FLOOD ‘RATES RELIEF’ PLEA Report by Danielle Thompson
SOUTHPORT DJ Adele Roberts has jetted into Brisbane Airport to take part in this year’s ‘I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!’ The Radio 1 early breakfast show host was spotted landing in Australia just days before the show begins on Sunday. The former Merchant Taylors pupil, 40, achieved celebrity status after appearing on the 2002 series of Channel 4’s Big Brother, and went on to forge a successful small screen TV show and radio career. Adele is said to have told ITV producers of the show that she is ‘petrified’ of spiders, but ‘can’t think of any misconceptions that she wants to dispel in the Jungle’. She said: “My role in the camp will be as a cleaner and I’ll set up a pretend radio studio in the camp to inject some fun. I will most miss my girlfriend, family and music - a day doesn’t go by when I am not listening to it.” She will also miss her dad’s birthday!” As well as Adele, other confirmed celebrities include former footballer turned soccer pundit Ian Wright, Kardashians star Caitlyn Jenner, stand-up comedian Andrew Maxwell, ex-Eastenders actress Jacqueline Jossa and former rugby union player James Haskell.

ACTION has been called for to help residents in the town who are suffering flooded roads and streets due to the persistent rainfall of recent weeks. Dukes Ward Councillor John Pugh says he will table a motion at Sefton Council to coordinate a ‘rates refund’ scheme for residents whose streets are ‘turned into rivers’ by heavy rainfall. He says billing residents who suffer flooded roads is ‘literally highway robbery’. The motion is for council chiefs to recognise the serious problems of flooding across Sefton exacerbated by the effects of climate change; note that there is a significant problem in some areas with surface water severely overwhelming old and inadequate

drainage systems and the reluctance of the water utility companies and suppliers to prioritise perennial trouble spots despite residents paying for surface drainage; agrees to support and promote residents' applications for significant water rates reductions where there is clear evidence of persistent failure in the surface drainage system and to inform the utility companies accordingly and that the council acts as subcontractor for United Utilities jetting and clearing gulleys, etc. Cllr Pugh said: “With the UK facing another record year for rainfall and the local drainage system completely overwhelmed in places, this is a long standing problem that with climate change is only going to get worse.
