AN artist from Waterloo has put her love of dogs to good use after she was asked to draw them in a new children’s book! Mandy Lalley, who is a devoted dog owner, says she can draw pictures of them “all day long” - so it was a match made in heaven when she was hired to illustrate a children’s book about a dog. ‘Street Dogs’, penned by Lisa Worth, is about a little dog called Rafiq and his adventures with his pack in the United Arab Emirates. Mandy said: “Last year I was asked by Lisa to illustrate her lovely new children’s book. “Lisa had been visiting UAE and then got stuck over there due to the flight bans back to the UK during the pandemic. “Whilst there she wrote a story about a little dog Rafiq and his adventures with his pack, after seeing the street dogs living outside her apartment. The illustrations came at a time when things had slowed down for me too. “Lisa and I had previously met through theatre shows in Liverpool, which had all stopped because of Covid. “As we became friends, she noticed my char acter drawings of dogs. “I was made up to be asked to illustrate, as I could draw dogs all day long and had just adop ted my own ex-street dog Vicky.

Mike Lampard, Crosby Phone mast plan near school is outrageous

I am grateful for the upgrading of the cycle path parallel to the railway track between Hightown and Formby. More of this needs to be done right across the borough but I suspect that no one really is prepared to push for a more radical approach, and so the scen ario goes on unchanged and muddled. We do need to abandon our obsession with private car usage for every piffling little journey, which is entirely extra vagant, self-indulgent, and with little regard for the environment.

To give an example: I regularly used to cycle to Formby along the by-pass. The cycle lane stops half way between the southern Formby roundabout and the Ince Blundell traffic lights. Venturing at that point on to the dual carriageway is hazardous.

Like lots of local people, I often use the Boots and Iceland stores on South Road inHowever,Waterloo.I do think the buildings they are in have become a real eyesore. It wouldn’t cost much for both compan ies to do the right thing and give their shop fronts a long overdue makeover.

As you are no doubt aware, Switch Island in Aintree is an accident black spot, in fact as I write this email there is a three car pile up in that locality there now. I thought that I would set up a bespoke Facebook page, for drivers to report acci dents as and when they occur so others can be warned to avoid the area and take altern ative routes Amazingly, home.since the page went live, over 500 people have signed up to it. It is called ‘Switch Island Liverpool’ it must be the only roundabout that has a Facebook page.

Many cyclists now are resorting to using the pavement, which in itself becomes a hazard for pedestrians: fur ther discouragement from bike use.

Nurses need help too, not waffle

I read the story about the well and old pottery being found underneath the former Crown building in Crosby and I’d like to share a story from when I used to work there. I used to run Rob Tate Photography from the building along with my wife, who had a salon there. Stuff used to go missing all the time. I had wedding pictures on my desk before leaving the office, and the next day they would be gone. They then reappeared days later in the same place with no one else hav ing access to the building. I was using a hammer once to fit the carpets and when I turned around it had been moved to the other side of the room. I once took a picture of one of my wife’s clients and after we looked at it we could see a clear face in the back ground.Mywife just stared at it and said ‘oh my god have you seen this?’ We had a medium come to the build ing and she said there was a spirit livingApparentlythere. when the building was being built in 1901 a man fell off the top and died. We were told his spirit still lived in theBeforebuilding.wemoved out of the building, we were told that we had ‘helped him on his way ’ and that ‘ we’d be repaid in some way ’, whatever that means! It’s really interesting that old items are being found under the building.

What a load of waffle by LT, Crosby regard ing daughter and granddaughter having worked through COVID and didn’t strike, receiving 3% pay rise. Maybe that’s why nurses including myself who worked and caught COVID quite badly are on buttons and are now few in numbers. I enjoy being a nurse but do it as a job, not a vocation and it is LT from Crosby ’s attitude that keeps our wages pitiful. Well done to the bus drivers: 11% pay rise demand and well deserved with 60 plus passengers to ferry about. Clapping and patronisation doesn’t put food in Nursesmouths.needhelp too, not waffle.

