INSIDE THIS WEEK: Parkhaven Trust call for donations to its Big Garden Fundraiser PARKHAVEN Trust in Maghull is calling for donations towards its Big Garden Fundraiser this summer.

All funds raised will go towards purchasing seeds, plants and planters as well as gardening equipment and furniture to help their clients and residents enjoy the outdoors.

Parkhaven Trust is a charity and a leader in dementia care services.

Kim Crowe, chief executive at Parkhaven Trust said: “It is well documented that getting fresh air and light can help to reduce stress levels and agitation; anything as little as 10 to 15 minutes outdoors can be highly beneficial, especially for someone living with dementia.

“We are keen to support our residents and clients to get outside as often as possible; the Big Garden Fundraiser will help us support people to do just that.

“We are also calling for any unwanted seeds plants and gardening equipment. Our local community are always very generous and we greatly appreciate all donations.”

WATER SHOCK AT DANCE ACADEMY AFTER RATS GNAWED HOLE IN WALL! Studio used by hundreds of children forced to cancel classes after floor flooded Report by Danielle Thompson A DANCE academy in Seaforth had to close for two weeks after filthy water flooded into its studio from a hole gnawed into the building by rats.

Connect Dance Academy has its studio at the Stella Precinct in Seaforth - and usually teach 236 children a week across 55 classes.

Acadamy owners Michael Skelly and Kelly Phillips were devastated to find on Monday, May 16 that rooms they use for classes were flooded - after dirty water had poured in through a hole in the wall of the building, which they believe was gnawed through by rats.

Kelly told the Champion: “We came in to find the flooring was absolutely covered in filthy water that had come in from outside.

“We were devastated and had to cancel the classes for that week - it’s not nice knowing you are disappointing hundreds of children. The community is at the heart of everything that we do and we are from

AROUND 40,000 residents in Sefton who are eligible for the government’s £150 ‘energy rebate’ payment will be getting letters from the council to help make sure they receive the money.

Payments are already being paid to the 75,000 eligible households that pay through direct debit.

However, there are around 40,000 households that don’t pay their council tax by direct debit and will need to register securely online to receive their payment.

Each letter from the council will show a unique code that the household can use to confirm their details.

The code can only be used once, and the household will need their council tax account reference to hand when they register.

People receiving the letters and wanting more information can find details of the Council Tax Energy Rebate Scheme, including Frequently Asked Questions and an easy-read guide, at www.sefton.gov.uk/council-tax.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s cabinet member for regulatory compliance and corporate

services said: “Having started the process of the 75,000 or so £150 payments for those people who pay by direct debit, we are now determined to get payments out directly to the remaining 40,000 eligible households who pay in other ways.

“I’m pleased to say that since sending the letters in just one day we have received details from over 4,370 households that will enable us to process their payment.

“I would urge anyone who receives one of our letters, containing a unique code for them to register online to do so straight away to help us speed up the process. There is advice and an easy-Read explanation on our website at www.sefton.gov.uk/counciltax.

“We appreciate there are those people who do not have internet access and we are helping them through our Contact Centre on 0345 140 0845 but the more people who use the easy online route, the quicker we can make that service for those who really need it.”

Cllr Lappin went on to say that some scams relating to the Energy Rebate scheme in other areas have been reported and to remind Sefton residents that the Council will never telephone residents or cold call at their doors asking for bank details. She said residents should beware of anyone who contacts them in these ways.

Football club chief wants to take three vehicles filled with vital medical kits and supplies for children Report by Danielle Thompson MARINE FC ’s president is aiming for a hat-trick - by raising enough money to buy three ambulances to donate to wartorn Ukraine.

Kind-hearted Dave Thompson has already twice taken donations to the country ’s border since war broke out, delivering much-needed medical kits and supplies for orphanages.

Now, he wants to raise £35,000 to pay for three used ambulances, which he will service and fuel then fill with desperatelyneeded medical supplies and drive them across.

He has launched a donations page on Go Fund Me and has already raised more than £7,000 towards his goal.

He said: “After our successful aid trip to the Ukrainian border earlier this month, we would now like do something that is desperately needed in Ukraine.

“I have returned from a second trip to the border delivering much-needed medical kits and kids supplies for local orphanages.

“I met a Ukrainian friend who we started these projects for and it became apparent that there’s a very desperate need for medical equipment and transport.

