The ‘oldest man in Britain’ celebrates his 109th birthday! IT was quite a day for Southport resident, John Tinniswood - thought to be the ‘oldest man in Britain’ when he celebrated his 109th birthday. Not only did family and friends of John celebrate the big day with him at The Hollies Rest Home on Mornington Road, there were also visits from TV news crews eager to report the milestone event. John appeared on Granada N ews and then the ITV main news, and also Channel 5 News. Sky News also came to interview him. Staff at The Hollies told the Champion it was a ‘fabulous day and even the sun came out for John’. Continued on page 3
TOWN CENTRE YOBS TARGETED IN NEW POLICE CRACKDOWN
Dispersal zone activated following ‘multiple reports of youths fighting, taking drugs, and terrorising residents, visitors and shop owners in resort’ POLICE were forced to use a dispersal order in Southport town centre following reports that up to 40 youths had been fighting, taking drugs and verbally abusing people in recent weeks. Merseyside Police say they received ‘multiple reports’ over the past fortnight from concerned members of the public about large gangs of yobs who have been causing trouble in the resort by terrorising residents, visitors and shop owners. In response, police activated a dispersal zone from Friday, August 27 to Sunday, August 29, which covered a large area including Marine Drive, the Promenade, Lord Street, Coronation Walk, Eastbank Street, Southport train station, Hall Street and Fairway. Patrols were also stepped up with more officers to

Community Inspector Graham Fisher said: “The incidents we have seen in Southport in the last two weeks simply will not be tolerated, and the introduction of the Dispersal Zone gave our officers extra powers to prevent further incidents from happening.
