Royal invite for village lollipop lady
Doreen Lavin (right) and her sister Sheila Marley at the Queen's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace
A LONG-SERVING West Lancs lollipop lady who recently received civic recognition for her contribution to road safety in the borough has now received the Royal seal of approval to add to the honour. Doreen Lavin, 70, from Burscough, was invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace having been anonymously nominated for her 38 years of dedicated service in West Lancashire. Since October 1983, in all weathers, Doreen Lavin has
been helping pupils from Burscough’s three primary schools to safely cross the road in her role as a school crossing patrol officer. Last summer, she was presented with a framed certificate and a bouquet of flowers by Mayor and Mayoress of West Lancs, Councillor Neil and Mrs Julie Furey, at a special reception in the mayor’s room attended by family and friends. Donning her frock and fascinator she travelled down to London, accompanied by her

sister Sheila Marley. Once inside, Doreen mingled with over 8,000 guests and was offered tea, finger-sandwiches and slices of cakes. Present at the party was the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Cambridge, and Princess Eugenie. Every year The Queen hosts parties at the palace as a way to recognise and reward public service. The appreciated lollipop lady said: “It was beautiful and the food was marvellous!”
