ST Joseph’s Hospice has unveiled the first six members of the public to sign up for its Strictly St Joseph’s fundraising event in September.

All six participants will hit the training room over the next few months before they perform live at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool on September 25 in the hope of raising lots of money for the Thornton-based charity.

Vaccinated young people urge others to get their injection Report by Tom Martin VACCINATED young people from across Merseyside are adding their voices to the ‘Spread the Facts’ campaign to show how others can play their part in stopping the spread of Covid-19.

A local, independent survey conducted as part of the campaign found that nearly three-quarters (72%) of surveyed younger people agree the vaccination is necessary for a return to ‘normal’ life.

The ‘Spread the Facts’ initiative, which originally launched earlier this year, features young frontline health workers sharing their own personal stories and telling young people how they can play their part in stopping the spread of the virus.

As part of the latest phase of the campaign, they are being joined by young people across the region who have already stepped up to take the vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones.

One supporter is 24-year-old care worker Ellie Longman from Liverpool. After losing a family member to Covid-19 and working closely throughout the pandemic with those most affected, she is eager to share her story about how young people like her can make a difference.

She said: “I have seen, both in my job as a care assistant and through my own experience with Covid-19, exactly how important vaccinations are in helping stop the spread and serious illness due to the virus. I was able to access the vaccination in February due to my job, which involves working with people more susceptible to the harsher effects of coronavirus, and was happy to go forward for it in order to play my part in protecting the most vulnerable in my community.”

Matt Ashton, director of public health for Liverpool and lead director for communications and marketing in Cheshire & Merseyside, added: “Our latest programme of activity for ‘Spread the Facts’ will continue to speak directly to young people and address any misinformation or misconceptions out there.

“The young NHS workers in our campaign are witnessing first-hand the big difference that the vaccine is making in the fight against Covid-19 and are extremely passionate about sharing their stories, so others can understand the real facts and reasons behind why it is so important for all of us to get vaccinated.

“We should all be incredibly proud of our younger people for stepping up to ensure we can continue on our road out of lockdown and back to normality.”

‘One of worst roads in Merseyside’ is given much-needed revamp A RESIDENTIAL street in Maghull described by some as “one of the worst roads in Merseyside” has benefited from some much-needed repair work.

Park Lane has finally been restored after work was highlighted to resurface the road, unblock gullies, cut back ‘dangerous overgrown hedges’ and tackle ever-increasing vegetation in a sewage pumping station.

As well as this, there are plans to replace a ‘poor standard’ bus shelter and a dilapidated wooden fence.

Cllr Dr Frank Sharp, said: “The area has been subject to an unimaginable amount of construction work over the last three years which has caused depressing and dangerous consequences for How the road looked local residents.

After returning home, Amelia developed another UTI but the family were reluctant to send her back to hospital due to the risks posed by Covid-19.

Despite contacting various health officials and bodies, the family were told no home treatment could be offered and Amelia sadly passed away on August 19, 2020.

Daughter Amelia now believes that various agencies ‘let her mum down’ in their duty of care and she has joined 24,000 other people from the North West in backing Alzheimer’s Society’s campaign calling on the government to Cure the Care System.

The charity says that while dementia is not curable yet, the social care system is, and it wants the government to commit to a plan that will deliver high-quality, accessible social care that is free at the point of use, like the NHS. Amelia, who is a former lecturer from Hugh Baird College, said: “There’s an inequality in the present system and people with dementia are being put at risk and, as a result, my mum was given a death sentence, due to a post code lottery.

“I think they look at the age of the person and make their decision based on that, deciding their

resources are better used elsewhere.

“They didn’t look at my mum, as a human being or look at her individual case, or the present climate of Covid, they did not make allowance or changes due to this factor, she was just a statistic.”

Amelia was formally diagnosed with dementia in 2014. For the last seven years, she was cared for by her daughter at home around the clock. After her diagnosis, Amelia claims her family were not provided with any kind of support in terms of information, guidance or support about the condition.

