LAST weekend’s Waterloo Festival has been hailed as a ‘complete success’ by thrilled organisers, as locals enjoyed one of the first big community events held in south Sefton since the pandemic.

Hundreds of people descended on Crosby Coastal Park between Friday, July 30 to Sunday, August 1 to enjoy theme park rides, live music, entertainment and food/drink stalls.

Despite the weather taking a dip after the recent heatwave, it didn’t dampen the atmosphere with many people attending their first local festival in well over a year.

There were also emotional scenes for some of the bands, who were performing in front of a crowd for the first time since the emergence of Covid-19.

CAMPAIGNERS who are trying to stop a road being constructed through Rimrose Valley Country Park have vowed to continue their fight... despite a failed court challenge to the project.

Save Rimrose Valley will hold a further protest on Friday, August 20, which will include guest speakers and a march against plans by Highways England to build a new road through the heart of the south Sefton park.

It comes after the ‘disappointing’ outcome of a High Court case when Transport Action Network (TAN) asked for a judicial review into the government’s £27.4billion Road Investment Strategy (RIS2) claiming it broke environmental laws.

The RIS2 is a series of multi-million pound road projects to be built by 2025. It includes the Rimrose Valley road, known formally as the Port of Liverpool Access scheme.

After two days, a High Court judge ruled in favour of the government and the RIS2.

Stuart Bennett from ‘Save Rimrose Valley ’ had been hoping for a better outcome, but told the Champion that the campaigners are still trying to force Highways England into a Uturn.

He said: “We’re obviously disappointed with the High Court’s ruling as this could have had a significant bearing on Highways England’s Port of Liverpool Access road project here in Sefton. However, we’re also encouraged by the fact that Transport Action Network has already indicated it will appeal this decision. Turn to p3

A COVID-19 testing service for the travel sector, which is based in south Sefton, is now analysing 15,000 samples a day to help enable people to go abroad.

The recently opened £2million clinic in Bootle, run by BioGrad Diagnostics, has helped with the firm’s goal of pioneering Covid-19 testing for travel across the North West.

The firm is currently testing up to 15,000 samples every 24 hours in its Liverpool laboratories and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

BioGrad was founded in 2014 by Dr Natalie Kenny, and in 2020, the company pivoted in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, creating BioGrad Diagnostics and provides ‘responsive and dynamic’ Covid-19 antigen and antibody testing facilities. Through this new arm of the business, BioGrad say it is ‘helping to keep the country moving’ during the coronavirus crisis.

The pandemic saw BioGrad Diagnostics transform itself into one of the nation’s leaders in Covid-19 testing, offering tests for Pre-Travel, Day 2, Day 8 and Test to Release. The growth that the company has experienced in the past year has led to the development of more than120 new jobs in the Merseyside region. It includes the recent opening of its 7,500sq ft Bootle clinic, which contains a new testing clinic, clinical administration, call centre, marketing and HR departments.

First phase of £15m work to Aintree Hospital is revealed THE first phase of £15million work to rejuvenate Aintree University Hospital, creating a new main entrance and upgrading the Tower Block is complete and officially opened.

Steve Warburton, Chief Executive of Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT) was joined by Metro Mayor for Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, to mark the ribbon cut.

Access to the entrance has been improved and the renovation has given the hospital a more modern, efficient, and contemporary feel. Patients and staff will also benefit from cleaner, simpler, and safer drop off facilities.

This work is part of the Trust’s commitment to improving patient experience and investing in the quality of healthcare facilities available at the Hospital.

Sculptor, Sam Shendi was commissioned to create an installation for the Trust. The colourful attraction can be seen from the entrance of the hospital and represents a metamorphic journey of change.

The boost to NHS services in Liverpool comes as the 125-foot tall Tower Block, which holds 480 beds, reached its 50th anniversary in 2021.

The work is part of a wider £22.5 million investment programme to refurbish Aintree’s Tower Block and provide improvements to the Emergency Department.

Mr Warburton, said: “This is the biggest ever single investment in Aintree’s Tower Block and will extend its lifespan by up to 30 years.

“The Tower Block development is great news for our patients and staff.

It is also a vote of confidence in the hospital and the vital role it plays for the city region’s NHS services.

Tributes paid to Lydiate war hero A WAR hero from Lydiate who survived what Sir Winston Churchill described as ‘the worst journey in the world’ has passed away.

Stanley Hilton, who was a well known and much-loved member of his local community, died last week at the age of 96.

His family have described him as ’independent and very highly thought of by those who knew him’.

During the Second World War, Stanley was on board the HMS Campania which had the incredibly difficult task of sailing through the Arctic Circle in order to get supplies to the Soviet Union.

