VICTIM OF FREAK STORM ACCIDENT WAS A ‘DEVOTED HUSBAND AND DAD’ Tributes paid to man who was killed when debris hit van he was travelling in Report by Henry James TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular “loving husband and devoted dad” who died after the van he was travelling in was struck by debris at Switch Island junction during the storms which have hit the area. Stephen Matthews from Aintree, was a passenger in the van when debris struck the windscreen of the vehicle during storm Eunice shortly after 2pm on Friday, February 18. Emergency services attended the incident but sadly the 68 year old was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the vehicle was not injured. Mr Matthews’ family described him as a “popular and well known member of the Aintree community”
and a “beloved husband and devoted dad.” A family member has now launched a fundraising campaign to pay for the funeral costs. Mr Matthews’ family have issued the following tribute: “Stephen was a popular and well-known member of the Aintree community who was tragically taken from us too soon. “The beloved husband of Sylvia and devoted dad to Jonathan and Robert, he will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.” The family have asked for privacy as they grieve for their loss. Mr Matthews’ niece, Joanne McKie, has set up a GoFundMe page to help his wife Sylvia with the funeral costs. It has already raised more than £3,000 of its £5,000 goal. Joanne wrote on the page: “After the tragic loss of my Uncle Steve who was killed in a freak accident during the storm Eunice, I wanted to set up this page to help his beloved wife Sylvia with the funeral costs to support her at this difficult time. “Steve was a wonderful husband, dad, grandad, loving uncle and a popular member of the Aintree community and will be greatly missed by all.

“The family and everyone who knew Steve have been left stunned at the catastrophic circumstances in which he was taken. “Any funds raised will go towards giving Steve the send-off he deserves. “Sylvia, Jonathan and Robert appreciate the kind words of condolences sent at this traumatic time.” To find the page search Joanne McKie at www.gofundme.com Police are appealing for witnesses following the tragic incident. Sergeant Amy Murray said: “This is a tragic incident and our sympathies go out to the family and friends of the passenger and anyone else affected. “I would ask anyone who was in the area of Switch Island/Dunningsbridge Road, heading towards Aintree, from Maghull, at around 2pm who saw anything or captured anything significant on their dashcam to contact us as they may have information which is vital to our enquiries.” Call Merseyside Police’s Matrix Roads Policing Unit on 0151 777 5747, email SCIU@merseyside.police. uk, or DM @MerPolCC on Twitter quoting log 566 of February 18.
