COUNCILLORS are to consider plans to tackle parking chaos at the Fairy Glen beauty spot in West Lancs.

The sheer number of vehicles which descend of the site, which borders Appley Bridge and Parbold, has resulted in a “serious safety problem” on one of the borough’s busiest roads.

There has been a huge increase in visitors to the beauty spot in recent months and now Lancashire County Council is proposing to introduce a ‘red route’ clearway, to prevent vehicles from stopping, waiting, or parking, along the A5209 - along which Fairy Glen sits from junction 27 of the M6 to the start of the 30mph zone to Parbold.

A report to the council’s cabinet meeting due to be held on Thursday, January 20 outlines that the number of people visiting Fairy Glen, a small woodland area, has ballooned since the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, which prompted many people to explore new places for exercise and recreation.

but has no dedicated car park, resulting in a problem with large numbers of people parking along grass verges on the A5209. This has raised serious safety concerns for the visitors themselves and other traffic on what is a very busy route.

The report to the council’s cabinet outlines the results of recent public consultation on the proposals to introduce a ‘red route’ clearway, which would allow the county council to enforce parking and waiting across the whole width of the highway, including the pavements and grass verges.

County Councillor Charlie Edwards, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Since 2020, Fairy Glen has begun attracting a huge number of visitors, many from beyond the immediate local area, resulting in a serious safety problem due to people parking along what is a very busy road. Aldi submit revised plans for town centre site... and agree to keep Concourse store open ALDI has submitted a revised application in their bid to build a new store at land at Westgate and High Street in Skelmersdale and they have now given assurances that they will keep their Concourse unit open, which has a lease until 2025.

At the end of 2019 the supermarket chain submitted plans to relocate to a new store within the town at the old Co-op offices at Westgate, but the application has encountered multiple objections.

The new development would create 40 to 50 full and part-time jobs.

An objection was raised by the applicant’s existing landlord, who were “extremely concerned” about the adverse impact caused by the loss of Aldi.

Aldi want to develop a site at Westgate which was occupied by a 1960’s office building until it was demolished in 2021 after an arson attack. The building had been vacant since 2016 when the Co-operative Group moved out.

As part of the revised application there is a covering letter from Avison Young, who are representing the German retailer.

A POLICE officer who helped an elderly woman from West Lancashire with a heart condition has been praised for being there in her ‘hour of need’ while she was on a vsiit to Nottingham.

PC Sam Warren went to her aid when he spotted the woman and her husband who were on a visit to struggling to climb a hill in Park Row, in the city centre.

The kind-hearted officer got out his police car and asked if they were OK. The husband said his wife had become unwell and was at the point of collapse.

PC Warren offered to take them to hospital but instead they asked to be given a lift to their son’s address so that she could rest. The officer helped the lady into his car and drove them to their son’s flat, where he helped her into the property.

Impressed by his act of kindness, the husband wrote to Nottingham Police Station, where PC Warren is based, to thank him for his compassion and help. The couple also sent him a Christmas card.

In the letter, the husband said: “I don’t know what may have become of us” had PC Warren not stopped his car and come to their aid.

It added: “My wife is now recovered and we are eternally grateful to him.”

Recalling the incident a week before Christmas, PC Warren said: “I was driving at the back of the police station and could see the lady was struggling for breath and was leant against a signpost.

“I wound down my window and asked if they were OK. The husband said his wife had a heart condition and was unable to continue up the hill.

“I asked if they wanted a lift or if I could take her to the hospital. She didn’t want to go to so I gave them a lift to their son’s flat, which is where they were staying as they weren’t from Nottingham.

“They said the flat was at the top of a steep hill, so I gave them a lift. I helped her into the car and made sure they got inside the flat OK.” Although it was a small act of kindness, PC Warren said it demonstrated an important part of policing that often goes unnoticed by the public.

He said: “People think police just go around arresting people, but there’s a lot more to the job than that.

“We’re not just there to investigate crimes, we’re there to help people.

“I would have done it for anyone because it was the right thing to do.”