Difficult In March last year Amelia’s mum was admitted to hospital with a severe UTI and when she was there it was discovered she had also developed pneumonia. This coincided with the first outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Her family found her time in hospital extremely difficult as each time they visited their mum they were informed she had been moved with no explanation.

Amelia explains: “The incompetence, miscommunication and misinformation was unbelievable during this time. If she hadn’t had me and my siblings to fight for her care and her needs to be met,

she would have just been left there to cope on her own.”

Amelia’s family fought daily to get her home and their mum returned home in March 2020, one week after she was admitted.

Amelia did very well for a number of months at home, but in June the severe UTI returned. Her children were terrified to put her back in hospital, as there were still Covid cases there.

In addition, Amelia would not be allowed to see anyone from her family and her daughter would not be allowed to stay with her. Amelia’s daughter fought to get intravenous treatment at her home as this would be the only solution to help get her mum better.

“I was refused,” said Amelia. “I was worn down with conversations with GPs and dementia consultants who told our family that in north Sefton only patients with cellulitis can receive this type of treatment at home, even though several convervsations with district nurses and mum’s carers suggested this was not always the case.”

Sadly, Amelia passed away, peacefully at home with her children around her.

There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, including 33,357 in Merseyside, Cheshire and the Isle of Man.

First council homes to be built in Sefton in almost three decades

THE first council homes to be built in Sefton in almost three decades will be sited on the edge of Netherton.

Sefton Council-owned company Sandway Homes’ plans, which will include council apartments as part of its Buckley Hill Lane development, have been approved by the authority ’s Planning Committee.

The development will also contribute to the affordable housing provision on the wider open market housing site.

Construction of the nine council flats will be first to take place in Sefton since the 1990s.

Located in Sefton Grange, the Buckley Hill Lane site on the edge of Netherton will see the construction of 69 new properties.

They will be two, three and fourbed homes and one and two-bed apartments, the majority of which will be for sale.

The scheme will see the redevelopment of land previously occupied by tower blocks, known as the Z Blocks.

Sandway Homes Ltd’s managing director Louise Davies, welcomed the decision by the Planning Committee to give the go-ahead for the Buckley Hill Lane site.

She said: “This is an exciting period for Sandway Homes Ltd and the construction of these nine, new council

apartments at Buckley Hill Lane, the first in Sefton for almost 30 years, makes it a historic one too.

“Our aim is to develop high-quality, mixed-tenure homes, to meet Sefton’s housing requirements. I am pleased to have joined the company at a time when our early developments are taking shape and the next phase of sites are coming on stream.”

In June, Sefton Council’s Cabinet also agreed the disposal of three new sites for development by Sandway Homes. The former Bootle High School site in Netherton, and land at Bentham’s Way and Foul Lane in Southport, will form the second phase of Sandway’s development programme.

She added: “An important part of Sandway ’s business model is to target challenging brownfield sites, in locations where new homes are in high demand to complement other schemes being delivered across the Borough.”

Over the next five years, Sandway Homes’ Business Plan will ensure that Sefton Council receives income from land disposal receipts, with all sites being acquired at full market value.

In addition, the Council will receive sales income as well as planning gain through Section 106 and increased Council Tax revenue. And, it will introduce new, high-quality housing in areas of the Borough where new build-homes may have not been provided before.

Louise Davies added: “Sandway will generate a financial return and added value to the Council through a number of routes. As with any development programme, investment to date has included the pre-construction associated works and obtaining planning consent and financial approval for the Council to raise borrowing in order to invest in this first phase of development.”

Construction of Sandway Homes Ltd.’s first two developments of 78, high-quality two, three & four-bed homes at Sandy Brook, Ainsdale and Barton’s Close, Crossens is already underway. Both schemes include affordable housing as part of the mix, with 25 of the 78 properties allocated for a combination of affordable rent and shared ownership.

With support from Homes England and the Liverpool City Region Brownfield Land Fund, main contractors Barnfield Construction Limited are on site and the groundworks phase for both sites are almost complete. MP wants tougher punishments for attacks on workers

MP Bill Esterson has backed plans to bring in tougher laws for those who assault shop workers.

The proposed amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill would introduce protections for retail staff equal to that of other front-line workers.

