MP Moore says that there is “overwhelming public opposition” to the lanes because it replaced on-street parking. He said following the meeting: “It was absolutely fantastic to be able to host more than 200 people today to discuss the cycle lanes in Southport’s town centre. “I found the meeting incredibly informative and would like to thank each and every person that attended. We had a great, con structive discussion from a broad range of voices. “I know how much those who attended valued an in-person dis cussion. It was great to meet everyone, and I hope we will see a positive change in Southport’s town centre - both for residents and for businesses.”

Church packed out for meeting on controversialtown’scycle lanes

MORE than 200 people turned up to meet with Southport MP Damien Moore over the town’s controversial cycle lanes. Mr Moore spoke at length at the meeting, which was held at Holy Trinity Church last Saturday, and also allowed an open discussion from a “broad range of voices.” Sefton Council recently printed a notice in the Champion to inform locals that they intend to continue with the existing cycle lanes - des pite their unpopularity - currently installed on Tulketh Street, Wesley Street, Hoghton Street and Chapel Street.Thelocal authority introduced the cycle lanes during the height of the pandemic in 2020 and claimed it encouraged more people to cycle, which is better for the environment.

AN incident inSouthport town centre where a fallen treebranch injured a passer-by, has beendescribed by Sefton Council as a ‘ very rare occurrence’. Experts havenowdeemed thetreetobe safe. The Champion reported last week how a man aged in his 50s needed hospital treat ment tohead and facial injuriesafter the heavy bough fell on him. At the time, the injured man was walk inginthe smallgreenspaceoutside Sainsbury ’s, knownas StGeorge’s Gar dens. The local authority say the large tree has since beenassessed and is deemedto be safe.Theybelieve thefallenbranchwas ‘likely caused’ by recent hot weather.

From page 1 Following the meeting at Holy Trinity Church, many local residents took to social media to discuss the cycle lane issue further. One person said: “Why not invest in the current cycle lanes on the Coastal Road and the likes of Bentham’s Way. Both always over grown and unused. Put bollards on them to make safer, resurface and they might actually getAnotherused.” person added: “The existing lanes are not visible enough and maybe Queen’s Road could remain open for cars. “A review and feasibility study needs doing on possible cycle routes. I can see the need to link cycle lanes with the railway stations.”

A councilspokesperson toldthe Cham pion: “We understand that a limb from a treein StGeorge's Gardens,Southport cameloose anddetached, cominginto contact with a member of the public.

The sun’s summer rays shine on an almost deserted Ainsdale Beach in this photograph by Elaine Paisley.

James A. Doyle, Ainsdale Light pollution concerns at Marine Lake project I don’t like the sound of a ‘Water and Light’ project on the Marine Lake. What does it involve? I have visions of a ghastly light show illuminating the lake and disturbing the birds.Surely the wildlife are entitled to peace at night - the fireworks are bad enough. Has the Council never heard of ‘light pollution’ or, while I am at it, that trees absorb poisonous carbon monoxide?

The letter from John Jones (Cham pion 17/08/22) suggesting strikers are the ‘mindless greedy few ’ is both ignorant and selfish. Strikers don’t want to cause anyone disruption but they have every right to strike for decent wages and condi tions. If it wasn’t for strikers and unions, working conditions would have been a lot worse. John Jones mentions ‘external influ ences’ that have caused a rise in inflation - I assume he means years of Tory misrule, privatisation of utilities, and a shambolic Brexit by an out-ofcontrol government I’m guessing he helped put into power? He also mentions workers ‘...should be grateful they have jobs’, suggest ing they are getting their wages for free, rather than for an exchange of labour.Whyshould workers and unions put up with things they can’t control when they see such inequality in this country as the haves get richer and the have-not’s get poorer. I’ve no doubt Mr Jones Clapped for Carers but will be furious if they strike to help their members who need to use food banks after a 40 hour shift. I’m 48, I’ve worked all my life and I’m probably regarded as one of the older members of the workforce, but I don’t remember the Harold Wilson government that ‘...did so much to embed inflation for over a decade’ Time moves on, circumstances change and any comparisons to the 1970’s are irrelevant in the current climate.MrJones never had it so good and should accept that the minor incon veniences to his no doubt comfortable life are done out of des peration with the terrible mess this country is in, not just to annoy him.

Many people will be delighted to hear that therewill be no changesto Arriva ServiceCapsoffto49. TheChampionandTom Martin’s excellent piecealerting every one and spotlighting this important local issue. A big thank you to Ainsdale Councillor Lynne Thompson and her team working hardtoresolvethis andgettingthejob done.

