AN ambitious plan for a tidal lagoon off the coast of Southport looks to have been sunk without trace. The news that a £1.3billion scheme in Swansea is set to be rejected by ministers, has disappointed campaigners locally who wanted to harness the Sefton coast to create a stateof-the-art renewable energy source. The Swansea Bay project is expected to be turned down largely due to concerns over high costs to consumers. It was hoped that a similar scheme would be looked at favourably for Southport should the Swansea tidal lagoon be given the go-ahead. It is expected that ministers are preparing to reject the proposal, despite strong support from the Welsh government,

which has offered to invest in its future. Tidal Lagoon campaigners in Southport include Dukes Ward Councillor John Pugh who now fears that if Swansea's ‘trailblazer ’ project is not given the green light, plans for other lagoons around the country,

including Southport, will be lost. In January 2017, an Independent Review of Tidal Lagoons, was published, which was backed by a number of MPs, including John Pugh, who was then the town’s MP. The report made more than

30 recommendations for delivering a tidal lagoon auditory bringing maximum benefit to the UK, with suggested sites proposed for all around the country. The report concluded that the benefits to the UK ‘could be huge’.
