Community fundraiser receives thank you letter from the Queen for efforts during first lockdown A SEFTON man has been sent a special thank you from the Queen for his efforts during the first lockdown.

A HARD-HITTING four-week lockdown comes into force from tomorrow, Thursday, in a bid to bring rising numbers of coronavirus cases back under control.

The measures will remain in place until Wednesday, December 2, although there are fears the lockdown could be extended further.

It will mean: l People will be told to stay at home except for education, work (if it can't be done from home), exercise and recreation, medical reasons, shopping for food and other essentials, or to care for others l All pubs and restaurants will have to close (but takeaways and deliveries can continue) l All non-essential shops will have to close (but supermarkets can sell nonessential goods) l Households will not be allowed to mix with others indoors, or in private gardens l Schools, colleges and universities will remain open l Workplaces will be asked to stay open if people cannot work from home including construction and manufacturing

l Outdoor exercise and recreation will be allowed, but gyms will have to close l Clinically vulnerable advised not to go to work if they are unable to work from home l Individuals can meet one person from outside their household in an outside public space l Support bubbles for people who live alone and households made up of single parents and children can continue l Children will be able to move between homes if their parents are separated.

Researchers at Walton Centre begin study on effects of coronavirus

RESEARCHERS from The Walton Centre have been tasked with investigating the neurological and neuropsychiatric effects of Covid-19.

A grant worth £2.3million has been awarded to The Walton Centre, University of Liverpool and King’s College London to complete The COVID-19 Clinical Neuroscience Study (COVID -CNS).

It will look at 800 UK patients who were admitted to hospital with coronavirus and had neurological or neuropsychiatric complications, to understand how these problems occur and develop strategies to prevent and treat them.

Project co-lead, Dr Benedict Michael, consultant neurologist at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust and senior clinical scientist fellow at the University of Liverpool, said: “Coronavirus patients frequently suffer brain complications during the infection and are left with brain injuries which can have life-long consequences.

“Similar problems have been seen in previous pandemics, including Spanish influenza over 100 years ago, but how and why this occurs is poorly understood.

“Without understanding how the virus causes these problems, we are not able to know which existing medications to use or to develop new medications to treat these neurological effects.

“We’re going to look at cases in detail, exploring clinical data, and laboratory and imaging markers of brain inflammation and injury.”

Calls made for more support for stranded seafarers CROSBY-based charity, the Liverpool Seafarers Centre, has called on the UK government and shipping lines to follow the lead of New Zealand and allocate greater funding for seafarers centres.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has pledged to pursue legislation to fund seafarers centres in its ports, allowing government port fees to be used to care for seafarers.

The Crosby charity believes this approach should be followed in the UK due to the continuing Covid-19 situation, which has left about 400,000 seafarers stranded at sea due to travel restrictions.

With no end in sight, charity chief executive John Wilson believes more provision should be in place at ports to offer support to seafarers when they leave their vessels.

He has made continuous calls during the pandemic for governments to designate seafarers as key workers to allow them greater rights by removing restrictions on flights, travel and medical care, as well as implementing protocols to allow safe crew changes, echoing calls made by the International Maritime Organization.

Mr Wilson said: “We are pleased to hear of the New Zealand government turning its attention to the plight of seafarers by offering greater support when they are in ports.

“It is clear that the coronavirus pandemic is not going away quickly so we need to make sure that those seafarers that are serving on ships are provided for when they do go ashore.

“Seafarers work tirelessly to bring supplies to our shores and it is only right that they have the time and space to spend some down time outside of their duties on board. Seafarers centres like our also offer support in the form of access to Wi-Fi, money exchange and emotional support, as well as acting as a mediator between seafarers and their employers.

“We believe passionately that the UK government should be following New Zealand’s lead and we also call for shipping companies to go further to support the wellbeing of their crews.”

£1.5m fund to help taxi drivers through pandemic TAXI drivers in Sefton will be given financial support to help them cope with the impact coronavirus has had on their fares.

With less and less people needing taxis, local drivers have suffered during the pandemic.

Last week, Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council, along with Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, city Mayor Joe Anderson and other Liverpool City Region Council leaders, revealed a £1.5million fund to support taxi drivers.

The money will be spread across the six local authorities in the city region, including Sefton, to enable them to give grants to hard-pressed taxi drivers.

The funding will be allocated proportionately to each local authority, according to the number of licenced taxi drivers in their area.