We must end obsession with using cars for every journey

Joe Kelsallsent usthis photohe tookof VictoriaTower beingre flected inSalisbury Dock as shereturned home toMaghull, just after dawn recently.

Thank you for highlighting the proposal to place a 18 metre monopole outside Great Crosby Catholic Primary School. A similar proposal for Forefield Lane School was scrapped earlier in the year, due to safety concerns. The request to site it outside a larger primary school on a busier road is outrageous. I hope Sefton planners treat this request as it deserves and refuse permission.

Although I was pleased to read details about the new PSPO (Public Space Protec tion Order), nothing will change unless there is a decent level of enforcement. Without resourcing enforce ment, this order is merely, like this letter, just words on a piece of paper.

Some ghostly goings-on at old Crown Building remembered!

I am in support of Nick Ballam’s letter. He makes some relevant and pertinent points, in particular regarding the haz ardous nature of cycling and the lack of genuinely safe provision for cyclists. I have been a regular cyclist for the past 45 years, and this is entirely for transport to and from specific venues, such as work or to and from shops, etc. The cycling ‘experience’ has become ever more hazardous. I am not critical of car drivers in gen eral, although there are occasions when they lack courtesy and consideration, and sometimes downright dangerous! The concern is that they do not see us until it is almost too late. The new regulations try to address this but regulations of any kind will not begin to solve such issues satisfactorily. As Nick Ballam states, there is a clear need for ‘joined up’ provision that would encourage us to use our bikes as a regular habit, and so refrain from our increasingly obsessional use of the private car, with all the inevitable con gestion and parking frustrations.

It’s e ectively a test bed for 2023’s followup event, and Aintree Circuit Club is already talking to the relevant people at Se on Council about how the seafront can be turned into a sprint course this time next year. at’d be really exciting to watch, and it has some historical precedent too; long before the Coastal Road was built, this stretch of road was used for exactly that purpose, so it’s a neat way of bringing some of the north west’s motoring heritage back to life. Of course, even without the seafront demonstration runs there’s plenty to make it worth jotting in your diary, including all of the elements that stood out from the event’s maiden voyage. So that means lots of cars and bikes going on show in Victoria Park, and the chance to see a copious cast of classics being put through their paces along the Promenade and Lord Street. And the best bit is that it costs….absolutely nothing. I’ve seen too many car shows struggling with dwindling attendance and rising admission prices this summer as their organisers – just like the rest of us – grapple with the cost of living crisis, but this is genuinely a day of petrolhead fun that you can enjoy without having to stick your hand in your pocket.Sounds good to me. Get Sunday, 11 September jotted down in the diary… David Simister is the editor of Classic Car Weekly The event includes the chance to see classics being paraded along Southport Promenade

Southport’s celebration of speed is back

24 ● Visit us @ www.ChampNews.com The Champion ● Wednesday24 A ugust 2022

THE HOWL of race-tuned Jaguars and carefully fettled fast Fords thundering up Southport’s seafront could be hitting your eardrums pretty soon. at’s the big pitch for Southport’s Classic & Speed, which returns to the resort next month following its inaugural outing last year. Last weekend the event’s organisers got in touch to con rm that they’re looking to close a halfmile section of Marine Drive as part of this year’s event. It’s an intriguing new spino for the resort’s celebration of motoring, especially as Aintree Circuit Club’s other well-known event, the Ormskirk MotorFest, isn’t going ahead with its usual August Bank Holiday weekend outing this year. In other words, if you turn up to the West Lancashire town’s oneway system this Sunday expecting any singleseaters to be buzzing around, you’re going to be disappointed. It’llbegreat to see motorsport-prepared classics powering up Marine Drive instead, but it’s worth mentioning that while the marshals will be treating it as they would any other motorsport event, with some prohibited areas on the inland side of the road for safety reasons, the runs will be a strictly controlled, low-speed a air, with none of the entries being timed and no one being given prizes for being the quickest. A pre-invited cast of cars will be agged o at one-minute intervals from the Southport O shore Rescue Trust centre enroute to the area where the pier threads its way through the Ocean Plaza, and while it will be worth watching it won’t be competitive.
