CARE HOME OWNER’S CRUEL SCHEME TO FLEECE PENSIONERS Fraudster who used residents’ money to buy multiple properties and fleet of luxury cars jailed for 21 years
Report by Kenny Parker A COURT has heard how the boss of a luxury care home poisoned the mind of a wealthy West Lancs pensioner against her own family in order to steal her fortune. David Barton, owner of the Barton Park Nursing Home in Southport, has been jailed for 21 years for stealing from and defrauding more than £4 million in total from six residents over 17 years. The 64-year-old used the money to buy multiple properties in the resort, along with a fleet of luxury cars, including four Ferraris and three Rolls Royces! Among his victims were Gordon and Katie Willey from Briars Lane, Lathom. Gordon had Alzheimer’s when he entered the home and Barton succeeded in driving a wedge between Katie and her loving family. When he appeared for sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court prosecutor Benjamin Myers said Barton’s offences came to light when he attempted to sue Mrs Willey’s estate, following her death in 2013, initially for £10 million, including VAT; and then for a revised amount of £6.4m. Barton claimed that he had finalised a ‘life agreement’ deal with Mrs Willey worth at least £5.5m in return for a lifetime of care and accommodation. However, the claim was fraudulent.

Among other outrageous claims made to the civil court was the “alternative assertion” that the Willeys had agreed to pay £25,000 per day to take Gordon Willey for drives in luxury cars as a means of managing his dementia. In total Barton said the drives Mr Willey had enjoyed amounted to £7.2m (including VAT). Eventually Barton agreed to settle that case for £640,000 but he was made to pay £440,000 for the
defendants’ legal costs. The solicitor representing the family, Amanda Noyce, also handed details to police. The crown court heard that the Willeys had moved into Barton Park in 2011 when Gordon was 80 and Katie, who was 75, had developed a serious heart complaint and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. “They were multi-millionaires and it was obvious that they were extremely wealthy” said Mr Myers, adding that although childless, the couple had a large and loving family and circle of friends. Over a period of two years though, Barton would alienate Mrs Willey from her loved ones by a devastating combination of menacing solicitors’ letters to family members, blocked telephone and personal contact, and a campaign of poisoning her mind towards them. He even employed a self-styled intuitive counsellor and psychic consultant to cast spells on the family to banish them. The nursing home owner did this with the “vigorous support” of 69-year-old general manager Rosemary Booth, of Hesketh Drive, Southport, who became a surrogate friend to Katie Willey. She was jailed for six years. In total, Barton stole £900K in excess fees from the Willeys. Continued inside
Church set for £500k makeover
PARISHIONERS at an Ormskirk church are looking forward to a brighter future after raising nearly £500k for a major refurbishment.