It will enable Sefton to introduce and administer schemes which benefit local taxi drivers in addition to what is available to them through national support schemes.

Cllr Maher, said: “I recognise that the last few months have been exceptionally difficult for Sefton taxi drivers, and I hope that this new fund will go some way to easing the financial pressure taxi drivers are facing.

“In addition to this fund, the Sefton Council website has lots of information and advice about what

other funding and financial support may be available for taxi drivers, and other self-employed business owners in Sefton. For example, the Self Employment Support Scheme will allow you to claim a taxable grant worth 80% of your trading profits up to a maximum of £2,500 per month for three months, although may be extended if needed. You can apply if you’re a self-employed individual or a member of a partnership.

“I know that taxi drivers who have fallen on hard times recently, like many of our residents who need help during this crisis, are being supported by their family, friends or neighbours. But for anyone who

doesn’t have that support network in place, I want to make sure you know Sefton Council and our partners at Sefton CVS are here to help.

“Have a look on our websitewww.sefton.gov.uk/covid19or call us on 0345 140 0845. The team will ask you a few questions and your information will be shared with Sefton CVS (Community Volunteer Service) who are co-ordinating the support in the community.”

The details of how the funding will be issued to taxi drivers are currently being finalised and further information will be available shortly on the Sefton Council website. However, it is hoped that payments will be made before Christmas.

Sefton ‘drew the short straw’ on emergency T3 coronavirus funding

SEFTON ‘drew the short straw’ in Tier 3 emergency funding for the Liverpool City Region.

Beofre a new national lockdown was announced on Saturday, figures revealing the new round of grants for Tier 3 funding show Halton was to receive £3.558m; Knowsley £5.302m; Liverpool £19.081m; St Helens £3.902m and the Wirral £5.428m. However, Sefton will get £3.544m - the lowest amount.

Cllr Ian Maher, Labour leader of Sefton Council reacted with dismay to the announcement, saying: “I am disappointed that once again funding provided from central government falls woefully short of what we need to support our communities at this time.

“The government’s decision not to include social care as part of the funding formula means that Sefton’s share is the lowest in the City Region.

“It seems to me this Government have no idea or understanding of financial issues caused by 10 years of Coalition and Conservative austerity policies and the continuing fiscal shortfall facing Local Government in general and Sefton Council in

Art competition is launched to help the Plaza Cinema CREATIVE children are being asked to draw a picture of the Plaza Cinema for a competition which is being held to desperately raise funds for the Waterloo venue.

The local cinema has struggled since reopening following lockdown with a drop in customers and repeated criminal damage caused to the building.

An art competition, called Save the Plaza, is inviting pupils from local schools to paint or draw the cinema from any angle and on maximum of A4 paper.

Entry fee is £1 and this will be donated to the Plaza.

The event is sponsored by Julie Lawson Community Events CIC in collaboration with the National Lottery Community Fund and HM Government.

There will be three age groups Primary, Junior and Senior – with winners in each. Their pictures will be framed and entered into the final when the overall winners will be announced next January.

“In the latest round the government have chosen not to recognise the extra pressures created by having a more elderly population and the result is that Sefton’s share of government funding plummets.

“This seems a crass government decision when it's the elderly that need most protection, but it’s a crass decision that potentially will affect every citizen in Sefton.”

Residents warned about ‘zombie’ batteries danger Report by Tom Martin RESIDENTS are being urged to recycle dangerous ‘zombie batteries’ to stop the risk of fires.

Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority and waste company Veolia, say too many batteries are going into bins and getting mixed up in general waste.

Once at the recycling centres, sorting machinery can spark the batteries back into life and they start to burn and cause fires, prompting the term ‘zombie’ batteries.

A new campaign called ‘Take Charge’ is urging locals to only recycle dead batteries using specialist battery recycling services, and to never throw batteries away alongside general rubbish or other recycling.

Merseyside residents can recycle used batteries by removing them from devices and take them to battery recycling collection points at a local recycling centre. Carl Beer, chief executive of MRWA, said: “We’ve seen an increase in the amount of electrical items coming into our recycling centres over the last few years, which

Melling Community Volunteers hand out lunch packs during half term MEMBERS of the Melling Community Volunteers set up due to the coronavirus delivered more than 15,000 hot meals prepared

by The Horse and Jockey to vulnerable, shielding, people during the March to August lockdown.

