NO GREEN LIGHT FOR TRAFFIC LIGHT CAMERAS AT DANGER JUNCTIONS! Report by Kenny Parker THERE are no immediate plans to install traffic light cameras at a notorious accident hotspot in Ormskirk - despite two petitions and recent dashcam footage showing an articulated lorry travelling straight through a red light without slowing down! Seperate petitions calling for traffic light cameras at the Fiveways and Hayfield junctions on County Road have been taken by the Our West Lancashire independent political group and local resident, Maxine Mortimer, collecting 500 and 252 signatures respectively. They were launched to coincide with a consultation run by Lancashire County Council to reduce the speed limit on the road following the deaths of two motorists in the last 10 months and numerous accidents reported over the last six years. The consultation ended on September 12. However Ormskirk ward County Councillor Nikki Hennessy, who along with West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper had called for the speed limit consultation, said that there won’t be any traffic lights cameras installed any time soon. Cllr. Hennessy said that red light enforcement
is under the responsibility of the Speed Tasking Group - a partnership which includes Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Constabulary- and she added: “Currently, there are no plans for immediate installation of red light enforcement cameras and there are none in operation throughout the whole of Lancashire. “The police are looking into new technologies in order for the cameras to be reliable, costeffective and functioning accurately and are currently running trials. “I have forwarded Maxine Mortimer’s e-petition to the police for consideration as and when the cameras are at implementation stage. Concerns
“I have also invited an officer from the LCC’s Speed Management Team to attend the next Police and Communities Together meeting for Knowsley and Scott Ward so that we can talk through the various suggestions. “I am conscious of the considerable cuts that austerity has imposed on Lancashire Police and Lancashire County Council and how this is limiting officer support in the community but I will continue to work to keep our community safe.”
And Cllr. Hennessy is encouraging residents to email their concerns to her at nikki.hennessy2@lancashire.gov.uk so that she can put them directly to county council officers and cabinet members. Meanwhile, reader Sarah Vesty who supplied dashcam footage to the Champion of a truck running a red light at the Hayfield junction says she would have been killed had she not been turning left on to County Road. “There might not have been an accident at this time but if I hadn’t have been turning I would definitely be dead by now. He is travelling way faster than he should be. I have contacted the police but I don’t think anything will be done. We need to do something about this junction and at the Five Ways because this is now taking peoples lives!” Kate Mitchell, spokesperson for Our West Lancashire in Knowsley ward, said: “OWL and the majority of the residents we spoke to believe it is essential that enforcement cameras are installed as a matter of urgency to reduce further unnecessary crashes resulting in injuries and fatalities. “I refrain from using the word ‘accidents’ as drivers who willfully carry on through a red light are not doing it by ‘accident’! It is a deliberate and selfish action on their part.”
