FEARS FOR FUTURE OF RESORT PUBS
YET another well known resort pub has been put up for sale - adding to a growing list of local hostelries that are now on the market. The Fox and Goose pub in Cable Street - much loved as a live music venue in the town - is looking for a buyer but although it closed temporarily last week, it is set to reopen this weekend while a search for a new owner gets underway. The pub is on the market for £195,000 and the hope is a buyer will be found to help secure its future. The Fox and Goose joins several other town centre pubs all for sale including The Coronation on King Street and the Old Ship on Eastbank Street. Fears over the future of Southport’s pubs comes as national figures were released by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) showing that on average 18 pubs a week across the country are being forced to call last orders. In the last year alone, almost 1,300 were closed down or converted into housing and offices. Now Camra is calling for urgent action to cut the tax burden placed on pubs as they are being hit by a triple whammy of high rates of beer duty, rapidly rising business rates and VAT. YOUNGSTERS from the Class of 2018 have ‘graduated’ from Marshside Pre-School. Staff at the school based at the Methodist Church on Marshside Road celebrated youngsters finishing their time at the school by holding a mini-graduation for them which included miniature mortar boards, which the children took great delight in throwing into the air!