With most schools being closed on half term, the group handed out lunch packs, prepared by The

Horse and Jockey, to children who required a lunch last week.

The packs were collected from the volunteers who set up all week on the Events Marquee in the grounds of Caunce Hall between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Sefton MP Bill Esterston called in to thank the volunteers for their contribution to the local community.

Jessica raises money for stoma campaign A BRAVE young girl from Seaforth who is suffering from a chronic condition isn’t letting it stop her from raising money for charity.

Jessica Dowle, who is six years old, had to have a stomaprocedure two years ago, which is when an opening is created in the abdomen to provide an alternate way for waste materials to leave the body.

Despite recent complications with her stoma and needing further hospital treatment, Jessica is still raising awareness of colostomy bags for children and she has started a new fundraiser.

She hopes to sponsor moreButtony Bears, which are teddy bears that also have a colostomy so other children with the condition don’t feel alone.

Report by Tom Martin A WOMAN from Maghull was “shocked and appalled” when her mum’s ashes were handed over to her in a paper bag.

Pauline Kershaw was devastated when her mother, Catherine Taylor, 86, passed away recently and a funeral took place with social distancing and a limit on the number of attendants.

But when Pauline went to pick up her mum’s ashes from the funeral director afterwards, the heartbroken daughter told the Champion she was given them in a paper bag.

She said: “I wasn’t expecting them to be in a fancy urn, but it felt like I was picking up a takeaway meal and not mum’s ashes.”

The funeral directors say the ashes were handed to them in this way from Thornton Crematorium and Pauline has since complained to Sefton Council.

She said: “My mum lived in St Nicholas nursing home in Netherton and they allowed us in to be with her when she was put on end of life care the week

Heartbroken daughter says ‘it was like picking up a takeaway meal’ before she died. I was lucky to be able to spend that week with her, and the staff in the nursing home couldn’t do enough for her or us. I was grateful to have that time with her and she wasn't in any pain.

“She knew we were there and she had a very gentle passing.

“Then we had the funeral and given the current circumstances around Covid the service was very nice. So up to then I was handling things quite well - until we collected the ashes.

“We were devastated to see the way she was presented to us and we couldn't believe it. This wasn't a takeaway meal we were picking up, it was our mam. We can't believe that people’s loved ones are treated with such disrespect.

“We weren’t expecting a fancy urn, but something more substantial than a paper bag. We would have appreciated being warned that this was the way she would be returned to us, and maybe given the opportunity to provide a con-

tainer of our own. The distress I felt when I opened that box and saw a paper bag will stay with me for a long time. I’m struggling to accept a paper bag as a suitable or respectful container.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Our staff at Sefton Crematoria and Cemeteries always treat people with the utmost respect and we understand that the death of a loved one is a difficult and emotional time.

“Sefton Council follows standard industry practice and presents ashes in a cardboard casket with an additional internal paper bag. This cardboard casket is biodegradable and is therefore ideal for those who wish to bury their loved ones’ remains.

“Funeral Directors would usually discuss the range of alternative receptacles available with families, so that an informed decision can be made, and can transfer ashes into another urn in accordance with the family’s request.”

Locals urged to make pledge to support Plastic Challenge THE Canal & River Trust is calling on Sefton residents to help stop half a million pieces of plastic reaching the ocean by pledging to join its national Plastics Challenge.

In the last six months, the charity has seen a 68% increase in reports from the public about unsightly litter on the towpath and in its canals and rivers.

Figures show that reports more than doubled during the month of June this year, compared with the same time last year.

PATIENTS will able to see sparkling Christmas trees from their rooms at St Joseph’s Hospice during this coming festive season.

The Sparkle for St Joseph’s project will give local businesses and organisations the opportunity to give the gift of Christmas to hospice patients receiving end of life care by filling its gardens withtrees covered in glittering lights.

The lights will all be switched on on Friday, December 4 and will be left on until Tuesday,January 5.

Animal lover turns to her love of crafting to raise funds for abandoned pets

by Danielle Thompson AN ANIMAL lover has turned to her love of crafting to raise £800 for abandoned and abused pets.

Sandra Nixon, 72, was a street collector for Carla Lane Animals in Need in Melling and Freshfields Animal Rescue in Ince Blundell before the lockdown.

On hearing that the two charities were struggling financially, the retired teacher, who taught art at Greenbank High School and Birkdale High School, thought, ‘I must act and act now!’ and so turned to crafting.