It would create a specific offence of assaulting a shop worker with a sentence of up to 12 months, and a new offence for assaults committed as a direct result of workers enforcing statutory age restrictions.

They would also give greater protection to retail workers as they go about their job, particularly as they enforce statutory age restrictions like on the sale of acid or knives.

MP Esterson said: “All too often our shop workers, who we rely on every day, are undervalued and underpaid. Throughout the pandemic I have been struck by the bravery of committed retail staff, continuing to provide what we now see as a vital public service, often at great risk to themselves and their families.

“From the very first days of this pandemic, when we didn’t even fully understand the risks, and virtually no testing was available, they kept coming in to

work every day, to serve our communities.

“Unfortunately instead of thanks for working so hard to serve their communities, shop workers can face unacceptable levels of abuse.

“In a recent Usdaw survey, it was found that 90 per cent of shopworkers had suffered abuse with two-thirds threatened and nearly one in ten assaulted. That’s not acceptable.

“That’s why I am backing Labour’s amendment to this Bill which calls for greater protection of shopworkers in law, and strengthens punishments for those who attack shop workers, bringing them in to line with other frontline workers.”

Former pub ‘unrecognisable’ after housing transformation A FORMER pub in Crosby looks unrecognisable after it was transformed into apartments.

The Crosby Hotel, on Liverpool Road, was snapped up by developers after it was placed on the market two years ago.

There are nine apartments, with one bedroom apartments priced from £125,000, while those with two bedrooms start at £160,000.

The Crosby Hotel was a popular pub for many years for local drinkers. When it closed down, a campaign was started to keep the historic ‘cannon’ outside the building.

There were fears developers would remove the structure and a campaign was launched to save what they say is a ‘significant part of the heritage of Crosby Village.’

It was positioned at the front of the building, on Liverpool Road, having been placed there at some point around 1860 to protect the wall of St Luke's church from damage.

The developers say they have preserved the cannon as part of the new development.

again. Sadly, along with a lot of other charities, our regular volunteers have not all come back, and we are struggling to cope.

“We need people to read –just a clear voice needed! - to record on the computer, basic IT skills needed, training will be given; to check and copy the memory sticks; and to deal with the admin work. We are short of people in all of these groups, so if anyone thinks they could offer help, please get in touch.

One small thing to go plastic-free SEFTON Council are marking Plastic Free July by encouraging locals to do all they can to help reduce plastic pollution.

The month-long campaign is recognised around the world and urges people to refuse single-use plastics to help the environment.

In Sefton, the council is calling on residents and businesses to do #OneSmallThing to reduce their use of single use plastics.

This could be: taking your own reusable bags when shopping; carrying a reusable water bottle and hot beverage

cup; using reusable containers for lunches and picnics when at work or on day trips; avoiding plastic disposable straws, cutlery, cups or plates etc; making sure that if you do use some plastic items, taking them home and recycling them.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, cabinet member for regulatory, compliance and corporate services said: “Plastic is a material designed to last for hundreds of years but we now make

things that are used just once and thrown away. A plastic bag is used, on average, for 12 minutes, but it’s likely to be around when our great-greatgreat grandchildren are born! Sefton Council have made great strides in phasing out single use plastics in our borough, but we all have to work together to reduce them even further.

“Plastic Free July should get people thinking about how a small change can result in a big reduction in single use plastics across the borough and I hope people will join me in changing One Small Thing about the way we live to make Sefton cleaner and greener.”

Cinema to host Floristry was ‘overlooked’ in pandemic free film project AWARD-WINNING wedding florist Joanne Quinn cleverly adapted her business to stay afloat when the Covid-19 pandemic hit but, she claims, her industry was ‘overlooked’ by the government.

Long-standing local business Foam Wedding Flowers & Gifts, based in Maghull, took a hit in 2020 like so many other businesses but the major blow to the wedding industry meant many couples were unable to have the wedding they’d dreamed of, postponing and cancelling their plans, including their flowers!

In partnership with Ian Chapman, the Waterloo venue is running the project for anyone aged 13-19 years old.

