Crosby mum awarded British Empire Medal

Squadron commander recognised in Honours list THE squadron commander of Maghull Air Cadets has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2021.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Taylor of 2348 (Maghull) Squadron, has served the unit for 32 years as an adult volunteer and has been awarded for his ‘outstanding and selfless’ contribution to the Air Cadet organisation.

He was also singled out for his ‘exceptional leadership’ of one of Merseyside Wing’s most prestigious squadrons, with a Commendation from the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Wigston.

Flight Lieutenant Taylor, 54, who lives in Maghull, is dedicated to the success of his Squadron as well as all the cadets that have passed through over the years.

He has committed his time to multiple evenings a week as well as weekends, to mentor and support young people. More than 40 Cadets from the unit at Moorhey Road in Maghull have become highly suc-

STAFF at a well known Lydiate pub have paid tribute to a colleague who was killed in a tragic road accident last Friday.

Josh Daly, 20, from Melling, died after his motorcycle hit a signpost at around 12.15pm on the approach to the Four Lane Ends roundabout from the direction of the A570 Ormskirk Road, near Ormskirk.

The young rider suffered serious injuries and was initially taken to Aintree Hospital, however, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

It said: “Many of you will have already heard the very sad news that yesterday, Josh Daly, a member of our staff family, tragically lost his

life after a motorcycle accident near Ormskirk.

“Anyone who ever met Josh will remember him for his infectious smile and his genuine enthusiasm for whatever the subject matter.

“He will be greatly missed by everyone at the Scotch Piper; staff and customers alike and will forever be in our hearts.

“Our thoughts now are with his family who have our deepest sympathy and who should know that we are here for them to help in any way we can.”

As a mark of respect to their colleague, the pub was closed to general trade on the Saturday following the accident, but opened from 2pm so that staff, friends, family and close customers could call in to support one another, remember a ‘wonderful young man’ and to sign a book of condolence.

Pop-up food outlet could return to Crosby Lakeside Report by Danielle Thompson SEFTON Council chiefs are looking to bring back a pop-up food and drink offer at Crosby Coastal Park later this summer following a well-received 28-day trial at the popular location.

Sefton-based owners of The Bus Yard took part in the trial, operating from a double decker bus near to the Marine Lake, overlooking the beach.

From fish finger butties to chocolate brownies and cocktails, the street food-style outlet has been incredibly popular with residents and visitors alike over the past four weeks.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Our Green Sefton Service is gearing up for a busy few months ahead and are proactively looking at ways to ensure our coast offers the best possible experience for all beach users.

“They ’ve worked really closely with the local business who took part in the trial, as well as understanding community concerns about any adverse effects such as littering that might result from an offer like this.

“I’m really pleased to report that we’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback during the popup which finished at the weekend, so much so that we are exploring options to bring the bus back later this summer.

“The team at The Bus Yard even took part in a beach clean-up following the busy late May Bank Holiday, showing their dedication and commitment to working alongside the Council and volunteers to keep Crosby looking clean and tidy.

“I would urge anyone with further thoughts to get in touch to tell us what they feel worked well or per-

Planning approval was recently received for another pop-up food and drink trial at Ainsdale beach.

Plans are still being finalised, but it is hoped that the shipping container units that will house the temporary offer will be in place by the middle of July, with a trial running there until the late autumn.

Feedback from both the Crosby and Ainsdale trials will be reviewed later this year, before considering how more permanent facilities might be arranged from 2022.

Young soprano reaches semi finals of Miss Junior Teen GB competition A TALENTED singer from Thornton has reached the semifinals of Miss Junior Teen Great Britain 2022.

T’mya Fyffe, 14, is a gifted soprano who was previously a contestant on The Voice Kids UK 2019 series.

She has also been nominated for a National Diversity Award 2021 and is a Young Patron for the Anna Kennedy online autism charity.

Her mum, Evelyn Ann, told the Cham-

pion: “T’mya is so excited! As part of the competition she will be raising money for the Together for Short Lives charity.