As well as facing the German Navy, they also had to battle extreme temperatures in what Prime Minister Churchill, at the time, described as ‘the worst journey in the world’.

In total, 84 merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships were lost making the journey, but HMS Campania survived the war. In 2016, Stanley was presented with the Ushakov medal, which was given to Arctic convoy veterans by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation HE Dr Alexander Yakovenko, on behalf of Vladimir Putin.

The Ushakov medal is a Soviet military award created in 1944 by the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In his speech to Stanley and the other war heroes, Mr Yakovenko said: “What you did 70 years ago was extraordinary, even among

“Your heroism will always be remembered in Russia and Britain.

Your deeds will continue to serve as the supreme expression of bravery and a high point in human spirit.”

Born off Scotland Road, Liverpool, in 1924, Stanley was the youngest of nine siblings.

After the war, he worked as a crane driver at the Liverpool docks.

He married Mary in 1948 and together they had a son called Phillip. Mary passed away in 1987.

Stanley also leaves behind two grandchildren, Nathan and Jessica, who he loved very much.

His funeral will take place on Thursday, August 12 at St Thomas’ Church in Lydiate at 1.15pm.

One Good Tern Deserves Another Common Terns enjoy most successful breeding year One of our favourite summer visitors to Martin Mere is the common tern, which, due to its tail streamers and graceful flight, is also known as the sea swallow. This bird breeds across most of Europe and Asia, and in parts of North America, and spends winters in the tropics and the southern hemisphere. It is one of the longest travelled birds in the world and, on average, can rack up 35,000km each year on its migration.

Around 12,000 pairs of common terns nest in Britain, mainly around our coasts, but some nest inland at sites like Martin Mere. The birds nesting on our reserve arrive back towards the end of April, having spent the winter off the western and southern coasts of Africa.

To avoid mammalian predators, terns like to nest on shingle banks or islands. At Martin Mere, this habitat is lacking and so we have installed tern rafts on the mere, to encourage the birds to breed.

Last year, we installed a 50m2 tern raft, adding to two smaller rafts that were already in place.

In May, the terns started laying eggs, with up to three eggs in a nest. Incubation usually lasts around 22 days and so we saw our first chicks in June. Most chicks are able to fly and leave the nest after about a month after hatching but the parents will still feed the young for a while after.

The new tern raft has been a great success and this year a total of eight pairs of common terns have nested, with five of the pairs using the new raft. This is a considerable increase from the site’s record of three pairs, which nested last year.

The adults are currently flying around the mere and surrounding waterbodies catching fish and returning to feed the young, which are now also mobile. The birds have even been seen fishing on the canal in Rufford.

It won’t be long before they all embark on their migration south but there should still be a few weeks left in which you can see them on the mere or even screaming above the car park when you arrive for your visit.

Crosby mum’s fundraising is ‘marvellous’ says the Queen!

A MUM was told by the Queen that her tireless charity work is ‘simply marvellous!’

Julie Lawson, from Crosby, was invited to Manchester Cathedral to meet the Queen after she was awarded the British Empire Medal for voluntary and charitable services.

During their conversation, Julie took the opportunity to share her experiences with Alzheimer’s and how it has impacted on her family.

Council backs World Breastfeeding Week SEFTON Council is backing World Breastfeeding Week, which started on Sunday, August 1.

World Breastfeeding Week aims to raise awareness of the health and wellbeing outcomes of breastfeeding around the world and to support mothers to breastfeed.

This year, the concept of building back better after the COVID19 pandemic is being seen as an opportunity to create a ‘warm chain’ of support for breastfeeding.

This ‘warm chain’ includes health systems, workplaces, and communities at all levels of society and will help build an environment that enables and support for breastfeeding.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said: “Covering pregnancy, labour and delivery, early contact, the postnatal period and then the first 24 months of the child’s life, the warm chain covers places the mother and baby at the its core through a 1,000-day timeline.

“Academicians, health workers, family members, GPs, midwives, nurses, nutritionists, obstetricians and gynaecologists and paediatricians and politicians at local and national levels are all key links in that chain.

“Through that joined-up approach we can support the health and welfare benefits that breastfeeding provides for

babies, mothers, families and communities right around the world, as well as the nutrition, poverty-reduction and food security advantages it brings.”

A NEW activities programme will launch in south Sefton to offer locals the choice of football coaching or a guided route of Rimrose Valley Country Park, which participants can walk, run or cycle.