“My friend was telling me stories from friends, who were collecting the dead in their own cars and arranging the burials.”

Dave wants to raise enough funds to buy two or three used UK ambulances, fill them with medical supplies and drive them down into Ukraine in the next few weeks.

He said: “We believe we can buy an old ambulance, fuel it, service it, insure it and fill it with supplies and drive it to Ukraine for about £12,000 each.

Anglers catch hefty fines for fishing without a licence Report by Tom Martin THREE anglers who were fishing in Ince Blundell and Formby without a licence caught more than they bargained after they were handed combined fines of £1,167.

Joe Edgar, of Baker Street, Huyton; Louis Cannon, of Knowsley Lane, Liverpool; and Anthony Wood, of Harsefinch Road, St Helens, were each ordered to pay £389 after appearing at North Cheshire Magistrates Court on May 11.

In October last year, while on patrol at Carrside Fishery near Ince Blundell, Environment Agency Fisheries Officers discovered Edgar and Cannon fishing illegally. Both failed to produce a fishing licence when asked.

On the same day, another enforcement officer from the Environment Agency was on routine patrol in Formby when he spoke to Wood, who was also found to be fishing without a licence.

Following the verdict, Damien Linney, Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officer, said: “This case shows

how seriously the courts take these offences and we hope the penalty will act as a deterrent to any angler who is thinking of fishing without a licence “Fishing illegally can incur a fine of up to £2,500 and offenders can also have their fishing equipment seized.

“We inspect rod licences throughout the North West and work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to check on cases of illegal fishing and other associated fisheries crime.

“Money raised from fishing licence sales is used to protect and improve fish stocks and fisheries, benefiting anglers.

“Those cheating the system risk prosecution and a criminal conviction.”

Any angler aged 13 or over, fishing on a river, canal or still water needs a licence. A one-day licence costs from £6 and an annual licence costs from £30 (concessions available).

‘Rat poison’ fears in park Crosby Village post allayed - it’s bird feed! office set to close Report by Tom Martin CONCERNS that ‘rat poison’ was being left on the ground in a popular park in Waterloo were allayed after it was found to be bird feed!

A concerned resident uploaded an image to social media of what looked like small pellets near to a bin on Beach Lawn Park after they feared that it was rat poison, which could be dangerous to any wildlife or pets.

However, Sefton Council investigated the reports in Beach Lawn Park and found out that it was just harmless bird feed.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are aware of allegations of rat poison being present by a bin in Beach Lawn Park in Waterloo and want to reassure residents that these allegations are incorrect.

“What appears to be photographed is likely to be

Grants on offer to help run children’s events during summer months Report by Tom Martin SEFTON community groups and organisations have been invited to apply for a slice of a £100,000 fund to help run “safe, engaging activities for young people” over the school summer holiday period.

Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell has launched the Youth Diversion Fund to help groups organise their own activities for children over the half term break.

It is hoped that more events for youngsters could reduce antisocial behaviour in local communities.

A total of £100,000 is available from the fund and organisations can bid for a one-off cash boost of up to £5,000 to provide safe,

supervised summer activities for young people.

Commissioner Emily Spurrell said: “People across Merseyside have told me that ASB can be a blight on their communities during the summer months, particularly during the six week’s holidays when young people are not in school and there are long light nights with very little for them to do.

“Many young people who get involved with behaviour which becomes anti-social don’t have access to positive activities and opportunities to keep them safe and engaged. They feel have nowhere to go and nothing to do.

“Families who were already struggling and are now facing a huge rise in the cost of living, simply don’t have the money to pay for holidays or organised clubs during the six week’s school break.

Cafe provides ‘out of hours’ mental health support STAFF from a mental health ‘Crisis Cafe’ in Crosby say they are always there to help people if they need support following the recent Mental Health Awareness Week (May 9 until May 15).

The specialist out-of-hours service, located at Crosby Youth and Community Centre, on Coronation Road, is set-up to support anyone in a crisis, signpost them to support services, support recovery and offer a “welcoming space.”

It is open for appointments on Fridays from 5pm-11pm and a drop-in service is available

during the same times on Saturdays and Sundays.

