NEW ROAD THROUGH PARK? NO TAR! Locals make their feelings known during the march

Rose with Sir Kenny Dalglish

Tributes are paid to ‘inspirational’ Rose TRIBUTES have been paid to a Hillsborough campaigner from Blundellsands who has sadly passed away. Rose Robinson died on August 8 at the age of 79 after a short battle with cancer. Her 17-year-old son, Steven Robinson, was one of the 97 Hillsborough victims who died in the 1989 disaster. Steven went to Sacred Heart High School in Crosby and became an auto electrician before his death. Rose - described as ‘inspirational’ - became the original press officer for the Hillsborough Family Support Group and later the northern media spokesperson for the HFSG. She played an important role in campaigning against the appointment of N orman Bettison as Chief Constable of Merseyside in 1998.

She fought tirelessly for justice for Steven and the other victims and even appeared on David Frost’s television show to be interviewed alongside fellow campaigner Anne Williams. Her family say she will be terribly missed as she leaves behind husband Bernie, daughters Tracey and Claire and sons Paul and Peter and her seven grandchildren.

Rose’s son, Steven

Report by Tom Martin

AROUND 1,000 people made their voices clearly heard after marching through the streets of south Sefton with a clear message: ‘we don’t want a road build through our park’. Save Rimrose Valley has hailed the mass demonstration on Friday, August 20 as a ‘complete success’ after the large group of protesters walked in solidarity from Rimrose Valley Country Park all the way to the gates of Peel Ports. People of all ages carried signs, banners and chanted during the peaceful protest against plans by Highways England to build a road through the heart of Rimrose Valley. Stuart Bennett of the Save Rimrose Valley campaign told the Champion: “We were blown away by the huge turnout for our latest demonstration. “Yet again, the communities of south Sefton and people from across the Liverpool City Region showed just how much they care about Rimrose Valley and the wider issues linked to this Port Access Road, by coming out in force.

March attracts hundreds of people opposed to port highway scheme

“Families and friends came together to create a wonderful, positive atmosphere and their amazing banners and placards delivered powerful messages. It was a day that will live long in the memory.” Prior to the march, guest speakers attended a rally on Rimrose Valley itself. Local politi-

cians and environmental campaigners from across the country showed their support for what they said has become a nationally important campaign. They then walked to the main entrance to Peel Ports, in Seaforth, in an effort to persuade the company to stop its support for the Highways England road plan. Upon arrival, Sarah Edey, a local primary school teacher and trustee of the charity Rimrose Valley friends, was joined by her children Thomas and Lily, who handed a letter to Port Police Inspector, Stephen Christian. The Inspector is to deliver the letter to Peel Ports’ CEO, Mark Whitworth.

Hundreds of people attended the march, above.