“She travels over the UK performing and supporting for lots of different charities and was invited to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as recognition for the charity work she does.”

The Miss Teen Great Britain grand final will be held in 2022 in Blackpool.

SEFTON Council is urging residents to lend their support to three projects which will put local people at the heart of efforts to create more “vibrant, resilient and connected communities.”

Residents can give financial backing to a borough-wide women’s volleyball scheme; a campaign to create a living and green alleyway space in Formby, and to the Made in Bootle project.

The funding opportunity is part of Sefton Crowd, an initiative that aims to give anyone who lives locally with ideas about how to improve their area the opportunity to gain funding via the UK’s leading civic crowdfunding platform Spacehive.

The aim, say the council, is simple – ‘to fund and deliver exciting and innovative ideas to improve Sefton put forward by the local community, for the local community’.

The council has allocated a dedicated matchfunding pot of £50,000 to help the projects achieve their goals.

Sefton Volleyball Club are looking for £1,598 to start a club specifically for women and children in the borough.

The 8 Alleyways Project are looking for £11,058 to rejuvenate and transform an alleyway in Chapel

Lane, Formby and The Made In Bootle Project is looking for £3,483 to create an online platform for residents of south Sefton to showcase artisan goods and wares.

So far, more than 746 residents, businesses and other organisations, have come together alongside the council to get behind 16 ideas, with over £91,000 raised across Sefton. From wildflower meadows to virtual music festivals, Sefton Crowd is helping people bring their ideas to life.

The Woodend Community Woodland Project is just one example.

Frank Sharp, Trustee of Friends of Maghull District said: “In the most challenging of times, the rich, accessible, friendly collaborative support from Spacehive and the incredibly generous motivational pledges from their partners Sefton Council, Idverde and others made the seemingly impossible possible.

“This enabled us to exceed our £23,803 funding target by 14%, to reinvigorate an historic woodland entrance to Maghull, with a welcoming, accessible, safe, iconic Cllr Trish Hardy and engaging wildlife

friendly space, focusing on enhancing the environment, history, community, and legacy.”

Sefton Crowd forms part of an innovative approach to civic planning by Sefton Council which sees crowdfunding as a key channel to involve communities and local organisations in regeneration.

Mum awarded British Empire Medal for services to charity Report by Danielle Thompson A MUM from Crosby was ‘stunned’ to be awarded the British Empire Medal for voluntary and charitable services.

The Champion has published several stories over the years about Julie Lawson and her charity work both at a local and national level.

She was inspired to raise funds after losing both of her parents, Jack and Joan Platt, only seven weeks apart to Alzheimer’s in 2014 and she has raised thousands for the Alzheimer's Society and other charities. She was included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list earlier this month.

The British Empire Medal is awarded for a ‘hands-on’ service to the local community. This could be a long-term charitable or voluntary activity, or innovative work of a relatively short duration (three-four years) that has made a significant difference.

A LIVERPOOL indie band filmed their latest music video on Crosby Beach!

Screentalk have released their new single ‘Mountain Soda.’ Shot in black and white, the video follows a darkly comedic story about two not-so star-crossed lovers on a date at the seaside spot.

“He messaged me with this daft idea and it’s pretty much exactly how it turned out.

“I was volunteered by him to get in the costume, an opportunity I took up without hesitation.”

Speaking about the shooting the video at a place close to their hearts and the filming experience, Screentalk drummer Dan Moore added: “Crosby is somewhere we’ve visited quite a bit growing up with our friends and family, next thing I know I’m watching a lad I’ve known since I was five years old taking a block of plastic out on a date... I didn’t mind getting a chance to whack a footy at them, though.”

In a tribute, his family said: “As a mother and father we couldn’t have wished for a better son or big brother to his sister Francesca. We are beyond proud of the young man he became, achieving more in his 20 years than most do in a lifetime.

“Josh’s life was full of fun, love and laughter. He dedicated his life to various groups and charities, always putting others first and always with a smile on his face.

