Fears are raised for the safety of swans at Botanic Gardens CONCERNS have been flagged up for the safety of swans at the Botanic Gardens. The Champion was contacted by a number of worried readers who noticed that the Mute swan nesting in the water under the bridge at the Churchtown park had been spotted with blood on its back last week and that a lot of visitors to the area had been ‘going far too close’ to look at its nest. As well as this, one of the eggs appears to have been stolen, dropping down to just five eggs from the previous of six. The concern follows an incident in which a nesting swan at the park was shot by yobs last year.

THE DEVASTATED mother of a man who was mown down and killed by a drink-drive motorist who had also taken drugs, is calling for a lifetime ban for those who cause death by dangerous driving. Nicholas Farrimond, who worked as a Champion Newspapers delivery driver for more than 15 years alongside his father Peter, died at the scene after being hit by a Peugeot in Whitestake in August 2016. The driver, Leo McCarthy, 32, from Leyland, who was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol, was given a 10 year driving ban. But Nicholas’ family believe this means he will be able to drive again and could cause another family the same devastation. Thirty-five-year-old Nicholas was found during a search near the car, which was on its side in a

nearby field. His mum, Lynne Farrimond, has launched a campaign on the government's online petition site, calling for a mandatory lifetime ban for causing death by dangerous driving – and so far it has been signed by more that 1,700 people already. When it reaches 10,000 signatures, the government is obliged to look at the petition and at 100,000 it could be considered in Parliament. She said: “On the night that he died, it was the August Bank Holiday and Nick had been round at a friend’s house for a few drinks. He never took drugs and would never have driven home after a drink.