It’s very tiresome hearing how people ‘ worked through Covid’ Inreply totherecent Avivadriver ’s letter in the Champion. I wouldlike to pointout that although I totallyagree with the right to strike for fair pay and condi tions for all workers in this country, I object to this tired line of ‘ we worked through Covid’ Most working class people worked through Covid. Supermarketstaff stillserved, drivers (whichI amone) still delivered, nursescared forthe sick andcareworkers carriedon. And there are plenty more examples. Please strike forwhat you believe in - but pleaseleave out the Covid thing... it’s getting very tiresome.

VINTAGE buses will be rolled out across Southport when a popular fundraising day returns to the resort.TheMerseyside Transport Trust will be holding its first ‘running day ’ in the town since before the pandemic to raise funds for the upkeep of its fleet of more than 50 vintage vehicles. This is a ‘rare and unique’ opportunity to enjoy a ride on some classic buses, which will run at intervals from outside the former Southport Floral Hall from 10am on Sunday, September 11 and call at normal bus stops along the routes. Lee Wolfe, events officer for the transport trust said: “This popular event is now in its 15th year after a twoyear break following the pan demic. We look forward to welcoming back all our support ers and we hope to attract many first-time visitors too. “All funds raised at the event will go a long way in helping to keep our collection safe for the future.’’

VOLKSWAGEN’S new all-electric van could be on your driveway for £479 a month. at’s the lease price for the ID. Buzz Cargo, which behind the Fi ies-inspired two-tone paintwork has a 77kWh battery and electric motor producing 204bhp and capable of a 256-mile range. You can also buy it outright for £38,125, with that price including the rst three services and its rst year’s MoT. Go to www.volkswagen.co.uk to nd out more.

at’s the big pitch for Southport’s Classic & Speed, which returns to the resort next month following its inaugural outing last year. Last weekend the event’s organisers got in touch to con rm that they’re looking to close a halfmile section of Marine Drive as part of this year’s event. It’s an intriguing new spino for the resort’s celebration of motoring, especially as Aintree Circuit Club’s other well-known event, the Ormskirk MotorFest, isn’t going ahead with its usual August Bank Holiday weekend outing this year. In other words, if you turn up to the West Lancashire town’s oneway system this Sunday expecting any singleseaters to be buzzing around, you’re going to be disappointed. It’llbegreat to see motorsport-prepared classics powering up Marine Drive instead, but it’s worth mentioning that while the marshals will be treating it as they would any other motorsport event, with some prohibited areas on the inland side of the road for safety reasons, the runs will be a strictly controlled, low-speed a air, with none of the entries being timed and no one being given prizes for being the quickest. A pre-invited cast of cars will be agged o at one-minute intervals from the Southport O shore Rescue Trust centre enroute to the area where the pier threads its way through the Ocean Plaza, and while it will be worth watching it won’t be competitive.

A HOTTED-UP version of Audi’s performance-focused estate is available to order next month. e RS4 Competition has a sports exhaust, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, sharper steering and revamped engine management so ware to help it reach 180mph, with its turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 sending 450bhp to all four wheels. To get one of these track-focused Audi load-luggers you’ll need £84,600 but be quick, because only 75 are being sent to the UK.

It’s e ectively a test bed for 2023’s followup event, and Aintree Circuit Club is already talking to the relevant people at Se on Council about how the seafront can be turned into a sprint course this time next year. at’d be really exciting to watch, and it has some historical precedent too; long before the Coastal Road was built, this stretch of road was used for exactly that purpose, so it’s a neat way of bringing some of the north west’s motoring heritage back to life. Of course, even without the seafront demonstration runs there’s plenty to make it worth jotting in your diary, including all of the elements that stood out from the event’s maiden voyage. So that means lots of cars and bikes going on show in Victoria Park, and the chance to see a copious cast of classics being put through their paces along the Promenade and Lord Street. And the best bit is that it costs….absolutely nothing. I’ve seen too many car shows struggling with dwindling attendance and rising admission prices this summer as their organisers – just like the rest of us – grapple with the cost of living crisis, but this is genuinely a day of petrolhead fun that you can enjoy without having to stick your hand in your pocket.Sounds good to me. Get Sunday, 11 September jotted down in the diary… David Simister is the editor of Classic Car Weekly

The event includes the chance to see classics being paraded along Southport Promenade