The grandmother of four said: “I had been crafting old fashioned handmade recycled rugs for these charities before so I adapted them to make smaller dog rugs to line their baskets.

“I used my art skills acquired at Edge Hill University, taking up my brushes to paint as I had to shield and used my smartphone to market my creations.

“I was delighted to receive a great response - the very first lady to contact me said she would give £10. It was a little canvas picture of a cute dog but she twigged the idea of commissions of people’s beloved pets.

“With Christmas looming and a minimum donation of £1, the

highest I have received was £100.

“To date I have made £800 but I have combatted feelings of depression, anxiety and sheer loneliness by being as positive as I possibly can be in these unprecedented times.

Estate agents in move to back hospice THE owners of Southport’s newest estate agents are giving a percentage of their fees to Queenscourt Hospice.

The generous move is part of Curlett Jones’ mission to ‘put something back into the town’.

Curlett Jones opened up on Lord Street in August this year, with Queenscourt mascot Queenie Bee invited to be their VIP guest to cut the ribbon. The firm says that Southport’s housing market is ‘booming’ at the moment, helped partly by the recent cut in Stamp Duty.

Beware rogue waste collectors RESIDENTS who use social media sites to hire unregistered waste collectors could become ‘accidental criminals’, warns the Environment Agency.

Waste carriers, like other licensed trades, are required to register and operate in line with a set of rules that protect the environment and their customers.

These rules include disposing of waste in the right place, storing it safely and keeping accurate records of transfer

and disposal. If you fail to do this you could face a £5,000 fine.

Registered waste carriers in the North West have become concerned about the number of ‘man and van’ adverts and self-promotion on Facebook and other social media platforms offering to take away people’s rubbish.

If these traders don’t have a waste carriers’ licence, there is no guarantee rubbish will go to an authorised legal site.

Instead, it could end up

dumped on the side of the road or burned in a field, causing environmental damage. And the person who hired the unregistered trader could face a criminal charge.

John Neville of the Environment Agency said: “We want people to... ask where the rubbish will end up, don’t pay cash and insist on a receipt, then record the details of the vehicle used to take the rubbish away.

“If people suspect criminal activity, they should report it on our hotline 0800 807060.”

Giving blood is allowed in the new Covid restrictions and Liverpool Donor Centre is staying open with appointments remaining as normal.

Peter Baughan, Head of Blood Donation for the North at NHS Blood and Transplant said: “We have seen a fantastic response from blood donors so far in the pandemic and blood stocks have remained good.

“With these updated Covid-19 measures coming into effect in the community, it’s important for anyone in the area who has an upcoming appointment to donate blood to please stick to it if you can, as blood donation remains essential for NHS and patient care and is exempt from travel restrictions.

Fundraising campaign to help local businesses forced to close in Tier 3 Report by Tom Martin A FUNDRAISER has been launched to support independent businesses in Crosby which have been forced to close under Tier 3 restrictions.

The campaign has been set-up by restaurant owners Paul Knighty, Andy Peters, Gary Peters, Tom Peters and Danielle McNulty, who together run So Salsa, Rock Salt and The Tree House, all in Crosby.

They thought of the idea after feeling relieved that restaurants were not included in the Tier 3 closure restrictions, but felt sorry for those that did such as pubs, bars and micro-pubs.

To support affected businesses, they started an online donations page in the hope of raising £9,000.

Andy said: “Me and other owners where talking about how lucky we are that we’re able to keep the restaurants open during the Tier 3 lockdown and how we felt sorry for businesses which have had to close.

“Through conversation we said ‘let’s do a Crowdfund’ with the aim to raise £1,000 per independent business in Crosby which has closed because of the new lockdown rules.

The group say the £9,000 will be shared between Tierpro Gym, Alive Gym, The Crow’s Nest, The Edinburgh, The Corner Post, The Pigeon, Corkscrew, Frankie’s and Stamps. Andy said that to help the fundraising, a discretionary £1 will be added to bills at So Salsa and Rock Salt. The Tree House has been temporarily closed.

Andy added: “It’s going to be tough to raise £9,000 but we are going to give it a good go. When we reopened the restaurants we adding a discretionary £1 to every bill, this will go straight to the Crowdfund account.

“We’re going to keep this going until the businesses are able to reopen. The last thing we want to see is

independents closing around us. Crosby has become such a good area over the past five years and if we don't all chip in together, these businesses may never open again which will have a knock on affect for everybody living in the area.

