ON-THE-SPOT FINES NOW IN FORCE ACROSS THE BOROUGH Report by Tom Martin
Fox & Goose supervisor Beth Humphries
Pub ‘flourishing’ after fears it would be turned into flats A POPULAR pub which was nearly lost forever when plans were revealed in 2019 to turn it into flats, is now flourishing a year after reopening. The Fox & Goose, on Cable Street, Southport, was at the centre of a planning application three years ago when a developer wanted to turn the empty building into accommoda-
tion. The proposal failed to materialise and it was eventually taken over by local businessman Hasan Akdeniz and a large refurbishment was carried out last year. It has now been 12 months since it reopened and staff say they are delighted with the response from locals.

TOUGHER rules are now in place across the borough’s coastlines and town centres, which could result in £75 onthe-spot fines for anti-social behaviour. The new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) means those who flout the rules will now pay the penalty for littering, polluting, causing fires, not picking up dog mess, carrying out balloon/lantern releases or general anti-social behaviour. The PSPO will be in place for three years, until summer 2025. The council say it was created following feedback from local communities, visitors and partner agencies. Tracie Trubshaw, Chief Inspector at Merseyside Police said: “Introducing the Public Space Protection Order will help visitors and residents enjoy our coastline
Flout new rules, say police and Council, and you’ll pay the penalty!
safely, throughout the summer and beyond, by making clear what behaviour is and isn’t acceptable. “If you have any concerns, please speak to our officers out on patrol, or call 101 so that we can take action and keep our communities safe.”
On-the-spot fines are now in place in coastal areas and town centres
Cllr Paulette Lappin, Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services, added: “The vast majority of visitors and residents treat our wonderful coastline with respect and our residents with consideration, and the introduction of this Order, will have very little or no impact on them. “However, it will help to make clear what is and what isn’t acceptable and will give our teams, along with those of our partners, greater powers to deal with that very small minority who behave inappropriately and cause distress and disturbance to local residents and businesses, or damage to our precious natural coast and infrastructure.”