Rimrose Valley Friends has teamed up with Wirralbased HYPE Merseyside to launch their first ‘Walk, Run, Cycle, Plan’ event after securing a grant from the Canal and River Trust and Sport England’s Tackling Inequalities fund.

The six-week programme is free of charge, open to everyone and will run every Sunday throughout the school holidays.

The first event was held on Sunday, August 1 and it will run until September 5.

It is based at Liverpool County FA’s Sefton site in Thornton and the events offer the choice of football coaching or a guided route around the country park which participants can walk, run or cycle. The sessions start at 10am and finish at midday and include free drinks.

Doggie duos find new homes STAFF at an animal rescue based in Ince Blundell are delighted after two adorable duos of dogs were able to find homes – while being able to stay together!

The Champion revealed in May that Labrador cross Alice, eight and her doggy best friend Daisy, a Germain Pointer Cross, 10, who had been paired for eight years, were in need of a home together after they were handed in to the team at Freshfields Animal Rescue after their owner suffered a stroke and was no longer able to care for them.

MP hits out at lack of funds for areas hit by flooding Report by Tom Martin SEFTON Central MP Bill Esterson has criticised the government for failing to provide the necessary funding for flood prevention for Maghull.

The government and Environment Agency said £42.8m was to be invested in schemes in Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire in 2020/21 as part of £860m national investment.

But Maghull, which was saved from flooding only by a fortuitous breach of the embankment at Lunt Meadows during Storm Christoph in January, has been left off the list.

Mr Esterson said: “When I met with the floods minister recently I told her that Maghull needs this investment, so it is disappointing to see that £860m will be spent on flood defences this year and next, but nothing for Maghull.

“The Environment Agency has identified the work that needs doing to build the flood defences that Maghull deserves. The work that is needed to Dovers Brook would cost £1.7m. So where is the money for Maghull?

“After cancelling my meeting three times, the government’s Floods Minister Rebecca Pow MP finally met with me recently to hear why flood defences are so urgently needed. I requested that the funding be made available, but she refused to commit to what is needed to help protect Maghull residents from flooding.

dogs were also re-homed as a pair!

“Jack and Missy are a second happy pair who found a home together. That’s two in the past few months! They don’t have to be split up now, and we’re all thrilled to bits.”

Pharmacy staff raise £16k in Sue’s memory Report by Tom Martin STAFF and friends at a Crosby pharmacy have raised more than £16,000 in memory of a muchloved former colleague.

The group held a fundraiser at Alexander’s Pharmacy, on Stuart Road, and took part in a 5k run/walk in Sefton Park.

The aim was to raise as much money as possible for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which provides support to all those affected by the condition.

In July last year, Sue Alexander passed away after she had been diagnosed with MND. Sue was the wife of pharmacy owner, John Alexander, and she also worked at the pharmacy.

In a Facebook post after the Sefton Park challenge, the pharmacy staff said: “We ran, jogged, walked, limped, cycled and some even got lost! All for Sue.

“We can’t get over how much everyone has got stuck in with enthusiasm for this cause. It shows how much love there is here for Sue’s memory.

“We’ll always be collecting through the tins on the counter so Sue will always be remembered in this small way, and who knows what other ideas we’ll come up with in the future!”

Postcards to Parkhaven residents could help to tackle loneliness SEFTON residents are being encouraged to do their bit to help reduce loneliness amongst older people this summer simply by sending a postcard.

Locals are being asked to send postcards to those living at Parkhaven Trust.

Kim Crowe Chief Executive, said: “This is a wonderful initiative encouraging community spirit through the simple

and nostalgic act of writing and sending a postcard.

“Research shows that there are many health benefits from having conversations about past holidays and trips, bringing back happy memories and encouraging residents to talk to others, especially for people living with dementia. This campaign aims to promote these conversations

Feedback wanted for climate change plan RESIDENTS across Sefton are being asked to help shape the Liverpool City Region Net Zero Action Plan.

The proposals are being developed across Merseyside and the views of residents, businesses and young people in particular, are being sought to shape this plan.

Online surveys and in-person sessions will show the changes that society will have to make by 2040, in homes and neighbourhoods, in workplaces, and how people get around. The survey will collect your views on how you feel about potential changes.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, cabinet member for compliance, regulatory and corporate services said: “The Climate Emergency that Sefton Council declared in 2019 is one of the biggest challenges we will face in the coming years.

“Sefton is a coastal borough, it is particularly vulnerable to climate change, but it is also filled with opportunities to take action to protect our planet and improve the health and wellbeing of our com-

munities. Climate change will have an effect on all aspects of our lives, and it is vital that everyone takes the opportunity to have their say.