“Since the crowdfunding started, the gyms have been able to reopen which is great news. Halloween sees almost 50% rise in bad behaviour

(but new figures include Covid-19 breaches) Report by Danielle Thompson FORCE chiefs have revealed an almost 50% increase in reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage during Halloween.

Merseyside Police revealed a mixed bag of results for the Halloween weekend – they say there was an overall 48.8% increase in reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage (314 compared to 211 last year), which can largely be attributed to the fact that the anti-social behaviour figures include Covid-19 related incidents and breaches.

But reports of criminal damage alone decreased by 28.9% (27 incidents compared to 38 last year).

A total of 861 emergency and nonemergency calls were received during the policing operation between 2pm and 11pm on Saturday, October 31, up from 768, (a 12.1% increase) during the same period in 2019.

But there was a reduction in the number of calls received by the force about antisocial behaviour and criminal damage on Friday, October 30. A total of 1,285 calls were received during the police operation between 2pm and 11pm, down from 1,373, (a 6.4% decrease) during the same period in 2019. There was a 7.7% decrease in reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage with 523 such reports being made compared to 567 the previous year.

Officers attended a number of incidents, including reports damage had been caused to vehicles and houses in the Maghull area. On arrival, a group of youths threw stones at the police vehicle, before making off in the direction of the King George playing fields. A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

At around 7.30pm, officers were called to Aintree Retail Park following reports a delivery driver had been assaulted by a group of youths, who then made off with his moped. Officers attended and a short time later recovered the scooter and arrested two 15-year-old boys and a 17-yearold boy on suspicion of robbery. The victim sustained minor injuries.

Chief Inspector Peter Clark said: “We have seen an overall increase in reports of ASB and criminal damage compared to last year, but this rise is due to the fact that reports of Covid-19 related incidents and breaches largely make up the ASB figures, rather than incidents targeting members of the public.

“Parents and guardians, please keep talking to your children about where they ’re going, what they’re doing and who they ’re with when they leave the house.

We know the Halloween period has looked a lot different this year, and understand the disappointment and frustration felt by many about having plans cancelled and not being able to spend time with loved ones, but it’s crucial that we continue to follow the guidance now so that we can reunite soon.”

As you can imagine, Covid-19 will restrict our ability to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal this year, however the team at Crosby & South Sefton Royal British Legion aim to support the appeal as much as possible whilst operating within current guidelines.

M.Williams is quite right in his letter (Champion, October 28) when he says the majority in the country must be left to carry on their lives in as normal a way as possible while the tiny at-risk minority take responsibility for their own protection from Covid.

The public are beginning to see through the barrage of stats put out by SAGE whose predictions to date have been as accurate as government economic forecasts.

Herd immunity idea is a discredited one I must take issue with the writer of the letter titled ‘Why did we just roll over?’ in the Champion, October 28.

The idea that there are ‘excellent anti-virals that could be given at home to keep hospital numbers down’ is just not correct.

If this was the case, people in Sefton would not be dying of Covid-19.

Our hospitals are barely coping with a near maximum demand for beds, staff are exhausted and stressed, and their lives being put at risk by nursing people with Covid19.

With over a million Covid19 deaths around the world, it should be obvious that there are no really effective home anti-virals for this illness here or worldwide.

Regarding the roll out of new wheelie bins - I live in a narrow lane and cannot accommodate bins so what is the council thinking?

It’s ludicrous.

Why can’t they put a ‘dumpster’ at the end of the roads or, better still, three dumpsters - grey, brown, and blue?

Most of us can accommodate the green bin.

Cut free parking hours The two hour free parking period on South Road, Waterloo is far too generous and should be reduced to 30 minutes.

Last week, whilst heading for Waterloo station en route to town, a woman parked her car on South Road, boarded a train, and went all the way into town. This highlighted one of the problems with the two hour free parking period operated there.

If it were reduced to a 30 minute period, this would produce a threefold benefit.

Firstly, a more frequent turnover of parking spaces would encourage

more people to shop in South Road, as there would be an increased chance of parking near to the shops.

Secondly, it would generate more revenue for Sefton Council, as people who wanted to stay for longer than 30 minutes would have to use the pay to park facility behind Home Bargains.

And, lastly, it would deter the abuse of the available free parking intended to generate footfall for South Road shops, where people park for free and then go shopping in town!