Christine Physick, Director of Creative Development with the Plaza said: “This is a very exciting and ambitious project. Through the generous support of Children in Need and Southport Rotary Club we are able to bring together a large group of creative and media professionals who are very keen to share some of the tricks of the trade with the young people as well as inspire them to consider a career in film and media.

“I would also like to add a special thank you to Angela and Leah at the Ferndale for hosting this project.

“We are looking for young people who are interested in learning how to create their own film from start to finish.

“Experience is not essential as training will be given. Just come with plenty of ideas. If you are interested in any of the following acting, theatrical make-up and prosthetics, filming/camera work, set design, editing, making music and creating special effects – we would love to hear from you.”

It will be themed on gender stereotypes prevalent in society and the media, and the impact this can have

the industry she has put her heart and soul into, turned to another form of decoration to keep her busy.

With many people focused on making home improvements and revitalising the place they were spending so much time in, Joanne expanded her products to provide the finishing touches, with vases, pampas grass and artificial house plants taking over her shop.

Joanne explained: “If you’ve seen my rants on social media, you’ll know how frustrated and upset I’ve been for all our wedding customers this year. It’s just been so unfair on them and the whole industry has been overlooked.

Riley, eight, goes the extra mile with 10-mile charity challenge

Community group tackles weeds and litter at Old Roan Report by Henry James MOLYNEUX Ward Labour Team, Danny Burns, Cllr Marion Atkinson and Cllr Paula Murphy joined forces with community volunteers and Network Rail this week to clear the weeds and litter from the Old Roan Pub in Aintree.

The group came mob handed with brushes, litter picks and weed removers to sort out the pub that once was the flagship for the area.

Danny Burns chair of Molyneux Ward said: “We regularly get questions and comments about the poor state of the pub. Despite Paula and Marion working with the council and a fine being issued to the owners, the pub unfortunately has been left to rot. We decided to do

something about it and have had great support from the community and our colleagues in the railway.”

Councillor Marion Atkinson added: “It really frustrates me to see the pub fall into disrepair the way it has.

It’s also very annoying when a flagship venue like this is treated the way it is by the owners. They don’t care about our area, but we do.”

Councillor Paula Murphy, who compared the clean up to a 30 mile run, said: “It was hard work but so worth it in the end. We are truly grateful to the volunteers who do so much, Sefton Council neighbourhoods and cleansing teams, Network Rail and party members for taking time out of work to help improve the look of our area. They really made such a difference.”

AN eight-yearold from Seaforth has raised money for charity after taking on a ten-mile cycle challenge.

Riley Whewell aimed to raise £100 but managed to get £350 in donations, which will now be given to Zoe’s Place.

His proud mum, Chelsea, told the Champion he was “overwhelmed with the amount of support he’s received so far

and we are all proud of him!”

She added: “He just came home from school one day and said he’d like to raise money for charity so we both sat down and looked through the internet and came across Zoe’s Place so he decided that’s who he’d like to raise money for to help the children there.”

Pandemic doesn’t end on July 19, stresses council chief

Government to abandon measures put in place to protect people from Covid Report by Danielle Thompson WITH significant numbers of Sefton residents expressing concerns about the Government’s plans to remove all Covid restrictions from Monday, July 19, council chiefs are stressing that people have the right to take whatever action makes them feel safe.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said: “It is clear from people’s reaction to the government’s announcement it plans to abandon measures to protect people from Covid from July 19 that this is causing real fears for a lot of people.

“While some people will want to get rid of masks straight away, others will want to continue wearing them and have every right to do so. Wearing masks have proven to protect the wearer and those people who they come into contact with from catching Covid.

Exasperated It’s time well-rewarded GPs did the job they are paid to do patients resort to self-diagnosis S.Heywood (Letters June 23) asks the public to ‘think hard before being critical of doctors’. The majority, however, will be in agreement with Julia of Litherland (also June 23).

Something is seriously wrong with this whole situation of doctors not seeing patients face to face and it has nothing to do with Covid. Speak to anyone and the problems they are encountering are phenomenal.

All saying the same thing.

