A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Since being made aware of the issues within this flat, we have tried to work with the landlord, informally, to get the matter resolved in line with our Housing Standards enforcement procedure.“However, despite us being in regular contact with them, the landlord has not responded to this approach, so we are now considering taking formal action. “In addition, we have worked with Mr McCarthy on his application to Property Pool Plus to find alternative accommodation.“Thecounciltries to work with landlords to resolve issues like this but if they refuse to make the required improvements, we will take action against them.“This can be in the form of a formal Notice, which if not complied with can result in prosecutioneither or the ser vice of a Civil Penalty Fine notice up to a maximum of £30,000.”

A RESPITEholiday centre in Southport is set to expand with more rooms to be built. Sandpipers, which is run by the charity Revitalise, has been granted planning per mission by Sefton Council to increase the number of bedrooms from 37 to 50. Revitalise is a national charity and has been providing respite care across three holiday centres, including Southport, for disabled people and carers for 60 years. A planning application submitted by the charity states: “For our 60th birthday cel ebrations, our Board of Trustees have put the stake in the ground for us to embark on an ambitious and exciting redevelop ment plan. The goal being to create centres of excellence in accessible design and care support for people with disabilit ies including innovative technological development.“Thisincludes the redevelopment of Sandpipers, Southport. “It is a site of the most incredible poten tial, and so our plans include increasing the current capacity to 50, maximising the beautiful location and adding incredible accessible facilities for disabled people to enjoy a truly restorative break.”

Police estimate that Class Aand B drugs, valued atmore than£6m,wereeither suppliedoroffered for supply by the gangbetween April and June 2020.Ajoint investigationbetween Merseyside Police and NorthWales Police uncoveredthe distribution of the drugs across England, Wales and Scotland by the organised crime group . Two of the group were also part of a conspiracy to possess and supply prohibited firearms. Theevidence linkedthe groupto premisesnear the North Wales bordernear Chester and evidence of Class A and B drug dealing around the Maghull area.TheNorth Walesinvestigationwas focusedupon a drugs lab in Sealandwhich was used to produce amphetamine on a multi-million-pound commer cial scale and on occasions to produce or attempt to produce other Class B drugs. Astorage unitin theAintree areahad alsobeen used by the group to store a large quantity of chem icals and equipmentrelating toamphetamine production.PaulMount, Anthony Saunderson and Darren Owens, wereall the principal organisersin the group andwere allinvolved inthe wholesaledeal ing of controlled drugs on a massive scale. Anthony Saunderson, 42, from the Formby area, was involved inthe directing and organisingof the production of amphetamine andthe buying and selling on an industrial scale. He was also involved in the supply of Class A con trolled drugs and evidencelinked him to a conspiracy tosell ortransfer prohibitedweapons including a Grandpower handgun,a Glock hand gun and a CZ firearm with associated ammunition. ‘Industrial scale’ Saunderson, wasconvicted ofconspiracy topro duce and supply drugs including cocaine and heroin andconspiracy to sell ortransfer prohibited weapons. He was jailed for a total of 35 years. Mount, 38, from theHalsall area, was convicted of conspiracy to produce and supply drugs and con spiracy to acquire or purchase a prohibited weapon. He was jailed for a total of 34 years. Owens, 48, from Huyton, was involved in the pro duction and supply of amphetamine and assisted in providingvanswhen requiredtoassistSaunderson and Mount in arranging for chemicals and drugs to be moved into the premises in Aintree. He wasconvicted ofconspiracy toproduce and supply drugs and was jailed for a total of 24 years. Michael Pope, 35, from Maghull, was convicted of conspiracy to supply drugs and was jailed for 17 years and six KieranHartley,months.32,ofMossSide, Liverpool,was jailedfor atotal of23years; LeeEccles, 33,from Maghull, wasjailed fora totalof eightyears and nineDavidKelly,months. 44,fromMaghull,used abreakdown recovery truck to transport cash and drugs across the country. He was jailed for a total of 15 years and threeStefonmonths.Beeby,42, formerlyof theHalifax area, was jailed for 15 years and six months, while Stephen Shearwood, 38, from the Maghull area was jailed for a total of 14 years and four months. A10th man,Connor Smith,29, fromMaghull, will be sentenced on September 22.