A spokesperson said: “We support any adult aged 18 and over who is struggling with their mental health simply by offering an out of hours, welcoming space. We mostly operate a drop-in service and we also offer phone/email support for people who suffer with anxiety, and feel unable to attend in person. LETTERS to the Editor New port road will just displace traffic elsewhere so rail line is only solution through this junction somewhat challenging and sometimes hideous.

Should this new road be built through Rimrose Valley Country Park then it will re-locate increased traffic chaos and congestion towards the docks, with more disruption to non dock traffic, and then, in a few years we will be looking for yet another new road.

New roads now solve nothing!

They generate increasing environmental damage, and take more and more 'green spaces' away from us to our collective detriment.

Surely, we are now required too look at genuine ‘outside the box’ alternatives, and the railway suggestion is the only appropriate and common sense suggestion that has emerged to bring any genuine answer to this problem.

I wonder that no one has come up with this idea before!

Dog licenses could save a child’s life Is it worth the life of another child just to avoid the introduction of the old fashioned dog licences.

Something must be done other than just ban certain breeds.

I know this wouldn’t stop all dog attacks because any dog can turn savage.

But there must be something done.

I’m so angry with Persimmon for leaving debris in Moss Side lake I have just read the article in the Champion regarding the old Moss Side lake in Maghull.

I went to see it on May 12 for I used to go fishing there with my dad when I was a youngster when it was still a hospital.

I was absolutely saddened by the state it has been left in.

Persimmon Homes stated in the article that they have kept it free from debris during the construction of the estate and also have sent someone on April 29 to remove debris from the lake and is blaming residents for it.

From what I saw on May 12, the debris looked like it had been there for months, maybe a year or two.

It seemed to be mostly objects you would use in the construction of a housing estate.

If it is also to be used by local residents to enjoy, then it’s not possible with a locked gate and fencing.

There is also some scaffolding/metal tubes and ladders in the lake as well.

The water also looks like pea soup.

The pieces of wood and debris in the Moss Side lake.

When I used to go with my dad it was never this pea soup colour even in the height of summer.

Something needs to be done asap before all the fish and wildlife in the pond all dies.

I would contact Persimmon Homes myself or the local authorities but

think I would be wasting my time doing so.

Seeing this article in the newspaper just made me so angry at Persimmon Homes for their constant lies.

Football ‘fans’ ruin our city’s reputation

I read with interest the piece on the letter page ‘What has happened to all the Mallards?’ dated in the May 18 edition.

Whilst I agree there appears to be a decline in the amounts of mallards this year, the picture attached was not a mallard but a Muscovy Duck.

We have had Everton fans saying racist comments to the wives and children of Brentford players and forcing a Liverpool fan to take down a Liverpool FC poster from his front window and Liverpool fans booing Prince William and the national anthem and raiding a motorway service station.

I know it’s the minority of Liverpool and Everton so-called fans, but we all get the blame!

It’s not surprising that all around the country they have lost respect of the people of the city of Liverpool.

I wonder that more of your readers have not put forward this idea in what I see as being a better alternative to a new road to the port: that is a railway line.

I read with interest the views of others, most of whom are against this road ever being built.

I share that view.

The case occasionally made for such a road should not be ridiculed.

The result of no new road will be forever increasing traffic congestion and the frustration that goes with it.

But new roads never solve anything.

They simply relocate traffic congestion and chaos from one location to another.

Marina Sands U14’s do what Liverpool couldn’t do and win an ‘unprecedented’ quadruple!

MARINA Sands U14s have had an incredible season, doing an unprecedented ‘quadruple’ which even Liverpool failed to achieve!

In the Hightown JFL Saturday league they went unbeaten all season winning both the league and cup competition, scoring 46 goals.

In the Sunday Bootle JFL they again won both the league and the cup in a much closer competition.

Football mum Joanne Morris said: “The boys have worked really hard this season

adapting to changes of systems to include the wide range of skills they possess.

“Their hard work in training and during matches has made them a force to be reckoned with.

“This great feat would not have been possible without managers Lee Morris and Andy Jackson, who do this in their own free time, the great parents involved in the team or the sponsors who helped with providing kits and training equipment this season: Asda, Piri Piri Old Roan and Propend Heating.”

Five wicket haul for Wilson as Northern beat Formby CHRIS Laker top scored with 81 as Northern beat Formby by 29 runs on Saturday.

