SCHOOL CAMPAIGNERS SEEKING LEGAL BID TO BLOCK ACADEMY PLAN
PARENTS and supporters campaigning to prevent a historic school from being made into an academy are taking legal advice after accusing the Government of failing to carry out a legal consultation. Plans to convert Ormskirk School into an academy, highlighted in the Champion in November last year, were set in motion in the wake of two damning reports by education standards regulator, Ofsted. The Wigan Road school was rated as ‘requires improvement’ by inspectors in March, 2017, and following a further inspection in May 2019 it was deemed ‘inadequate’. However, supporters of the 400year-old establishment opposed to the change called for Ofsted to return and give the school “a fair crack of the whip”, describing the timing of the second inspection as unfair as a new headteacher had only recently been appointed and needed time to turn things around. The, group - Save Ormskirk School drew attention to the signs of improvement noted in the second Ofsted report.

They also claim that many academies are run to make profits rather than provide the best education for the children. Now, with the Government forging ahead with plans for the conversion into an academy, the group are taking legal advice, saying the decision is unfounded, commercially-led and potentially illegal due to a lack of a proper consultation by the Department for Education (DfE) and Regional Schools Commissioner (RSC). A spokesman for Save Ormskirk School said: ‘Control of our school is due to be handed over to a Multi Academy Trust (MAT). The school will no longer be in charge of its own destiny and 400 years of history will be handed over to some faceless commercial enterprise. “Many MATs are run not on the principle of enabling every child to achieve their full potential, but by a desire to divert school budgets into ‘fat cat’ managers’ pockets. examples all over the country of academy heads and managers getting outrageous six-figure salaries, paid at the expense of school budgets and there is no guarantee that the same won’t happen to Ormskirk School. “The school’s Foundation Trust owns the land on which the school is situated and opposes the forced academisation of the school. If the foundation governors refuse to sign a lease, the RSC could, under obscure schedules hidden within the legislation, ‘steal the land’ from the
foundation, which is totally unacceptable. “Foundation money is also used to support and help Ormskirk pupils, by providing much-needed grants and money for things like travel and sports equipment. All of this will potentially go into the pockets of the academy sponsor.” Calling on the Regional Schools Commissioner to reconsider and allow more time for improvements, the spokesperson added: “Ormskirk Continued on Page 3

Family and friends of James Draper with the cheque for mental health charity, Mind.
Family ’s fundraiser in memory of James
THE partner and family of a West Lancs man who committed suicide last year have raised more than £18,000 for a mental health charity in his memory. James Draper tragically took his own life in January 2019. It is believed that he had undiagnosed mental health problems. To mark what would have been his 34th birthday his partner, Steph, organised a fundraiser for mental health charity Mind while also raising awareness of mental health issues, in particular those affecting young men. The event was well supported by local businesses and the community who provided raffle and auction prizes, along with donations to an online fundraising page. James’s father, Alan, managing director of Bickerstaffe-based top soil supplier and haulier R. Draper Ltd., said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generous donations to raise money for the charity Mind in memory of James. We were overwhelmed by the support. “On the night we managed to raise in excess of £18,000. If this, in turn, helps save even one life and one family suffering, it will be truly worth it.”
