Karen’s ‘super-human’ swim raises £35k for Alder Hey!
Karen Ennis after her Catalina Channel swim
ALDER Hey Children’s Charity has celebrated the efforts of a West Lancs woman who is aiming to raise £100,000 for the cause by swimming the seven toughest stretches of water in the world, describing her as ‘superhuman’. Karen Ennis, from Burscough, has already raised £35,008 for the hospital after swimming two of the so called Oceans Seven. She swam the English Channel two years ago, and the 22-mile Catalina Channel off Los Angeles, USA, four weeks ago. Only 16 people have ever completed the Oceans Seven and Karen hopes to be the first British woman to do so. Continued inside

Council sets its stall out... and tells town’s market traders ‘provide your own stands - and put them up’
DO IT YOURSELVES! Report by Kenny Parker
Ormskirk Outdoor Market.
Established 41 Years
TRADERS at Ormskirk’s outdoor market have been told the council is to stop providing stalls for them and, in a double whammy, council workers will no longer be responsible for erecting their stalls. Currently, West Lancs Borough Council staff provide the stalls and put them in place for the market traders but this will end next April. The controversial move has been approved by the council’s cabinet but has been criticised by members of Our West Lancs group. The council has defended the decision, however, saying that it brings the market into line with other markets and that it was reached with the agreement of the traders. However, the Champion believes not all stall holders at Ormskirk market are happy with the
pending arrangements and think the decision could have a ‘negative impact’. Some traders say they already have a long day travelling and setting out their wares and many of them come long distances to take part. They point out that having to provide their own stalls and put them up will ‘completely change’ their working day. One disgruntled trader who asked not to be named said that packing damp or wet coverings in their van alongside stock could be ‘a huge problem’ as well as the sheer logistics of transporting the stalls and erecting/dismantling them. There are fears that the moves could see the market decrease in size. The news has also alarmed visitors to the market. Martin Pagett, from Aughton, said he was dismayed to learn that one market trader he visits regularly says he will no longer be at the market once the new rules come into play. Continued inside