CCTV demand from traders for ‘eyesore’ alleyway Businesses call for secluded passage to be made more secure to prevent fly-tipping and anti social behaviour Report by Henry James CALLS are being made for a security gate and CCTV cameras to be installed at an ‘eyesore’ town centre alleyway which has attracted flytipping and anti social behaviour.

Businesses close to the alley between Church Street and Hutton Way near the Two Saints Retail Park say rubbish is being left there which is attracting rats to the area.

They say the secluded alley attracts anti-social behaviour and the problem has got worse since a metal access gate was dismantled.

The alley was cleaned up by council workers following a site visit by Knowsley Ward Councillor Gareth Dowling who is now asking the CCTV cameras to be installed there.

He said: “The inappropriate storing of trade waste coupled with littering and possible fly-tipping has

caused real concern for local businesses, particularly with the sighting of rats.

“I raised this with council officers and I am pleased that West Lancashire Borough Council’s Clean and Green Team promptly visited the site and assured me that waste bins will be relocated there.

“The council is also seeking to establishing ownership and responsibility for the alleyway through Land Registry searches.”

He added that the council has notified the police of the traders’ concerns and requested increased foot patrols and attention to nearby CCTV cameras.

Cllr Dowling said the council had also asked for assessment for CCTV cameras to be positioned at the junction of this alley and that which connects Two Saints and Church Street.

He said steps are also underway to re-install the gate to restrict public access to the alley.

“I also noticed a number of raised flags which may be a trip hazard, so these have also been reported through to the council for repair or to report directly to whoever is responsible for their upkeep.

“I look forward to continuing to work with council officers, the police and local business owners to improve and enhance this piece of land in our town centre which has been described as an eyesore.

“Alongside recent improvements, developments and businesses opening on Church Street, we want to ensure this end of town is thriving equal to Moor Street, Aughton Street and Burscough Street.”

It states: “A further reason why the application materials have merited revision is that whilst Aldi’s objective remains to bring their latest discount foodstore format to Skelmersdale, so that they can better meet the needs of Skelmersdale residents from a building capable of providing their full food offer, they have reconsidered their position on their existing Skelmersdale town centre store.

“They are now proposing to

retain their Concourse Centre store (where the current lease runs until the end of 2025) so that there would be no consequential reduction in consumer choice and competition within the town centre should a new Aldi store open at Westgate.”

Aldi has said though they cannot adequately serve Skelmersdale from their existing store within the Concourse Centre in Skelmersdale town centre.

new application explains: “This is both due to the store’s limited size (which has a sales area one third less than Aldi’s current foodstore format) and inherent operational constraints associated with the Concourse Centre itself.

“These include there being no dedicated surface level car parking within easy reach of customers using trolleys – critical for those undertaking a ‘bulk’ food shopping trip – and reduced operational hours, dictated by the trading hours of the shopping centre.”

WEST Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has reiterated her full support to the campaign for a ‘Hillsborough Law’ to protect and support families of those bereaved in disasters.

Ms Cooper, who was a Liverpool city councillor for 27 years, has spoken a number of times in the House of Commons about the ongoing struggle for Justice for the 97 victims of the disaster on April 15 1989, and for their families, who have shown such solidarity and dignity in their fight for the truth.

Calls for a ‘Hillsborough Law’ emerged in the wake of a review by the Right Reverend James Jones, former Bishop of Liverpool, which detailed 25 recommendations designed to reform the systems of unaccountable power, which were abused by organisations connected to the disaster.

The law would bring in a number of measures including: a public advocate to represent the families of those bereaved in disaster events; a ‘duty of candour’ on public servants such as police officers to tell the truth and co-operate fully with inquiries; increased access to legal aid so that families can have legal representation of their own; and a requirement that any criminal trials following a major inquest take place in a court with relevant expertise and status, rather than a crown court.

Ms Cooper said: “As we draw close to the 33rd anniversary of this unspeakable tragedy, I again pay tribute to the work of all the campaigners for Justice for the 97, and especially the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

“ITV ’s recent drama Anne has served as a powerful reminder to the whole nation of the impact of Hillsborough on the city of the Liverpool, and the countless lives that were forever changed by that day.

“I have given this campaign my full and unreserved support - it is long overdue that families affected by disasters like Hillsborough have enhanced protection in law, and receive the support that they deserve.