The Liverpool City Region rail network and Northern are both affected by Network Rail signalling and mainten ance employees taking industrial action on thoseMerseyraildays. will run an hourly service calling at selected stations on each line between 7.30am and 6.30pm on both days to help passengers make essential journeys. On Merseyrail’sSouthport line,trains will run hourly, only calling at Southport, Formby, Blun dellsands & Crosby, Waterloo, Moorfields and Liverpool Central. On the Ormskirk line, trains will run hourly, only calling at Ormskirk, Maghull North, Maghull, Aintree, Kirkdale, Moor fields and Liverpool Central.Therewill be no trains on the Merseyrail net work before 7.30am or after 6.30pm on Thursday, August 18 or Saturday, August 20. Due to lack of availabil ity, there are no railreplacement buses on either day. Passengers should make alternative travel arrangements where necessary. On Friday, August 19, trains will be gradually reintroduced from 7am, when the first 24-hour strike ends. SOUTHPORT Piano & Music Academy held one of the first concerts at the recently opened ‘The Grand’ venue. The concert included nine performances by a mix of academy teachers and stu dents, including three aged 10, 11, and 13. A mixture of instruments were used alongside the piano, including a clarinet performance by Jasmine Lind say.The Academy organised the event to showcase the talents of the students to Southport MP Damien Moore and were met with applause from the audience and high praise from the MP, who said: “I can not understate how wonderful all the perform ances were. “It’s not easy performing in front of crowds, but the stu dents handled each of their pieces perfectly. They are a credit to their teachers, who also performed at the event, and I know that this view is shared by all those who atten ded.”Established in 2013 by Clare Kelly, the academy has raised more than £13,000 for charit able causes over the years, with a recent ‘ year finale’ variety show raising £800 in aid of Churchtown’s Botanic Gardens. The shouldbe mandatorybefore thereis areal water shortagelike in manyparts of theworldthink long term, think ahead. Trees, shrubs/bushes and hedgerows should also be put in as an essential part of the planning process when applying to build.Every house built should havea minimumamount plantedon everyprop erty.With allthe amount of unnecessarybuilding of houses ongreen belt the councilsand Government are directly contributing to the problem. The countryside is being ruinedfor all of us and for future generations and purely for greed. Isn’t this thereason whywehave agreen beltsoit isprotec ted?Themore youbuild thewarmerthe planetwill get. And, I suspect, so do you, given the amount of you I’ve seen out and about in secondhand Audi A4 Convertibles and Golf Cabriolets during the latest heatwave. CHANCES are it’s probably chucking it down by the time you read this week’s Champion, but as this is being written it’s 32 degrees – which means it’s time to trot out all the summer cliches. Ladies wearing skimpy tops. Blokes not wearing tops at all. But not, to cut short a time-honoured tradition gracing newsagents for several decades, motoring magazines proclaiming it’s time to GO TOPLESS while parading bargain-priced convertibles across theirI’mcovers.nottalking MX-5s or Z4s or other two-seater sports cars; I’m on about cheap ‘n’ cheerful, family-friendly droptops based on decapitated versions of the nation’s big sellers. I suspect I know the reason why they aren’t doing the rounds in the motoring mags right now. Put simply, with a handful of exceptions, there aren’t any. Less than a decade ago I remember roadtesting Volkswagen’s Golf MkVI Cabriolet in e Champion’s pages, but nowadays there is no open-air spino of Europe’s bestseller – instead, the only droptop it’ll sell you is an open-top T-Roc, for which you need at least £31k. Ford will no longer og you an al fresco Focus and Vauxhall’s Astra Cabriolet is long gone, as its successor of sorts, the Cascada. Peugeot made a name for itself in the Noughties with SLK-esque folding metal roofs, but neither the 208 nor the 308 carry on this ni y feature. Nor does Renault, which in the Nineties would sell you a Megane in Convertible form – and a hatch, saloon, estate,
