l Altcar Moss where Aurora Energy Resources want to frack for shale gas.

Report by Kenny Parker CAMPAIGNERS opposed to fracking in West Lancashire have said they are prepared for the fight after Aurora Energy Resources confirmed it will be submitting an application to Lancashire County Council to drill a well site at Altcar Moss. Aurora is proposing to drill, hydraulically fracture and test two exploratory boreholes on the Moss to evaluate the potential to produce hydrocarbons from deeply buried Carboniferous-age rocks. The energy company was originally meant to have submitted a planning application by last September but was granted an extension by the Oil

and GasAuthority. It has not said when the application will be submitted though it must be done by September this year. Once validated by the county council, the application will be open for public consultation. Moss Alliance, made up of groups opposed to fracking at Altcar Moss, has said it has been expecting the application and has the resources to oppose it. West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper has also given her support for the anti-fracking campaign. Ian Roche, managing director of Aurora Energy

Resources, said: “The Altcar Moss project looks to open a new chapter in the hydrocarbon story of West Lancashire, which has an exploration and production history dating back over 80 years. “If successful, the development of a significant new indigenous energy resource would provide an important contribution to both the regional and national economies through the growth in highskilled jobs, supply chain opportunities, and tax and business rate receipts. “The recent Committee for Climate Change report recognised that natural gas will continue to play an important role in UK energy supply beyond 2050. The UK must maximise production of our own resources, including natural gas from shale, to reduce our increasing dependency on expensive imports, which is currently set to reach 70% of UK demand by 2030.” Continued inside