“More recent incidents such as the fire at Grenfell Tower remind us that we must always strive for truth and justice for those who lose their lives in these senseless tragedies.

“The truth will come out but it shouldn’t take so many years. The Government needs to make it easier, not just for justice to be done – but to be seen to be done.”

WEST Lancashire Borough Council has not performed well in a nationwide list of council corporate imagery, put together by a graphic designer.

The list has proved to be a viral hit and creator Robin Wilde does not hold back with some of his comments.

West Lancashire Borough Council’s emblem came in at 316th with Mr Wilde commenting simply: “Get in the landfill with the rest.”

Bottom of the list was Allerdale Borough Council in Cumbria (403) while top was Bedford Borough Council.

Robin said: “Each has been ranked using some broad criteria accounting for the adherence to design principles, the originality of the concept, and the technical execution, with nebulous bonus points added or subtracted on a whim, because unlike your local council, this is not a democracy.”

A spokesperson for West Lancashire Borough Council said: “We are very proud of our Council crest which appears on our publications, signs, and vehicles and features references to the Borough’s heritage. The motto is ‘Salus Populi Suprema Lex’ which translates as ‘the health of the people is the highest law’, demonstrating that we are here to serve the people of West Lancashire and they are our top priority.”

Lancashire County Council did appear in the top half of the table, but was still placed at 182 out of the 403 local authorities assessed.

About the county council emblem Robin said: “I’m not sure what’s going on with the wordmark here.

“It looks like it was made of gelatine and then sucked on for half an hour. It’s not an awful look, but jars badly with the very angular rose and supporting text.”

A Lancashire County Council spokesperson said the authority was “really proud of its logo” as “it says exactly who we are and is instantly recognisable because of our county red rose – just what a good logo should be.”

The spokesperson added: “This ranking is a bit of fun and has given us something to smile about.

“Of course we disagree with our ranking – by proudly showing off the historic red rose of Lancashire, we’re pretty sure our logo is the best in the country.”

Parbold Village Hall open again and set to host Sunday markets PARBOLD Village Hall is now fully open thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the completion of a new heating and ventilation system.

The centre’s regular groups are now up and running and the newly named Parbold Sunday Market begins on Sunday, January 30.

A spokesperson for Parbold Village Hall said: “Little did we know in January 2020 when we were replacing our old heating system that our hall would remain closed for more than 12 months.

“This was a huge setback but we had to keep everyone as safe as possible.

“During this time our volunteers received The Queen’s award for Voluntary

Parbold Village Hall.

Services.”

He added that having a modern heating and ventilation system was particularly

important given the Covid situation and that work was made possible by grants from Parbold Parish Council.

Mountain Bike Trails open at Tawd Valley as work of volunteers on project praised

Walking group welcomes new members LIVERPOOL Catholic Ramblers Association are welcoming new members to get out in the countryside in 2022.

WORK by the community has been heralded in helping to create the newly opened mountain bike trails in Tawd Valley Park, Skelmersdale.

Installation of the track has been overseen by the council’s Rangers Team but chiefs say the “incredible effort” from the Friends of Tawd Valley group and other volunteers who lent a hand during ‘dig days’ was a critical part of the success of this project.

A council spokesperson said: “The input of the community was crucial to the success of this facility going forward.”

The project was funded by cash from the Community Infrastructure Levy secured by West Lancashire Borough Council together with a community grant from Sport England.

The mountain bike trail was officially opened by the Mayor of West Lancashire, Councillor Gordon Johnson on Saturday, January 15.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, cabinet member for leisure, said: “I'm delighted people will be able to visit the beautiful Tawd Valley Park, with its greenery and fresh air while keeping fit and having fun.

“It’s great to see local businesses and community groups joining together with us to deliver a valuable outdoor facility to the people of the borough.”

Residents warned to watch out for NHS Covid passport scam Report by Henry James RESIDENTS are being warned by Lancashire County Council Trading Standards Service to be on the lookout for a fake NHS Covid passport scam that’s been duping people into handing over their financial details.

Fraudsters are attempting to con the public by convincing them to hand over money, financial details and personal information.

The sophisticated scam involves people receiving a text or email purportedly from the NHS asking them for their payment details so they can process their Covid pass.

