Olivia’s role in hospital research

TEENAGER WHO BEAT CANCER HAS DESIGNS ON FASHION SUCCESS Report by Danielle Thompson A TALENTED teenager from West Lancashire is making a name for himself in the highly competitive world of fashion. Freedom Doran is turning on the style by launching his own clothing label, having previously landed a leading role in a TV drama...and all after successfully battling stomach cancer! The 16-year-old from Haskayne featured in the Sky 10-part thriller The Five in April 2016, when he played the younger version of main character Danny in flashback scenes. And the former Formby High School pupil then launched his own clothing company, Marzenie, a collection of t-shirts, hoodies, caps and swimwear, later that year. But he had to close it in November 2017, aged just 15, when he was diagnosed with lower stomach cancer at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. After undergoing an operation and six months’ of intense chemotherapy treatment the determined youngster started planning a new fashion, home and beauty company, Nethrial while also studying for his GCSEs. And less than a week after his chemotherapy treatment finished in May last year he took his exams, achieving 3A*s, 4As and 2Bs! He then made the decision to fully focus on Nethrial and attended London Fashion Week and trade shows across Europe, meeting a host

of big-name celebrities along the way. Nethrial, which aims to be a one-stop online shop for 13 to 34-year-olds, was finally launched online on Friday, February 22 with a launch party in Manchester planned for later this year. Freedom is mentored by Nitin Passi, owner of Missguided and was also named as the winner of the Special Young Person Award at the Pride of Formby Awards. He told the Champion: “I had already launched Marzenie and was doing my GCSEs when my GP sent me to Alder Hey where they found that I had stomach cancer. “I was operated on the next day and went straight into chemo but I am not the kind of person who can sit around so when I wasn’t revising I was planning out my business. “I met Nitin Passi when I did my work experience for school in the graphic design department of the company and I spent the summer holidays there and also worked from home for them too. I am so delighted to be mentored by him. “Having something to focus on really helped me during my chemotherapy to keep a positive mindset. “I am now at the City of Liverpool College doing fashion, business and retail but I mostly submit my work from home as I am really concentrating on Nethrial and I want to go from 50 brands to around 300, to make it a really encompassing one-stop shop.”