“During the last 10 years Josh has been a member of Melling Scout Group where he loved nothing more than sitting around a camp fire with his friends. Aged 14, Josh travelled to Portsmouth to sail on a multi-million pound yacht with the Rona Sailing Project. Aged 17, Josh travelled to Nepal with Merseyside Scouts to rebuild a primary school destroyed in an earthquake.

“Josh was at his happiest walking for miles and miles and trekking up mountains and camping - taking in the beauty around him and being under the stars.

“Josh’s other loves were motorbikes, fast cars, John Lennon and The Beatles. Being an old man at heart, Josh enjoyed a good whiskey and a cigar and he loved Only Fools and Horses. He was always saying ‘mange tout, mange tout’.

Ray of sunshine “His other love was Liverpool Football Club. He would always be shouting at the TV when they played a match.

“His friends and family were the loves of his life. He loved riding his motorbike in the sunshine and with his biker family, which centred around his job at the Scotch Piper Inn, Lydiate.

Josh considered that to be his second home.

“Josh was a hard worker and, as well as the pub, he also worked in the Titanic Hotel, Liverpool, where he leaves behind many friends and colleagues.

“Josh was our ray of sunshine, forever young, forever loved and forever missed.

Funding to protect residents from flooding is refused, claims MP

FLOOD Minister Rebecca Pow MP has refused to commit funding to protect Maghull residents from flooding, MP Bill Esterson has claimed.

Mr Esterson met with the minister to discuss proposals from the Environment Agency to build flood defences at Dovers Brook, after hundreds of local residents were ‘minutes away’ from having to evacuate their homes earlier in the year as a result of flooding caused by Storm Christoph.

The Minister, who is responsible for flood defences in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) said in a follow up letter that

“Yet the Minister is still refusing to release funds that would protect my constituents, their homes and their families.

“I will continue to work with the Environment Agency to find a solution beyond the current temporary fix. I will continue to press the government to whatever is needed to protect my constituents.”

University of Liverpool professor awarded CBE for groundbreaking research Report by Danielle Thompson UNIVERSITY of Liverpool’s Professor Tom Solomon has been made a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his services to Neurological and Emerging Infections Research, including during the coronavirus response.

Professor Solomon, from Crosby, who joined Liverpool in 1998 from the University of Oxford, is director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections. The Unit has played a major role in the UK and international response to Ebola, Zika and most recently COVID19.

He has had several key roles during the coronavirus pandemic, including chairing government research funding committees, advising the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on vaccine safety, and leading research on neurological complications of COVID19.

Professor Solomon heads a large research group which studies emerging brain infections in the UK and globally, with programmes in Africa, Asia and Latin America. His clinical work in Liverpool is as an honorary consultant neurologist at the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool University Hospitals.

He is internationally renowned for his expertise in encephalitis, inflammation and swelling of the brain. In Asia he showed the mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis virus is a major brain infection and spearheaded a World Health Organisation campaign to reduce the disease through vaccination. He is an advisor to the UK Government and

Hundreds set to walk for Great-gran, 92, knits more than 400 charity during fun day ‘NHS comfort bears’ CROSBY Coastal Park will play host to a summer fundraiser by Clatterbridge Cancer Charity when hundreds of walkers will complete different challenges.

Lead The Way, to be held on July 18, will involve music, food and drinks but most importantly a three, five or 10 mile walking challenge so locals can raise money for charity.

There will also be a Pooch Parade with categories including Best in Show, Ultimate Cutie and Clatterbridge Mascot.

One of the walkers will be Bob Stone, who has taken part in the event for the last two years.

He said: “Two years ago Clatterbridge gave the most precious gift of all, the life of a beautiful, talented woman named Estelle, and my dearest friend. The care she received at Clatterbridge has made her a survivor, and I will do the Lead the Way Walk this year and every year that I can, because every penny raised helps, but no amount of money can repay the debt thousands of families and friends owe Clatterbridge for the lives of their loved ones.”

