Cancer service information unit coming to town Skem man, 23, pleads guilty to plotting to murder Rosie Cooper A 23-year-old man from Skelmersdale pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey yesterday (Tuesday) to plotting to murder West Lancs MP, Rosie Cooper. Last summer, Jack Renshaw bought a Gladius machete to kill Ms Cooper. On the first day of a trial, expected to last five weeks, Renshaw, an alleged member of the banned far-right group National Action, also pleaded guilty to preparing acts of terrorism and making a threat to kill police officer Victoria Henderson. National Action is a neo-Nazi group which was banned by the Home Secretary after it backed the murder of MP Jo Cox in 2016. The jury in the case have been directed by the judge, Mr Justice Jay, to deliver a guilty verdict on the first two charges Renshaw faces. Also on trial are Matthew Hankinson, 24, from Newton-leWillows; Andrew Clarke, 33, from Prescot; Christopher Lythgoe, 32, and Michal Trubini, 35, both from Warrington; and Garron Helm, 24, from Seaforth. All deny membership of National Action. Lythgoe also denies a charge that he gave Renshaw permission to murder the MP on behalf of National Action on July 1, 2017. Prosecutor, Duncan Atkinson QC, said at the start of the case:

MP Rosie Cooper.

“This case concerns these defendants and their support for, involvement in and membership of the proscribed racist neo-Nazi group National Action.” The prosecutor continued to say that Renshaw wanted to carry out an act which was “politically and racially motivated murder” in the name of National Action. He went on to claim Renshaw had the backing of Lythgoe. According to Mr Atkinson, National Action have since 2013 carried out a “campaign of virulent anti-Semitic and homophobic propaganda.” He added the group recruit youths through violent images and “hate-filled language.” The prosecutor said the defendants carried on being members of National Action after it was banned. The case continues.

AN award-winning West Lancs-based charity which employs young people with disabilities to recycle donated mobility equipment will be forced to close in August unless £50,000 can be found to secure its future. Brighter Future Workshop, which is based at Greenhey Place in Skelmersdale, opened for business in 2005 and since then has won a host of awards. These include a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development; Best Social Enterprise England; Best Social Enterprise UK; Best Social Firm in Europe; Deloitte Innovation Pioneers; and The Big Society Award. The charity was also honoured in October 2012 by a visit from The Countess of Wessex. Peter Cousins MBE, chairman of Brighter Future Workshop, said: “We are fighting to keep Brighter Future going - it’s too good to lose - and we are looking for any help we can get to ensure we save it. “We want to encourage those people that we set out to help, to use our charity to purchase their mobility needs. “By doing this they will be supporting the training of young people with physical or learning disabilities within our workshop. “There are potentially 28,000 people

with disabilities or long-term needs in West Lancs. In buying from Brighter Future you will enable us to connect with and support these young disabled people to have better lives. “Local businesses could help by providing corporate sponsorship to help with our overheads; or individuals or groups could sponsor a trainee or a technician to train the trainees at Brighter Future. This help would be greatly received and could save our charity. “We earn 92% of our costs and if we

could find £50k we could guarantee our survival.” The charity provides a wide range of mobility scooters, wheelchairs and disability aids. Since its foundation Brighter Future has trained more than 350 young disabled people during more than 120,000 training hours. And its trainees have helped to refurbish more than 35,000 pieces of mobility equipment to help the disabled. Continued inside