Liam Grey (40) and Jac Kennedy (54) provided a platform for the innings with an opening partnership of 74 before Laker ’s knock which included six sixes.

Andrew Clarke (32) and Greg Liebenberg (33) also contributed as Northern amassed a total of 261-5 declared off 52 overs.

Formby were 131-2 in reply at one stage with Ollie Sutton top scoring with 74.

by one wicket.

In a thrilling Division One match Bootle drew with Highfield.

Jhangir Liaqat claimed five wickets for 63 runs as Hightown were dimissed for 207 in 54.3 overs.

Both Bootle openers were out for dismissed without scoring but skipper Daniel Davies rescued the innings with 89 and Tom Meskell scored 30 to keep up the momentum. Danny Hart scored an unbeaten 27 while Joe Nagle was run out for 28 as Bootle had to settle for a draw finishing on 205-7 off 49 overs.

Queen Elizabeth II is such an institution that it’s easy to forget she wasn’t supposed to have become queen at all...

Born in 1926, Elizabeth was the daughter of King George V’s second son, and had little expectation of succeeding to the throne until her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936 to marry the divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. After the death of her father, King George VI, Elizabeth was called upon to assume the throne, beginning a momentous reign.

On February 6, 2022, celebrations began for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee—marking her 70 years of service to the British Commonwealth.

First ‘Walkabout’

During a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand, Queen Elizabeth rebelled again centuries of royal tradition when she took a casual stroll to greet crowds of people in person, rather than wave to them from a protected distance. A ‘walkabout is now regular practice for the British royals.

Held at Westminster Abbey, Elizabeth’s coronation ceremony was the first to be broadcast live on television. Some 27 million people watched the ceremony with more than 11 million more listening on the radio. In the midst of a decade marked by social and political changes, the Queen’s 10-day visit to the Federal Republic of Germany (or West Germany) that was the first official visit there by a British royal since 1913.

On 7th June, Elizabeth and Philip rode in the Gold State Coach from Buckingham Palace to St. Paul’s Cathedral to officially celebrate her 25th year on the throne. An estimated 500 million people watched on television as the procession returned down the Mall. Back at Buckingham Palace, The Queen made several balcony appearances. Street parties and village parties started up all over the country: in London alone 4,000 were reported to have been held.

On 9th April 9 2021, Prince Philip, Elizabeth’s husband of 73 years, died at the age of 99. For more than a halfcentury, Prince Philip supported his wife in her royal duties and took on a slate of obligations of his own.

Philip’s funeral was held on 17th April.

Photos of the queen sitting alone in St. George’s Chapel struck many as a symbol of her loneliness and grief.

Plant a Tree for the Jubilee!

ST Joseph’s Hospice in Thornton planted three new oak trees in its woodland garden as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.

The initiative, which is taking place across the country to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, invites people from across the United Kingdom to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.’

His Honour John Roberts, a Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside, joined hospice chief executive, Mike Parr, inpatient unit manager, Marian Banks, and ward sister, Debbie Fletcher, to plant the trees in front of the hospice’s St Francis House unit.

John Roberts said “I was delighted to visit St Joseph’s Hospice in order to thank Mike Parr, and the other members of staff, for supporting the Queen’s Green Canopy Project. I feel sure that the three trees that have been planted will add to the atmosphere of calm within the hospice’s beautiful grounds.”

GREEN-fingered youngsters from a local Scouts and Cubs group planted 20 trees in Blundellsands as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the UK to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’.

The Scouts and Cubs of the 14th Crosby and District Scout group were more than happy to take part, planting 20 trees in the gardens of St Nicholas` church on Bridge Road and a further 20 in members’ own gardens.

Mike Parr added: “We are proud to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy project and we are very grateful to His Honour John Roberts for joining us for this unique tree planting initiative during Her Majesty’s platinum jubilee year.

A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched to hold a huge street party and music festival in Crosby Village for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“Our woodland gardens, and the nature that lives within it, are such an important part of the care we provide here at the hospice. The peace, tranquillity and comfort they offer to patients and their families, helps them emotionally and spiritually. Our three new oak trees have a special gold plaque to mark their special significance and have been planted very prominently so that everyone who visits the hospice can enjoy watching them grow.”

The Mix Youth Café has partnered with Crosby Town Team and The Crosby Festival Team in order to raise £2,200 to hold the free event for the community in Saturday, June 4.