Clatterbridge event manager Mark Parkinson said: “We look forward to our walks each year as they are so well attended and make for a fantastic day out. For every supporter taking

Report by Danielle Thompson A KIND-HEARTED great-grandmother has knitted more than 400 ‘coronavirus comfort bears’ during the pandemic.

Mum of seven Dorothy Webster, 92, from Litherland, has been an avid knitter since she was four but really ramped up how many items she has created in the last 11 years.

She has knitted more than 3,000 bears during this time, as well as more than 3,000 vests! These were all made for the Chip Shop Babies appeal in Africa, before turning her talents to another cause close to her heart during the lockdown.

The term ‘chip shop babies’ began when it was discovered that often new born babies mostly in developing countries arrived into this world and had no clothes to put on. As a result the newborns were wrapped in newspaper, just like a fish supper, to keep them warm.

News of this reached knitters up and down the UK who developed a simple vest pattern, with additional hats sometimes, which even a novice knitter could cope with. As a result tens of thousands of vests have been knitted and sent by the charity Mission International out to needy babies around the world.

During the pandemic, it occurred to Dorothy that children being treated at Sefton’s hospitals might be scared of not being able to see doctors’ or nurses’ faces, so she turned her skills to creating more than 400 ‘comfort bears’ to donate to the NHS. These are hand-knitted little bears, wearing brightly-coloured knitted scrubs and knitted masks – even little NHS badges! The masks and clothes are sewn into place onto the bears, so they are safe for even very young children.

Dorothy ’s son Sid said: “My mum is one in a million. She’s so thoughtful and she’d do anything for anyone. We lost my dad four years ago and mum has macular degeneration and can’t walk very far

but still goes above and beyond for anyone.

“She has been making all sorts of treats for the team at Davey’s Chemist who are doing a fantastic job of giving more than 25,000 vaccinations! She has made scones, carrot cakes, lemon drizzle cakes and all sorts.

“She just loves to help people. She won’t accept a penny for the bears and has spent a fortune on wool.

She sees what she can find in charity shops for stuffing and loves to give the bears away, for free, to help children in hospital who are frightened.

“One of my family members, who works for Aintree Hospital, said that they also give them to elderly patients with dementia and they love them too, as well as the children.

“We are so proud of mum for everything that she does.”

Chiefs increase sweeping at grotspot COUNCIL chiefs are increasing sweet sweeping at a grotspot in Thornton - after Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson claimed that The Crescent was ‘too often strewn with litter’ and blighted with weeds.

Mr Esterson visited the site and met with Thornton parish councillors James O’Keefe and Bob McGill and residents told him about weeds growing in the gaps

in the pavements and in the planters, and an uneven footpath that caused prams and wheelchairs to tip.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Sefton Council are aware of the current litter issues at the location and we continue to encourage people to take litter home or use the bins provided.

Litter should not be dropped on our footpaths and people may be

liable for a fine if our enforcement officers see an incident occur.

“The Council are increasing street sweeping at the location to address the current situation in addition to the litter picking that takes place twice weekly.

“Additionally, the location has been identified for resurfacing and this work will be completed shortly which will improve the appearance of the footpath.”

College students volunteer to clean up their campus STUDENTS from Hugh Baird College have formed a volunteer group to help clean up the streets around their campus.

The group, comprised of learners from across the college’s courses, have created their own ‘Community Action Group’ to tackle the litter on the streets of Bootle with an aim to make a difference to the local community.

The students were supported during their first litter-picking sessions by Sefton Council’s Locality Services who provided bags and litter pickers as well as two Eco vehicles to assist with sweeping and clearing.

In total they filled more than 100 refuse bags of rubbish, ranging from takeaway bags to plastic bottles.

Rebecca Clegg, a hospitality and catering student at Hugh Baird College, said: “I enjoyed our first get-together to clean up the streets around our campus and I was astonished to see the amount of litter we collected after just a few hours.”