“I would urge everyone in Sefton to take part in this consultation. I hope young people, especially, feel empowered to shape the decisions that will affect their lives for many more years to come.”

The Liverpool City Region is planning two major surveys and a series of workshops and focus groups. One of the surveys is specifically designed for young people, under 25 years of age, who as the next generation will also be impacted by the changes that will need to be made.

The results will inform what the city region says at the COP26 summit held in Glasgow in November 2021 as well as helping to shape plans in Sefton to tackle the climate emergency.

Tragedy shows emergency services need unhindered access to Crosby beach That a visitor to Crosby should lose his life on our beach has brought home to all of us the full extent of the dangers which can await the unwary.

There are many safety issues we can, and should look at, but the need for our emergency services to have full and unhindered access to the beach has never been more evident.

But if the council go ahead with their potty plan to abandon part of the promenade to nature, in order to save the cost of clearing

away the sand, that unhindered access will be denied, and could result in the loss of even more lives.

So, Sefton Council, clear the sand and save lives.

This should be your priority, not in putting all our recourses into plotting a new and pointless path across the Marine park which nobody needs and nobody wants.

Receptionists at our GP practice are friendly, caring and efficient I read with interest the latest letter about GPs receptionists and indeed I have been following this conversation over the last few weeks in your newspaper.

I have now decided to put pen to paper to offer an alternative viewpoint.

I can’t fault the service myself and my family receive from our receptionist team at Westway Medical Centre,

where the receptionists are friendly, caring and efficient.

They will always listen to what you have to say and try to help you with an appointment if one is available or in these times, a telephone consultation with one of the GPs. Receptionists are human beings and hurt like the rest of us. This constant criticism of them over the last few

weeks must be totally demoralising, when they are trying to do their jobs and help as many patients as possible.

I can only praise my GP's surgery and this includes the GPs who work there too. We have always had a very good service from them over the years.

New path will disturb peace and quiet AS a utility cyclist of 40 years I agree with Westward View’s opposition to the proposed new Coastal Cycle path.

The pavement on the sea side of that road cannot cope with the proposed multi uses proposed by the council.

This is an impossible mix through a narrow residential street.

This is not just a health and safety nightmare awaiting a serious accident but will disturb the peace and quiet of this coastal urban fringe.

Lack of maintenance on A5036 is a disgrace and needs changing I would like to let you know that I have contacted Highways England about the managed decline of the A5036 covering Seaforth, Litherland, Netherton and Old Roan.

We are sick of the state of the road never having the vegetation controlled and the grass verges by the Netherton pub so high we can’t see the other side.

We are a part of a committee formed four years ago to try and make sure this road was being cleaned up.

I received a phone call from Area 10 around four weeks ago advising there are only two cyclic cuts per year and I replied that this is not a motorway but a residential roads and we were told a couple of years ago we would have four cuts per year… at this point the middle of July we haven’t had one yet.

Seaforth roundabout is also a disgrace.

We have to take matters into the community’s hands because Sefton councillors don’t do anything to help us at all here, Sefton council also haven’t cleaned up the streets which belong to them because the girl in the office said they have got no staff or equipment so the rest of the borough is so tired looking.

All the Labour Party do is complain about the cuts the Tories have made.

Our council tax hasn’t been cut but that makes no difference.

It’s like we’re flogging a dead horse but the community end up having to do stuff what the council and Highways refuse to do.

If left neglected the park pond will be vandalised The lake in Coronation Park was such a delightful place in the past.

We used to take our children and grandparents to sail model boats and also to watch the experts sail their wonderful miniature vessels. It is a local venue so no need to use the car and save petrol and emissions. If left neglected it will encourage vandals to destroy it and the council to eradicate it and save money.

THE stretch of promenade from Mariners Road carpark to Crosby Marine Lake is impassable because Sefton Council created dunes on the seaward side which then blow onto the promenade.

This is far from a “massive natural process”, as the Council claim. Residents remember when Sefton Council sited Christmas trees on this area of the beach reshaping this part of the coastline.

All would agree with Cllr Moncur’s point that this is a “beautiful and scientifically important natural asset.”

It is precisely for that reason that we should not give up on maintaining our promenade and existing coastal pathways which people access to admire the famous Iron Men, which we as residents have invested valuable tax payers’ money.

Sefton Council state that the problem of windblown sand onto existing pathways has become “beyond our control.”

This begs the question if Sefton Council cannot maintain the present pathways how is yet another cycle path going to be maintained?

Many residents believe is it planned to just let the promenade disappear. There does however seem to be an attempt to clear the sand between Mariners Road car park and Hall Road. There appears to be a selective maintainance strategy.

