THE ONLY BLUE IN A SEA OF RED! Moore is lone Tory MP in Sefton - and the whole of Merseyside! following his victory in ‘bitter’ Southport election campaign
IT was billed as a three-way fight for the right to be elected the town’s next representative in parliament - but in the end it was Conservative Damien Moore who landed all the knock-out punches to crush his two rivals and so return as Southport MP. Mr Moore retained the constituency brushing aside what turned out to be a feeble Lib Dem challenge and although his Labour opponent, Liz Savage, proved a more awkward combatant, she too failed to get the votes required to unseat the Tory. Now Mr Moore is the only Tory blue amid a sea of red Labour MPs in the whole of the Merseyside region. Worryingly for his political rivals, possible boundary changes could strengthen the Tories position still further come the next General Election with the Northern Parishes of West Lancashire - traditionally more
by Danielle Thompson Conservative - cementing the Conservatives current stranglehold in Southport. Time will tell as will the performance of the Tories and Boris Johnson over the next five years as they look to make good their promises of more money for the northern heartlands that helped the party to a landslide election victory last Thursday. Mr Moore first won the seat in 2017, which was previously held by long-standing Lib Dem MP John Pugh, who held the seat from 2001-

2017. At the vote on Thursday, Mr Moore retained the Southport seat with 22,914 votes (47.6%); Labour candidate Liz Savage received 18,767 votes (39%) and Lib Dem John Wright 6,499 votes (13.5%). This was an 8.9% increase on the 2017 general election when Mr Moore had a majority of 2,914 votes. Labour gained 6.4% from the last general election, while the Lib Dems
lost 12.9%. There are 70,837 registered voters in Southport and 68% turned out to vote - down 1.1% on the previous election. Damien Moore is the only Conservative MP in the whole of Merseyside. In the Sefton Borough area, Labour MPs retained Sefton Central (Bill Esterson), and Bootle (Peter Dowd). Mr Moore thanked his campaign team and the people of Southport. He said: “I will be proud to serve in the Conservative majority government. I am both honoured and humbled. Continued inside
