MP voices opposition to Post Office franchise plan ROSIE Cooper has voiced her opposition to plans to run Ormskirk Post Office as a franchise. The Post Office moved its base from its building on Aughton Street to the back of the W H Smith on Moor Street in February 2017 - much to the disappointment of many customers, it’s claimed. Now the Post Office intend to switch from W H Smith being a host to a franchisee. West Lancs MP, Ms Cooper commented: “Residents and customers are rightly worried by what seems to be an increasingly privatised and watereddown Post Office service.

“Unions have also contacted me concerned for their staff’s futures. “Our Post Office is owned by the taxpayers and the franchising of our branches to private operators risks losing control over the quality of service, the treatment of staff and the hours of business. “I have written to the Post Office and W H Smith to oppose this franchising and also to the Business Secretary to ask him to use his influence to stop this and protect our local Post Office branches.” A Post Office spokesperson responded: “Ormskirk Post Office will remain where it is, with the same

wide range of Post Office services and longer opening hours to offer more convenience for customers. “The Post Office branch will be run by W H Smith on a franchise basis in order to safeguard our services for the future. The vast majority of Post Office branches, large and small, are run as franchises with retailers because it is sustainable. “We take the utmost care supporting our staff and we are talking with them about the changes and their potential options. These include the right to transfer their employment in line with TUPE legislation.”

MODEST TEEN SAVED OAP’S LIFE AFTER DOUBLE HEART ATTACK

INSIDE THIS WEEK...

Prepare for winter -call

Air cadet Jack used first aid skills to tend to 83-year-old until ambulance arrived

Report by Kenny Parker A PENSIONER who suffered a double heart attack while waiting at a bus stop has paid tribute to two strangers whose quick thinking probably saved his life. Modest teenager Jack Lloyd applied first aid at the scene, while an unknown woman who realised how serious the situation was quickly phoned an ambulance. The 83-year-old, who wishes to be known only as Frank, was on his way home to Rufford from Burscough when he suddenly collapsed. Thankfully there were a number of people on hand to give assistance, including 17-year-old Jack from Tarleton who used his first aid skills to take care of him until the ambulance arrived. And by a strange quirk of fate, the two had one thing in a common. Frank served in the RAF during the 1950s, while Jack is a cadet with the 1026 (Ormskirk) Squadron Air Training Corps.

Jack said: “Frank was sat on the floor leaning against the bus shelter. I asked him what had happened and a lady behind me said he had fallen over. I asked another lady to call an ambulance but she had already done this. “As I had been trained in first aid I started to assess Frank. It wasn’t a particularly hot day but when I asked him

how he was feeling he said he was very hot and had beads of sweat on his forehead. I asked him to describe what had happened and he said that he had collapsed and fallen over and when he tried to get back up he had collapsed again. “From my assessment I believed he’d suffered a heart attack or something similar as he was also complaining of chest pains, breathing heavily and was cradling his left arm and saying it felt numb. “I took his pulse and that seemed OK but I carried on with first aid by raising his legs and propping him up and continued to monitor him while waiting for the ambulance. “I got chatting with him to try and keep him calm and Frank told me he had been an armourer in the RAF and lived on a canal boat with his wife. “I told him I was an air cadet and we were chatting for quite a while until the emergency services arrived. “I told the ambulance crew what had

happened and what I had done and they took him to hospital. I thanked the paramedics and went on with my day.” Speaking to the Champion, Frank said he was told by ambulance staff that he’d had two heart attacks. The retired joiner was taken to Liverpool’s Broadgreen Hospital. He said he particularly wanted to thank Jack and also a woman of about 30, who had two young children with her. “I never got a chance to thank anybody,” he said. Meanwhile student Jack was reluctant to have any attention drawn to his good deed and had to be persuaded by others to have his story told. Flight lieutenant Sue Routledge of Ormskirk 1026 Squadron said that the modest student, who hopes to join the RAF, is an “outstanding cadet”, who has achieved the rank of sergeant. She said he used the ‘heart start’ skills from a first aid course that all new cadets undertake.