Trying to get connected is the first problem!

Unless you have nothing at all to do and can hold on long enough for your battery not to run out before finally, finally, getting connected to a receptionist who doesn’t even pretend to understand/show sympathy let alone any empathy and who then tells you that all slots are booked and you should have phoned earlier!

Then, it’s ‘no, you can’t speak to a GP today.

No, you can’t send photos through as you haven’t got an appointment with a GP... ahhhhh, give me strength!

People are exasperated and resorting to self diagnosis with the help of the internet! Scary stuff as symptoms, apparently, can be anything from minor stress to late stages of cancer! No wonder mental health problems are rising.

I fail to understand why GPs can’t actually ‘see’ patients now? Practice nurses do it?

Is this what we are reduced to for ever more? Frustration, upon frustration and being fobbed off constantly by non medical staff? I am off now to try for the 13th (working) day to get a phone appointment with my GP. Kathryn Kelly, Birkdale

I have read with interest the letters which have appeared in the Champion regarding GP services.

I agree entirely with the opinion that GPs reacted very badly during lockdown and throughout the pandemic to date.

The contrast I see is between ICU Doctors working very closely with Covid patients in often inadequate PPE, in some

cases giving their life to save a patient.

Meanwhile the GPs take to working from home and doing everything to keep away from patients even though they have ensured any such patient does not have Covid.

If we were able to consign this behaviour to the past and get back to normal then I would not feel so concerned.

The situation is, however, by

stealth GP surgeries are deciding to keep the phone/Zoom method of ‘treating’ patients with face to face kept for exceptional circumstances and only at the doctor’s discretion.

Key to this so called ‘triage process’ is the role of the reception staff. Responses in this paper from GPs have commented on how the patient should be kind to them. What

is also lacking is the recognition of the reception staff of the need to be polite to the patient.

For most of us, having a concern which we believe means we need to see our GP causes understandable anxiety. The telephone call will usually mean a 20/30 minute wait listening to dreadful music and a series of very poorly edited messages.

Often the call is cut off and you have to start again.

Covid has been a major trauma for us all and our need for caring empathetic GPs is greater than ever.

There is no effective substitute to seeing your doctor face to face.

GPs are very well rewarded for their job - it’s time they did the job they are paid to do.

Extra work on A&E is unfair Give us back our lake, council I take exception to the piece by Dr Rob Cauldwell defending the work of GPs during the pandemic.

He may view, due to the vaccine roll-out, they have been incredibly busy, but that has only been the last six months or so I have spoken to many people who work closely with GPs and, without

exception, they all feel they have been let down by the ‘missing GPs’.

The elderly will just leave it and probably get more sick, and the extra workload heaped on A&E from people who cannot get a GPs appointment is grossly unfair on them as they are already massively overstretched and over worked.

Why not put GPs in call centres?

As most GP surgeries are not offering patients face to face consultations without jumping through many hoops, preferring telephone consultations, why not close all surgeries and have doctors based in a call centre.

This would enable all the

empty surgeries to be used for something more useful.

Not beneficial to most of us who want face to face consultations, but then the consideration of what patients want isn’t a priority, is it?

GPs have basically run for the hills while hospital doctors and nurses have worked to breaking point.

So, no, Dr Cauldwell, both personally and professionally I do not see how you can claim your GPs have worked tirelessly throughout.

I too miss the lake at Coronation Park in Crosby.

After a life-threatening illness, I found it a place of peace and quiet ideal for my physical and mental wellbeing.

It’s a well used facility by families bringing their youngsters to feed the ducks. Parents/grandparents reminisce fondly of their own childhood feeding the ducks.

It also appears to be an important stopping off place for migratory bird travelling to and from places like Martin Mere, while at weekends, since

1947, the local model boat club would be there sailing.

The council say they don’t have the funding, yet their own policies talk about funding for protecting people’s health and well being.

They also have £4million specifically allocated to parks and open spaces.

Surely £30,000 from these budgets isn’t too big an ask.

So please give us back this longterm well-used and loved facility.

Little happens with new schemes Yet another development scheme has been announced for Crosby Village.