Cllr John Fairclough, Sefton Council’s cabinet member for Locality Services, said: “Often the youngsters in our neighbourhoods are blamed for making a mess and not caring about their environment. It was fantastic to see this group, and the College,

Survey could help to secure future of Maghull radio station

THE team behind Maghull Radio are calling on residents to complete a survey to help them gain finance with the aim of securing the future of the station.

In February £1,000 was raised through crowdfunding by friends of the station to buy this year’s broadcasting licence, but

long term finance is being sought and this survey is one source of income.

Maghull Radio is an internet-based service which broadcasts to listeners from its studio in Maghull Town Hall.

It aims to entertain and inform its listeners with a focus on music and talk about issues concerning Maghull and the surrounding area.

David Hughes from the station said: “Maghull Radio want at least 100 people to complete this survey. Anyone can fill it in, especially folk who have not heard of Maghull Radio or have no interest in the station.

Teachers and pupils hold fundraising day to help ex-pupil with brain tumour Report by Henry James TEACHERS and pupils at St Andrew’s CofE school in Maghull held a fundraising day for former head boy Owen Copland, who is seriously ill with an aggressive brain tumour.

The school, which is based at Deyes Lane, found out about Owen’s illness earlier in the year.

Owen, 20, was in his third year at John Moores University in Liverpool when he discovered the devastating news.

He has written on social media: “It was during lockdown in September when I had headaches and returned home after a two week isolation period to my family and was feeling quite poorly and lethargic.

“I was then transferred to the Walton Centre. After this I was given an MRI for more details into my condition and I was diagnosed with an aggressive type of brain tumour called a Glioma tumour.

“It was decided I needed semi-emergency surgery and a team of neruosurgeon consultants made a plan for my operation

brain tumour treatment research.”

Sefton marks air quality successes on Clean Air Day

Campaign focused on impact of air pollution Report by Danielle Thompson CHIEFS at Sefton Council backed Clean Air Day this year by urging people to take small steps to make a big difference to air pollution in Sefton.

Air pollution is damaging to the health of the population and can be particularly damaging to the health and development of children and young people. The national Clean Air Day campaign on June 17 focussed on the impact of air pollution on children and how adults can make small changes to protect them.

The past year has been encouraging for Sefton in terms of air pollution, with all air quality monitoring stations seeing a significant reduction in levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). This has been largely due to reduced traffic levels in our borough as a result of the pandemic. In some areas, this reduction in traffic has been as high as 50% and this has translated into large improvement in air quality.

The good results come as lockdown restrictions begin to ease and road traffic increases.

There are many alternatives to travelling alone in a car, particularly for short journeys.

Changing how we travel is just one way that people can help to maintain the recent decreases in air pollution.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, cabinet member for regulatory and corporate services said: “Clean Air Day is an important initiative to raise awareness of the

issue of air quality and prompt people to change their behaviour “The pandemic changed the way we live and work and, in many ways, this has been good for the air quality in Sefton, but we mustn’t go back to normal!

“We cannot just think about clean air on Clean Air Day, this is something that matters to everyone, all the time. Everyone can make a small change to make our borough cleaner and greener.”

Sefton Council is keen to maintain this progress in cleaning up our air and is using Clean Air Day to raise awareness of the small things people can do that will keep our air pollution levels falling.

(Champion Letters, June 9) I disagree with Doctor Jon Clarkson and I was furious when I read his letter. The vaccination programme is run nationwide, not just by him and should not have an impact on patient care.

If hospital staff, people administrating vaccinations and many more professions can come face-toface to help people, why not GPs? My Mum’s breathing deteriorated so my Dad phoned the surgery asking if my mum could see a GP. No joy. About a week later, my mum was so desperate, she phoned and told them she was having difficulty breathing and needed an appointment. This is where the care should kick in.

The receptionist, after hearing she couldn’t breathe properly, offered her a phone consultation... in SIX days time!

Think hard before being critical of doctors I work as an advanced nurse practitioner at a very busy town centre surgery.