Residents have also reported being contacted by phone by someone falsely claiming to be from the NHS. The NHS Covid Pass is free and is available via the NHS App, the NHS website or by calling 119. The NHS will never ask for payment or any financial details or issue fines or penalties about your NHS Covid Pass.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “Criminals will always look for opportunities to exploit and will think nothing of preying on people’s fears and concerns to get their hands on their personal details.

“Some of the scams we are coming across, particularly those relating to Covid-19, are getting more sophisticated so it's important to stay two steps ahead. Any communication that attempts to pressure you into handing over your personal details should trigger alarm bells and you should never do that without further investigation.

“Once these crooks have your details, they can commit identity theft, take money from your account, or

Another coronavirus con to look out for is a phishing scam that asks the recipient to click on a link to order an Omicron PCR test.

The scam email urges the recipient to ‘apply now to avoid restrictions’ and is headed up with the NHS logo.

The county council is warning residents if they receive an email like this, they should not click any of the links contained within it.

They said people should be suspicious of emails received that offer such tests and forward them to report@phishing.gov.uk Cllr Buckley added: “If you have symptoms of Covid-19 then you need to book a PCR test online or by calling 119.

“Rapid lateral flow tests for people who are symptomatic can be ordered online or picked up from your nearest collection point, which can be located using the NHS Site Finder.”

LETTERS to the Editor I got fantastic care from staff at the walk-in centre The staff were great.

The nurse was interested and very helpful, describing in simple language why she came to her conclusion and showing me my X-rays on the screen to help explain what was going on.

Brilliant! And much easier than getting to see my GP in the current climate.

The only small drawback was being asked by another nurse to put my mask on properly when she, herself, wore one that didn’t cover her nose!

Helping Sightsavers can transform lives As CEO of international development organisation Sightsavers, I see many examples of ‘everyday hero’ local communities supporting societal challenges.

Enock’s father, Chikumbutso, told us that before the project, his son kept himself to himself and was an unhappy child, but he now chats with friends and seems content. Chikumbutso sees a good future for Enock and is more confident about his transition to primary school.

Creating channel could solve flooding problem on road The only road from north of Skelmersdale ‘town centre’ regularly floods after heavy rain, to the point where it has to be closed for two or three days.

After an internet search I can find only 1 newspaper photograph.

This gives the impression that the flooding is due to the River Tawd overflowing.

I’m guessing that no one who is in a position to cure the problem has ever been to the location to see for themselves and maybe relies on that photo for all their information on the problem.

If they did go and investigate

while its flooded, they would see that the flooded road is about five metres higher and about the same distance away from a stream which meets the river about 400 metres away.

It is separated by a grassy mound which blocks water from running from road to stream.

It appears to me that it would be relatively simple to divert rainwater off the road and into the stream by creating a simple channel.

You can’t just blame Covid for staff shortages in our health services Your readers will be aware of the welldocumented pressures currently being experienced in health services both locally and nationally.

Our members, providing frontline nursing care to patients under extremely challenging circumstances, are exhausted.

They are aiming, as always, to provide the highest standards of safe and effective care at a time of high demand and staffing shortages.

It would be easy to blame the current staffing pressures on the Covid-19 pandemic – a combination of more patients needing Covid treatment and rising staff sickness levels due to illness and isolation.

This is certainly where the government would like to pin the blame.

The reality is that the current problems have been a long time in the making.

For more than a decade the Royal College of Nursing has been warning that the NHS and wider health and care system is so short of nursing staff that patients do not always receive the safe and high standard of care they expect.

Factors such as a loss of nurses from EU countries, changes to nursing student finance in 2016, a failure to award staff a fair pay rise and the continued lack of a coherent workforce plan that addresses how to retain experienced nurses as well as recruit new ones have all contributed to the extraordinary circumstances our members are now working under.

While we all hope the pressures piled on

by Covid-19 will soon start to subside again, the underlying workforce shortages, declining morale and unsustainable pressures will remain.

The other day I needed to attend the Ormskirk Walk-in Centre.

As I drove in I noticed that Urgent Care was shown as closed.

