FEARS FOR SURVIVAL OF SHOPPING CENTRE
D-Day for election hopefuls
Central 12 ‘could end up as an industrial estate if measures aren’t taken to protect it from new, out-of-town developments’ Report by Danielle Thompson
Central 12
THE owners of Central 12 retail park have expressed ‘very serious concerns’ about the centre’s survival once a controversial out-of-town Sainsbury’s opens. The Champion has seen correspondence between Central 12 and Dukes Ward Councillor John Pugh, in which the centre’s owners say they are concerned for its future and, in particular, stress the need for free parking to be introduced. Cllr Pugh fears Central 12 could end up as an ‘industrial estate’ if measures, such as free parking for shoppers, aren’t implemented to secure its viability In August, the Champion revealed that Sefton Council chiefs had given the go-ahead to Sainsbury's proposals for out-of-town supermarket and petrol station development at the former Homebase site at the Meols Cop Retail Park.

Sainsbury’s were obliged by the planning permission consent to keep their Lord Street store open for five years after the opening of the Kew store. But now Councillor Pugh has revealed that the plans are to go back to Sefton Council’s Planning Committee in January despite being approved - due to ‘traffic issues that members need to be alerted to’. He believes the application should be turned down this time and that instead, Central 12 should be given free parking to attract more shoppers to the town centre, rather than the ‘out of town’ retail park.