The plan is to begin at midday and end at 10.30pm, with a whole host of entertainment on offer during the day.

A spokesperson for Crosby Town Team said: “This is targeted at everyone children, families, teens, adults, seniors and especially those who do not live in a street who wouldn’t benefit from a traditional street party, such as those who live on main roads, flats, apartments or retirement homes.

“All the tables and chairs will be organised in a fun, party atmosphere in the pedestrianised area of Moor Lane, with bunting, balloons, hats, streamers and music. All our guests have to do is bring their own packed lunch!

Volunteers Week takes place 1st - 7th June every year. It’s a chance to recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities and for us to say a massive thank you.

Volunteers Week is supported and celebrated by small grassroots organisations as well as larger, household-name charities, who together run hundreds of activities across the UK. These activities showcase and celebrate volunteers and the vital contribution they make in our communities.

We are looking for volunteers

What we do will succeed with the support of more volunteers to allow us to be open in Crosby throughout the week to provide the opportunity for our veterans and their families, and the wider community to call in and see us.

The Royal British Legion will provide training, advice and support and we look forward to welcoming those who would like to support our armed services community.

Who we are and why we’re here: We’re a group of volunteers keen to be actively involved with the local community whilst offering advice, support and information to the Armed Forces community.

What we do: • Act as a local point of contact for veterans and their families.

• Provide a hub for fundraising activities during the annual Poppy Appeal.

• Maintain educational exhibitions for all to visit.

• Offer volunteering opportunities.

• Offer meeting spaces to be used by the local community or other voluntary organisations.

New ways of volunteering have emerged since the pandemic took hold. Whatever role you choose to play, you will be supporting others while enjoying a rewarding experience for yourself.

In honour of Royal Voluntary Service Patron, Her Majesty The Queen and the example she has set in her record-breaking 70 years of service, the charity has launched the Platinum Champions Awards for volunteers.

Together with the charity’s President, The awards will celebrate outstanding volunteers across the country who are making a difference every day.

It’s yours for £115million!

THE price of things, you might have noticed, has been going up recently.

This includes – and bear with me on this one – the going rate for ultra-rare classic racing cars. Hard-pressed working people, like Rishi Sunak, Sir Alan Sugar and that bloke who runs JD Wetherspoon are no longer able to afford the highest of high-end cars because the price just went up. To £115million, as the nowconfirmed world record price would have it.

The story goes that Mercedes-Benz wanted to sell off one of its prized 300SLR ‘Ulenhaut’ Coupés – only two exist, and until very recently, it owned both of them. If you’re a petrolhead it might look familiar because it bears a passing resemblance to the merely very expensive 300SL ‘Gullwing’, but these prototypes have bespoke bodywork and the straight-eight engine based on that of the W196R Grand Prix car. It also had a fairly high-profile career, showing off the carmaker’s heritage around the world, and Mercedes was insistent that anyone who bought it would not be allowed to simply squirrel it away in a heated garage somewhere, never to be seen again.

So it asked various members of the one per cent to bring their private jets to Stuttgart, treated them to a slap-up lunch at its museum

and then asked RM Sotheby’s to auction it.

The final price was €135 million, making it the most valuable cars ever sold at auction, one of the top 10 most expensive things sold at auction, and the first time I can remember that a Ferrari 250 GTO hasn’t held that honour.

For the same money, you could buy 9,737 Kia Picantos, 50 Bugatti Chirons, or an entire Jack Grealish. With enough change spare for a stately home.

It’s nearly three times the previous record for a car price, and you might be wondering why anyone would want to pay this extraordinary amount for something that’s still only limited to 60mph on the Formby Bypass. Well, the SLR’s final price is still only a fraction of what someone paid for Leonardi da Vinci’s Salvator Mundiin 2017, and that’s just a slab of canvas

with some paint slapped on it. At least that’s a thing, in any meaningful sense of the word – some muppet paid a shade under 92million dollars for a non-fungible token of The Merge, which isn’t an artwork but an online record saying that you own it. Mercedes, but if it’s any consolation the suits in Stuttgart will be using the money to provide new educational scholarships for people studying environmental science, so the money isn’t just going to fund a yacht somewhere.

So there you have it, the world’s most expensive car just got a lot more expensive.