Not associating the two (Urgent Care and Walk In Centre) I carried on. Urgent Care, as it’s apparently called, was open.

I had to wait three hours to get sorted but the care itself was fantastic.

I had a very painful foot and after an initial examination was sent for an X-ray “just in case.”

The wonderful nurse decided what I had wrong with me but as I’m on a lot of other medication I called in the doctor just to make certain the drugs she felt appropriate were not going to clash with what I already took.

So, seen, diagnosed, and prescription in hand I left.

Charity marks 30 years of supporting community Report by Henry James A CHURCH and charity that has helped thousands of young people in Skelmersdale is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The Divine Solution Church and the Hope House project were founded by Pastor Tony Adegbenro, who came to the UK from Nigeria to study banking but fell in love with Merseyside and founded the church and charity with his wife, Dola, in 1992.

It’s still going strong today, funded by two Hope charity shops which are now so busy he has had to invest in a 20-foot storage unit bought from North Wales-based Container Sales Centre to store donated stock.

Woodlands Animal Sanctuary appeals for more donations WOODLANDS Animal Sanctuary in Holmeswood has launched an appeal for more donations.

Volunteers at the centre said a monthly donation will make a “world of difference to the animals who benefit from it.”

Tony said: “We were reaching about 2,000 kids a week in different schools and over the years we have worked with tens of thousands of children in and around Skelmersdale.

“By going online we are now reaching out to many, many more young people all around the world.”

Rotary club members thank public for festive float support MEMBERS of Maghull and Aughton Rotary Club want to thank residents who gave to their Christmas Float collection.

In December, the club’s Christmas Float, together with Santa and his little helpers, distributed sweets to children to the sounds of festive music, visited most parts of Maghull as well as some of

Just as the Mondeo’s getting its groove back, it’s taken away!

SAY hello to the new Ford Mondeo. Or to be more accurate, say Ni Hao. Apologies if I’ve offended any Mandarinspeaking Champion readers with that hastily googled translation, but you do at least get the new Mondeo as ample compensation. You see, the fifth generation of Ford’s motorway milemuncher has just been launched in China – and that’s pretty much where it’s staying. There are no plans to bring it here, or to any markets in continental Europe, or Uncle Henry’s homeland in the US, for that matter.

This new Mondeo has definitely been fine-

It’s also been designed not for Mondeo Man – the hard-pressed family guy stereotype very publicly courted by Tony Blair in the run-up to the 1997 General Election – but specifically for drivers in the People’s Republic. It’s been designed there too, at Ford’s China Design Centre in Shanghai, and it’s going to be built there too, by Chang’an Ford, a 50/50 joint venture between the Blue Oval and China’s very own Chang’an Automobile, based in Chongqing.

However, it’s widely rumoured that some of the new Mondeo’s oily bits could come to the UK under the skin of the new Evos, which is – you guessed it – a five-door crossover.

Nothing’s been confirmed officially yet, but word on the street is that it’s going to be kitted out with either a 1.5-litre or two-litre petrol unit, both using hybrid tech to keep the emissions down.

Chinese market is lots of rear legroom, so it’s hardly surprising that while the Mondeo’s a little longer and a little wider than the one it replaces, most of the hard work has been done on stretching the wheelbase by 104mm, so that even Peter Crouch can get comfy in its back seats. The other big ask is lots of tech, and it’s got that too, with a full-width digital dashboard and software from Chinese tech giant Baidu.

But the thing that makes this one a Chinese takeaway that I’d definitely want to order in is that it looks terrific. I know car design is a very subjective thing, but I suspect what’s considered a looker on the streets of Shanghai is probably going to cut it in Southport or Seaforth too. The old Mondeo, which bows out in March, isn’t exactly unattractive but the coupé roofline, Mustang-esque kicked up rear and door handles that could have been nicked straight off a Jaguar iPace all make this Mondeo, in my book at least, the most enticing one so far. Yet it’s the only one, because you’ve all been buying BMWs and Qashqais instead, that we’re not allowed to have.

Shame. Just when it looks like the Mondeo’s getting its groove back, it’s been taken away from us, but there’s still time to change your mind, Uncle Henry. I’ll have mine in ST220 spec, please.