In my experience patients, on the whole, have taken to the telephone triage calls very positively and triage calls are not a new phenomenon as many GP practices were already doing this pre-pandemic.

2020 and Lockdown Changed my Life When Robyn Riley joined the Aintree Hope Community Centre Slimming World group in January 2020 to lose weight for her wedding, she never would have guessed what challenges lay ahead.

THE St. Joseph’s Hospice Summer Garden Party will be back this August after 18 months without the team being able to hold any public fundraising events.

It will be a fun day for the whole family and will take place in the hospice’s beautiful woodland gardens in Thornton, near Crosby, from noon on Saturday, August 7.

The hospice’s fundraising team has struggled on throughout the pandemic with a variety of virtual events and online collections so they will be making every effort to make sure this year’s Garden Party is one to remember and raises much-needed funds for the hospice.

There will be fabulous market stalls, face painting and a kids corner, as well as the much-loved Teddy Bear Parade, a hospice tradition enjoyed by generations of local families. There will also be a range of food and drink stalls, including an ice cream van, a BBQ and even a gin bar! There will also be entertainment throughout the afternoon.

The event will be free to attend and you can just turn up on the day but the hospice is asking people to put the date in their diaries and make every effort to come along and support the charity, which gives compassionate end of life nursing care to local people and their families.

In the run up to the event, the hospice is looking for donations of unopened bottles (anything from wine to shampoo), bottles of prosecco, new unwanted gifts, new unopened toys and gift bags to help make the day a great success.

Ahead of his forthcoming national tour, multi-award winning comedian Hal Cruttenden returns to the Southport Comedy Festival with his Work In Progress show. Hal is a well known face on our TV screens with appearances on Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News for You, Guessable, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, Bake Off: Extra Slice. This will be Hal’s third visit to the Southport Comedy Festival. Both of his last shows sold out so get your tickets early.

Art competition launched to mark Black History Month PRIMARY school children across Sefton have been invited to enter an art competition with the winners’ work to be placed onto police cars.

The competition, created to help mark Black History Month, will be an opportunity for primary schools in Merseyside to showcase the creativity of their Key Stage 2 children with the submission of three pieces of art per school, which can be either from the whole of Key Stage 2, one class or one pupil.

Pupils are asked to design a poster celebrating Black History Month and ‘making a difference’ based on figures who have made a difference from the past, present or their own communities.

The winning artwork will be judged by senior officers in Merseyside Police, partners from the councils and International Slavery Museum, the winning school from each the five boroughs across Merseyside will be announced in the first half of the autumn term.

The winners will not only see their school’s artwork branded on police vehicles in their borough but also one class from each of the winning schools will receive a guided tour at the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. Depending on Covid-19, this will either be a physical or virtual visit.

Sgt Azizur Rahman, who is organising the art competition, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils and their schools to learn about Black History Month and to celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.

“Black History Month recognises the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage and enables people to learn more about the effects of racism as well as how to challenge negative stereotypes so we can make a positive and potentially life-changing impact within our communities.

NIGHT HOUSEKEEPING ASSISTANT (£9.53 per hour, minimum of 20 hours a week)

Hours are by agreement but Contracts of Employment will be based on a minimum of one 10 hour shift a week 9.45pm until 7.45am (nights to be confirmed). The NHKA’s will follow a cleaning schedule provided by the duty manager, assist in the kitchen with the preparation of vegetables etc. the main responsibility is to answer the alarm call system for which training will be provided. NHKA’s may be required to undertake varied duties such as assisting owners with personal care and domestic help. The pay is £9.53 per hour plus holiday pay of 12.07% for every hour worked.

Blundellsands Classic is currently registered as a Domiciliary Care small organisation; therefore this position would best suit someone with a Care background or related experience. NVQ Level 2 in Care would be advantageous, however, training will be provided.

A contributory pension scheme is available. A Criminal Records Bureau enhanced disclosure will be requested in the event of a successful application.