Over the past couple of decades, numerous schemes for the rejuvenation of the village have been proudly announced by developers, but each time, very

little has happened.

About 15 years ago, a large area of the village behind the Crown Buildings was demolished as part of future development plans, but even now, it is still an area of wasteland which has been untouched

by any developers since it was flattened!

I await the latest planned scheme with interest. But I won’t be holding my breath!

By Tom Martin A MUSICAL theatre student from south Sefton needs to raise just under £11,500 to continue his dream of becoming a star on the West End. Adam Cusack, who first started singing at the age four, has featured in the Champion on a number of occasions over the years due to his acting and singing achievements.

Now at the age of 15, he is studying at The Hammond School in Chester, which is a specialist Performing Arts school and follows a curriculum in all types of music, theatre and dance.

Adam needs a bursary to continue with his studies but The Hammond can only offer 50% of the funding, so his family need to raise the rest, which totals £11,475.

His mum, Tracey, told the Champion: “Adam has performed on stages throughout the North West since the tender age of four. We could see at an early age he was a gifted performer and would endeavour to pursue a career in the performing arts.

“In a football crazed society, a young boy who dreams of the stage is frowned upon but Adam has always been a young man who is true to himself and his dreams. His ultimate goal is the West End not Wembley but this sadly is seen as less important by many.

“We have previously done online raffles, wrote letters requesting sponsorship, Adam has done virtual performances to raise money and will be busking over the summer to raise as much money as he can.

“We are looking for either business or individuals

“We are also asking any business or celebrities if they can donate any raffle prizes as Covid restrictions permitted we are having a fund-raising live event later in the year.

“I believe that every child matter’s where education and training are concerned if the child has the vision and the ability, regardless of postcode or financial status and they should be given the same opportunity.”

Lil had a long life of volunteering and a fighting spirit that inspired others.

Forgive me for feeling fobbed off about the Ormskirk MotorFest

A LITTLE bit of Monaco in a Lancashire market town. That was the selling point of the very first Ormskirk MotorFest, way back in 2011 – and I’m pleased to say that in most aspects the event’s managed it.

I’m sure you’ll be shocked to learn that Ormskirk doesn’t come with the balmy Mediterranean climate of the sun-kissed principality (although to be fair, it’s only rained on one outing so far), and there’s a branch of Morrisons in lieu of the superrich lining the harbour with superyachts.

But the important thing is that it had a closed street circuit where you could watch old F1 cars strutting their stuff – and bubble cars, Ferrari Enzos, stock cars and historic motorcycles, for that matter.

So I was saddened to read in last week’s Champion that the MotorFest had been called off for the second year on the trot.

Entirely understandable due to the risk of spreading COVID-19 with cases currently still rising – so it’ll be back next year, right?

Well, then I got shown a copy of a letter from West Lancashire Borough Council, which has been helping to fund the event since its initial outing more than a decade ago, to Aintree Circuit Club, which organises all the displays and runs around Ormskirk’s one-way system.

In it, Heidi McDougall, the council’s corporate director of place and community, told the club: “It

is also with regret that I must advise that the council, due to ongoing pressures, made worse by the impact of COVID, on its financial position is not able to continue to support Motorfest financially or with staff resource, as it has done in previous years.

“If Aintree Circuit Club wish to hold a MotorFest in future years, I would encourage you to look to make it financially self-sustaining and to draw upon your own members and volunteers to adequately staff the event and ensure it is run safely.”

Draw from that what you will, but to me that sounds as though the council is no longer prepared to back the event responsible for Ormskirk’s single busiest trading day of the year, with 42,000 people

packing into the town centre for 2019’s event.

So, for my own research for a piece in Classic Car Weekly, I asked the council whether it intends for the event to continue without the council’s cash or manpower, on behalf of all the car nuts among you who’d love to see it continue.

What I got back, even though the council told me the MotorFest was ‘an outstanding event’ which it hopes will be back next year, was weirdly familiar.

It didn’t take me long to find out why – it was exactly the same statement it’d given to my colleagues at The Champion last week, word for word!
