll sell you is an open-top T-Roc, for which you need at least £31k. Ford will no longer og you an al fresco Focus and Vauxhall’s Astra Cabriolet is long gone, as its successor of sorts, the Cascada. Peugeot made a name for itself in the Noughties with SLK-esque folding metal roofs, but neither the 208 nor the 308 carry on this ni y feature. Nor does Renault, which in the Nineties would sell you a Megane in Convertible form – and a hatch, saloon, estate,

Just about your only options include the Smart ForTwo Cabrio, which on account of being electric-only currently costs £24,645. In fact, it’s Fiat who’ll x you up with Britain’s cheapest cabriolet, the 500C at £16,655, although it’d much rather you help the Italians reduce their carbon footprint by spending an extra £13,000 on the much newer allelectric model. MINI’s entry-level Cabriolet, meanwhile, will set you back £22,105, but a er that you’re into posh German metal if you’re looking for wind in not just your hair, but the barnetts of your nearest and dearest too. at means the drop-top versions of Audi’s A5, Mercedes’ C-Class and BMW’s 4-Series, all of which start at around £44,000. Ouch. I’m sure there are all sorts of pro tability reasons why, like coupés, cabriolets have all but vanished from the nation’s forecourts, but having grown up in an era when you could have everything from a droptop Metro to the Saab 900 Convertible, I miss four-seater cabrios. And, I suspect, so do you, given the amount of you I’ve seen out and about in secondhand Audi A4 Convertibles and Golf Cabriolets during the latest heatwave.