Westward View have formed a Residents’ Group in opposition to the proposed new Coastal Cycle path. They believe that the pavement on the sea side of that road cannot cope with the proposed multi uses proposed by the Council: leisure cycling, utility cycling, E bikes and scooters, dog walkers, parents walking children to school, and walkers, some with prams and wheelchairs.

Friends group transforms patch of land in Seaforth A COMMUNITY group from Seaforth have carried out work on an “uninspiring patch of land” in an effort to make it a focal point for the area.

Seaforth Village Friends Group, which was formed last year, were awarded £1,135 by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Community Environment Fund to carry out the project on land next to Sandy Road.

They used the money to buy planters which will now be ‘adopted’ by local residents who will look after them.

Group member Marie said: “The poor weather didn’t deter the volunteers spending a full day, weeding, planting and transforming a very uninspiring patch of land into a focal point for the area.

“We would love in the future to gain further funding to include more planters to the edge of the verge and again encourage the local community to get involved by watering them through our ‘adopt a planter ’ initiative, which has been extremely successful on the eight planters installed on Seaforth Road.

“A big mention should also go to a local charity

Drugs, cash and knives found in house search DRUGS, illegal knives and around £9,000 in cash has been seized by police after they searched a home in Litherland.

A man and woman were arrested on Wednesday, July 28 when officers stopped a vehicle and the driver had a large amount of crack cocaine and heroin.

They then searched a house on Ford Lane and found the cash, as well as a cannabis and knives.

Paul Campbell, 42, of Nunsford Close, was charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, possession with intent to supply heroin, crack cocaine and cannabis, possession of criminal property.

The woman has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Masterclass for aspiring singers SEFTON based Singing group, Opera Viva have arranged a masterclass for aspiring singers from 11am to 5 pm on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the L20 Building at Hugh Baird College, Bootle L20 7EW. Amanda Roocroft, who has sung leading roles in the top opera houses in Europe and America, and who is a renowned recording artist and teacher will be conducting the Masterclass.

Applicants will prepare a short piece of vocal music from the operatic or classical repertoire and will perform it in front of a small, informal audience.

Amanda will then work with each singer to improve their performance, with helpful tips on

singing technique. The masterclass should be a great experience and an opportunity for both new and experienced singers to learn from an eminent performer and teacher.

The fee for singers, which includes admission to the event and the session with Amanda, is £20.

Spectators will be admitted at any time for £10 which covers the whole day.

There will also be a number of free places for young singers (aged 16-19) who live in, or are being educated, in Sefton.

Army of volunteers works hard to keep fans and racers safe

THE best way to avoid a Vauxhall Vectra super touring car smashing into you, as it turns out, is to stand right next to the tyre wall rather than a few feet behind it.

That way, you’ve got something to crouch behind should the worst happen.

This is one of the many nuggets of useful information I’ve picked up from marshals at motorsport events over the years, in this case from one who didn’t agree with the spot I’d chosen for snapping the rather noisy entrants into a race at Oulton Park in Cheshire.

I’ve donned the media tabard and been trackside, beyond the normal safety fences, at circuits all over the UK – and at Germany’s Nürburgring and Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya, for that matter – and the outcome is always the same if I inadvertently stray into potential danger in the line of work. Stern but wellintentioned advice from experts who know the circuit and the cars inside-out.

So I was saddened to learn last weekend that a volunteer marshal had been killed during the course of a race at Brands Hatch after one of the competitors lost cost control. By sheer coincidence, the day it happened I was donning the hi-vis tabard at another circuit – Silverstone, home of the Grand Prix – and the organisers of the event I was covering decided to dedicate the final day’s racing to all marshals, who they

called an ‘orange army’ working hard to keep fans and racers safe.

You might not have given the marshals much thought if you’ve ever flicked on the TV to watch some F1 on an idle Sunday afternoon or rocked up at Oulton Park to watch Mini Coopers dicing it out with Lotus Cortinas at a historic racing event, but without them all of that nailbiting on-track action and the ducking and diving as a dozen cars squeeze towards the racing line on the opening right-hander, simply wouldn’t happen.

Chances are you’ll have seen those signs at circuits warning you that motorsport is dangerous, but these are the guys who do everything in their power to minimise the risk.

More often than not, they’re committed car nuts, just like you and me, and they’re giving up their weekends voluntarily so that everyone else can enjoy their dose of wheel-to-wheel excitement safely.

Marshals are the unsung heroes who keep your favourite motorsport – whether it’s F1, touring cars, GT endurance cars or classic machine – quite literally on track.

To lose one of them is a dark day for petrolheads.
