‘BRIDGE PLAN WILL CAUSE TRAFFFIC CHAOS’ - CLAIM
Local councillor says county’s one-lane proposal for Derby Street structure will leave vehicles at a standstill and increase air pollution in town Report by Kenny Parker AN Ormskirk councillor says plans by Lancashire County Council to restrict traffic to one lane on the Derby Street railway bridge as part of works to fix the 170-year-old structure will result in chaos and increased air pollution. And County Councillor Nikki Hennessy, Labour representative for the town has accused the authority’s Conservative administration of seeking to do the work ‘on the cheap’ instead of building another bridge. However, the council’s cabinet member for highways, County Councillor Keith Iddon, says the proposals have nothing to do with cost but are about balancing traffic flow, pedestrian safety and the conservation order on the bridge. The bridge has been subject to an 18-ton limit since 2015 after inspections on the listed building found it was crumbling internally. It also has limited pedestrian footway access to and from the railway station, with many reports of pedestrians

being clipped by wing mirrors and near misses. A report by engineering consultants Jacobs, commissioned by the county council states that the bridge could be repaired with a resin infusion at a cost of £1 million. However, to improve pedestrian safety, it is also proposed to reduce traffic to one lane. A traffic survey is now being undertaken and the county council intends to have a trial run with a single lane across the

bridge to monitor the effect this would have. Cllr. Hennessy pointed out though that the trial could take place in August, “which just happens to be when traffic is at its lowest due to holidays.” And she said: “The alternative to LCC proposals, would be a new bridge, which would maintain two lanes with built-in safe footpaths and crossing points to the railway station. It would also be constructed of Continued inside
“I heard about it a few weeks ago but you are sworn to secrecy and it has been a difficult secret to keep! “While I am very proud to accept it, the credit is most definitely shared with my team and other colleagues across HMRC who have worked hard to deliver this agenda, and of course our apprentices and line managers without whom we would have no programme. “We have come a long way to deliver a large and complex programme and we continue to learn as we go. “I am really looking forward to seeing how we develop our programmes even further. am so pleased that apprenticeships in general are getting recognition at this level too.” Vickie was one of 1,073 recipients from all walks of life across the UK who were recognised. The Queen’s Birthday Honours list is traditionally announced on her ‘official’ birthday which was June 8. The list recognises the achievements of people from the UK and throughout the Commonweath with hundreds of campaigners and volunteers given awards with some 75% recognised for work in their community.
